How Much Does Heart and lungs transplant Cost in Istanbul?

Heart and lungs transplant in Istanbul typically costs from $155,000 to $220,000. The final price depends on the duration of intensive care, the surgical approach, and the complexity of preoperative donor matching. Patients save around 86% compared to the US, where this procedure costs $2,250,000 on average. Inclusions generally cover hospital stays, surgical fees, and immediate postoperative monitoring.

  • Heart transplant: $95,000 to $95,000 for isolated cardiac replacement.
  • ICU stay: Costs increase if recovery extends beyond the typical 21-day intensive care period.
  • Hospital accreditation: Facilities with JCI certification often charge 15-20% more for advanced infrastructure.
  • Mechanical support: Total costs rise significantly if a patient requires a ventricular assist device pre-surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Istanbul serves as Turkey's primary hub for complex organ transplants, concentrating the highest volume of JCI-accredited centers. This specialty depth allows clinics like Memorial Şişli to maintain a 90% organ transplant success rate. When planning, verify if specific assessments like HLA-typing are included, as these precision tests are vital for donor matching.

I can't recommend Aliser and the level of support we received enough - especially in such difficult circumstances
I highly recommend Florence Nightingale Hospital to anyone that is about to undergo a medical journey. For us, everything happened so suddenly. From the moment we uploaded files and made our request on Bookimed, Aliser as the International Coordinator was immediately on hand to support us - incredibly attentively and with compassion. He was supportive to our needs, and at a moment’s notice jumped onto WhatsApp calls to answer any questions and went above and beyond to give us the information we needed. We were navigating significant timezone issues (based in Hong Kong, whereas the patient, father-in-law, was in Albania) but we didn’t feel this burden. We had lots of specific needs that were met, including jumping onto a Video call with Professor Yildiray Yuzer, to answer questions directly. We weren’t the easiest of patients with lots of reassurance needed, but Aliser was helpful in being able to put himself in the position of the patient and being on our side to help us. We were incredibly satisfied by the level of support that we received - especially in comparison to other hospitals in Istanbul. I can’t recommend Aliser and the level of support we received enough - especially in such difficult circumstances. Once we arrived in Istanbul we appreciated being met with a transfer, and recommendations were made for accommodation to ensure that we were comfortable. Throughout our consultations, we most definitely felt that the Florence team was earnest - putting patient health first, above profit, which we appreciated. During the hospital stay itself, we were also blown away by the compassion of the nurses and support staff in our ward. Something that was so challenging, was punctuated throughout with so many moments of warmth and support. In addition, the facilities, hospital rooms, and cleanliness and hygiene at Florence were fantastic, we couldn’t have wished for a better stay. Most importantly, we were reassured by the experience and expertise of Professor Yuzer and his team. Any patient can trust that they are in expert hands. It’s also helpful to see that these skills are supported by a genuine empathy for the patient. Ultimately, the procedure was a success (we hope that positive health outcome continues!). It feels surreal having embarked on the journey, however, I’m incredibly satisfied with the service, support and expertise of the hospital. There’s nothing I can think of to improve!
About Bookimed service
The bookimed team, in addition to Florence, were incredibly supportive and compassionate particularly in the first weeks as we sought to navigate options and make decisions. The customer support team regularly checked in on our progress via whatsapp, and you could see that they had medical backgrounds and were incredibly competent. It felt fantastic to have their support - bookimed is an incredible platform.

The team was very professional and understanding
So far we only had an initial consultation. Even though we haven’t received the answers we hoped for, we can only say good things about the team participating in the consultation. The team was very professional and understanding. They listened to our questions and patiently answered them all.

FAQ about treatment in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Which hospitals in Istanbul are recognized for advanced organ transplants?

Istanbul hospitals such as Memorial Bahcelievler and Biruni University Hospital are known for complex organ transplants. They use robotic-assisted surgery and multidisciplinary teams to perform heart, lung, kidney, and liver procedures for adults and children.

  • Specialized surgeons: Experts like Dr. Ertan Emek perform heart and lung transplants in TEMOS-accredited facilities.
  • Advanced technology: Facilities feature da Vinci XI robotic systems and AI-supported 3 Tesla MRI units.
  • Success benchmarks: Centers report high graft survival rates for pediatric transplants under 5 kg.
  • Global savings: Procedures cost $155,000 to $220,000, saving about 86% versus the US.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While clinics may advertise transplant services, focus on centers like Biruni University Hospital that hold TEMOS accreditation. TEMOS accreditation confirms the hospital meets international standards for medical tourism. It also confirms the infrastructure can handle the intensive post-operative monitoring heart and lung recipients need.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend looking beyond hospital brands to check the specific surgical team's transplant volume. Successful outcomes often come from clear staff communication and strong ICU backup capacity to manage potential complications.

What are the success and survival rates for heart and lung transplants in Istanbul?

Heart transplant first-year survival in Istanbul is up to 92%, while lung transplant rates range from 61% to 70%. These outcomes meet international benchmarks. High-volume centers like Memorial Göztepe Hospital use hybrid operating rooms to maintain these standards.

  • Heart survival: Leading Istanbul centers report 85% to 92% one-year adult survival rates.
  • Long-term heart: Five-year survival rates typically range between 70% and 75% in Turkey.
  • Lung survival: Major thoracic centers achieve one-year survival rates between 61% and 70%.
  • Long-term lung: Five-year survival scales from 42% to 68% based on patient stability.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patient volume is the most reliable indicator of success for these complex procedures. While general surgery clinics exist, centers with multidisciplinary tumor boards and specialist surgeons like Dr. Ertan Emek at Biruni University Hospital offer higher safety margins. Hospitals that do more procedures each year often report better long-term functional recovery.

Patient Consensus: Patients often find that the first year is the most critical hurdle. Survivors often report returning to near-normal activity levels and enjoying a high quality of life within nine months.

Can international patients easily access transplant waiting lists in Istanbul?

International patients cannot join deceased donor waiting lists in Istanbul. Turkish law limits these lists to citizens and residents. This keeps the system ethically self-sufficient. Non-residents must bring their own living donor, usually a blood relative or spouse. They also must pass a rigorous ethics committee review.

  • Living donor rule: International patients must arrive with a compatible relative or spouse for solid organ transplants.
  • Kinship restrictions: Donors must be blood relatives up to the fourth degree to undergo legal evaluation.
  • Ethics committee: All international cases require mandatory government review. The goal is to prevent illegal commercial organ transactions.
  • Registry priority: The Turkish Ministry of Health prioritizes local residents for all deceased donor organ allocations.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Solid organ lists are closed, but Istanbul is still a global hub for specialists like Dr. Ertan Emek at Biruni University Hospital. Our data shows that leading centers focus on living donor transplants. Clinics use multidisciplinary tumor boards and detailed imaging like 512-slice CT. This helps keep donors safe and drives high success rates.

Patient Consensus: Patients stress that Turkey’s system is strictly regulated. It is not a shortcut. Successful cases involve heavy documentation and formal referrals. Patients also warn that any promise of easy waiting-list access is a major red flag.

How long is the overall recovery and stay required for a heart and lung transplant in Istanbul?

Heart and lung transplant recovery in Istanbul usually starts with 2 to 4 weeks in the hospital, then a 3-month stay nearby. Specialized centers like Biruni University Hospital use intensive monitoring. This helps manage complex rehabilitation and stabilize immunosuppressive drug therapy for international patients.

  • Intensive care: Initial stabilization and weaning from mechanical ventilation usually take 3 to 7 days.
  • Hospital recovery: Patients spend 10 to 21 days on transplant floors for pulmonary rehabilitation.
  • Local monitoring: A 2 to 3-month stay near the hospital is mandatory for frequent check-ups.
  • Full rehabilitation: Getting back to normal daily activities typically takes 6 to 12 months of recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: The average hospital stay is about 3 weeks. Combined heart-lung cases, however, often face longer ICU timelines than single-organ transplants. At facilities like Biruni University Hospital, surgeons such as Dr. Ertan Emek manage these complex cases using TEMOS-accredited protocols to lower rejection risks before travel.

Patient Consensus: Patients stress that early mobility — often sitting up within 2 days — is vital. Most recommend planning for 3 months of home isolation after discharge because immunosuppression needs are high.
