Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff
Attentive and caring staff, friendly and welcoming, very clean clinic. There was a significant difference between the base price, which was between €5,000 and €8,000, and the only additional examination, which was €150. To our surprise, we were asked to pay €9,750, which is a difference of €1,650. I wanted to have cataract surgery on my left eye and was given a quote of €5,610, which I found excessive given that I had already paid €9,750. Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff.
The kindness of all the medical staff
1-We couldn't find a cushion after a vitrectomy, even after searching all over Barcelona, so I suffered without a cushion for my neck. 2-Leaving without the medical report, promising to send it to us by email, which we still haven't received after 11 days.

"We have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr
We were examined in one of the clinics of this network - the Dexeus hospital. I am very grateful to the medical coordinators of Bookimed for their help in organizing the consultation there. We have a very complex ophthalmological problem that we have been trying to solve for many years. We traveled to different countries, consulted with very experienced doctors in the largest university clinics in Germany. But unfortunately, none of them had encountered similar situations before and could not prescribe us an effective treatment to solve the problem. And when we arrived at the Dexeus hospital, we were able to get a very highly qualified consultation, conduct serious examinations, and now we have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr. Verges, who turned out to be the first doctor who successfully treated previously such complex types of eye allergies as my son had. The clinic of this network pleasantly surprised us with the most modern approach to examinations, a high level of specialists and cutting-edge equipment. Absolutely not inferior to well-known German clinics. We will now recommend her to our friends and family.
About Bookimed service
Very pleased! Many thanks to the staff Vladimir, Ostap and Margarita. Thanks to them, our examinations were as efficient and comfortable as possible.

FAQ about Laser trabeculoplasty in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) and who is it for?

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a non-invasive, outpatient procedure using low-energy laser pulses to improve fluid drainage in the eye. It is for patients with open-angle glaucoma who want to reduce intraocular pressure, decrease dependency on eye drops, or manage medication side effects.

  • Treatment eligibility: Primary solution for open-angle or normal-tension glaucoma patients seeking medication alternatives.
  • Procedure profile: Fast 5–7 minute treatment using numbing drops instead of general anesthesia.
  • Clinical effectiveness: Reduces intraocular pressure by 20–30% in approximately 80% of treated patients.
  • Expected recovery: Outpatient return within 2 hours; mild blurred vision lasts 1–3 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While SLT is highly effective, it acts as a long-term management tool rather than a permanent cure. Data shows results typically last 2–5 years. Spain’s top specialists, like Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel who performs over 3,600 annual surgeries, often use SLT as a repeatable first-line therapy to delay more invasive surgical interventions.

Patient Consensus: Expect a brief procedure that feels like a series of bright flashes. Use non-preserved drops for a month before surgery and bring sunglasses for the initial light sensitivity.

Can I stop taking eye drops after SLT?

Most patients can reduce or eliminate glaucoma medications after Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) if intraocular pressure stays within target ranges. While approximately 75% of patients respond successfully, many require continued medication or repeat procedures within 2 to 5 years as the pressure-lowering effect gradually diminishes.

  • Medication reduction: Many patients transition to fewer daily drops or stop them entirely post-procedure.
  • Treatment longevity: Initial pressure-lowering effects typically last between 2 and 5 years before fading.
  • Repeatable procedure: Surgeons may repeat SLT up to 3 times to maintain stable ocular pressure.
  • Post-operative care: Short-term steroid or anti-inflammatory drops are required for 1 to 7 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain is a leading hub for SLT as a first-line therapy. Statistics show surgeons like Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel perform over 3,600 eye surgeries annually. Choosing a high-volume center in Madrid or Barcelona often ensures access to advanced 360-degree SLT technology. This approach provides more consistent results than traditional 180-degree treatments found elsewhere.

Patient Consensus: Success varies by individual, and some patients find their eye pressure rebounds after 6 to 12 months. Expect to continue monitoring pressure via regular check-ups even if you achieve drop-free status initially.

How long do the results of SLT last?

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) results typically last between 1 and 5 years. Many patients experience effective intraocular pressure reduction for 3 to 5 years. Results vary, but the procedure is repeatable since it causes no permanent scarring to the eye’s drainage tissue.

  • Success rates: Clinical data shows 62% effectiveness at 1 year and 24% by 4 year.
  • Repeatability: Non-thermal laser energy allows for safe re-treatment when the initial pressure-lowering effect fades.
  • Treatment area: Treating 180 degrees of the trabecular meshwork often yields better long-term pressure control.
  • Variable duration: Pressure may rise early for some, while others maintain stable levels for longer.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain ranks second globally in our network for ophthalmology, with centers like Hospital Ruber Internacional holding JCI accreditation and ISO 9001 standards. Data shows that high-volume surgeons, like those performing 3,600+ annual surgeries, provide more predictable outcomes. Selecting a specialist with international credentials from institutions like Harvard or the European Board of Urology ensures access to the latest laser protocols.

Patient Consensus: Patients are advised to consult their ophthalmologist or professional clinical literature for accurate individual projections. The longevity of intraocular pressure reduction varies significantly based on eye health and treatment response.

Is SLT covered by the Spanish Public Health System (Seguridad Social)?

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty is generally covered by the Spanish Public Health System for residents with active social security contributions. As a medically necessary glaucoma treatment, it is provided free at the point of delivery in public hospitals after a specialist referral from a doctor.

  • System access: Coverage requires residency and active contributions to the Spanish Social Security system.
  • Specialist referral: General practitioners must refer patients to ophthalmologists who authorize the procedure.
  • Financial cost: Publicly covered treatments are tax-funded, resulting in no direct patient costs.
  • Regional variations: Waiting times vary by autonomous community due to regional healthcare management.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish healthcare ranks second globally on Bookimed for eye care requests. While the public system covers SLT, high demand often results in significant waitlists. Patients frequently choose private centers like Centro Médico Teknon in Barcelona or Hospital Ruber Internacional for faster access. Private specialists like Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel perform over 3,600 eye surgeries annually, offering immediate availability for advanced laser trabeculoplasty.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that while public coverage is guaranteed, confirmed residency documents are essential. Many suggest contacting regional hospital departments directly to verify specific procedural timelines before starting the referral process.

Is the procedure painful?

Laser trabeculoplasty in Spain is generally not painful because surgeons apply numbing drops before the procedure. Most patients describe the sensation as mild taps or bursts rather than sharp pain. The procedure is a minimally invasive, outpatient laser treatment for glaucoma.

  • Anesthesia method: Surgeons use specialized numbing drops to ensure comfort during the laser application.
  • Typical sensations: Patients often feel mild pressure or taps from the laser bursts.
  • Contact lens discomfort: A specialized lens placed on the eye may cause a slight unpleasant feeling.
  • Recovery timeline: Most side effects like light sensitivity or headaches resolve within 1–4 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While the procedure is comfortable, pay attention to the morning-after pressure check. Specialists like Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel in Marbella perform thousands of eye surgeries annually. Their high volume helps them quickly detect rare post-operative pressure spikes that cause unexpected pain.

Patient Consensus: Many find the initial numbing drops the most uncomfortable part of the session. The reality is often a quick series of light sensations followed by transient dry eye feelings.

How long does the laser procedure take?

Laser trabeculoplasty in Spain is a rapid outpatient procedure where the actual laser application typically lasts only 3 minutes per eye. Patients should plan for a total clinical appointment time of 15 to 30 minutes to include diagnostic preparation, eye positioning, and a brief post-procedure pressure check.

  • Actual laser time: The active laser application usually concludes within 3 minutes of starting.
  • Total appointment length: Plan for 15 to 30 minutes for preparation and medical checks.
  • Hospital stay requirement: This is an outpatient procedure requiring zero overnight hospital stays.
  • Clinical setting: Advanced facilities like Centro Médico Teknon perform these in dedicated ophthalmology suites.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While the laser work is fast, choosing high-volume specialists like Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel, who performs over 3,600 eye surgeries annually, ensures precision during that critical 3-minute window. Expert surgeons in Spain often combine this speed with JCI-accredited safety standards to maintain consistently high success rates.

Patient Consensus: Patients often report surprise at how quickly the laser part finishes. Most advise that while the treatment is fast, vision may feel slightly different immediately afterward before settling.

How soon will I see results?

Patients typically observe a measurable decrease in eye pressure within 1 to 4 weeks following laser trabeculoplasty in Spain. While physical recovery from this outpatient procedure takes only 3 to 4 days, final pressure stabilization usually occurs between 6 weeks and 3 months post-laser.

  • Initial response time: Intraocular pressure typically begins dropping between 1 and 4 weeks.
  • Stabilization phase: Full clinical results generally stabilize between 6 weeks and 3 months.
  • Physical recovery: Most patients experience mild soreness or light sensitivity for 3-4 days.
  • Long-term duration: Reduced pressure benefits typically last for 3 to 5 years.
  • Critical follow-up: Surgeons require a 6-week assessment to confirm sustained pressure reduction.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain attracts many glaucoma patients because top-tier surgeons like Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel perform over 3,600 eye surgeries annually. Data shows consistent success at JCI-accredited centers such as Centro Médico Teknon or Hospital Ruber Internacional. While most see improvement, about 20% of patients might not experience a significant pressure drop after a single session.

Patient Consensus: You might notice a temporary pressure spike around week 3, which is often a normal healing sign. Most people find the physical recovery very quick, though vision may stay slightly blurred for a few days.
