"Israel is a really high level and professionalism of doctors
Hello! Thank you for organizing my mom’s treatment. The host, organizers, are professionals and have done everything possible for quick surgery and meeting with doctors. Denis and his team seem to be working around the clock. Great fellows! Doctors are awesome! Attentive and very caring. And most importantly, knowledgeable. The operation went well and we are very pleased with everything. The room was comfortable. All that is needed. The only thing is Ichilov Center - a state hospital, the attendants did not always provide the services expected from them. But our host always did everything possible to quickly eliminate certain situations. They patronized us constantly. Israel is a really high level and professionalism of doctors. We were very pleased.

FAQ about Total hip replacement (arthroplasty) revision in Israel

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Why might I need a revision hip replacement in Israel?

Revision hip replacement in Israel is necessary when a previous implant fails due to aseptic loosening, infection, or mechanical wear. Surgeons utilize advanced robotic navigation and biological reconstruction to address complex bone loss, instability, or periprosthetic fractures within JCI-accredited facilities like Sourasky Medical Center.

  • Mechanical failure: Correcting aseptic loosening where prosthetic components detach from the bone.
  • Infection management: Treating deep implant infections via surgical cleaning or full component replacement.
  • Component wear: Replacing deteriorated plastic or ceramic liners that cause painful debris.
  • Biomechanical correction: Resolving recurrent dislocations caused by malalignment or ligament instability.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli orthopedic excellence is often driven by surgeons with diverse international training. For instance, Dr. Alon Friedlander at Sheba Medical Center holds fellowships from the USA, France, and Hong Kong. This global expertise allows local clinics to offer both drug-based recovery protocols and specialized biological reconstructions using stem cells, tailored to younger patients with active lifestyles.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of distinguishing between a full revision and a simpler liner swap. Many advise seeking a second opinion if initial symptoms like clicking or groin pain are dismissed, as precise imaging often reveals correctable mechanical conflicts.

Who are the leading specialists for revision hip surgery in Israel?

Leading Israel-based specialists for revision hip surgery include Dr. Aaron Menahem and Dr. Alon Friedlander. These experts treat complex prosthesis failures using robotic-assisted MAKOplasty and minimally invasive ALMIS techniques. Top-tier JCI-accredited facilities like Sourasky Medical Center and Sheba Medical Center coordinate these high-complexity orthopedic interventions.

  • Dr. Aaron Menahem: Expert surgeon at Sourasky Medical Center with 39 years in complex joint revision.
  • Dr. Alon Friedlander: US-trained specialist at Sheba Medical Center focusing on adult reconstructive surgery.
  • Hospital rankings: Sourasky Medical Center consistently ranks among Newsweek World's Best Hospitals for 2020-2023.
  • Specialized technology: Surgeons utilize 3D imaging and robotic technology for precise implant placement and alignment.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli orthopedic leadership is driven by surgeon volume and international academic integration. Dr. Alon Friedlander, for example, maintains a unique clinical perspective as a consultant for elite sports teams and the military. This high-stakes experience translates to exceptional technical precision during complex revision procedures where bone stock is often limited.

Patient Consensus: Experienced patients emphasize that revision surgery is a distinct subspecialty from primary replacement. They recommend choosing high-volume surgeons and verifying the specific number of successful revisions performed annually.

How does a `two-stage` revision work for infected hips?

Two-stage hip revision is the gold standard for treating chronic joint infections. Surgeons remove the infected implant and place an antibiotic-loaded spacer to eradicate bacteria. After weeks of targeted antibiotic therapy and clear lab results, a permanent new prosthesis is implanted during a second surgery.

  • Stage one: Surgeons remove the infected implant and all surrounding dead tissue.
  • Antibiotic spacer: A cement spacer delivers local antibiotics while maintaining joint space.
  • Interim period: Patients receive intravenous antibiotics for 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Stage two: Final reimplantation occurs once inflammatory markers like CRP and ESR normalize.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli centers like Sourasky Medical Center leverage high-volume expertise with 34,000 annual operations. We see a trend where surgeons use articulating spacers to preserve some mobility. This prevents the severe muscle stiffness often seen with static spacers. Always ask if your surgeon plans to use a mobile or fixed spacer.

Patient Consensus: Patients often find the spacer phase challenging due to restricted weight-bearing and temporary discomfort. Success brings significant relief once the final implant restores stable, pain-free walking ability.

What is the success rate for revision hip replacements?

Revision hip replacement success rates range from 80% to 90% for pain relief and functional improvement. Success depends on the reason for revision, with 10-year implant survival reaching approximately 83.2%. Procedures performed by experienced surgeons in high-volume Israeli centers often yield more predictable outcomes.

  • Success rate: Between 80% and 90% of patients report significant pain and mobility improvement.
  • Implant survival: Modern implants show 83.2% survival at 10 years and 93.6% at 20 years.
  • Re-revision risk: Patients face a 21-22% chance of needing another procedure within 15 years.
  • Clinic quality: Top facilities like Sourasky Medical Center maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation standards.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli orthopedic departments often specialize in complex reconstructive cases where bone loss is significant. High-volume surgeons like Dr. Alon Friedlander at Sheba Medical Center bring global fellowship experience to these cases. This specialized expertise is vital because revisions for mechanical loosening typically see better outcomes than those for infections.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that success means returning to daily activities without pain rather than perfect performance. Many advise discussing dual mobility implants with surgeons to specifically target and reduce chronic dislocation risks.

Can robotic technology be used for a revision hip replacement in Israel?

Robotic technology is actively used for revision hip replacement in Israel to improve precision in complex reconstructive cases. Leading centers like Sheba Medical Center use systems like Mako for 3D preoperative planning. This ensures accurate implant positioning and helps restore joint symmetry during difficult bone reconstructions.

  • Precision planning: CT-based 3D modeling maps distorted anatomy before any incisions are made.
  • Implant alignment: Robotic navigation ensures the prosthetic cup and stem align with sub-millimeter accuracy.
  • Surgical experts: Surgeons like Dr. Alon Friedlander at Sheba Medical Center specialize in reconstructive surgery.
  • High-volume centers: Sourasky Medical Center performs 34,000 operations annually, maintaining high technical proficiency levels.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While robotic assistance is a powerful tool for CT-based planning, the most successful outcomes in Israel are driven by high-volume revision specialists. Data shows that clinics like Sourasky Medical Center, which handles 1,800,000 patients annually, provide the necessary infrastructure to manage the unique mechanical complexities of a revision procedure effectively.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that robotic assistance is a tool for accuracy rather than an autonomous surgeon. Success depends on a specialist who can expertly manage stem replacement and leg-length restoration during the procedure.

What is the typical hospital stay for a hip revision in Israel?

A typical hospital stay for hip revision in Israel is 1 to 3 nights for standard cases. Complex revisions involving infections or bone grafts may require longer stays. Patients should plan to remain in Israel for 14 to 30 days for monitoring and initial rehabilitation.

  • Routine stay: Standard revision procedures typically require 1 to 3 nights in the hospital.
  • Complex cases: Procedures involving hardware removal or bone work often extend the inpatient stay.
  • Rehabilitation start: Supervised walking assistance and physical therapy usually begin within 24 hours of surgery.
  • In-country duration: International patients should stay in Israel for 2 to 4 weeks total.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli medical centers like Sourasky (Ichilov) handle massive patient volumes, performing 34,000 operations annually. This high frequency allows surgeons to streamline post-operative protocols. While US stays for revisions often exceed 4 days, Israeli JCI-accredited clinics focus on early mobilization to exit the hospital within 72 hours.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that recovery from revision surgery feels slower and more painful than the first replacement. Most emphasize the importance of arranging professional support for the first few days after hospital discharge.
