Doctors at the highest level
PLUSES Doctors at the highest level...professionalism, attention, responsibility felt during the whole stay...nothing unnecessary was said...no promises were made that could not be realised later...we were very satisfied with the results of their work.... Medical equipment may not be the latest models, but the penultimate certainly ... The food is very tasty... The facilities in the ward create a comfortable stay... The location of the clinic is good... Many hotels of different categories within walking distance..... MINUSES The medical staff and service staff (cleaning of the ward) wish to be better...the clinic needs a little more review of the process of care of medical staff for patients...at night when the patient before surgery or after surgery should gain strength and rest, begins frequent going to the room...then the temperature to measure, then the pressure, then remembering about the drip to connect the next or remove the forgotten.... Another disadvantage is the proposal-proform with an indication of what services are included in the paid amount, and which are not ... I would like a more specific list...taking into account that the treatment plan has changed, the amount to be paid has also changed, and there is always a question whether it is paid or whether it is necessary to pay additionally...which causes inconvenience and worries "whether you have enough money".... The general impression of the clinic was good...despite the disadvantages.....
Professionalism of the medical team
Nursing and housekeeping.

"The result of the surgery is excellent
The clinic is very large, the conditions in the room were very good, there was even a folding chair for an attendant. Food was brought for both of us. The doctor aroused confidence from the very first consultation. But also a whole team was engaged in my operation and they are all great professionals. Nurses have also always been very helpful.

Expert Overview about Scoliosis Treatment in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What treatment options are available for scoliosis in Turkey?

Turkey offers advanced scoliosis treatments including spinal fusion, vertebral body tethering (VBT), and the ApiFix system. JCI-accredited hospitals in Istanbul utilize robotic-assisted systems and neuromonitoring for high precision. Specialist surgeons often hold international certifications from the Scoliosis Research Society and North American Spine Society.

  • Surgical fusion: Gold standard using Stryker implants to realign severe spinal curvatures.
  • Non-fusion VBT: Preserves spinal mobility in growing children using flexible cords instead of rods.
  • ApiFix system: Minimally invasive alternative for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis available at specialized centers.
  • Diagnostics: Comprehensive staging involves 3D CT scans, MRI, and consultations with neurosurgeons.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from leading Turkish centers shows a shift toward motion-preserving technologies like ApiFix and VBT for younger patients. While spinal fusion is common, clinics like Adatip International offer ApiFix for around $15,000. This includes five days of hospitalization and three hotel nights. Patients should prioritize surgeons like Dr. Yusuf Bayram or Dr. Erkan Kaptanoglu, who have performed over 1,000 to 2,700 neurological and spinal procedures.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is important to choose JCI-accredited facilities and verify the surgeon's specific case volume. Many appreciate the inclusion of translators and full-board meals, which makes the recovery process much more comfortable.

When is surgery necessary?

Surgery for scoliosis is necessary when the spinal curvature exceeds 40 to 50 degrees or progresses by more than 5 degrees annually. Turkish specialists recommend intervention to prevent lung compression, protect nerve function, and alleviate debilitating pain that resists conservative physical therapy or bracing.

  • Curve threshold: Operation is generally required for adult or pediatric curves over 45 degrees.
  • Rapid progression: Surgery is prioritized if the curve worsens by 5+ degrees in one year.
  • Organ protection: Critical intervention prevents the rib cage from compressing the heart or lungs.
  • Technological safety: Turkish centers use Stryker implants and real-time neuromonitoring to protect spinal nerves.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a major shift toward two-stage procedures at JCI-accredited centers like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental to handle complex adult curves safely. While a one-stage surgery may cost around $15,400, more severe cases requiring 14 to 21 hospital nights can reach approximately $26,250. This extended stay ensures the highest safety levels during the critical early recovery phase for long-segment fusions.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that while the curve degree matters, the real decision driver is the impact on breathing and daily movement. Many note that having an experienced translator and a supportive medical team made the intensive recovery process much more manageable.

What is the success rate for scoliosis surgery in Turkey?

Turkey reports a scoliosis surgery success rate between 80% and 95% at specialized spine centers. Leading institutions achieve 95% spinal correction and 92% pain reduction. Advanced techniques like the Cotrel-Dubousset method and robotic-assisted systems ensure high precision and low complication rates for international patients.

  • Correction rate: Top-tier Turkish hospitals report up to 95% successful spinal realignment.
  • Pain reduction: Clinical data shows a 92% success rate in long-term pain management.
  • Technological impact: Intraoperative neuromonitoring and Stryker systems reduce risks during complex fusions.
  • Minimally invasive: Specialized clinics achieve 92% success using endoscopic and muscle-sparing approaches.

Bookimed Expert Insight: A high success rate often correlates with a surgeon's specific case volume rather than just clinic rankings. For example, Dr. Erkan Kaptanoglu has performed over 2,700 neurosurgery cases. This depth of experience is why clinics like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental can manage 250,000 patients annually with high safety levels.

Patient Consensus: Patients are often surprised by the dramatic visual results, noting significant curve reductions from 50 to 15 degrees. They emphasize finding a surgeon with specialized memberships like the Scoliosis Research Society to ensure the best functional outcomes.

How long should I plan to stay in Turkey?

Patients should plan to stay in Turkey for 14 to 21 days for scoliosis treatment. This timeframe includes 5 to 7 days of hospitalization and 7 to 10 days of local recovery. Extending the stay helps prevent deep vein thrombosis during long flights home.

  • Hospital duration: Most surgical packages include 5 to 7 days of inpatient monitoring.
  • Recovery buffer: Patients typically remain in a local hotel for 7 to 15 days.
  • Clinical milestone: Final X-rays and follow-up visits usually occur 10 days after surgery.
  • Travel safety: Surgeons recommend staying 2 weeks post-op to ensure safe flying conditions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many expect a standard 10-day trip, our data shows clinics like Estexper Clinic include up to 15 hotel nights in their surgery packages. This extended stay is a high-value differentiator. It ensures patients reach the 2-week recovery mark before flying, which significantly reduces travel-related risks after complex spinal fusion.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize building in a few extra days for unexpected recovery delays and recommend booking flexible return flights. Many note that having an attendant stay in the room is common and very helpful during the initial hospital days.

How long is the recovery period?

Recovery from scoliosis surgery in Turkey typically involves 5 to 7 days of hospitalization followed by 7 to 15 days of local monitoring. Most patients return to light activity and desk work within 6 to 8 weeks. Full physical recovery usually takes 12 to 18 months.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 5 to 7 nights for monitoring and pain management.
  • Initial mobility: Patients generally begin walking with assistance within 2 to 4 days.
  • Travel readiness: International patients typically fly home 2 to 3 weeks after the procedure.
  • Activity restrictions: Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise are restricted for 4 to 6 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a package with extended hotel stays significantly aids the transition from clinical care to travel. For example, Estexper Clinic includes 15 hotel days for recovery. This allows surgeons like Dr. Erkan Kaptanoglu to conduct multiple follow-up checks before the patient flies home. Longer local stays often correlate with smoother long-term healing for international patients traveling from the USA or Australia.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that the 3-month mark is a major psychological turning point when progress feels more visible. Preparing a home setup with grabber tools and elevated bedding before surgery helps manage the first 4 weeks of limited mobility.

Can I do sports after scoliosis surgery?

Most patients return to sports within 6 to 12 months after scoliosis surgery. Modern techniques using pedicle screws or the ApiFix system provide spinal stability for active recovery. Low-impact activities like swimming often begin at 3 months with surgical clearance.

  • Recovery timeline: Walking starts immediately while light swimming or cycling begins at 3 months.
  • Contact sports: Activities like football typically require 12 months for full bone fusion.
  • Flexibility limits: Spinal fusion may permanently restrict movements in gymnastics or professional dance.
  • Advanced technology: Systems like Stryker and ApiFix allow for tailored, motion-preserving recovery protocols.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a surgeon with high volume, like Dr. Yusuf Bayram who has performed over 1,000 procedures, often leads to more precise recovery timelines. Our data shows that Turkish clinics frequently include 7-day hospital stays in packages, which is longer than the global average. This extended initial monitoring helps specialists catch early signs of hardware strain before patients start physical therapy for sports.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is important to have a dedicated translator to understand the exact limits on twisting and bending. Many report that while the first few months feel stiff, specialized physical therapy in Turkey helped them regain the confidence to swim and cycle sooner than expected.

Who are the top scoliosis surgeons in Turkey?

Top scoliosis surgeons in Turkey include Dr. Ahmet Alanay, Prof. Dr. Azmi Hamzaoglu, and Prof. Dr. Cagatay Ozturk. These specialists operate in JCI-accredited centers. They utilize advanced technologies like the Mazor X robotic system and Vertebral Body Tethering to treat complex spinal curvatures.

  • Dr. Yusuf Bayram: Specializes in complex deformities at Hisar Hospital with 1,000+ spinal procedures performed.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many patients focus only on the lead surgeon, the presence of neuromonitoring technology is a critical quality marker. At Hisar Hospital Intercontinental, Dr. Yusuf Bayram uses this to track nerve function in real-time. This significantly improves safety during high-complexity multi-stage corrections for severe scoliosis cases.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that the physical recovery environment is excellent, often noting that hospital rooms feel like comfortable hotels. Multiple reviews highlight that having a professional translator present is essential for feeling confident during detailed medical consultations.

What are the potential risks and complications of scoliosis surgery in Turkey?

Scoliosis surgery in Turkey is generally safe. JCI-accredited centres report complication rates below 5%. Common risks include surgical site infections, blood loss, and implant issues. Neuromonitoring helps surgeons manage rare neurological risks. Most patients recover well within twelve to fifteen days.

  • Infection management: Surgical site infection risks are around 1–2% in sterile hospital environments.
  • Neuromonitoring use: Surgeons use real-time signals to track spinal cord safety during the procedure.
  • Implant stability: Modern Stryker implants reduce the chance of rods shifting or breaking later.
  • Blood loss: Specialists use techniques to manage significant blood loss during surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Technical safety often depends on the hardware used. While many Turkish clinics offer competitive pricing, packages from Estexper Clinic include Stryker implants. Higher-tier packages at Hisar Hospital also bundle 2-stage or 3-stage neuromonitoring. This provides a high level of spinal cord protection throughout complex multi-level fusions.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey describe professional teams and comfortable ward facilities that aid recovery. They note that having translators helps them understand every safety step and post-operative instruction clearly.

What is the typical recovery timeline after having scoliosis surgery in Turkey?

Recovery after scoliosis surgery in Turkey typically involves a 7-day hospital stay. This is followed by 2 weeks of local monitoring. Most patients return to light activities within 6 weeks. Full bone fusion and a return to normal life generally take 6 to 12 months.

  • Hospital phase: Patients usually stay 7 nights for monitoring and assisted walking practice.
  • Initial mobility: Most people begin walking with assistance within 1 to 3 days after surgery.
  • Local recovery: Surgeons often require 15 days in Turkey before clearing patients for international flights.
  • Functional milestones: Basic self-care becomes manageable within 6 weeks as surgical soreness subsides.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish packages often include 15 nights of hotel accommodation. The first 14 days carry the highest fatigue levels. Clinics like Estexper Clinic bundle this stay so patients are stable before the flight to Australia. This period is vital for managing pain and checking the wound heals before travel.

Patient Consensus: Patients note the first fortnight is the most physically demanding due to intense tiredness. They highlight that recovery often feels non-linear, with good days following periods of stiffness.

What surgical techniques are used for scoliosis treatment in Turkey?

Turkish surgical centres use scoliosis techniques including posterior segmental instrumentation with Stryker pedicle screws and rods. High-volume specialists perform motion-preserving methods like ApiFix and multi-stage corrections. Most JCI-accredited hospitals integrate real-time neuromonitoring to protect spinal cord function during surgery.

  • Posterior instrumentation: Surgeons use rods and Stryker pedicle screws to stabilise and straighten the spine.
  • ApiFix system: This minimally invasive non-fusion implant provides dynamic correction for moderate curves.
  • Neuromonitoring data: Specialists use intraoperative monitoring to track nerve signals. This helps prevent neurological injuries.
  • Multi-stage approaches: Complex deformities may require 1-stage, 2-stage, or 3-stage surgical plans.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish neurosurgeons and orthopaedists often specialise in high-complexity cases. Some doctors report over 2,700 neurosurgery procedures. Posterior fusion is standard. However, specialised clinics like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental offer staged surgeries. This allows surgeons to manage severe Cobb angles more safely than a single long operation.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey highlight the professionalism of multidisciplinary teams. They also note the importance of confirming the surgical approach beforehand. Experience shows that translator support and coordinated nursing care help the recovery process.

Are there scoliosis specialists in Turkey for both children and adults?

Turkey hosts scoliosis specialists for children and adults at JCI-accredited centres. Experts like Prof. Cagatay Ozturk and Dr Emre Acaroglu specialise in complex spinal deformities. They use neuromonitoring and robotic systems to increase surgical safety and improve patient outcomes.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many surgeons perform spinal work. However, Turkish specialists like Dr Emre Acaroglu at Memorial Ankara have focused on scoliosis for 30 years. Data shows clinics like Hisar Hospital perform approximately 250,000 procedures annually. Patients should look for surgeons who belong to the Scoliosis Research Society for complex cases.

Patient Consensus: Patients feel confident with these professional teams. They often mention comfortable rooms and helpful translators in Istanbul. Turkish medical specialists provide attentive recovery support for children and adults.

What options are available for scoliosis treatment in Turkey besides surgery?

Turkey offers several non-surgical scoliosis treatments including the Schroth method, custom bracing, and physical therapy. Specialists also provide stem cell therapy and targeted rehabilitation to manage pain. These conservative approaches focus on slowing curve progression in children and improving spinal function in adults.

  • Schroth therapy: 3D exercises improve posture and strengthen muscles supporting the spine at specialised clinics.
  • Custom bracing: Orthopaedists use tailored corsets to prevent worsening curves in adolescents still growing.
  • Stem cell therapy: Some clinics, such as Estophia Hospital, offer regenerative options for spinal conditions.
  • Clinical rehabilitation: Specialists like Dr Mustafa Tekkesin provide percutaneous spinal procedures and specialised rehabilitation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many search for non-surgical fixes. Leading Istanbul centres like Memorial Şişli Hospital prioritise comprehensive diagnostics including 3D CT scans. Our data shows that top Turkish neurosurgeons often integrate conservative care with monitoring technologies. This helps ensure spinal stability before recommending any intervention.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that Turkish specialists inspire confidence through professionalism and clear communication. Many highlight that the medical equipment is excellent. They also suggest confirming what treatment plans include to help manage expectations.

When can a patient return to sports after scoliosis treatment in Turkey?

Patients typically resume light activities within 4 to 8 weeks after scoliosis surgery in Turkey. Most return to non-contact sports after 3 to 6 months. High-impact contact sports usually require waiting 6 to 12 months. This timing depends on the number of vertebrae fused and surgeon approval.

  • Light activity: Patients start walking or stationary cycling approximately 4–8 weeks after the procedure.
  • Baseline competition: Adolescent athletes often return to their competitive baseline level within 3–6 months.
  • Contact sports: Rugby and football usually require restricted activity for 6–12 months for safety.
  • Stable results: Modern pedicle screw methods provide high stability, which helps support a faster recovery.
  • Personalised recovery: Surgeons like Prof. Cagatay Ozturk tailor timelines based on the specific vertebral segments fused.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish centres often include extended 15-night hotel stays in scoliosis packages. Estexper Clinic is one example. This time lets patients finish their 4-week follow-up and start supervised light rehabilitation. It also reduces the risk of long-haul travel complications during early recovery.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report excellent results and appreciate the professional team approach. Having an attendant chair and inclusive meals makes the initial recovery period more comfortable for families.

How do doctors in Turkey diagnose scoliosis and plan treatment?

Doctors in Turkey diagnose scoliosis using 3D CT scans, MRI, and spinal X-rays. They use these to assess bone structure and nerve health. Specialists like Prof. Dr. Deniz Konya or Dr. Emre Acaroglu create plans. These involve bracing, posterior segmental instrumentation, or neuromonitored surgery to protect the spinal cord.
