Mexican hospitals generally include pre-op tests, general anesthesia, high-quality prosthetic implants, several days of hospital stay, medications, and initial follow-up in their packages. In the U.S., the listed price often covers only the surgeon’s fee, with separate charges for the implant, anesthesia, hospital stay, and physical therapy. Always confirm what each clinic’s package includes before booking.

Ankle joint replacement in Mexico: Pros and Cons

Ankle joint replacement in Mexico can offer significant cost savings, but it's crucial to weigh the potential benefits against the risks.

Pros Cons
Lower costs. Ankle joint replacement in Mexico typically costs $10,000–$15,000 versus $30,000+ in the US, offering savings of over 50%. Safety concerns. Potential risks include infection rates of 1–3% and rare complications such as blood clots. These risks are similar to those reported in US hospitals when performed by qualified orthopedic surgeons.
Qualified surgeons. Orthopedic surgeons are certified by the Mexican Council of Orthopedics and often have US or European fellowship training, with 10+ years of experience and hundreds of joint replacements performed. Follow-up care. Post-surgical care may be more challenging from abroad. However, clinics increasingly offer telemedicine and detailed discharge instructions to support international patients.
Modern facilities. Procedures are performed in hospitals accredited by COFEPRIS, with some holding JCI or ISO certifications and using prosthetics from leading brands like Zimmer and Stryker. Different regulatory standards. COFEPRIS oversees Mexican facilities, which may differ from FDA regulations. However, top clinics align with international safety protocols and use FDA-approved implants.
Restores mobility and reduces pain. When performed by qualified orthopedic surgeons, ankle replacement can significantly improve quality of life for patients with severe arthritis or injury. Travel and recovery logistics. Patients must stay in Mexico for at least 15 days post-op for safe recovery. This may complicate travel plans but ensures adequate medical supervision during the critical early phase.
Personal coordinator support. Bookimed’s medical coordinator helps compare clinics, request personalized quotes, and manage treatment logistics at no additional cost.

It's crucial to thoroughly research clinics and verify surgeon credentials before making a decision. Provided patients carefully research and choose reputable providers, ankle joint replacement in Mexico can offer quality care with substantial savings.

I was very pleased with her methods and knowledge and I plan to see her again if i need further treatment
Dr. Isabella Bernaschina was very interested in truly helping me. She was very efficient and she has considerable experience in the use of stem cells for many different conditions. She believes in what she is doing and has used stem cells herself in the past. She also lives a very healthy lifestyle and encourages a healthy lifestyle to gain the most benefit from treatment. She simply practices what she preaches and she has a long history using stem cells and other modalities to benefit the health of her patients. I was very pleased with her methods and knowledge and I plan to see her again if i need further treatment. I could not ask for more dedicated attention. She followed up after treatment to see how i was feeling and seemed to sincerely care about how I felt after treatment.

The surgeon and all the staff at the clinic have been incredibly supportive
My biggest concern was not fully understanding the extent of the damage. Fortunately, the results of the imaging tests were very detailed and cleared everything up. The surgeon and all the staff at the clinic have been incredibly supportive. The only issue is that the treatments required to preserve the joint before proceeding with replacement are very expensive. I am still in the early stages of recovery and the pain is much the same, which is to be expected at this stage. It is a process. I am confident about the road ahead.
