How Much Does Functional crown lengthening Cost in Mexico?

Functional crown lengthening in Mexico typically costs from $1,000 to $1,900. The final price depends on the number of teeth involved, the need for bone removal (osteotomy), and the specific technology used. In the US, patients usually pay $2,300 on average for this procedure. Mexico offers a country-to-country savings of approximately 39%. Common inclusions involve the local anesthesia, specialist consultation, and basic post-operative follow-up care.

  • Bone reshaping: Typically adds 20-30% to the cost if an osteotomy is required for crown fit.
  • Laser-assisted technique: Often starts around 15% higher than traditional methods due to specialized dental laser equipment.
  • Major medical hubs: Primary destinations for this surgery include Cancun, Mexico City, Los Algodones, and Tijuana.
  • Regional variations: Prices in Los Algodones may be 15-20% higher than in smaller regional Mexican cities.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing clinics in hubs like Playa del Carmen or Mexico City provides access to highly experienced specialists. For example, Bokanova Riviera Maya offers doctors with over 40 years of experience and PhD-level research backgrounds. Patients can find high-value care at clinics like YeahSmile, which is accredited by the ADA and ADM. These facilities often provide a 5-year guarantee on treatments while using premium brands like Straumann and Nobel Biocare.

Key Benefits
Functional crown lengthening in Mexico is a cost-effective dental procedure, with prices ranging from $140 to $150. This is significantly more affordable than in the US, where costs can exceed $1,000. The procedure is designed to expose more of the tooth structure for restorative purposes. Mexico is a popular destination for dental tourism, especially in cities like Tijuana and Cancun. Clinics in these areas often use advanced laser technology and adhere to ISO 9001 standards, ensuring high-quality care. It's important to choose reputable clinics to ensure a successful outcome.
Data verified by Bookimed as of September 2026, based on patient requests and official quotes from 55 clinics worldwide. Median costs are based on real invoices (2025–2026) and updated monthly. Actual prices may vary.

Factors affecting Functional crown lengthening cost in Mexico

Cost variables to consider:

  • Board-certified dentists with AACD or ADA memberships can charge 20% more, especially those trained in the US.
  • Clinics accredited by the Asociación Dental Mexicana or the ADA may charge 15%–20% more.
  • Treatment in border cities like Tijuana can cost up to 25% more than in other regions of Mexico.
  • Extent of tissue removal can impact cost by 20%–35%, especially for multiple teeth or complex cases.
  • Use of laser technology or piezoelectric surgery systems adds 10%–15% to the procedure price.
  • Type of anesthesia used, such as IV sedation, can increase costs by $120–$300 per session.

Functional crown lengthening in Mexico: Pros and Cons

Functional crown lengthening in Mexico can offer significant cost savings, but it's crucial to weigh the potential benefits against the risks.

Pros Cons
Lower costs. Functional crown lengthening in Mexico costs $140–$150 versus $1,000+ in the US, with savings of 85–90%. Safety concerns. Potential risks include infection (1–2%) and gum sensitivity, comparable to US rates when performed by qualified dentists.
Qualified dentists. Many providers are certified by the Mexican Council of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, often with US or European training and 10+ years’ experience. Follow-up care. Post-procedure visits may be challenging for international patients, but clinics often offer video consultations for follow-up checks.
Modern facilities. Clinics in Tijuana and Cancun use advanced laser technology and meet ISO 9001 standards for quality and safety. Different regulatory standards. COFEPRIS standards differ from the FDA. However, top clinics align with international protocols and quality certifications.
Efficient scheduling. Shorter wait times and flexible appointment options allow for faster access to treatment than in the US. Travel logistics. Patients must account for travel and accommodation arrangements, which can add complexity to care planning.
Personal coordinator support. Bookimed’s medical coordinator helps compare clinics, request personalized quotes, and manage treatment logistics at no additional cost.

It's crucial to thoroughly research clinics and verify surgeon credentials before making a decision. When performed by qualified specialists in reputable clinics, functional crown lengthening in Mexico can be a safe and affordable option.

I cannot recommend Jean more highly
RE: Bridge and Implants My extensive experience with dental treatment in the USA is simply unparalleled. Jenna, Alma, Roberto, and Alec together form such an efficient and responsive team. Throughout the entire time, I felt I was in safe hands, being well cared for. These kind individuals were willing to dedicate ample time to me and address all my questions. Even during the process, they were prepared to take the time to ensure I was satisfied with our decisions. I spent significantly less money on them than I would have on all my other expenses. They are true professionals, equipped with modern technology and genuinely caring for their patients. I cannot recommend Jean more highly.
Everything. I’ll add here that the office is a three minute walk from the hotel.
Don’t trust or rely on Hilton’s shuttle service.

This time we contacted the dental center of Mexico Dentavida to Dr. Alberto Guvera. We are very satisfied with the quality of work, the professionalism of Dr. Alberto. But in the case of my husband, a medical mistake was made in Turkish dentistry when installing crowns, which we will try to solve in the near future. Then we will share the results.

FAQ about Functional crown lengthening in Mexico

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Which type of dental specialist performs functional crown lengthening surgery in Mexico?

Functional crown lengthening in Mexico is primarily performed by periodontists. These specialists focus on gum and bone tissues. Some oral surgeons and prosthodontists with advanced surgical training also provide this treatment. They ensure enough tooth structure exists to support a permanent dental restoration.

  • Periodontists: Experts in gum tissue and bone recontouring for biologic width.
  • Oral surgeons: Skilled in complex bone removal and surgical tooth preparation.
  • Prosthodontists: Specialists like Dr. Rebeca Riera handle both functional surgery and crown placement.
  • Board certification: Top doctors hold Mexican Council of Periodontology (CMP) credentials.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that Mexico attracts patients by offering specialists with international training. Dr. Esteban Barragan at Bokanova Riviera Maya holds a PhD in bone regeneration from Spain. Dr. Mario Garibay at SoftDentalCare trained at Loma Linda University in the USA. This high level of academic training allows these doctors to manage complex surgeries involving both bone and soft tissue with precision.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that this surgery is a serious procedure involving bone reshaping and sutures. They emphasize that healing time is necessary before placing the final crown. Many were surprised that it is not a quick cosmetic trim but a vital step for long-term tooth health.

How can I find and book appointments with qualified crown lengthening doctors or periodontists in Mexico?

Finding qualified crown lengthening doctors in Mexico involves identifying specialists with advanced periodontology training and board certifications. Bookimed manages your doctor communication and scheduling at ADM-accredited clinics. You can book appointments with surgeons holding credentials from the Mexican Association of Periodontology to ensure surgical expertise.

  • Specialized board certification: Leading specialists like Dr. Genoveva Madrigal hold Mexican Council of Periodontology certification.
  • International training backgrounds: Top doctors often complete advanced postgraduate studies at Loma Linda University in USA.
  • Multi-disciplinary expertise: Dr. Esteban Barragan integrates PhD-level bone regeneration research into functional surgical procedures.
  • Accredited clinical settings: Qualified periodontists typically practice in facilities accredited by the Asociación Dental Mexicana.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that Mexico's top crown lengthening specialists often possess dual expertise. For example, Dr. Genoveva Madrigal at GNUX Dental is certified in both periodontics and orthodontics. This combination is vital for complex cases where gum reshaping must align perfectly with tooth movement and restorative goals.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that crown lengthening requires patience because healing must occur before final restorations are placed. Many were surprised to learn they needed the procedure to make a crown fit correctly. They emphasize choosing a periodontist who understands bone management rather than a general cosmetic dentist.

What kind of follow-up schedule should I expect with my doctor in Mexico after a crown lengthening procedure?

Patients should expect two primary follow-up visits in Mexico within the first six weeks. A certified periodontist like Dr. Genoveva Madrigal typically schedules the first checkup 7 to 14 days post-surgery. This visit focuses on suture removal and assessing early gum healing.

  • Initial checkup: Surgeons remove non-dissolvable stitches and verify tissue attachment after two weeks.
  • Healing stabilization: Most specialists require 4 to 6 weeks for the gumline to stabilize completely.
  • Prosthetic coordination: Specialists like Dr. Rebeca Riera ensure gums are ready before taking final impressions.
  • Remote monitoring: Many clinics offer photo-based tracking for international patients returning home early.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Coordination between surgical and restorative specialists is a key pattern in Mexico. At clinics like Bokanova Riviera Maya, Dr. Esteban Barragan uses his PhD research in bone regeneration to time follow-ups precisely. This ensures the bone and tissue are stable before a prosthodontist places the final crown, preventing future gum recession.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that recovery involves lingering tenderness rather than sharp pain. They describe the follow-up as a quick milestone check to confirm the area is healing well. Many were surprised that gums remain sensitive during routine cleanings for several weeks after the visit.
