Service provided was 1000/10
The staff at the hospital were all attentive to my needs and offered excellent service. Even though sometimes there was a communication barrier, they all provided me with the best treatment possible tending to all my needs. They were empathetic and sympathetic. I would recommend this hospital for any procedure you might need. The comfort level and cleanliness of the rooms was great. The fact that a family member could stay with you while you recover was indeed a nice touch as you need a familiar face during this time. Overall, my experience was superb and I would recommend hospital and doctor with his support staff. Service provided was 1000/10.

FAQ about Hormone therapy in Mexico

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is hormone replacement therapy legal in Mexico?

Hormone replacement therapy is fully legal in Mexico and regulated by the health agency COFEPRIS. It is widely accessible for menopause management, testosterone replacement, and gender-affirming care. While some hormones are available over-the-counter, testosterone strictly requires a valid medical prescription from a licensed physician.

  • Regulatory oversight: COFEPRIS monitors all hormone medications to ensure safety and quality standards.
  • Prescription laws: Testosterone is highly controlled, while some estrogens are accessible without prescriptions.
  • Specialized access: Leading centers in Cancun and Puerto Vallarta serve over 5,000 international patients annually.
  • Provider types: Treatment is legally provided by board-certified endocrinologists, gynecologists, and specialized fertility experts.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While legality is clear, the real differentiator in Mexico is the provider specialization. Clinics like Ginecologo Playa del Carmen serve 12,000 patients yearly, showing high trust in local gynecology. However, the $1,200 to $2,100 price range often includes more than just medication. Top-tier clinics bundle initial bloodwork and follow-up monitoring into their packages to ensure safety.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that while access is easier than in many countries, professional monitoring is vital. Most recommend skipping pharmacy self-sourcing in favor of clinics that provide detailed labs and dosage adjustments.

Is it safe to get hormone therapy or buy hormones in Mexico?

Hormone therapy in Mexico is safe when managed by board-certified endocrinologists at internationally accredited facilities. Safety depends on using verified pharmacy chains and avoiding unregulated over-the-counter sales. Patients must confirm all medications are sealed in original manufacturer packaging with visible lot numbers to ensure product integrity.

  • Provider verification: Ensure surgeons or endocrinologists hold Mexican Council of Endocrinology board certifications.
  • Pharmacy selection: Use major national chains like Farmacias del Ahorro to avoid counterfeit drugs.
  • Medication inspection: Verify sealed packaging, lot numbers, and matching formulations before purchasing any hormones.
  • Clinical oversight: Avoid self-treatment to prevent severe cardiovascular, liver, or kidney damage.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume clinics in medical hubs like Cancun or Puerto Vallarta often serve over 2,500 international patients annually. These established centers typically maintain higher safety standards because they rely on long-term global reputations. Booking through a facility with a high patient volume often ensures more reliable access to genuine medications.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that vetting the specific provider is more important than the location. They report that using well-known medical centers rather than independent shops is the best way to handle injectable hormones safely.

Can you buy hormone therapy medications over-the-counter in Mexico?

Many estrogen and progesterone medications are available without a prescription at major Mexican pharmacy chains. While technically regulated, enforcement varies significantly. Testosterone and human growth hormones remain strictly controlled substances. These always require a valid prescription from a licensed physician for legal purchase and border crossing.

  • Available medications: Estrogen gels, oral progesterone, and patches are commonly sold over-the-counter.
  • Restricted substances: Testosterone injections and anabolic steroids require a formal medical prescription.
  • Reputable chains: Buy from Farmacias del Ahorro or San Pablo to ensure drug purity.
  • Border rules: US Customs requires a valid prescription for any imported hormone medications.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients often save up to 85% compared to US costs for hormone therapy. While pharmacies in border towns are more permissive, professional clinics like Holistic Bio Spa provide medical supervision. This ensures you receive the correct dosages for your specific hormonal profile.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend using generic Spanish names instead of US brands when shopping. Many advise carrying a photo of your original prescription to avoid issues with law enforcement.

What are the rules for bringing Mexican hormone medications into the U.S. or UK?

Bringing Mexican hormone medications into the U.S. or UK requires a maximum 90-day supply and original pharmacy packaging. You must carry an English-translated doctor letter or prescription. Declaring all medications at customs is mandatory to avoid fines or confiscation of legally prescribed treatments.

  • Supply limits: Travelers may bring up to a 90-day or 3-month personal supply.
  • Packaging rules: Keep hormones in original pharmacy containers with your name and dosage.
  • Mandatory documentation: Carry a signed doctor letter stating the medication is for personal use.
  • Controlled substances: Testosterone requires a U.S. prescription or carries a 50-unit limit.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Mexican clinics like Holistic Bio Spa and Advanced Fertility Center serve thousands of international patients annually. While Mexico offers high-quality endocrinology, border officials prioritize the clinical source. Ensure your documentation identifies the specific clinic and prescribing doctor clearly. We notice that patients who keep their purchase receipts alongside the medical letter often experience much faster customs processing.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that injectable hormones receive the most scrutiny. They recommend keeping all vials, needles, and cooling packs in carry-on bags to ensure they remain safe and accessible for inspection.
