How Much Does Metabolic surgery Cost in Spain?

Patients save approximately 47% compared to the US, where the average price is $28,500. Packages usually include preoperative tests, the surgical procedure, anesthesia fees, medications, and hospital stay.

  • Gastric bypass: $12,000 to $18,000 for the gold standard in diabetes remission.
  • Gastric sleeve: Typically costs 15-20% less than bypass procedures in most Spanish medical hubs.

I am very sorry that I did not seek advice earlier
I turned to Bookimed for help in selecting an endocrinologist for my 16-year-old son. The goal was to get a quality consultation of a European specialist during a New Year's tourist trip to Barcelona. Bookimed staff organized a meeting very quickly. TEKNON Clinic is one of the best in Europe. Therefore, I will not talk about the quality of reception, Everything is at the highest level. In the international department, a Russian-speaking girl manager met us, took us to a doctor, helped with the translation. There was no misunderstanding with the doctor. It is too early to talk about the quality of treatment. But the doctor explained that in Spain they do not use that (the only, according to our doctors) medicine that we took for 5 years (!), Because it only suppresses the hormone, and does not eliminate the root cause. He offered to cancel his appointment for 2 months, pass the necessary tests and forward it to him. After that, he will prescribe the necessary medicine. We also tentatively agreed on a future ON-LINE consultation. I am very sorry that I did not seek advice earlier. In addition, most doctors in Russia suggested removing the thyroid gland. But the doctor at Teknon assured that this was not necessary. Be sure to write a comment after a second consultation and on the results of treatment.

I evaluate the work of doctors for all 5 points and thank you very much for their responsiveness and individual approach, and most importantly - clarity in the diagnosis and the appointment of adequate treatment
Good day! I express gratitude to the clinic in the person of doctors and the department for working with foreign patients. Doctors are real professionals, support for foreigners is also at the highest level (starting with visa support and ending with sending an opinion upon completion of all procedures). But, there is one problem - it is not always possible to completely complete the examination due to the instability of the schedule. In our case, the doctor did not manage to meet with us and prescribe the prescribed examinations in our case because she went on vacation and we found out about it by chance. Thus, we had to return to our country of residence and after that we learned that it is necessary to pass the survey data, which means another trip. Analyzing our situation, I came to the conclusion that it was precisely the inability to change the schedule on the spot that was the reason that we did not finish the examination in one trip. This fact really upset me, but this does not mean in any way that the doctors are not qualified. I evaluate the work of doctors for all 5 points and thank you very much for their responsiveness and individual approach, and most importantly - clarity in the diagnosis and the appointment of adequate treatment.

FAQ about Metabolic surgery in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the qualifications/requirements for surgery?

Metabolic surgery in Spain requires a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 40 or a BMI over 35 with weight-related comorbidities like Type 2 diabetes. Patients must document 3–6 months of supervised weight loss attempts and pass mandatory psychological and nutritional evaluations before surgical approval.

  • Body Mass Index: Requirements start at BMI 35 with comorbidities or BMI 40 without them.
  • Clinical documentation: Patients must prove failure of lifestyle or medication management via medical records.
  • Mandatory evaluations: Candidates require clearance from a multidisciplinary team including psychologists and dietitians.
  • Surgeon credentials: Reputable Spanish surgeons, like those at Centro Médico Teknon, hold European medical degrees.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain attracts high-profile patients because top centers like Centro Médico Teknon treat celebrities and athletes. Surgeons here often have massive experience, such as Dr. Carlos Ballesta Lopez with over 12,000 procedures. This high volume typically correlates with lower complication rates and refined laparoscopic techniques.

Patient Consensus: Expect a 12–15 month timeline from initial inquiry to the actual surgery date. Patients emphasize that proving long-term weight stability and failed previous interventions is the hardest part of the process.

What are the common risks or adverse outcomes?

Metabolic surgery in Spain is highly safe when performed by experienced specialists in JCI-accredited facilities. Common risks include nutritional deficiencies, dumping syndrome, and gastrointestinal issues like acid reflux. Most adverse outcomes are preventable through strict adherence to lifelong dietary protocols and regular medical follow-ups.

  • Nutritional deficiency: Risks include anemia or osteoporosis requiring ongoing vitamin supplementation.
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms: Dumping syndrome may cause nausea, dizziness, or vomiting after eating.
  • Vascular safety: Venous thromboembolism is a standard surgical risk managed with anticoagulants.
  • Weight regain: Around 50% of patients may regain weight without lifestyle changes.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many overlook hospital stay duration, Spanish clinics like Centro Médico Teknon provide a 5-day inpatient period. This extended monitoring is crucial for detecting early complications like anastomotic leaks. Higher-tier packages often prioritize this safety window over quicker discharge times favored in other regions.

Patient Consensus: Patients often find managing dumping syndrome and severe reflux more challenging than the surgery itself. Success depends heavily on being fully educated and following dietary guidelines to avoid hospital visits for malnutrition.

What types of metabolic surgeries are available?

Available metabolic surgeries include Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG), Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y), and Single Anastomosis Duodenal-Sleeve with Intestinal Switch (SADI-S). Surgeons in Spain also perform Mini Gastric Bypass and Duodenal Switch to treat obesity and type 2 diabetes by altering digestive pathways and hormone levels.

  • Sleeve gastrectomy: Removes 75–80% of the stomach to limit food intake and hunger hormones.
  • Gastric bypass: Creates a small pouch connected directly to the lower small intestine.
  • SADI-S technique: Combines a sleeve gastrectomy with one intestinal connection to limit calorie absorption.
  • Revision surgery: Corrects or adjusts previous procedures to improve results or address complications.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain is a hub for the advanced SADI-S technique, which simplifies the traditional Duodenal Switch. Dr. Carlos Ballesta Lopez at Centro Médico Teknon has pioneered these laparoscopic methods through over 12,000 surgeries. This specific expertise often leads to shorter 5-day hospital stays compared to standard open procedures.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the necessity of lifelong vitamin supplements after malabsorptive procedures like SADI-S. Many also note a strict dietary progression from clear liquids to solids over several weeks for safety.

How long is the recovery time?

Metabolic surgery in Spain typically requires 5 to 7 days for initial recovery and 2 weeks for full recuperation. Surgeons use advanced laparoscopic techniques at JCI-accredited centers like Centro Médico Teknon to minimize tissue trauma, reducing post-operative pain and accelerating your return to daily activities.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 5 days of inpatient monitoring for safety and stabilization.
  • Work return: Most patients resume sedentary office duties within 5 to 7 days.
  • Physical activity: Avoid strenuous overexertion for 1 month to ensure internal healing.
  • Dietary transition: Liquid and soft meals are required for the first 2 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many international clinics offer 1-night stays, top Spanish hospitals like Centro Médico Teknon prioritize a 5-day inpatient window. This longer clinical observation period is a major differentiator. It allows surgeons like Carlos Ballesta Lopez, who has performed 12,000+ surgeries, to manage the peak discomfort period before discharge.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that the first 3 to 5 days are the most challenging for managing discomfort. Most feel significantly better by day 7 as gas pain fades and incisions begin to heal securely.

Which cities in Spain are best for metabolic surgery?

Barcelona and Madrid are the premier Spanish cities for metabolic surgery, offering internationally accredited centers like Centro Médico Teknon and Hospital Ruber Internacional. These hubs provide advanced robotic and laparoscopic gastric bypass options for treating Type 2 diabetes, typically costing $12,000 to $12,000.

  • Barcelona expertise: Features world-renowned centers like Centro Médico Teknon with Joint Commission International accreditation.
  • Madrid facilities: Home to Hospital Ruber Internacional, ranked among Spain top hospitals by Forbes.
  • Surgeon experience: Specialists like Dr. Carlos Ballesta Lopez have performed over 12,000 laparoscopic surgeries.
  • Inpatient care: Most metabolic procedures include a 5 day hospital stay for monitoring.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While basic surgery costs range from $12,000 to $18,000, highly specialized diabetes-focused packages at elite clinics like Centro Médico Teknon reach $28,400. This investment covers a pioneer surgeon with 12,000+ operations and an extensive 5-day hospitalization. For complex metabolic cases, choosing these high-volume surgeons often ensures superior glycemic control post-surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the comprehensive 2-year follow-up programs but caution others to discuss long-term acid reflux risks before choosing specific techniques. Many find Spain a reliable self-pay alternative within Europe, especially when they require immediate surgical intervention.
