How Much Does Cataract surgery (both eyes) Cost in Turkey?

Cataract surgery (both eyes) in Turkey typically costs from $1,300 to $2,400. The total price depends on the chosen intraocular lens type, such as monofocal or trifocal, and the surgeon's expertise. Patients save around 80% compared to the US, where the average cost is $9,500. Standard packages in Istanbul and Antalya often include preoperative biometry, surgeon fees, luxury hotel stays, and VIP transfers.

  • Monofocal lenses: Typically the most affordable option for correcting distance vision.
  • Trifocal or "smart" lenses: Designed to provide clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances.
  • EDOF lenses: These enhanced depth of focus lenses offer a seamless range of high-quality vision.
  • Laser-assisted surgery: Using femtosecond laser technology typically adds 20-30% to the base surgical cost.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a high-volume center like Dunyagoz, which treats 66,000 patients annually, ensures massive surgical experience. Many Turkish clinics offer superior value by bundling premium Alcon or Zeiss lenses into all-inclusive packages. For example, some packages priced around $4,750 include 5-star accommodation and VIP transport. This allows patients to access top-tier technology and JCI-accredited safety without the typical Western price tags.

It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided
It was a very good experience for us, and I will use this service in the future if necessary. All the answers to my questions were given. Everything is very organized. They have their own counter at the airport, where they arranged a transfer for us and brought us comfortably to the hotel. We were accompanied everywhere. The price of the service was as agreed in advance. There were no additional payments. I only spent money on my husband's eye drops at the pharmacy, but they're sold at affordable prices. The hospital is very modern, it's a large complex, there's a university nearby. The hospital has a special department for dealing with foreign clients. We didn't run, we weren't looking for anything, Mustafa was with us all the time and made arrangements for everything himself. There were a few days between the diagnosis and surgery, and we managed to book several tours of Istanbul. It helped us relieve the tension of worrying about the surgery. My husband has an agimatism, he got the best lenses in the world that exist right now. These lenses were made specifically for the parameters of his eye. It's been less than a week since the surgery, but my husband says he can see some things even better than he had with glasses before. The rehabilitation is not over yet, he has to drip eye drops on schedule for a month, take care of eyes, and don't lift heavy things and rub eyes. The doctors have done their job, now a lot depends on how clearly my husband adheres to the doctor's recommendations. It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided.

Thank you very much and I will recommend this clinic to everyone I know
I was very satisfied with the result of my treatment at the clinic. Everything was done well, starting with the pick-up from the airport, the escort and the very polite attitude towards me. Any of my needs were well met, the translation was clear and the communication with the doctor was very informative. The doctor and his whole team did their job very professionally. I am very impressed and pleased with the outcome. My treatment was very quick, professional and comfortable. Thank you very much and I will recommend this clinic to everyone I know.

I was blown away by how professional and eager to assist the staff were
I had lens replacement and cataract surgery and was blown away by how professional and eager to assist the staff were. It was followed up by Bookimed a week later since Id returned home. They even refunded me some of my original payment even though I hadn't requested it as they found an error on the calculations. I know it's concerning to travel and have operations but from my experience you truly have nothing to worry about. I will definitely look at further surgery via this company and hospital.

And of course, a big thank you to Anastasia, an employee of the Bookimed website ❤️
I am very pleased that I made my choice and trusted the doctor, Professor Abdullah Ozkaya. It was this doctor who inspired confidence at our first meeting, was attentive, and answered all questions clearly and correctly. The clinic did not play any significance for me when choosing. Before that I was in 3 other clinics. But the doctors in those clinics did not inspire confidence in me. I think every person should find their own doctor. And a lot depends on the translator, how correctly he will translate everything. In other clinics, translators were incompetent. And of course, a big thank you to Anastasia, an employee of the Bookimed website ❤️

"Thank you Anastasia from Bookimed
I contacted the clinic via Bookimed.com before arrival and supplied them with my medical reports. They picked me up from the airport and sent me to my hotel. I requested having eye lens laser replacement asap so I can go back home a week after the operation. I arrived at the clinic early morning and was received by Anastasia, a health assistant supporting the patients and helping with the translation. I did all the pre operations test and then met with Dr. Remzi Karadag. He checked my test results and performed more tests, then confirmed my suitability for the operation. I had one eye operated on same day and the other eye the next day. I was issued with eye drops and information on how to look after my eyes during convalescence. A week on, so far so good. I am not using glasses anymore but full restoration of vision will take a month or maybe more. Thank you Anastasia from Bookimed.com and Anastasia and Dr. Remzi from Veni Vedi for the treatment and proffesionality

FAQ about Cataract surgery (both eyes) in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is cataract surgery in Turkey safe and what are the success rates?

Safety and success rates for cataract surgery in Turkey are exceptionally high, with vision improvement reported in 95% to 98% of cases. Facilities like Memorial Şişli Hospital and Dunyagoz Eye Hospital maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, using FDA-approved trifocal and monofocal intraocular lenses.

  • Success rates: Vision restoration reaches 98% in premier Turkish eye centers using advanced laser techniques.
  • Surgeon experience: Top specialists like Dr. Ertan Sunay have performed over 60,000 successful eye procedures.
  • Low complications: Serious risks like infections occur in less than 1% of monitored clinical cases.
  • Advanced technology: Clinics utilize femtosecond lasers and phacoemulsification systems for precise, bladeless lens replacement.

Bookimed Expert Insight: A major safety differentiator in Turkey is the specific experience volume of the surgeons. While European surgeons may perform 300–500 cases annually, Turkish experts at dedicated hubs like Veni Vidi Eye Clinics often complete 1,000+ surgeries each year. This high repetition contributes to the 97.6% clinical precision rate often cited in local medical audits.

Patient Consensus: Patients report achieving functional vision within 24 to 48 hours. Many emphasize the importance of choosing premium packages that include local language assistance and at least 3 days of hotel recovery to ensure stable post-operative checks.

Can both eyes be operated on during the same trip?

Yes, both eyes can be operated on during a single trip to Turkey using Immediate Sequential Bilateral Cataract Surgery (ISBCS). Surgeons typically space the procedures 24 to 48 hours apart to monitor initial healing before clearing the patient for international travel.

  • Standard timeframe: Patients generally complete both eye surgeries within 5 to 7 days total.
  • Clinical protocol: Surgeons treat each eye as a separate procedure to prevent any cross-contamination risks.
  • Typical stay: Most plans include 1 to 2 outpatient surgeries and 3 hotel rest days.
  • Travel clearance: A final post-operative exam occurs around day 5 before you fly home safely.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many US centers perform surgeries weeks apart, Turkish clinics like Veni Vidi Eye Clinics and Dunyagoz specialize in high-volume international protocols. Experienced surgeons here, many with 20,000 to 60,000 procedures, use a 48-hour gap between eyes. This specific delay allows doctors to confirm the first eye's pressure is stable before proceeding. It balances medical safety with the logistical needs of traveling patients perfectly.

Patient Consensus: Patients value completing both eyes in one trip to avoid the disorientation of unbalanced vision. Many recommend bringing wrap-around sunglasses and confirming that your clinic provides a written report for your home-country optometrist.

How long should I plan to stay in Turkey?

Plan a stay of 7 to 10 days for bilateral cataract surgery in Turkey. This duration accounts for the initial consultation, sequential surgeries on separate days, and mandatory ophthalmologist follow-ups. Most patients require 48 to 72 hours of stabilized vision before safely clearing international air travel.

  • Surgical schedule: Surgeries usually occur on consecutive days to ensure individual eye monitoring.
  • Recovery buffer: Vision typically improves rapidly within the first 3 days after the second eye.
  • Follow-up visits: Surgeons require in-person checks on day 3 and day 7 post-operation.
  • Flight safety: Maintain a 72-hour no-fly window after surgery to prevent pressure-related complications.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Look for packages including at least 3 to 5 nights of accommodation rather than outpatient-only deals. While the surgery is fast, clinics like Associate Professor M. Derda Ozer's include 3 nights in 4 or 5-star hotels to monitor for rare post-op inflammation. This buffer is critical because surgeons with 20,000+ procedures, like Dr. Ahmet Satici, emphasize that early detection of pressure changes ensures optimal long-term results.

Patient Consensus: Many patients suggest booking flexible airline tickets because recovery needs can extend a 3-day trip to 9 days. Bringing polarized sunglasses and extra eye shields is highly recommended for the flight home to protect healing eyes from cabin glare.

What is included in an “All-Inclusive” package?

All-inclusive cataract surgery packages in Turkey typically cover bilateral phacoemulsification, premium intraocular lens (IOL) implants, and comprehensive diagnostic testing. These bundles generally include 3 nights in a 4 or 5-star hotel, VIP airport-to-hotel transfers, and all necessary post-operative medications and follow-up examinations within the first week.

  • Medical diagnostics: Includes corneal topography, retinal scans, and biometry for precise lens sizing.
  • Premium implants: Packages feature Monofocal, Multifocal, or Trifocal lenses from brands like Alcon.
  • Logistics support: Provides VIP transfers between the airport, hotel, and Joint Commission International-accredited clinics.
  • Post-operative care: Covers 24-hour check-ups, antibiotic eye drops, and written recovery plans.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a significant value gap between basic and premium packages. For approximately $1,600 more than a standard monofocal plan, patients access Trifocal lenses and 5-star accommodations. Surgeons like Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer, with 25,000 procedures, often include these high-end options in mid-range bundles.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of getting a written, itemized breakdown of the specific IOL model before traveling. Many felt the inclusion of a dedicated translator made the surgical process much less stressful.

Will I still need glasses after the operation?

Whether you need glasses after cataract surgery in Turkey depends on your intraocular lens choice and vision goals. Standard monofocal lenses typically provide clear distance vision but require reading glasses. Premium trifocal or EDOF lenses can eliminate the need for glasses in 80% to 92% of daily activities.

  • Monofocal lenses: You will likely need reading glasses for close-up tasks like texting or reading.
  • Trifocal implants: These premium lenses usually eliminate the need for glasses at near and intermediate distances.
  • Toric lenses: Surgeons use these specifically to correct astigmatism, though you may still need readers.
  • Stabilization period: Vision fluctuates post-surgery, so wait 4 to 8 weeks before getting a final prescription.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many patients choose monofocal lenses for lower costs, our data shows that surgeons like Muhammet Derda Ozer, who has performed over 25,000 procedures, often recommend trifocal options like Alcon PanOptix to maximize lifestyle freedom. Investing in premium lenses upfront often proves more cost-effective than purchasing high-quality prescription glasses for years after surgery.

Patient Consensus: Most patients report achieving 20/20 distance vision shortly after the procedure. However, those with standard implants emphasize that keeping a pair of +2.50 power reading glasses handy is essential for using a phone or reading menus.
