What's the cost for Orthopedics procedures in Turkey?

Orthopedics in Turkey typically costs from $5,400 to $16,600. Final costs depend on the complexity of the surgery, the choice of high-end or local implants, and the hospital's accreditation level. Patients often find 50-80% savings compared to the United States for major orthopedic procedures.

Typical Orthopedics Costs in Turkey

  • Consultation with an orthopaedist: $100 – $100
  • MRI of one area: $200 – $200
  • Hip replacement: Price on request
  • Knee replacement: $7,500 – $14,000
  • Limb lengthening surgery: Price on request
  • Surgical treatment of scoliosis: $19,900 – $24,000
  • Knee Arthroscopy: $1,800 – $3,200
  • Stem Cell Therapy: Price on request
  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy: Price on request
  • Physiotherapy: $100 – $100

Lokman Hekim Hospital left a profound impression on me with its genuine care for every patient
Lokman Hekim Hospital left a profound impression on me with its genuine care for every patient. Everything here is organized the way it should be in an ideal clinic: the staff is attentive, considerate, always ready to help, and does not just go through formal procedures. Unlike many expensive clinics, where everything feels cold and impersonal, where patients are treated almost like on a conveyor belt, here you truly feel involvement and empathy. Every step, every detail is thoughtfully planned with the patient in mind, creating a sense of safety and comfort. Here, they don’t just treat and send you away — they guide and support you at every stage, creating an atmosphere of trust and warmth. This approach makes the stay in the clinic as comfortable and reassuring as possible.
In short, my experience was simply amazing. I highly recommend Lokman Hekim among other Turkish clinics, in Istanbul and other cities, because everything here is truly top-notch. I have already shared more detailed impressions in other reviews, but in short — everything was perfect.

About Bookimed service
My experience with Bookimed was absolutely amazing. My sister even went with me to have blepharoplasty, and she immediately wanted to have her surgery at the same clinic where I had mine, because the plastic surgeon there was incredibly professional and outstanding. I can confidently recommend Bookimed to all my relatives, and I would gladly go again to this clinic and only to these doctors, because every specialist in the clinic is exceptional and excellent. Bookimed is truly an amazing platform. I am grateful that it exists because it is very important for people who cannot find the best doctors in their own countries. The platform helps to find the best options for each patient individually, offering different choices so that everyone can select what is optimal for them.

They all deserve top marks
Strange as it may sound, my overall rating is zero. That said, I can’t say a single bad word about either the surgeon or the clinic staff. They all deserve top marks. The doctor was very attentive and professional, and the support team did everything they could to help. The problem isn’t with the people. The problem is that the outcome of the consultation and what followed completely overshadowed all the positive impressions, leaving me in a very difficult situation during the recovery phase. The service was good, but the result was not.

Thanks to the successful operation, I started walking without a limp almost as soon as I tried doing so without crutches
Before the operation, I was most worried about a possible difference in leg length, but now they feel exactly the same. The operation was performed via an anterior approach using a Stryker implant. A huge thank you to the wonderful doctor, Professor Olcay Güler. He is always positive, a pleasure to talk to, and uses modern techniques as well as robotic surgery for procedures like this. Direct anterior access is the best option for those who want a faster and better recovery, and there are very few specialists who use this modern method. On the 7th day after the operation, I had already started walking without crutches, even though I hadn’t rushed my recovery; the doctors do recommend walking with crutches for two weeks. Thanks to the successful operation, I started walking without a limp almost as soon as I tried doing so without crutches. I should note that I deliberately didn’t walk with just one crutch; I used both, but walked with them using the Nordic walking technique with poles. I think this also helped me avoid limping straight away. If anyone needs joint replacement surgery, I highly recommend Professor Olcay Güler and the Memorial Şişli Clinic; a good doctor is the key to a successful return to normal life. And of course, a huge thank you to the Bookimed team and personally to coordinator Sergey, who patiently selected the clinic and doctor for me! In the early stages of recovery, the hardest thing for me is getting in and out of the car. A tip for future patients: prepare comfortable trousers without elastic at the bottom in advance, slip-on shoes, and a special device for putting on compression garments and socks – a butler or glider – will also come in very handy, but only if you’re doing everything without assistance.

There are no downsides, just one suggestion: to produce a short leaflet for the clinic’s patients setting out post-operative restrictions, initial exercises, and exercises for further rehabilitation six weeks later, when most restrictions will have been lifted.

The clinic facilities and the general staff were solid
If a friend asked about robotic knee replacement, I'd start with this: understand your whole body's situation first. For me, I’ve realized I need both hips revision, not just the knee, and that has a big impact on my overall progress. The clinic facilities and the general staff were solid. They were helpful. My main challenge is currently my walking distance. While the staff were supportive, my interactions with the surgeon felt a bit lacking, and I think that aspect could have been better. It’s a serious process with many moving parts to consider.

I am very satisfied with the choice of this clinic
At the Turan Turan Clinic, I had total hip replacement surgeries on both legs almost simultaneously, two days apart. The operation was categorised as complicated. From the very first days of my stay in the clinic until my discharge I was really surrounded by sincere care and attention of the doctor and medical staff and interpreter. I was placed in a very comfortable ward with everything I needed. The interpreter and assistant in the person of Eldar did not leave me a step and helped with translation, consulted, gave useful advice and literally led me by the hand to the doctors where I was examined, from the X-ray room to the anaesthesiologist before the operation. Preparation for the operation, collection of analyses, their study and consultation with doctor Kayhan Turan took little time. Everything went promptly. The surgery was performed by the head doctor Kayhan Turan himself, who has vast experience in orthopaedic surgeries. With his light hand and high level of professionalism, the two surgeries two days apart were very easy. Smith & Nephew prostheses were fitted. Both operations were performed under spinal anaesthesia, which in my case completely eliminated the unpleasant stage of coming out of anaesthesia. I was conscious during the operations. Subsequent rehabilitation took place in a hospital ward, where special medical simulators were used along with exercises to develop the joint and vessels. I am very satisfied with the choice of this clinic.

Thanks a lot to the great team!
I had to do an operation of the fracture of my little finger that happened during vacation in the South of Turkey. The organization was supported by Alisher Durdiyev and was very quick and helpful, even during the late evening. The surgery could be organized very quickly, the doctor Levent Yalcin, one of the rare hand surgeons, was extremely good, could incorporate my wishes and I was back with my family very quickly. The teams of nurses and doctors in the hospital was very good. Thanks a lot to the great team!

In my situation, this care truly gave me hope again
I came to Istanbul for intensive medical care with a complex case involving multiple conditions. Thanks to Bookimed and my French-speaking coordinator Fidan and her colleague, everything was organized flawlessly. They truly went above and beyond, adapting my care to my evolving needs with great responsiveness and compassion. From the moment I arrived at Florence Nightingale Hospital, everything was handled with remarkable efficiency: I consulted 7 specialist professors in one day, followed by comprehensive tests (full-body MRI, CT scan, EMG, blood tests) over the next few days. In less than a week, I had a complete diagnosis and all treatments in place. The medical team is exceptionally professional — both highly skilled and genuinely caring. Each professor took the time to explain the results and treatment options. I now receive monthly follow-ups with my specialists. The service goes far beyond medical care: the hospital provides daily transportation for appointments, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation sessions. In France, I would have waited months just to get a first specialist appointment. Here, everything was done within days. I highly recommend Bookimed and Florence Nightingale Hospital without hesitation. In my situation, this care truly gave me hope again.
I arrived with a very complex and serious medical case, and I was impressed by the speed and efficiency of my care. In less than a week, I consulted 7 specialist professors, all necessary tests were completed (full-body MRI, CT, EMG, comprehensive blood work), and my treatments are now in place with monthly follow-ups by the professors. On top of that, the hospital provides daily transport for all my treatments: physiotherapy, rehabilitation, etc. An incredible service. Florence Nightingale is an excellent facility in every respect, both medically and humanly.
Apart from my visceral fear of needles, honestly, nothing. I even have a dedicated French-speaking coordinator. And a terrace café to enjoy a cappuccino in the sun inside the hospital. I have never been taken care of this well in my life.
About Bookimed service
Bookimed gave me access to excellent medical care in Istanbul that I could never have obtained so quickly in France. The compassionate support from Fidan and her team made all the difference at a time when I was feeling particularly vulnerable. I would recommend them without hesitation.

I found the surgical staff and nurses in operating theatre to be extremely understanding and helpful. I was happy with the surgical procedure but would have liked a little more post-op feedback from the surgeon. Overall, though I was more than satisfied. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the treatment which I received from the nursing staff, especially at night, although I subsequently found out that they are very short staffed while not having at least one English speaking nurse on duty day or night.
Procedure was very good on the day of surgery. Friendly and helpful medical coordinator Friendly nurses during the day. However there was not even one English speaking nurse during every day and every night. The only means of communicating was by phone translator which became tiresome and frustrating.
There needs to be better understanding between the nursing staff and patients. Despite best efforts it all became overwhelming and frustrating. I don’t know why but it was difficult to inform the staff that I was vegetarian. Twice I needed to change the capither myself - seemingly because nurses see it below their station so need to find a nursing assistant to empty the capither bag. To summarise - the medical coordinator was extremely helpful; the care and help by surgical staff and theatre nursing staff was very good. However the treatment from many of the nurses left something to be desired.

Doctors at the highest level
PLUSES Doctors at the highest level...professionalism, attention, responsibility felt during the whole stay...nothing unnecessary was said...no promises were made that could not be realised later...we were very satisfied with the results of their work.... Medical equipment may not be the latest models, but the penultimate certainly ... The food is very tasty... The facilities in the ward create a comfortable stay... The location of the clinic is good... Many hotels of different categories within walking distance..... MINUSES The medical staff and service staff (cleaning of the ward) wish to be better...the clinic needs a little more review of the process of care of medical staff for patients...at night when the patient before surgery or after surgery should gain strength and rest, begins frequent going to the room...then the temperature to measure, then the pressure, then remembering about the drip to connect the next or remove the forgotten.... Another disadvantage is the proposal-proform with an indication of what services are included in the paid amount, and which are not ... I would like a more specific list...taking into account that the treatment plan has changed, the amount to be paid has also changed, and there is always a question whether it is paid or whether it is necessary to pay additionally...which causes inconvenience and worries "whether you have enough money".... The general impression of the clinic was good...despite the disadvantages.....
Professionalism of the medical team
Nursing and housekeeping.

It's now been about 1 1/2 months post surgery and I am pleased with the progress of my recovery. It seems that the implant and hip have aligned themselves nicely with the rest of the leg and foot . I can walk quite well. It seems that improving the strength in my leg will lead to greater recovery. I was pleasantly surprised by the professionalism , knowledge and concern of all people involved ; especially Booki Med med coordinator Dr. Olha who exhibited limitless patience and concern for my problems. FAQ about Orthopedics in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How can I verify the qualifications of an orthopedic surgeon in Turkey?

Verify Turkish orthopedic surgeons by checking their registration with the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) and the Turkish Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (TOTBID). Ensure they hold TOTEK board certification. Confirm the surgical facility carries Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation for safety.

  • Professional registration: Verify active licenses through the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) official registry.
  • Specialization standards: Confirm the surgeon is a certified Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist.
  • Board certification: Look for Turkish Orthopaedics and Traumatology Education Council (TOTEK) accreditation.
  • Facility accreditation: Ensure the hospital maintains JCI or ISO safety and quality certifications.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume clinics like Turan Turan Health Group often specialize exclusively in robotic orthopedics. Our data shows these centers perform 18,000+ patient procedures annually. This volume usually correlates with faster access to specialized implants like Smith & Nephew. Always ask if the surgeon has completed specific robotic-assisted training programs recently.

Patient Consensus: Patients often mention that having a dedicated native-speaking assistant makes the verification process much smoother. They note that seeing the surgeon’s professional confidence during the initial consultation helps confirm the credentials seen on paper.

Are the hospitals in Turkey safe and internationally accredited?

Most Turkish hospitals are highly safe and maintain international benchmarks through Joint Commission International (JCI) and ISO certifications. Turkey ranks among the global leaders in JCI-accredited facilities. High-volume centers in Istanbul and Bursa utilize advanced technologies like Smith & Nephew robotic systems for orthopedic care.

  • International accreditation: Turkey houses approximately 50 JCI-accredited hospitals, the gold standard for global patient safety.
  • Surgical expertise: Many orthopedic specialists, like Dr. Erkam Komurcu, have completed fellowships at institutions like UCLA.
  • Modern infrastructure: Major facilities like Memorial Şişli Hospital feature 13 operating rooms and serve 167 countries.
  • Legal authorization: Operating clinics must hold an International Health Tourism Authorization Certificate from the Ministry.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Our data shows that top-rated clinics with 4.7+ ratings, like Memorial Şişli, often include dedicated buddy programs. These services bridge communication gaps, which is vital for complex orthopedic recoveries. Clinics with high patient volumes, such as Turan Turan Health Group, frequently offer specialized robotic surgery packages that include all post-op diagnostics. This reduces the risk of unexpected medical needs during your stay.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that choosing surgeons with international training often leads to better communication and smoother recoveries. They emphasize the importance of getting detailed post-op protocols in writing before traveling home.

What is typically included in an all-inclusive orthopedic package?

All-inclusive orthopedic packages in Turkey typically bundle surgical fees, hospital stays, and local logistics into one fixed price. These plans cover pre-operative diagnostics, anesthesia, and private recovery rooms. Most include airport transfers and 24/7 translation services to help patients navigate their treatment journey.

  • Medical evaluations: Includes blood tests, chest X-rays, ECG mapping, and specialist consultations.
  • Surgical components: Covers surgeon fees, anesthesia, and implants like Smith & Nephew.
  • Hospital stay: Typically provides 5 nights in a private room with nursing care.
  • Logistics: Includes VIP airport-hotel-clinic transfers and coordinated hotel bookings for recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics with high patient volumes, such as Turan Turan Health Group with 18,000 annual patients, often provide rehabilitation equipment for hotel use. This allows patients to continue intensive physiotherapy privately between clinical sessions. Choosing such a package can significantly reduce the total time needed for your stay in Turkey.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while packages cover essentials, it is important to confirm the specific implant brand beforehand. Many rely on their personal coordinators to handle daily logistics like medications and local communication.

How long must I stay in Turkey after my surgery?

Orthopedic surgery in Turkey typically requires a stay of 7 to 14 days. This timeframe ensures you complete initial recovery milestones and post-operative checkups. Major procedures like joint replacements often involve 5 days in the hospital followed by 3 to 10 days of local hotel monitoring.

  • Hospital stay: Most major orthopedic surgeries require 5 days of inpatient clinical care.
  • Total duration: Clinical recommendations suggest 7 to 14 days total stay for safety.
  • Joint replacements: Hip and knee procedures usually require 10 days for mobility checks.
  • Spine surgery: Complex cases like scoliosis often need 10 to 14 days for stability.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a clear trend where high-volume centers like Turan Turan Health Group bundle 10 hotel nights into orthopedic packages. This is twice the standard hospital stay. This extra time allows for essential on-site rehabilitation using specialized simulators before you attempt a flight home.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that even if a clinic suggests a 5-day trip, planning for 10 to 14 days is safer. They emphasize that rushing to a flight can increase swelling, making the journey home very uncomfortable.

Is language support available throughout my treatment journey?

Most JCI-accredited orthopedic clinics in Turkey provide 24/7 language support and dedicated interpreters throughout the treatment journey. Multi-lingual coordinators typically manage communication from the first orthopedic consultation to post-operative physiotherapy. Facilities in Istanbul and Antalya often include these services in surgery packages.

  • Translator access: Dedicated interpreters often accompany patients during surgery prep and doctor exams.
  • Digital support: Many clinics provide 24/7 WhatsApp translation for immediate communication with medical staff.
  • Support locations: On-site language assistance is standard in major hubs like Istanbul and Antalya.
  • Clinic credentials: JCI-accredited centers like Memorial Şişli Hospital prioritize structured international patient services.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patient data shows a clear pattern where clinics with 4.5+ ratings, such as Turan Turan Health Group, provide more consistent bedside translation. High-volume centers often employ specialized medical interpreters who understand orthopedic terminology. This is crucial for complex cases like robotic knee replacements or scoliosis surgeries where technical details matter.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while doctors and coordinators speak fluent English, nursing staff on night shifts may only speak Turkish. They recommend using offline translation apps for simple requests and confirming 24/7 interpreter availability before arrival.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey for a major joint procedure?

Patients should plan to stay in Turkey for 14 to 21 days for major joint procedures. This timeframe covers pre-operative tests, the surgery, and hospital recovery. It also makes the long-haul flight back to Australia safer by reducing blood clot risks.

  • Clinical preparation: Pre-operative blood panels and imaging typically require 1–2 days before surgery.
  • Hospital admission: Expect 3–5 days of inpatient care for pain management and mobility training.
  • Recovery phase: Surgeons require 7–14 days of local hotel recovery for wound monitoring.
  • Flight clearance: Doctors provide a Fit to Fly certificate after assessing wound healing and stability.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients having robotic-assisted surgery at centres like Turan Turan Health Group often mobilise faster. Some patients begin walking with crutches only 24 hours after a robotic knee or hip replacement. Even so, the 14-day stay remains vital for monitoring internal healing before high-altitude travel.

Patient Consensus: Travellers find that staying two weeks allows for essential physiotherapy. This also avoids the discomfort of flying while joints are still significantly swollen. Many recommend slip-on shoes and professional assistance for the first few days of hotel recovery.

Can I bring someone with me to assist during my orthopaedic trip to Turkey?

Patients are encouraged to bring a companion for support during orthopaedic surgery in Turkey. Modern clinics provide comfortable private rooms with beds and meals for assistants. Major hospitals in Istanbul and Bursa include these logistics in all-inclusive surgical packages for patient safety.

  • Hospital accommodation: Most private hospitals provide a companion bed in your private suite.
  • Included meals: Clinics typically offer complimentary daily meals for one designated support person.
  • Mobility assistance: Companions manage airport transfers and hotel check-ins during the initial recovery.
  • Language support: Interpreters at centres like Anadolu Medical Center translate between doctors and companions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish orthopaedic centres often focus on fast-track recovery using robotic systems like MAKO. These technologies allow patients to begin walking within 24 hours. Having a companion available during this rapid first phase is vital for preventing falls.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that having someone along makes navigating airports and hotel rooms much easier while using crutches. They especially value the private hospital rooms where companions can stay right by their side throughout the stay in Turkey.

How do I verify the credentials of an orthopaedic surgeon in Turkey?

Verify an orthopaedic surgeon in Turkey by checking their diploma with the Turkish Ministry of Health. You should also confirm they are a member of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB). Board certification through the Turkish Orthopaedics and Traumatology Education Council (TOTEK) confirms they passed national specialist exams.

  • Professional registration: Confirm the surgeon is a member of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB).
  • Specialist certification: Check for TOTEK certification. This indicates high-level postgraduate training in orthopaedic surgery.
  • Academic standing: Look for titles such as Prof. Dr. or Assoc. Prof. Dr. at university hospitals.
  • International fellowships: Verify US or European training, such as clinical fellowships at UCLA or Pittsburgh.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that top Turkish surgeons often hold memberships in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). They also belong to local bodies like TOTBID. For example, Dr Kayhan Turan at Turan Turan Health Group maintains AAOS membership. This signals an alignment with international surgical standards. Choosing doctors with dual credentials helps ensure they use modern joint replacement techniques.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that leading Turkish specialists provide thorough pre-operative consultations. They often use physical models or digital scans to explain the procedure clearly. Many note that dedicated interpreters at clinics like Anadolu Medical Center make discussing treatment plans straightforward.

Are orthopaedic hospitals in Turkey accredited?

Major orthopaedic hospitals in Turkey hold international accreditation. Facilities such as Memorial Şişli Hospital and Hisar Hospital Intercontinental maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. This ensures strict safety protocols for surgeries like hip and knee replacements. Every clinic must also hold a mandatory Ministry of Health licence.

  • JCI accreditation: Memorial Healthcare Group was the first in Turkey to earn this certification.
  • ISO standards: Clinics like Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital follow ISO quality management systems.
  • Government licensing: Hospitals must hold a Health Tourism Authorisation Certificate to treat international patients.
  • Specialised centres: Facilities like Turan Turan Health Group focus exclusively on orthopaedics and robotics.

Bookimed Expert Insight: JCI accreditation often correlates with higher patient volumes from diverse regions. Memorial Şişli Hospital attracts patients from 167 countries. Clinical teams here are accustomed to different anatomical requirements and expectations. This leads to smoother communication and refined post-operative support for Australians.

Patient Consensus: Patients note the efficiency of diagnostic workups. Many complete tests and start surgery within a week in Turkey. They appreciate the professional nursing staff. Some recommend using a coordinator to bridge language gaps during night shifts.

What are the infection rates for orthopaedic surgeries in Turkey?

Orthopaedic surgeries in Turkey report surgical site infection rates between 2.55% and 4.3% based on clinical surveillance. Elective procedures, such as hip reconstructions, maintain lower rates of 2.21%. Top JCI-accredited facilities in Istanbul and Bursa follow international protocols to minimise post-operative complications.

  • Procedure specific: Hip prosthesis surgeries show a 3.5% infection rate across major Turkish cities.
  • Elective vs emergency: Scheduled reconstructions have lower risks than emergency trauma cases at 5.53%.
  • Leading pathogens: Staphylococcus aureus causes 22.5% of infections, followed by Escherichia coli.
  • Accredited safety: Memorial Şişli and Anadolu Medical Center hold JCI accreditation for patient safety.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkey offers sub-specialised infection management. Dr Ireneusz Babiak at Carolina Hospital focuses on bone inflammation and joint endoprosthesis infections. Clinics with robotic technology, like Turan Turan Health Group, often use MAKO systems. These systems improve surgical precision and help reduce wound exposure time during joint replacements.

Patient Consensus: Patients are highly satisfied with the anterior approach and Stryker implants used in Istanbul. They note that modern techniques led to walking without crutches within one week. Those in Bursa highlight the excellent care and use of Smith & Nephew prostheses. These patients report smooth recoveries under careful supervision.

What happens if I experience complications after returning to Australia following orthopaedic surgery in Turkey?

Australian patients experiencing complications after orthopaedic surgery in Turkey receive emergency stabilisation through Medicare. Non-urgent issues require a GP referral for local specialist consultation. Finding specialists to manage overseas cases is often difficult. This is due to liability concerns and missing documentation regarding specific implants or protocols.

  • Emergency care: Public hospitals handle life-threatening issues like blood clots or infections under Medicare.
  • Clinical records: Australian surgeons require English-language operative notes and specific implant serial numbers.
  • Financial gap: Medicare does not cover elective revision surgeries for procedures performed abroad.
  • Insurance limits: Standard travel insurance typically excludes complications arising from planned medical tourism.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish centres like Turan Turan Health Group use recognisable international hardware brands. These include Smith & Nephew or Stryker. Patients should request the specific implant ID card before discharge. Having these exact specifications makes it easier for Australian specialists to perform necessary maintenance or revisions.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey suggest arranging a local GP follow-up before leaving Australia. They highlight the importance of bringing home printed English reports and imaging on a USB. This helps provide smooth care and support during recovery in Australia.

What types of implants and prosthetics do Turkish orthopaedic surgeons use?

Turkish orthopaedic surgeons use FDA-approved and CE-certified international brands such as Stryker, Smith & Nephew, and Medtronic. Centres often combine these with robotic systems like MAKO for precise joint positioning. Facilities also use locally made 3D-printed titanium components to support rapid bone growth.

  • Joint replacement: Surgeons use premium Stryker and Smith & Nephew systems for exact skeletal alignment.
  • Spinal hardware: Specialists use Medtronic pedicle screws, rods, and cages for complex scoliosis corrections.
  • Trauma fixation: Doctors use titanium locking plates and intramedullary nails to stabilise bone fractures.
  • Bionic prosthetics: Rehabilitation teams provide microprocessor-controlled limbs from Ottobock and Össur for mobility.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Surgeons at Turan Turan Health Group often perform several thousand robotic-assisted surgeries. This experience level typically allows them preferred access to the latest titanium and ceramic components. As a result, patients receive the newest bearing surfaces available on the global market.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report smooth recoveries using Stryker and Smith & Nephew implants. They are often walking without assistance within one week. Patients emphasise asking for an implant card. This helps Australian doctors identify the hardware during future check-ups.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey for recovery after orthopaedic surgery?

Australian patients should plan for 14 to 21 days in Turkey after major procedures like hip or knee replacements. Minimum stays cover initial wound care and crucial mobility checks. Surgeons must provide a fit-to-fly certificate before patients board a long-haul commercial flight home.

  • Arthroscopic surgery: Plan 3 to 5 days for keyhole knee or shoulder procedures.
  • Hand or wrist: Expect 5 to 7 days to manage swelling and wound seals.
  • Complex open surgery: Requires 14 days for structural monitoring and infection prevention.
  • Joint replacements: Stay 21 days to reduce deep vein thrombosis (DVT) risks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics with 25+ years of experience, like Turan Turan Health Group, often provide specialised robotic rehabilitation. These facilities use Lokomat systems to improve mobility. This support makes the early recovery phase much safer for patients facing the long flight back to Australia.

Patient Consensus: Patients note the importance of bringing a support person. They recommend taking physiotherapy equipment to the hotel. While walking starts quickly, navigating cars and dressing remains challenging without a helper during those first few weeks in Turkey.

How is post-operative physical therapy managed for international patients in Turkey?

Post-operative physical therapy in Turkey involves immediate hospital-based mobilisation followed by intensive outpatient rehabilitation. Specialists start therapy within 24 hours to prevent clots and improve mobility. International patients receive digital exercise plans and surgical reports for seamless care with their local GP or physiotherapist in Australia.

  • Hospital phase: Therapists provide daily supervised sessions immediately to assist walking and basic movement.
  • Clinical technology: Major centres like Memorial Göztepe Hospital provide Lokomat robotic rehabilitation for complex cases.
  • Hotel recovery: Clinics like Turan Turan Health Group allow patients to use specialised equipment in-room.
  • Home transition: Doctors provide digital operative notes and imaging for follow-up care in Australia.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Our data shows that while most hospitals provide daily sessions, some specialist centres like Fizyomer Terapia deliver up to 12 sessions daily. This intensive approach can significantly compress the typical 2-week recovery window. Patients should confirm if their package includes a mobile therapist for hotel-based sessions before booking.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that walking often begins within 24 hours. They emphasise the value of having a companion for the first 3 weeks. They also recommend getting written exercise guides for Turkey and home.
