"It is unfortunate that politics affects not only ordinary citizens, but also their children
We successfully operated on our daughter Nika Popova at the San Donato clinic (Italy). Thank you so much for the Bookimed service for the excellent organization of the trip. Our manager Aleksey Karaganov was always in touch and helped with all issues (visas, booking, medical and legal issues). The clinic, staff, ward are all at the highest level and the main thing is that real masters of their craft work there. Our attending physicians were delighted with the results of the most complicated heart surgery, the Ross operation. It is unfortunate that politics affects not only ordinary citizens, but also their children. I wish you patience, kindness and health to you and your loved ones, so that as many children from all over the world as possible can receive help. Thank you very much to Alexei and your entire team.

Thanks to the consultation of Dr
We had an online consultation with Dr. Carlo de Vincentiis, through a female translator. The translator translated everything word for word, there were no barriers in communicating with the doctor. Before the consultation, a CT scan and ultrasound were sent to the clinic in advance. After studying the materials, Dr. Carlo de Vincentiis explained everything clearly and in detail. He told me how to live further, what to do... My only regret is that I did not go to this clinic earlier. After all, if we had contacted earlier, we could have lived these two years completely differently - fearing for life and health. Thanks to the consultation of Dr. Carlo de Vincentiis, I understand WE WILL LIVE!!! Let's enjoy life! Thanks a lot!!!
Humanity, understanding... everything that was missing in communication with our doctors.

So, he was very knowledgeable, very genius and expertise
It was full of information consultation and Dr Francesco Maisano was very generous in providing us with multiple solutions for my father's case with mentioning the best solution among them and why it was the best solution. So, he was very knowledgeable, very genius and expertise. I strongly recommend this service. One issue was that the bookimed was helpful, very fast in replying but the files I sent to them to share it with Dr Francesco Maisano, they didn't share it all, but it was fixed shortly. Overall, it was an excellent experience. Special thanks to Dr Francesco Maisano, thank you San Donato hospital and thank you Bookimed team.
Dr Francesco Maisano was expertise, knowledgeable and intelligent.
The files I sent to Bookimed wasn't shared all with Dr Francesco Maisano.
About Bookimed service
The team of Bookimed was helpful, active, but when they didn't share all of our files with the hospital, I found it a kind of negligence.

"I can safely recommend this doctor, operations are performed here every day, everything is thought out to the smallest detail and you do not care, as in Moscow, for example, what equipment or conditions for treatment are lacking
I'll tell you how it all happened, maybe it will help someone make their choice. I'll start with the fact that I was looking for a clinic for a long time to treat my son both in Europe and in Russia. The son is 5 years old, it was necessary to carry out a radical operation on the aortic valve, plastic or Rosa operation. The second is very difficult to perform, so it was important to find a surgeon with extensive experience. Alessandro Frigiola has a lot of experience. In Moscow, there are generally few reviews about Italian medicine, but after visiting here I can safely recommend this doctor, operations are performed here every day, everything is thought out to the smallest detail and you do not care, as in Moscow, for example, what equipment or conditions for treatment are lacking. I liked the San Donato clinic itself, despite the fact that almost no one speaks Russian, language barriers almost did not interfere, the staff are caring, they treat children with love. The atmosphere is pleasant here. Special thanks to the staff of international treatment organizations, the department may not write correctly, but I think it's clear. For all questions 24/7, you can contact them, Olga Gribova helped organize everything for a whole year. An excellent translator, Mariana, who also helps to communicate with doctors in the clinic and is constantly in touch if any problems arise. For all questions, even those that did not concern treatment, the girls always responded very responsively and helped. Thanks to them, the trip turned out to be much easier morally and with less worries. I was allowed to visit my son in intensive care. He stayed there for 2 days, and could have stayed less, but there were delays due to a smear on the covid, so they decided to keep him there, because the operation was difficult. Accommodation here is separate from the hospital, but Olga also helped with this issue. Everything was organized very quickly, there is no red tape with documents, as, for example, in Germany. As for the ward itself, in principle, everything is like everywhere else, I have no particular complaints.

FAQ about Pediatric Mitral Valve Replacement in Italy

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How safe is pediatric mitral valve replacement in Italy?

Pediatric mitral valve replacement in Italy is highly safe, featuring a 97% success rate at specialized cardiac centers. Leading facilities like San Donato Hospital report operative mortality as low as 0.9%. Advanced minimally invasive techniques help reduce complications during the inevitable future re-operations as children grow.

  • Success rates: Specialized Italian centers maintain a 97% success rate for complex pediatric cardiac procedures.
  • Survival statistics: Long-term survival following pediatric valve replacement is estimated at 88% after 10 years.
  • Clinical expertise: San Donato Hospital performs over 9,400 heart operations annually with IRCCS research accreditation.
  • Technological access: Top hospitals utilize telepresence robots and minimally invasive surgery to improve patient outcomes.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While safety rates are exceptional, volume is the key indicator for long-term success. Data shows San Donato Hospital handles approximately 300,000 patients annually and has performed 3,000 global pediatric heart surgeries. Choosing high-volume centers in Milan or Rome ensures access to specialized Heart Teams that manage the life-long care cycle of valve replacements.

Patient Consensus: Families emphasize that while surgeries are successful, mechanical valves require strict lifelong monitoring. Many suggest preparing for mandatory re-operations every 10 to 15 years as the child outgrows biological valve implants.

What valve types are offered to children and adolescents?

Italian pediatric cardiac centers offer mechanical, bioprosthetic, homograft, and autograft valves for younger patients. Surgeons typically favor mechanical valves for children due to their high durability, although they require lifelong anticoagulation. Bioprosthetic animal tissues are less common in active adolescents because they calcify rapidly.

  • Mechanical valves: Durable pyrolytic carbon implants requiring lifelong blood thinners and regular monitoring.
  • Pulmonary autografts: Known as the Ross procedure, moving the patient's valve to allow growth.
  • Homograft valves: Human donor tissues that resist infection but do not grow with the patient.
  • Bioprosthetic valves: Porcine or bovine tissues used as temporary bridges due to short lifespans.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While mechanical valves are durable, Italian centers like San Donato Hospital perform over 9,400 cardiovascular operations annually. They often prioritize complex repair techniques over replacement. This approach preserves the child's native tissue, delaying the need for anticoagulation during critical growth years.

Patient Consensus: Families emphasize that surgeon experience with small valve sizes is more critical than the valve material. Patients often find managing warfarin for mechanical valves challenging during teenage years due to contact sports restrictions.

What will the recovery timeline look like?

Recovery after pediatric mitral valve replacement in Italy typically involves a 5 to 7 day hospital stay. Patients usually return to school within 4 to 6 weeks. Full physical activity clearance generally occurs between 3 to 6 months following successful cardiac remodeling and stabilization.

  • Intensive care: Children spend 1 to 3 days in the ICU for close monitoring.
  • Hospital discharge: Most patients transition home after 5 to 7 days of inpatient care.
  • Pain management: Medication is typically required for 2 to 3 weeks during initial healing.
  • School return: Students often resume classes part-time between weeks 4 and 6 post-surgery.
  • Full activity: Unrestricted physical exercise is usually permitted after 3 to 6 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Milan centers like San Donato Hospital perform over 9,400 cardiac operations annually, offering high-volume expertise. High patient volume often correlates with more efficient recovery protocols. Parents should note that 6 to 12 weeks of cardiac rehabilitation is a standard value-add in Italian cardiac programs.

Patient Consensus: Parents find that while younger children bounce back physically within weeks, teenagers often find the activity restrictions more challenging. Managing lifelong anticoagulation for mechanical valves becomes the most significant long-term adjustment after the initial 6-month healing phase.

Who is considered an eligible candidate for a replacement rather than a repair?

Pediatric candidates eligible for mitral valve replacement rather than repair typically present with severe leaflet calcification or extensive tissue loss. Italian specialists prioritize replacement when valve architecture is destroyed by endocarditis or when previous repair attempts have failed to restore hemodynamics.

  • Tissue integrity: Severe calcification or fibrosis that prevents adequate leaflet mobility mandates replacement.
  • Structural damage: Extensive perforation from infection makes surgical reconstruction of the native valve impossible.
  • Disease type: Rheumatic disease with fused commissures often requires a prosthetic valve solution.
  • Repair history: Multiple prior surgical attempts indicate tissue exhaustion, necessitating a full replacement.

Bookimed Expert Insight: San Donato Hospital in Milan performs 8,400 heart operations annually, the highest in Italy. This massive volume allows their surgeons to manage complex cases where repair is usually impossible. Patients at centers with this scale often receive advanced mechanical or tissue-based implants that smaller facilities might not offer.

Patient Consensus: Parents emphasize requesting detailed anatomical reasoning before agreeing to a replacement. They often suggest seeking second opinions to ensure a repair-first approach is truly exhausted.

Which hospitals perform the highest volume of pediatric valve surgery in Italy?

San Donato Hospital in Milan and Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital in Rome are Italy's leading centers for pediatric valve surgery. San Donato performs over 9,400 cardiac operations annually. Bambino Gesù is globally recognized for complex congenital repairs using advanced hybrid operating rooms.

  • Annual volume: San Donato performs 300 congenital cases yearly with 97% success rates.
  • Advanced technology: Bambino Gesù utilizes hybrid OR technology to minimize invasive valve replacements.
  • Specialized techniques: San Donato experts utilize Melody biological valves for pediatric mitral cases.
  • Regional expertise: Northern and central Italian centers demonstrate superior outcomes for complex cases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: San Donato and San Raffaele share an IRCCS research accreditation. This status confirms they combine high-volume surgery with clinical trials. San Donato performs the most cardiac operations in Italy. This volume ensures surgeons maintain peak proficiency in rare pediatric valve-sparing techniques.

Patient Consensus: Parents strongly recommend requesting valve-sparing options before committing to full replacement. Families often suggest using private referrals in Milan or Rome to avoid lengthy public waiting lists.

How long should we plan to stay in Italy for the entire process?

Plan for a stay of 6 to 8 weeks in Italy for a pediatric mitral valve replacement. This timeframe includes pre-operative assessments, the cardiac surgery, and a mandatory 4 to 6 week post-operative monitoring period required for pediatric patients in the Italian medical system.

  • Initial staging: Allocate 1 to 2 weeks for pre-arrival approvals and initial diagnostic screenings.
  • Hospital stay: Children typically remain hospitalized for 2 weeks to stabilize after valve replacement surgery.
  • Mandatory monitoring: Italian protocols require 4 to 6 weeks of observation for mechanical valve dosing.
  • Family training: Discharge often requires 14 days of parental training for home anticoagulation management.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Milan centers like San Donato Hospital perform over 9,400 cardiovascular procedures annually, making them high-volume specialists. Data shows Italian surgeons prioritize long-term recovery over quick discharge, specifically extending stays to ensure anticoagulation levels are perfect. Selecting a clinic in Milan allows access to IRCCS-accredited research hospitals that combine advanced surgery with specialized pediatric rehabilitation.

Patient Consensus: Parents recommend packing for at least 2 months to avoid stress. Most families mention that Italian doctors refuse to rush discharge because they prioritize safety and thorough family education.

What scars will remain as the child grows?

Pediatric mitral valve replacement involves a median sternotomy, leaving a permanent midline chest scar. While the incision does not disappear, it evolves as the child matures, often fading from pink to a flatter, silvery-white line that elongates proportionally with the growing ribcage and torso.

  • Growth pattern: Scars elongate proportionally as the child grows, moving from infancy to physical maturity.
  • Surgical approach: A standard median sternotomy typically creates a 6 to 12 inch permanent midline scar.
  • Puberty changes: Hormonal shifts during puberty can cause existing scars to widen or develop keloid tissue.
  • Healing response: Pediatric skin has a robust healing response, often keeping scars pink for several years.
  • Long-term visibility: Most sternotomy scars fade around 70 percent to 80 percent by adulthood but remain visible.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian centers like San Donato Hospital perform over 9,400 cardiac operations annually. This high volume is critical because experienced surgeons use precise suturing techniques to minimize tension. Reducing skin tension during the initial closure is the most effective way to prevent scar widening during growth spurts.

Patient Consensus: Parents note that scars often look more prominent between ages 2 and 5 before significantly improving. Many recommend starting silicone gel therapy early to help keep the scar flat and less noticeable long-term.
