"Israel is a really high level and professionalism of doctors
Hello! Thank you for organizing my mom’s treatment. The host, organizers, are professionals and have done everything possible for quick surgery and meeting with doctors. Denis and his team seem to be working around the clock. Great fellows! Doctors are awesome! Attentive and very caring. And most importantly, knowledgeable. The operation went well and we are very pleased with everything. The room was comfortable. All that is needed. The only thing is Ichilov Center - a state hospital, the attendants did not always provide the services expected from them. But our host always did everything possible to quickly eliminate certain situations. They patronized us constantly. Israel is a really high level and professionalism of doctors. We were very pleased.

FAQ about Orthopedics in Israel

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Why is Israel a top choice for orthopedic surgery?

Israel is a premier destination for orthopedics due to its elite surgical expertise and native medical innovations. Highly skilled surgeons utilize robotic-assisted systems like MAKO and OrthoSpin for extreme precision. These centers provide high-volume experience in joint replacements and complex spinal corrections within JCI-accredited facilities.

  • Advanced technology: Surgeons use MAKOplasty and ROSA robotic systems for hip and knee replacements.
  • Specialized expertise: Dr. Ron Arbel at Sourasky Medical Center (Ichilov) leads in cartilage regeneration.
  • Pediatric care: Dr. Segev Eitan directs specialized limb deformity corrections at Dana Children's Hospital.
  • Regenerative medicine: Clinics offer stem cell and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapies for biological reconstruction.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli orthopedic centers, like Sourasky, often serve as primary testing sites for global medical patents. Patients here access proprietary technologies like the OrthoSpin robotic fixation system before they reach most European hospitals. This early adoption allows surgeons to refine complex limb-lengthening protocols with higher precision than standard manual methods.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while costs for care are higher than in some regions, the level of medical professionalism is exceptional. Many emphasize that having a dedicated coordinator helps navigate the busy environment of large state hospitals like Ichilov.

What advanced technologies are used in Israeli orthopedic clinics?

Israeli orthopedic clinics utilize advanced robotic systems and AI-driven planning to enhance surgical precision and patient outcomes. Facilities integrate technologies like the OrthoSpin robotic external fixation system and MAKOplasty for joint replacements. These tools allow for sub-millimeter accuracy and faster recovery times. Surgeons also employ 3D-printed implants tailored to unique patient anatomy.

  • Robotic systems: OrthoSpin and MAKOplasty provide automated bone correction and precise joint alignment.
  • 3D technology: Surgeons like Dr. Sternheim Amir use 3D planning for custom patient-specific implants.
  • Regenerative medicine: Clinics offer stem cell therapy and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for cartilage repair.
  • Surgical techniques: Minimally invasive ALMIS and arthroscopic methods reduce tissue trauma and scarring.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that high-volume centers like Sourasky Medical Center (Ichilov) integrate robotics across multiple sub-specialties. For example, Dr. Segev Eitan specifically uses the OrthoSpin system for complex limb deformities. Choosing a clinic that manufactures 3D-printed implants in-house can significantly reduce the wait time for personalized surgical components.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while treatment costs in Israel are significant, the level of specialist knowledge is exceptional. Many emphasize that having a professional coordination team helps manage the busy environment of large state hospitals like Ichilov.

How long is the typical recovery period after orthopedic procedures in Israel?

Recovery after orthopedic surgery in Israel typically ranges from 4 weeks to 4 months. Patients often begin mobilization within 24 hours of surgery at centers like Sourasky Medical Center. Complete functional independence generally occurs by month 4 for major procedures like hip or knee replacements.

  • Joint replacement: Patients often resume normal lifestyles within 6 weeks of surgery.
  • Spine procedures: Minimally invasive surgeries like discectomy involve a 1-month recovery period.
  • Ankle surgery: Most patients walk without crutches 2 weeks after an ankle replacement.
  • Rehabilitation focus: Intensive physiotherapy starts on Day 1 to improve flexibility and range.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows Israeli clinics like Assuta Medical Center maintain high surgical volumes, performing 92,000 operations annually. This experience allows surgeons to prefer bone-preserving and minimally invasive techniques. These methods often reduce hospital stays to under 24 hours for complex spine cases. This efficiency speeds up the transition to outpatient rehab.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that starting physical therapy on the first day is vital for faster healing. They also suggest tracking swelling closely to potentially shorten the early recovery phase by up to 2 weeks.

Which orthopedic procedures are most commonly performed in Israel?

Hip and knee replacements are the most common orthopedic procedures in Israel, with over 10,000 surgeries performed annually. Specialized centers also prioritize arthroscopic repairs for ACL and rotator cuff injuries. Leading facilities like Sourasky Medical Center utilize MAKO robotic systems and OrthoSpin technology for precision.

  • Joint replacement: Hip and knee surgeries often involve robotic-assisted MAKOplasty techniques.
  • Arthroscopic surgery: Minimally invasive ACL reconstruction and meniscus repairs allow faster recovery.
  • Spinal procedures: Surgeons perform complex scoliosis corrections and endoscopic discectomies routinely.
  • Pediatric orthopedics: Specialized care includes limb lengthening and correction of congenital deformities.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli orthopedic departments stand out by integrating home-grown tech like OrthoSpin into daily practice. While many countries use standard external fixators, Dr. Segev Eitan at Sourasky Medical Center pioneered robotic systems for limb correction. This technology automates adjustments, which significantly improves accuracy compared to manual methods used elsewhere.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that surgeons often have extensive experience with complex trauma cases. They appreciate being able to book arthroscopic procedures like ACL repairs within the same week of consultation.

Can international patients obtain a second opinion from an Israeli orthopedic specialist?

International patients can obtain a second opinion from Israeli orthopedic specialists through remote video consultations or medical file reviews. Experts at centers like Sourasky Medical Center provide assessments for joint replacements, spinal surgery, and orthopedic oncology. Patients receive formal reports including diagnosis verification and personalized treatment recommendations.

  • Remote access: Consultations occur via Zoom or WhatsApp using digital MRI and CT scans.
  • Expert diversity: Specialists like Dr. Ron Arbel focus on arthroscopy and biological joint reconstruction.
  • Oncology focus: Dr. Jakov Bikels provides second opinions specifically for metastatic bone disease cases.
  • Pediatric expertise: Dr. Segev Eitan offers specialized reviews for complex childhood limb deformities.
  • Required data: Patients must provide digital imaging, biopsy reports, and current surgical treatment plans.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli orthopedists often hold multiple international fellowships, particularly from top US and UK institutions. For instance, Dr. Ehud Rat and Dr. Maman Eran bring techniques from the UK and Canada directly to their Israeli practice. This global training ensures your second opinion aligns with the latest international surgical protocols and innovation.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while prices for consultations can be high, the level of medical knowledge is exceptional. Many find that uploading digital scans early and having a full medical history ready helps speed up the scheduling process significantly.

Do Israeli hospitals provide support for non-Hebrew-speaking patients?

Israeli hospitals provide extensive support for non-Hebrew-speaking patients through multilingual staff and dedicated international departments. Ministry of Health regulations require essential medical forms in English, Arabic, and Russian. Facilities like Sourasky Medical Center and Hadassah Medical Center employ coordinators to assist with 1,000,000+ annual patient visits.

  • International departments: Specialized wings at centers like Assuta Medical Center manage logistics for foreigners.
  • Language hotline: The Ministry of Health provides simultaneous translation in 5+ languages during consultations.
  • Multilingual documentation: Informed consent and discharge forms are legally available in English and Russian.
  • Staff proficiency: Surgeons like Dr. Aviram Gold and Dr. Luger Elchanan often maintain English fluency.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a clear trend where private facilities like Assuta Medical Center offer more personalized language support. While state hospitals like Sourasky Medical Center serve 1.8 million patients, they may have busier administrative staff. Choosing a private center often guarantees a dedicated coordinator who stays with you during every orthopedic consultation or diagnostic test.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while surgeons and specialists speak excellent English, there can be communication gaps with nursing or cleaning staff. It is helpful to have a local coordinator or translation app ready for quick interactions in the recovery ward.
