"At the end, I wish to thank the Bookimed team for all the effort and the help I had for making the consultation happened successfully
The hospital is very modern in building and very organised since arrival you will have someone from the administration to assist in registration and then will take you to the clinic where your appointment is scheduled. Waiting time is reasonable, it is always expected to wait sometimes after your scheduled time to see the Doctor. In my case, I think I should have taken an appointment from first day to directly see the surgeon and not the endocrinologist. Do two days had been spent with the endocrinologist to repeat exactly the same procedure that I had completed in Bahrain, ie repeating the ultrasound which became in result exactly as a replica of the report done in Bahrain. One test was done new which was the anti thyroid plus vitamin D which I thought unnecessary. I do not know! . Any way after meeting again the endocrinologist with results of ultrasound and lab test results, she decided to refer me to the ENT surgeon who saw the ultrasound taken at Bumrungrad Hospital Nd my local hospital plus the biopsy reports and recommended operation to remove the the right thyroid node and if found being cancerous then again tho remove the left side node, A period of two weeks was advised for operation and follow up. I asked for an estimate then I was given a rough estimate for an operation which is probably three times the total cost of the operation in Bahrain, and their estimate did not cover pre operation procedure, not the admission cost , not the follow up visits changes neither the medicine. In conclusion, in my particular case I found my self to probably to be spending 8 times the cost if am going to do the same treatment I bahrain. At the end , I wish to thank the Bookimed treat for all the effort and the help I had for making the consultation happened successfully. From the bottom of my heart big THANKS to all and I wish you a good luck. Yours , Hameed Zuhair

Expert Overview about Thyroid disease Treatment in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the scarless thyroid surgery options in Thailand?

Thailand offers scarless thyroid surgery via Transoral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy Vestibular Approach (TOETVA). Surgeons access the thyroid through three small incisions inside the lower lip. This removes visible neck scars entirely. Patients benefit from high-definition visualization. This technology helps protect vocal nerves and parathyroid glands.

  • TOETVA approach: Small incisions are made inside the mouth between lip and gum.
  • Accessory techniques: Transaxillary and BABA methods hide scars in armpits or breast areas.
  • Robotic precision: Da Vinci systems allow 3D magnification for complex cancer resections.
  • Ablation options: Radiofrequency or microwave energy treats benign nodules without any surgical incisions.
  • Patient criteria: Ideal for thyroid nodules generally measuring under 6 to 10 centimeters.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai medical centers like Bangkok Hospital and Bumrungrad specialize in advanced endoscopic techniques. Some leading surgeons here have performed over 1,000 TOETVA procedures. This high volume often results in shorter operation times. Patients may only stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 nights. This efficiency makes Thailand a global destination for endocrine surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients note the relief of having no neck scar. Many emphasize that recovery involves temporary lip numbness. Most feel comfortable returning to normal activities within one week.

Can thyroid nodules be treated without surgery in Thailand?

Thailand offers several non-surgical treatments for thyroid nodules. Doctors use thermal ablation and ethanol injections to shrink nodules without incisions. These outpatient procedures preserve thyroid function and avoid visible neck scars. Most patients return to normal activities within one day.

  • Thermal ablation: Radiofrequency or microwave energy heat and destroy nodule tissue.
  • Ethanol injection: Doctors inject concentrated alcohol to dry out fluid-filled cysts.
  • Thyroid preservation: These methods target only the nodule. No lifelong medication is needed.
  • Outpatient care: Procedures use local anesthesia and require zero hospital nights.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai medical centers often specialize in specific ablation types. For example, Microwave Ablation is a primary focus at Police General Hospital. Radiofrequency Ablation is more common at larger private facilities. Choosing a clinic based on their specific technology ensures better results for your nodule type.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the scarless results and fast recovery times. Many emphasize that local anesthesia makes the process much more comfortable than traditional surgery. They recommend checking if your nodule is benign before choosing these options.

Will I need to take medication for the rest of my life after thyroid surgery?

Lifelong medication is mandatory after a total thyroidectomy. The body cannot produce essential metabolic hormones without the gland. Patients undergoing a partial thyroidectomy may avoid pills. Roughly 75% of those with half a thyroid produce sufficient hormones naturally. Individual needs depend on specific surgical outcomes.

  • Total thyroidectomy: Lifelong thyroid hormone replacement therapy is required daily.
  • Partial thyroidectomy: Approximately 25% of patients will eventually need hormone supplementation.
  • Hormone suppression: Cancer patients often take medication to prevent tumor recurrence.
  • Parathyroid care: Some require brief calcium or vitamin D support post-surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai clinics like Bumrungrad International Hospital utilize robotic techniques. These procedures minimize trauma to the parathyroid glands. This precision helps patients avoid temporary calcium supplements after surgery. Surgeons here often perform 500+ procedures annually. High surgical volume improves thyroid hormone stability during recovery.

Patient Consensus: Patients mention the daily pill becomes a simple habit. Many feel relieved that energy levels stabilize once the dosage is correct.

What is the recovery time for international patients after thyroid surgery in Thailand?

Patients should plan for a 7 to 14 day stay in Thailand. Most stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 nights. Surgeons typically issue fit-to-fly certificates 7 days after the procedure. Normal light activities usually resume within 3 to 7 days.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 1 to 2 nights for monitoring calcium and vocal function.
  • Initial recovery: Plan for 5 to 7 days in-country for follow-up and suture removal.
  • Activity limits: Avoid lifting over 10 pounds for at least 2 weeks post-surgery.
  • Flight clearance: Short-haul flights are safe after 7 days. Long-haul requires 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Scar maturation: Full healing and scar softening takes approximately 6 to 12 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai hospitals like Bumrungrad International often provide specialized fit-to-fly documentation. This is crucial for international insurance and airline safety protocols. Some specialized centers also offer endoscopic oral techniques. These methods may shorten the visible recovery period to just 5 days.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the need for soft foods during the first few days. They also highly recommend using high-SPF sunscreen. This prevents the tropical sun from darkening the neck incision during early healing.

Are there non-surgical treatments for hyperthyroidism available in Thailand?

Thailand offers advanced non-surgical thyroid treatments. Highly specialized centers provide radioactive iodine therapy. Minimally invasive heat-based procedures like radiofrequency ablation are also common. These methods treat overactive nodules without surgical incisions. Most patients recover quickly and avoid permanent scars.

  • Medication therapy: Doctors prescribe drugs like methimazole to block hormone production.
  • Radioactive iodine: A non-invasive capsule targets and shrinks overactive thyroid cells.
  • Radiofrequency ablation: High-frequency heat through a needle destroys toxic nodules safely.
  • Advanced procedures: Some centers offer microwave ablation or high-intensity focused ultrasound.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai hospitals like Bumrungrad and Bangkok Hospital lead in scar-free technologies. Our data shows a trend toward multidisciplinary care teams. These teams include nuclear medicine specialists and endocrinologists. This approach ensures hormone levels stabilize faster after non-surgical procedures. Focusing on centers with dedicated Nuclear Medicine departments improves outcomes.

Patient Consensus: Patients often mention how relieved they are to avoid neck scars. They frequently praise the speed of recovery after radiofrequency ablation procedures.
