Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff
Attentive and caring staff, friendly and welcoming, very clean clinic. There was a significant difference between the base price, which was between €5,000 and €8,000, and the only additional examination, which was €150. To our surprise, we were asked to pay €9,750, which is a difference of €1,650. I wanted to have cataract surgery on my left eye and was given a quote of €5,610, which I found excessive given that I had already paid €9,750. Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff.
The kindness of all the medical staff
1-We couldn't find a cushion after a vitrectomy, even after searching all over Barcelona, so I suffered without a cushion for my neck. 2-Leaving without the medical report, promising to send it to us by email, which we still haven't received after 11 days.

"We have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr
We were examined in one of the clinics of this network - the Dexeus hospital. I am very grateful to the medical coordinators of Bookimed for their help in organizing the consultation there. We have a very complex ophthalmological problem that we have been trying to solve for many years. We traveled to different countries, consulted with very experienced doctors in the largest university clinics in Germany. But unfortunately, none of them had encountered similar situations before and could not prescribe us an effective treatment to solve the problem. And when we arrived at the Dexeus hospital, we were able to get a very highly qualified consultation, conduct serious examinations, and now we have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr. Verges, who turned out to be the first doctor who successfully treated previously such complex types of eye allergies as my son had. The clinic of this network pleasantly surprised us with the most modern approach to examinations, a high level of specialists and cutting-edge equipment. Absolutely not inferior to well-known German clinics. We will now recommend her to our friends and family.
About Bookimed service

FAQ about Cataract surgery (both eyes) in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is it possible to have both cataract surgeries performed on the same day?

Immediate Sequential Bilateral Cataract Surgery allows patients to have both eyes treated on the same day. This procedure is safe and effective for suitable candidates. It is often recommended for patients with mobility issues or those traveling long distances to specialized Spanish clinics.

  • Travel convenience: Ideal for international patients visiting centers like Centro Médico Teknon in Barcelona.
  • Surgical approach: Surgeons treat each eye as a separate sterile procedure to prevent cross-infection.
  • Visual recovery: Facilitates faster neuroadaptation by eliminating vision imbalance between the two surgical dates.
  • Time savings: Patients require only one sedation session and fewer post-operative follow-up visits.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While same-day surgery is gaining popularity, many top Spanish specialists, including those at JCI-accredited facilities, maintain a 1-week gap. This delay allow surgeons to refine lens power calculations for the second eye based on the first eye's healing.

Patient Consensus: Patients report high satisfaction with same-day surgery because it minimizes time off work. Some note a brief period of functional dependency while both eyes initially adjust to the new lenses.

How long does recovery take after cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery recovery typically allows patients to return to light activities within 24 to 48 hours. While vision begins clearing immediately, full ocular stabilization and maximum clarity usually require 4 to 6 weeks. Patients often achieve their clearest vision between the second and third weeks post-procedure.

  • Initial healing: Vision improvement often starts within 24 hours as post-surgical swelling begins to subside.
  • Vision stabilization: Most patients reach optimal visual clarity by the second or third week.
  • Full tissue recovery: Complete internal healing and resolution of drop-induced haze takes up to 6 weeks.
  • Activity restrictions: Avoid swimming, heavy lifting, and eye rubbing for at least 1 to 2 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain’s top ophthalmology centers, like Centro Médico Teknon, frequently offer simultaneous bilateral surgery. This approach completes both eyes in just 30 minutes. Data shows 90% patient satisfaction with this method. It eliminates the need for two separate recovery periods and anesthesia sessions.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report feeling physically fine within a day. They emphasize that while vision clears quickly, the prescribed eye drops can cause temporary blurriness for several weeks.

Do I need to limit travel after the procedure?

Most patients can safely travel within 24 to 48 hours after cataract surgery in Spain. You should avoid driving for 3 to 5 days following surgery on both eyes. Doctors recommend staying near the clinic for 5 to 7 days for essential follow-up monitoring.

  • Travel timeframe: Wait at least 24 hours before planning any long-distance travel or flights.
  • Vision restrictions: Avoid driving for up to 5 days due to temporary blurred vision.
  • Eye protection: Wear a protective eye shield during travel for the first week post-op.
  • Clinical stay: Plan a 7-day stay in Spain to complete necessary follow-up exams.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain’s top ophthalmology departments, like Centro Médico Teknon, are highly efficient but public wait times average 123 days. Private patients bypass this, though staying 5 days post-surgery is vital. This window allows surgeons like Dr. Ferran Mascaró Zamora to confirm lens stability before you fly home.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize packing a protective eye shield and planning for 3 to 5 days of blurred vision. Most suggest coordinating with a local doctor at home to manage long-term post-operative care after returning.

Will I need to wear an eye patch afterward?

You typically do not need a traditional fabric eye patch after cataract surgery in Spain. Instead, Spanish surgeons usually provide a clear plastic protective shield. You must wear this shield while sleeping for 5 to 7 days to prevent accidental rubbing or pressure.

  • Daytime protection: Most patients do not require any eye covering during normal daytime activities.
  • Sleep protocol: Secure the plastic shield with medical tape while sleeping or napping.
  • Light sensitivity: Surgeons recommend wearing dark sunglasses outdoors immediately after surgery for comfort.
  • Vision recovery: Clear vision often returns within hours, eliminating the need for vision-correcting patches.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain ranks 3rd globally for medical tourism on Bookimed, largely due to high-volume centers like Centro Médico Teknon. Chief specialists there, like Dr. Ferran Mascaró Zamora, focus on rapid recovery protocols. While many clinics include the protective shield in the $1,800 to $3,200 procedure cost, always verify if luxury centers in Madrid provide premium post-op kits.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that while the rigid plastic shield feels unusual at night, it provides significant peace of mind. Many advise bringing high-quality sunglasses to your appointment to manage post-surgical light sensitivity during the trip back to your hotel.
