How Much Does ApiFix system implantation Cost in Turkey?

ApiFix system implantation in Turkey typically costs from $13,000 to $19,000. The final price depends on the clinic tier, city, and the surgeon's experience with scoliosis correction. Patients save approximately 75% compared to the US, where the average cost is $65,000. Packages usually include the implant, surgery, several hospital nights, and airport transfers.

  • Hospital stay duration: Standard packages often include five nights of hospitalization and three nights in a hotel.
  • Specialized surgical tools: Use of 3D imaging or neuronavigation may add 10-15% to the procedure cost.
  • City location: Prices in Istanbul or Ankara typically run higher than in smaller regional medical hubs.
  • Surgeon seniority: Professors with over 30 years of experience often charge a premium for complex cases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a comprehensive package provides the best value-to-cost ratio for international patients. For example, Adatip International Hospital offers a package for approximately $15,000. This includes surgery by Dr. Orkun Koban and eight total nights of accommodation. Selecting JCI-accredited facilities like Memorial Şişli ensures high safety standards while maintaining the significant savings found in Turkey's medical market.

Doctors at the highest level
PLUSES Doctors at the highest level...professionalism, attention, responsibility felt during the whole stay...nothing unnecessary was said...no promises were made that could not be realised later...we were very satisfied with the results of their work.... Medical equipment may not be the latest models, but the penultimate certainly ... The food is very tasty... The facilities in the ward create a comfortable stay... The location of the clinic is good... Many hotels of different categories within walking distance..... MINUSES The medical staff and service staff (cleaning of the ward) wish to be better...the clinic needs a little more review of the process of care of medical staff for patients...at night when the patient before surgery or after surgery should gain strength and rest, begins frequent going to the room...then the temperature to measure, then the pressure, then remembering about the drip to connect the next or remove the forgotten.... Another disadvantage is the proposal-proform with an indication of what services are included in the paid amount, and which are not ... I would like a more specific list...taking into account that the treatment plan has changed, the amount to be paid has also changed, and there is always a question whether it is paid or whether it is necessary to pay additionally...which causes inconvenience and worries "whether you have enough money".... The general impression of the clinic was good...despite the disadvantages.....
Professionalism of the medical team

"The result of the surgery is excellent
The clinic is very large, the conditions in the room were very good, there was even a folding chair for an attendant. Food was brought for both of us. The doctor aroused confidence from the very first consultation. But also a whole team was engaged in my operation and they are all great professionals. Nurses have also always been very helpful.

FAQ about ApiFix system implantation in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Who is a candidate for the ApiFix procedure?

The ideal candidate for the ApiFix procedure is an adolescent aged 10 to 17 diagnosed with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis. They must have a flexible, single major curve between 35 and 60 degrees. This system serves as a motion-preserving alternative to traditional spinal fusion surgery.

  • Curve type: Must be a Lenke 1 or Lenke 5 thoracic or thoracolumbar curve.
  • Flexibility: The spinal curve must reduce to 30 degrees or less during side-bending tests.
  • Bone quality: Patients require a T-score above -1.5 to ensure the implant remains secure.
  • Skeletal growth: Most effective for growing children, specifically those at Risser stage 0 to 2.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While global guidelines suggest curves up to 60 degrees, clinics like Memorial Şişli Hospital and Lokman Hekim identify the 45-to-55 degree range as the success sweet spot. Surgeons like Dr. Orkun Koban prioritize patients who have failed external bracing but still retain significant spinal mobility.

Patient Consensus: Families often choose this over fusion to keep the spine moving, though many emphasize the importance of early intervention before curves exceed 60 degrees. Patients typically value the shorter 5-day hospital stays compared to traditional open surgeries.

What are the potential risks or complications of ApiFix?

ApiFix system implantation carries risks including implant displacement, mechanical failure of the ratchet mechanism, and potential revision surgery. While less invasive than fusion, complications like screw loosening, localized bone loss, or curve progression may require converting the treatment to traditional spinal fusion.

  • Mechanical failure: The dynamic rod or screws can break, loosen, or migrate over time.
  • Revision surgery: Between 12% and 18% of patients may require a secondary corrective procedure.
  • Activity restrictions: Patients must avoid high-impact sports like gymnastics or rowing to protect hardware.
  • Biological risks: Potential for surgical site infections or metal debris accumulation in surrounding tissue.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from top Turkish centers like Lokman Hekim shows a trend toward combining ApiFix with specific bone density screenings. Surgeons like Dr. Orkun Koban emphasize these pre-op checks because most reported implant migrations occur when underlying bone quality is insufficient to support the device tension.

Patient Consensus: Patients often report persistent discomfort or a shifting sensation months after surgery. Many emphasize the importance of budgeting for potential return travel if follow-up imaging reveals the hardware has loosened.

How does ApiFix differ from traditional spinal fusion?

ApiFix is a motion-preserving treatment for scoliosis that uses a single self-adjusting rod to act as an internal brace. Unlike traditional spinal fusion, which permanently joins vertebrae into a rigid bone mass, the ApiFix system allows for continued spinal growth and natural flexibility post-surgery.

  • Surgical approach: Mid-range procedures take 2–3 hours using smaller incisions compared to longer fusion surgeries.
  • Anchor points: Surgeons typically use only 3 screws, whereas traditional fusion often requires 10 or more.
  • Mobility preservation: Polyaxial joints in the rod maintain spinal motion instead of locking the spine rigid.
  • System reversibility: Rods are often removed after 1–2 years once the spinal correction has stabilized.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While traditional fusion is permanent, the ApiFix system is designed as a temporary growth-friendly internal brace. Data shows clinics like Adatip International Hospital offer packages including 5-day hospital stays, which is longer than the US average. This extra time allows surgeons to monitor the early stages of the correction mechanism before discharge.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the significantly faster recovery timeline of weeks rather than months. Many suggest budgeting for follow-up travel as the rod correction often requires monitoring by specialists familiar with the device.

What is the recovery timeline after ApiFix surgery?

Most patients achieve full recovery from ApiFix surgery within 3 to 6 months. This minimally invasive, fusionless procedure allows for significantly faster healing than traditional spinal fusion. Patients typically return to school or light desk work within 2 to 4 weeks while maintaining spinal mobility.

  • Hospital stay: Expect discharge within 2 to 5 days after the procedure.
  • Immediate movement: Surgeons encourage walking within 24 hours to prevent muscle stiffness.
  • Brace compliance: Patients often wear a brace for 23 hours daily for several weeks.
  • Sporting activities: Low-impact exercise begins at 6 weeks with full sports by 6 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While recovery is fast, Turkish clinics like Adatip International Hospital often include longer 5-day inpatient stays compared to US averages. This extended monitoring by specialists like Dr. Orkun Koban ensures the ratchet mechanism is elongating correctly before the patient begins international travel home.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report an immediate confidence boost, noting they gained up to 2 inches in height shortly after the correction. Success relies heavily on following the strict bracing schedule and physical therapy during the first 3 months.

Which clinics and doctors in Turkey specialize in the ApiFix procedure?

Turkey offers advanced ApiFix system implantation through a network of JCI-accredited hospitals in Istanbul, Ankara, and Antalya. Specialized surgeons like Dr. Orkun Koban at Adatip International Hospital and Prof. Mehmet Aydogan at Memorial Şişli provide this minimally invasive, non-fusion alternative for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

  • Specialized clinics: Memorial Şişli, Adatip International, and Medipol Mega University Hospital provide dedicated spine centers.
  • Expert surgeons: Dr. Orkun Koban and Prof. Erkan Kaptanoglu specialize in scoliosis and endoscopic surgery.
  • Advanced infrastructure: Facilities like Lokman Hekim utilize helipads and extensive ICU beds for complex cases.
  • Accreditation standards: Top-tier centers maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) and ISO certifications for patient safety.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics offer scoliosis surgery, only a few like Adatip International Hospital bundle the ApiFix system into fixed-price packages. These $15,000 packages typically include 5 days of hospitalization, which is longer than standard fusion stays, reflecting the specialized monitoring required for self-adjusting rods.

Patient Consensus: Success depends on verifying that your specific diagnosis fits ApiFix criteria rather than traditional fusion. Patients emphasize choosing surgeons who provide clear before-and-after imaging and a long-term plan for international follow-up care.
