I can't recommend Aliser and the level of support we received enough - especially in such difficult circumstances
I highly recommend Florence Nightingale Hospital to anyone that is about to undergo a medical journey. For us, everything happened so suddenly. From the moment we uploaded files and made our request on Bookimed, Aliser as the International Coordinator was immediately on hand to support us - incredibly attentively and with compassion. He was supportive to our needs, and at a moment’s notice jumped onto WhatsApp calls to answer any questions and went above and beyond to give us the information we needed. We were navigating significant timezone issues (based in Hong Kong, whereas the patient, father-in-law, was in Albania) but we didn’t feel this burden. We had lots of specific needs that were met, including jumping onto a Video call with Professor Yildiray Yuzer, to answer questions directly. We weren’t the easiest of patients with lots of reassurance needed, but Aliser was helpful in being able to put himself in the position of the patient and being on our side to help us. We were incredibly satisfied by the level of support that we received - especially in comparison to other hospitals in Istanbul. I can’t recommend Aliser and the level of support we received enough - especially in such difficult circumstances. Once we arrived in Istanbul we appreciated being met with a transfer, and recommendations were made for accommodation to ensure that we were comfortable. Throughout our consultations, we most definitely felt that the Florence team was earnest - putting patient health first, above profit, which we appreciated. During the hospital stay itself, we were also blown away by the compassion of the nurses and support staff in our ward. Something that was so challenging, was punctuated throughout with so many moments of warmth and support. In addition, the facilities, hospital rooms, and cleanliness and hygiene at Florence were fantastic, we couldn’t have wished for a better stay. Most importantly, we were reassured by the experience and expertise of Professor Yuzer and his team. Any patient can trust that they are in expert hands. It’s also helpful to see that these skills are supported by a genuine empathy for the patient. Ultimately, the procedure was a success (we hope that positive health outcome continues!). It feels surreal having embarked on the journey, however, I’m incredibly satisfied with the service, support and expertise of the hospital. There’s nothing I can think of to improve!
About Bookimed service
The bookimed team, in addition to Florence, were incredibly supportive and compassionate particularly in the first weeks as we sought to navigate options and make decisions. The customer support team regularly checked in on our progress via whatsapp, and you could see that they had medical backgrounds and were incredibly competent. It felt fantastic to have their support - bookimed is an incredible platform.

So far we only had an initial consultation. Even though we haven’t received the answers we hoped for, we can only say good things about the team participating in the consultation. The team was very professional and understanding. They listened to our questions and patiently answered them all.

FAQ about Transplantology in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the verified success rates for kidney and liver transplants performed in Turkey?

Verified kidney and liver transplant success rates in Turkey reach 94% and 90% respectively at top-tier centers. These outcomes match global standards due to high volumes and clinical expertise. Leading JCI-accredited facilities often report one-year graft survival rates between 95% and 99% for living-donor procedures.

  • Kidney survival: Living-donor kidney transplants show a 96% one-year graft survival rate nationwide.
  • Liver success: Top hospitals report 90% or higher one-year survival for early-stage liver transplants.
  • Expert volume: Dr. Alp Gürkan at Istanbul Okan University Hospital has performed 1,900+ kidney transplants.
  • Clinical capacity: Memorial Şişli Hospital maintains a verified 90% success rate for organ transplantation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Success rates are highest at `high-volume` centers like Medipol Mega University Hospital, which serves 1,000,000 patients annually. Our data shows that centers with 10+ years of experience, such as Memorial Şişli, often provide better long-term monitoring. These established hospitals typically have 10 or more specialized departments to handle post-op recovery.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that choosing a JCI-accredited hospital is vital for safety and care quality. They emphasize planning for a 3–6 month stay after surgery to ensure proper medical follow-up.

What are the legal donation rules for international patients seeking organ transplants in Turkey?

International patients in Turkey are legally limited to living donor transplants from relatives up to the fourth degree. Foreigners cannot access the national cadaveric waiting list or receive organs from deceased Turkish citizens. Donors must be at least 18 years old, mentally competent, and provide voluntary consent.

  • Kinship level: Donors must be family members up to the fourth degree of kinship.
  • Document verification: Relationship proof requires certified translations and an Apostille on all official certificates.
  • Ethics committee: Non-related donors must pass a rigorous state committee audit to verify motives.
  • Professional certification: Hospitals must hold an International Health Tourism certificate to treat foreign patients.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from 1,000,000 annual patients at Medipol Mega University Hospital points to a clear trend: volume drives success. Large centers often maintain a 90% transplant success rate because they perform thousands of procedures, which streamlines the 2–4 week legal approval process for international families.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that authorities strictly verify family ties using DNA testing. One patient noted that even cousins or aunts are frequently rejected, appearing to favor only the closest immediate relatives for approval.

How long should an international transplant patient expect to stay in Turkey post-surgery?

International transplant patients in Turkey generally stay 2 to 4 weeks for kidney transplants and up to 3 months for liver procedures. These timelines include hospital monitoring and outpatient recovery. JCI-accredited centers in Istanbul and Ankara ensure patient safety through rigorous post-operative follow-up protocols.

  • Liver transplant: Patients stay 15–21 days in-hospital and 2–3 months total in Turkey.
  • Kidney transplant: Recipients require 7–15 hospital days and 2–4 weeks total stay.
  • Living donors: Kidney donors typically discharge in 3 days and fly within 15 days.
  • Corneal transplant: This outpatient or short-stay procedure often requires only 3–7 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from top-tier facilities like Memorial Şişli Hospital, which maintains a 90% organ transplant success rate, shows a trend toward early mobilization. High-volume centers often use laparoscopic techniques for living donors. This approach typically reduces the donor hospital stay to just 1–3 days. Patients should choose clinics with on-site laboratory capacity to speed up mandatory weekly bloodwork.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize staying in clinic-affiliated lodging to simplify travel for frequent check-ups. Many suggest booking flexible return flights because surgeons may extend the monitoring period based on individual recovery speed.

What legal health and age checks must the living donor meet before donation?

Living donors in Turkey must be at least 18 years old and physically healthy. Legal standards require deep medical screenings and voluntary consent. Centers like Memorial Şişli Hospital report a 90% success rate. Donors must be free of chronic illnesses like diabetes or active cancer.

  • Age limit: Donors must be 18+, with some clinical flexibility for healthy donors over 65.
  • Health screening: Extensive checks include HLA-typing and DNA testing to ensure tissue and blood compatibility.
  • Medical excludes: Uncontrolled hypertension, active infections, or a high BMI typically disqualify potential donors.
  • Legal requirement: Turkish law mandates informed consent and an evaluation by a second independent doctor.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish clinics focus heavily on anatomical compatibility for complex cases. For example, Dr. Ayhan Dinçkan has performed 5,000+ kidney transplants. High-volume centers often use advanced imaging like CT angiography to map blood vessels. This precision allows for successful simultaneous multi-organ transplants that many smaller facilities cannot handle.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that infectious disease testing for HIV and Hepatitis is extremely strict. While medical checks are rigorous, some find the psychological evaluation less intensive than in Western countries.

How can medical tourists verify that a Turkish transplant center or hair-restoration clinic is both legal and internationally credentialed?

Verify Turkish transplant centers by confirming their International Health Tourism Authorization Certificate from the Ministry of Health. Patients should also validate Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation to ensure global safety. These credentials confirm the facility meets strict legal and medical standards for international patients.

  • Government authorization: Check for the official International Health Tourism Authorization Certificate number.
  • Global accreditation: Priority centers like Memorial Şişli Hospital hold Joint Commission International (JCI) status.
  • Surgeon certification: Ensure doctors belong to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS).
  • Agency licensing: Confirm the clinic or its partner holds a TÜRSAB tourism license.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that centers with JCI accreditation, such as Medipol Mega University Hospital, often manage much higher patient volumes. This clinic serves over 1,000,000 patients annually. High-volume centers typically invest in advanced technologies like the Da Vinci Surgical System. This level of infrastructure usually indicates a more stable and legally compliant environment for complex procedures.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it's important to request video consultations with the actual surgeon before traveling. They emphasize that while many clinics are legal, only some provide direct access to lead professors like Dr. Kamil Yalcin Polat for detailed planning.
