"You are best !!!"
Good day to all! Finally we got our hands on writing about the treatment of our child at the Sant Joan de Deu Barselona hospital. I would like to say once again a huge thank you to Bookimed for the help in choosing a clinic. This is not just a hospital, THIS IS A SUPER HOSPITAL !!! To be honest, they did not even expect that medicine could be of such a high level. About the staff separately: from nurses to professors of the clinic, damn well, all simple, normal, kind people. I have never seen such attention to a child, literally everything is scheduled by the minute, everyone is smiling, joking. In general, the little one did not understand that he had undergone a complex operation on the spinal cord. After the operation and coming out of complex anesthesia, the child never even cried and did not experience any pain (except for changing the dressing, removing the adhesive plaster). The hospital itself is huge, EVERYTHING FOR CHILDREN, everything is in pictures, slides, balls, a dinosaur farm. Everything has been done so that the children would not be afraid of doctors, etc. And a special BIG THANKS to our neurosurgeon Jose Hinojosa Mena-Bernal with a capital letter. This is a man with golden hands and a kind heart (just works wonders)! The child began to walk on his own 5 days after the operation. Thanks to Mikki, the resuscitator, a young guy who looked after the little one after the operation, like his son. And also the hospital's translator, Mikhail, who, together with us, empathized with everything that happened, thanks to nurse Svetlana who helped in all matters related to caring for the little one, including as an interpreter, and just a good kind woman. Thanks to our curator of the hospital for organizing the stay in the clinic, cheerful, always cheerful with a smile on her face Valeria, deciding all issues of hospitalization and treatment. MANY THANKS TO ALL HONEY STAFF SANT JOAN DE DEU. You are best !!! CONTINUE SAVING THE CHILDREN AND MORE, and we, in turn, promise not to get sick anymore !! Respectfully, V.V. Solomatin

FAQ about Spina Bifida surgery in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

When is Spina Bifida surgery performed in Spain?

Spina Bifida surgery in Spain is performed either prenatally between gestation weeks 19 and 25 or postnatally within 24 to 48 hours of birth. Specialists at centers like SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital use fetal intervention to minimize nerve damage and improve long-term mobility outcomes.

  • Fetal surgery timing: Surgeons perform in-utero repairs strictly between the 19th and 25th week of pregnancy.
  • Postnatal repair window: If prenatal surgery is not feasible, specialists operate within 48 hours after delivery.
  • Gestation management: Mothers undergoing fetal surgery typically deliver via caesarean section at roughly 37 weeks.
  • Occulta surgery timing: For milder cases, specialized surgeons often schedule repairs around 6 to 8 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital manages 450,000 patients annually, making it a high-volume leader in Europe. Their neurosurgery head, Dr. Jose Hinojosa Mena-Bernal, has nearly 100 scientific publications and specializes in complex neuro-oncology and spina bifida. This deep academic and practical focus allows their team to handle both fetal and postnatal repairs with exceptional precision.

Patient Consensus: Parents report that highly specialized care in Barcelona allows children to begin walking independently as early as 5 days after postnatal surgery. Families emphasize the importance of immediate neurological monitoring to manage long-term shunt dependency.

What is the best hospital for Spina Bifida surgery in Spain?

SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital is widely considered the best facility for Spina Bifida surgery in Spain. This Newsweek-ranked special clinical center offers advanced fetal and pediatric neurosurgery. Led by Dr. Jose Hinojosa Mena-Bernal, the hospital provides comprehensive multidisciplinary care within a child-friendly environment.

  • Specialized fetal surgery: Surgeons perform prenatal corrections for Spina Bifida to improve long-term neurological outcomes.
  • Leading expert credentials: Dr. Jose Hinojosa Mena-Bernal serves as President of the Spanish Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery.
  • Rapid recovery protocols: Patients frequently achieve mobilization and begin walking as early as 5 days post-operation.
  • Premier hospital rankings: SJD Barcelona is ranked among the top world specialized clinics for pediatric care.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many JCI-accredited clinics like Teknon or Ruber Internacional offer adult neurosurgery, SJD Barcelona is unique because it manages 450,000 pediatric cases annually. Their high volume translates to specialized experience in complex spinal cord operations that general hospitals rarely match. For international families, the presence of a dinosaur farm and slides helps reduce patient anxiety during recovery.

Patient Consensus: Parents describe the care as world-class, noting that children often recover without significant pain or distress. Many highlight that finding a surgeon with dedicated Spina Bifida expertise is more important than the hospital brand itself.

What does fetal surgery for Spina Bifida in Spain involve?

Fetal surgery for Spina Bifida in Spain involves prenatal microsurgery to close the spinal defect while the fetus remains in the uterus. Performed between 19 and 26 weeks gestation, this intervention prevents further nerve damage from amniotic fluid and helps preserve essential motor functions.

  • Surgical techniques: Clinics offer open surgery or minimally invasive fetoscopic repair via small uterine incisions.
  • Clinical objective: Repairing the defect early reduces the need for brain shunts by approximately 60%.
  • Neurological benefits: Early closure can reverse Chiari malformations and improve future walking ability in children.
  • Medical team: Procedures involve fetal surgeons and neurosurgeons like Jose Hinojosa Mena-Bernal at SJD Barcelona.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While open surgery is common, choosing a center specializing in fetoscopic techniques is a game-changer for the mother. This approach often allows for a future vaginal delivery, whereas traditional open fetal surgery typically mandates a cesarean section for all subsequent births to prevent uterine rupture.

Patient Consensus: Parents describe the experience as overwhelming but note that Spanish children's hospitals prioritize a child-friendly atmosphere. They emphasize that kids often recover quickly, sometimes showing significant motor improvements like walking independently within days of postnatal follow-ups.

Can international patients access Spina Bifida treatment in Spain?

International patients access world-class Spina Bifida treatment in Spain through specialized pediatric centers and fetal surgery units. Top facilities in Barcelona and Madrid provide prenatal and postnatal neurosurgery. Expert surgeons like Jose Hinojosa Mena-Bernal utilize neuroendoscopy and minimally invasive techniques to improve pediatric mobility outcomes.

  • Available procedures: Specialists perform in-utero fetal surgery, neuroendoscopy, and complex postnatal neurosurgical repairs.
  • Leading facilities: JCI-accredited centers include SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital and Centro Médico Teknon.
  • Estimated costs: Surgery prices range from Price on request to Price on request for standard repairs.
  • Recovery timeline: Case reports show some pediatric patients begin walking independently within 5 days post-operation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain offers a unique legal advantage for families: children under 18 have full healthcare access regardless of residency status. While fetal surgery at top centers ranges from Price on request to Price on request , this is roughly _price_percent_discount_% less than US averages of _price_compare_US_average_.

Patient Consensus: Parents describe these hospitals as child-friendly environments that reduce surgical anxiety. They frequently highlight the `golden hands` of surgeons who achieve remarkably fast recovery milestones.
