Drs seemed very good. The consultation was calm and professional but I was told I would have results within 2 working days. When I didn’t receive any information I returned to the hospital and was told I would be emailed within 24 hours. When that didn’t happen I had to come in again and was hugely surprised by a very rude and impatient receptionist who was dismissive and seemed to want to blame me somehow. She made some very unprofessional comments about me to colleagues in front of other patients when she thought I couldn’t hear. Other staff did their best to help afterwards but considering the money spent and my experience I would not recommend this place at all.

I went to the Galeazzi clinic. Milan. Italy. on my son's problem - gmgantism. Coordinators from Bookimed got involved. Had an online consultation. for which I paid 360 euros. All required documentation has been sent. references. analyses. x-rays. To determine the volume of the operation and the cost, they said that the patient needs to come to Milan. I'm from Ukraine. It's hard to describe how the journey cost me. with what difficulty. Upon arrival in Milan. we are consulted by another doctor and gives quite the opposite answer.!! Is it really impossible to agree and view all the documentation. y t. h and the video was sent!!! with immediately give a negative answer during an online consultation. why do it at all then? It's just a waste of money. not problem solving. Be careful!

"A trip to the clinic was done by Yana
Hello, I have serious scoliosis and some other health problems, it is necessary to operate scoliosis and preferably as soon as possible since it will only get worse ... In Ukraine, everyone refused to operate because there was a very big risk, Poland also refused ... Then I My coordinator Pavel Popkov wrote to Bookimed just a great person, he answers any questions even to stupid ones, he sent my documents to different clinics and finally the Galeazzi clinic was told to come for a detailed consultation ... The consultation was successful, everything seems to be going positive, waiting for a final decision from them! A trip to the clinic was done by Yana. She got us free tickets for a special program.

FAQ about Orthopedics in Italy

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How safe is orthopedic surgery in Italy for international patients?

Orthopedic surgery in Italy is highly safe for international patients due to strict European Union health regulations and specialized research centers. Facilities like IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant’Ambrogio perform 75% of Italy's revision surgeries. Surgeons often hold international memberships in organizations like Eurospine or the Scoliosis Research Society.

  • Expert volume: Dr. Roberto Danchise has completed 16,000+ arthroscopic procedures.
  • Specialized units: Dr. Roberto Bassani has performed 2,500+ major spinal operations.
  • Clinical research: IRCCS accreditation signifies centers combining advanced medical assistance with scientific research.
  • High success: Dr. Stefano Boriani developed international surgical staging systems for spinal tumors.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that Milan is the primary hub for complex orthopedic cases. IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant’Ambrogio handle over 340,000 patients annually. Choosing these high-volume centers is a smart move. They often manage the most difficult revision cases that other European clinics might decline.

Patient Consensus: Patients are often impressed by the warm welcome and professional coordination in private Milanese clinics. While some note that public hospital administrative staff may have language barriers, they highly value the technical skill of the surgeons and the quality of the post-operative testing.

What qualifications do Italian orthopedic surgeons hold and where were they trained?

Italian orthopedic surgeons complete 11 years of formal education and clinical training. This includes a 6-year medical degree and a 5-year residency in Orthopedics and Traumatology. Most train at university hospitals in Milan, Rome, or Bologna, with many completing international fellowships in the USA or Europe.

  • Medical degree: A 6-year Degree in Medicine and Surgery from an accredited university.
  • Specialization: A competitive 5-year residency program in Orthopedics and Traumatology.
  • Clinical training: Residency includes mandatory rotations in general, vascular, and neurological surgery.
  • Professional registry: Surgeons must pass a national assessment to register with the Ordine dei Medici.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Surgeons at IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio represent a high standard of expertise. Dr. Roberto Bassani and Dr. Roberto Danchise both hold certifications from major Italian universities and international institutions. Our data shows these specialists often have handled over 2,500 to 16,000 procedures. This volume is a key indicator of surgical proficiency in the Italian system.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while the surgical expertise is very high, clinical communication can vary. Many recommend using translation services at major Milanese centers to ensure smooth results and clear follow-up instructions.

What is the typical recovery timeline after hip or knee replacement surgery in Italy?

Recovery after hip or knee replacement in Italy typically involves a 3 to 12 day hospital stay. Patients begin physiotherapy within 12 to 24 hours to promote mobility. Most individuals regain independence for daily activities within 4 weeks. Full joint integration often takes 6 to 12 months.

  • Early movement: Physiotherapy usually starts within 6 to 12 hours after the surgical procedure.
  • Hospital stay: Specialized Italian clinics report a median stay of 3 to 5 days.
  • Daily autonomy: Most patients walk indoors and sit without help within 2 to 4 weeks.
  • Driving resumption: Patients typically return to driving between 4 and 8 weeks post-surgery.
  • Professional return: Sedentary office work is generally possible within 4 to 6 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian orthopedic centers often serve as specialized hubs for complex cases. IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio performs 75% of all revision orthopedic surgeries in Italy. This high volume across their 600 doctors suggests that their recovery protocols are refined through managing the most difficult reconstructions.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that the first 2 weeks are the most challenging due to pain and swelling. They note that prioritizing range of motion exercises in the first month is essential to avoid long-term stiffness.

Am I a good candidate for outpatient arthroscopic meniscus or ACL surgery, and what tests will confirm it?

You are a candidate for outpatient arthroscopic surgery in Italy if you have mechanical knee instability or persistent meniscus locking. Candidates must be in good health with a stable support system for home recovery. In Italy, meniscus repairs are often same-day, while ACL reconstructions typically require 1–2 nights.

  • Confirmation tests: MRI remains the gold standard for confirming the exact location of knee tears.
  • Physical exams: Doctors use Lachman and pivot shift tests to verify ACL stability and meniscus integrity.
  • Surgical expertise: Dr. Roberto Danchise at IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio has performed 16,000+ arthroscopic procedures.
  • Pre-operative clearance: Clinics require blood tests and an electrocardiogram (ECG) to ensure safe surgical eligibility.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian orthopedic protocols often differ from international trends by requiring a short hospital stay for ACL cases. While meniscus trims are frequently outpatient, major facilities like IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio prioritize 2-day stays for reconstruction to monitor initial recovery. Choosing a private facility in Milan can often streamline access to these specialized surgical teams compared to public waitlists.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that being active and having a low BMI are key for same-day discharge. Many emphasize that having a translator is vital for navigating technical medical discussions in Italian hospitals.

What are the top-rated orthopedic hospitals in Italy?

Top-rated orthopedic hospitals in Italy include IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio and Humanitas Research Hospital. These Milan-based centers hold JCI and IRCCS certifications for excellence. They specialize in complex joint revisions, robotic surgery, and advanced spinal deformity treatments for international patients.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio is the primary hub for failed prior surgeries. This clinic manages most of Italy's complex revisions. Patients with previous surgical complications should prioritize centers with higher procedural volumes. These facilities typically house over 600 specialized doctors for better safety.

Patient Consensus: Patients value having a dedicated translator during their stay to navigate the medical process. Many note that major Milan centers provide faster access to elective surgery than other European regions.

How is an orthopedic emergency handled for visitors in Italy?

Visitors in Italy access orthopedic emergency care through the public Pronto Soccorso (ER). Urgent stabilization is provided regardless of insurance status. Patients with severe injuries should dial 112 or 118 for an ambulance. Triage levels determine wait times for non-life-threatening fractures or joint dislocations.

  • Public access: Emergency care is guaranteed at all public facilities, including Pronto Soccorso departments.
  • Specialized centers: IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio in Milan handles 75% of Italy's revision surgeries.
  • First-aid accreditation: Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy in Rome provides accredited first-aid orthopedic services.
  • Documentation needs: Non-EU visitors generally pay full costs for diagnostics like X-rays or MRIs.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While public ERs handle initial stabilization, follow-up care in Italy often involves significant delays. Data shows that top-tier facilities like IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio serve over 340,000 patients annually. Choosing a high-volume specialized center in Milan or Rome is better for complex trauma. These centers have the capacity for immediate surgical intervention that smaller regional clinics may lack.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it's important to go directly to the ER for major injuries rather than seeking private appointments. Since English fluency varies outside major cities, visitors suggest using translation apps to communicate with medical staff.

Are English-speaking orthopedic surgeons available for international patients?

English-speaking orthopedic surgeons are widely available in Italy. Major clinics in Milan and Rome provide dedicated international departments. Specialist centers like IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio offer language assistance. Many Italian surgeons hold memberships in international bodies like AO Spine and EuroSpine.

  • Language assistance: Clinics often include professional translation services in their standard surgical packages.
  • Bilingual surgeons: Many specialists completed clinical training in the USA, UK, or France.
  • Major hubs: Milan and Rome centers focus heavily on serving international medical tourists.
  • Specialized departments: High-volume centers like Humanitas Research Hospital maintain JCI accreditation and English-speaking staff.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian orthopedic centers are unique because they often combine research and clinical practice. IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio performs 75% of Italy's revision surgeries. This high volume of complex cases attracts international fellows. These teams naturally develop high English proficiency to handle global research and diverse patient cases.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that surgeons in Milan and Rome switch comfortably between Italian and English. While reception staff at some clinics may have limited English, dedicated translators often accompany patients during every step of their stay.

Can I obtain prescriptions and imaging reports from an Italian orthopedist?

Italian orthopedists provide official prescriptions and detailed imaging reports during both private and public consultations. You can receive signed paper prescriptions or digital e-prescriptions. Imaging results like MRI or X-ray reports are typically available immediately or via secure digital portals like the Fascicolo Sanitario Elettronico.

  • Prescription types: Doctors issue white private prescriptions or red national health service forms.
  • Digital access: Many clinics send PDF reports and e-prescriptions via email or WhatsApp.
  • Imaging results: Written reports are often digital, but physical DVDs may require in-person collection.
  • Language assistance: Clinics like IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio include translation services for international patients.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Statistics show IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio performs 75% of Italy's revision orthopedic surgeries. Their high volume means administrative systems for reports are very efficient. Patients often receive full preoperative test results and surgical plans during a single 2-day hospital stay. This integration is rare and significantly speeds up the documentation process compared to smaller clinics.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is important to ask for the full report and prescription upfront. While private doctors usually email documents quickly, some find that following up in person is the fastest way to get physical imaging discs.

What specialized orthopedic rehabilitation options exist for travelers?

Travelers in Italy access specialized orthopedic rehabilitation through JCI-accredited centers and private clinics offering accelerated recovery protocols. Options include FIFA-approved sports medicine, robotic-assisted therapy, and hydrotherapy at thermal spas. These programs integrate advanced diagnostics with personalized physical therapy to ensure safe return-to-travel timelines.

  • Sports rehabilitation: Clinic Villa Stuart provides FIFA-accredited recovery for high-impact athletes and active travelers.
  • Advanced spine care: IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio offers non-fusion techniques to preserve mobility after surgery.
  • Robotic-assisted therapy: Mater Olbia Hospital utilizes cutting-edge technology for precise post-operative knee and hip rehab.
  • Natural hydrotherapy: Centers in Fiuggi or Abano Terme offer traveler-friendly water-based therapy for joint recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio shows they perform 75% of Italy's revision orthopedic surgeries. This high volume makes them a hidden hub for travelers needing complex corrective rehab. Their expertise in revision cases often leads to more sophisticated recovery plans than standard local clinics. This is vital for patients traveling long distances for care.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is important to book private English-speaking physical therapists in cities like Milan or Rome via apps to avoid long public wait times. Many travelers mention that using hotel pools for daily movement significantly improves recovery compared to clinical sessions alone.

Which cities offer the shortest waiting times for joint-replacement or arthroscopic surgery?

Milan and Bologna offer the fastest access to orthopedic surgery in Italy. Private facilities in these northern hubs provide joint replacements and arthroscopic procedures within 1 to 4 weeks. This contrasts sharply with southern regions where public wait times for similar surgeries can exceed 24 months.

  • Milan access: Private clinics offer turnaround times of 1 to 2 weeks for arthroscopy.
  • Bologna efficiency: Facilities like Maria Cecilia Hospital are recognized for high-volume orthopedic performance.
  • Southern disparity: Patients often wait over 3 years for knee replacements in southern regions.
  • Clinical volume: IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio in Milan handles 343,500 annual patients.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a massive efficiency gap between northern and southern Italy. Clinics in Milan, such as IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio, perform 75% of Italy's revision surgeries. Their specialized focus and high patient volume allow these centers to streamline surgical scheduling much faster than general provincial hospitals.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that traveling to northern cities significantly cuts their waiting time from years to just months or weeks. Many emphasize that paying for private consultations in Milan or Rome is the quickest way to secure a surgical date.
