Good afternoon! I would like to leave a review: I would like to express my sincere gratitude to your company for the impeccable organisation of my examination. Every stage was thought out down to the smallest detail, which allowed me to feel completely safe and comfortable. Special thanks to the doctors — Dr. Bülent and Dr. Kemal. They are top-level specialists whose attention to detail and professionalism command deep respect. I really appreciate the thorough approach they took to my diagnosis. I would also like to thank the coordinator, Seda, for her sensitivity, and the female translators who accompanied me every step of the way and were a real support. I wish you prosperity, and the doctors further success in their noble work. I will confidently recommend you to my friends and family!

Thank Allah that we met him and he did a good surgery
Many thanks to Dr Bora Basharan and Alisher Durdiev! Diagnosis: carcinoma on the tongue. Alisher was very helpful with the choice and full support during the treatment. He gave us confidence in choosing Dr Bora Basharan by telling us about his professionalism and humanity. The most important thing for Alisher was the patient's health and to organise the diagnosis/surgery so that the patient gets the best results. We are very happy about this. We could not decide on the treatment (we were waiting for answers from South Korea) and Alisher did not give up to provide us with doctor's answers, answer our many questions and help with organisation. His ability to speak excellent Russian helped a lot in communication. The first meeting organised by Alisher went well. The doctor explained everything about the surgery and gave us peace of mind due to his experience as a highly specialised ENT surgeon in oncology. The operation went well and the follow up health checks. The recovery is good. We read many positive reviews online about Dr Bor Basharan which gave us more confidence. The reviews are true. After the surgery we were given a room with excellent food and the recovery was good. Thank Allah that we met Alisher and Dr Bora Basharan, for his golden hands, good surgery and organisation. Thank you very much again! Good health to all!

Honestly, I'm in awe from this experience
The hospital was fantastic, room was private, with all required amenities, cafe - lovely, everything was beautiful and clean. Staff were just so accommodating, my Doctor was knowledgeable, explained the procedure in detail. Honestly, I'm in awe from this experience. And even though I was coming in with a slight fear and a tiny panic attack, there was really no need to worry, everything is on a highest level! Thanks to all!
Translators were top notch! Everything was amazing, I can't select just one thing.
Had issue with payment, it kept getting rejected and due to this I wasn't admitted right away. But once payment went through, all services followed smoothly.

But I really liked the Bukimed service - they helped, supported, organised everything in the best possible way
There are certain issues with the hospital, in particular, the staff who are in no hurry and we had to spend the whole day in the hospital instead of a few hours - we waited, waited, and waited again..... But I really liked the Bukimed service - they helped, supported, organised everything in the best possible way. Thank you.
Overall, the hospital is good
Perhaps it's due to a different mentality, but we didn't really like waiting endlessly - no procedure or appointment started on time, no one is in a hurry and no one appreciates other people's time.

I felt like we had VIP treatment
My care was very good from start to finish. As soon as I arrived at the hospital, I was greeted by my interpreter and team. They were very friendly, put me at ease and explained what would happen and when. I had checks done and blood taken etc and met the consultant. He was absolutely lovely and again explained the whole procedure. I also met with the Anaesthetist. My procedure was completed and the care was fantastic from all the staff involved. The room and hospital were great. I felt like we had VIP treatment. The Hotel was also nice and everything runs like clockwork. Thanks to all the team but, especially to Ishmeal, Senna and Doctor Ozturk.

Bookimed staff and interpreters accompanied us every step of the way, we got answers to all our questions. Comfortable room for the patient and the attendant (in our case) Excellent clinic, attentive and meticulous (in a good sense) doctors. The medical staff also, put all the drips, served and made all the analyses on schedule. All promptly and without unnecessary questions. Tasty and nourishing food was provided for both the patient and the attendant. On the territory of the hospital is a beautiful small park for walking, as well as in the clinic itself there are many places for rest and waiting The clinic met all expectations and costs
What I liked most was the competence and attentiveness of the doctors

Dear readers, if anyone wants to be treated abroad, come specifically to Florence Nightingale and find Prof Ahmet-Tunç Ozdemir and you will not go wrong with your choice
I, Temirbek Ormotoev came from Kyrgyzstan, I chose Florence Nightingale Hospital which was helped by bookimed company and the staff of this company liked me, especially I am happy to deal with Professor Ahmet-Tunch Ozdemir. Today is the 3rd day after the operation performed by Prof Ahmet-Tunç Ozdemir. The operation was done wonderfully, I am satisfied and also the hospital conditions and medical staff were top notch, everyone is polite to the patients, especially the head nurse and nurse Linhai were very good at patient care. Why did I choose Florence Nightingale specifically? Because this hospital is one of the advanced hospitals in Turkey and there is a DaVinci robotised system. I have a neoplasm in my kidney over 30 mm. Prof Ahmet-Tunç Ozdemir performed the operation within 1.5 hours and he has golden hands. Dear readers, if anyone wants to be treated abroad, come specifically to Florence Nightingale and find Prof Ahmet-Tunç Ozdemir and you will not go wrong with your choice. I was discharged on the second day after surgery, I feel great and recovery is underway. In terms of the cost of paying for the surgery, compared to other clinics in Turkey, it is realistic and inexpensive. Mr Ahmet-Tunc Ozdemir, my family and I wish you good health, longevity, good luck in everything and that you stay for a long time saving patients from various diseases, Allah help you. I am also grateful to the medical coordinators of bookimed platform, Liana, who from the very beginning until today accompanies and helps with treatment abroad and assistants named Alisher, translator Aigerim, who know their business professionally. Thank you all who helped me with this situation, Allah bless us all.
Liked Prof Ahmet-Tunç Özdemir, service, medical staff, clinic, overall everything is good.

I wholeheartedly recommend them—and the hospital—without hesitation
I can’t thank Professor Sezer Sağlam and our guide Aliçer enough for the incredible care they showed during our visit to Florence Nightingale Hospital. I was very worried about the trip and my mum’s consultation, especially after a previous bad experience at another hospital where we were constantly pushed to upsell unnecessary scans. At Florence Nightingale, there was none of that—everything was professional, honest, and focused on what my mum actually needed. Their kindness, attentiveness, and guidance turned a stressful experience into one where we truly felt cared for. I wholeheartedly recommend them—and the hospital—without hesitation.

FAQ about Colectomy (large bowel resection) in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is it safe to travel to Turkey for this surgery?

Traveling to Turkey for a colectomy is safe when selecting JCI-accredited hospitals in Istanbul or Ankara. These major medical hubs operate under standard international safety advisories. Top-tier facilities maintain affiliations with institutions like Johns Hopkins Medicine and employ surgeons with extensive robotic and laparoscopic experience.

  • Accredited facilities: Clinics like Anadolu Medical Center and Memorial Şişli hold JCI accreditation for safety.
  • Specialized expertise: Surgeons often hold Fellowships from the European Board of Surgery in Coloproctology (FEBS-C).
  • Extended stays: Clinical protocols require 13–15 days of hospitalization to ensure post-operative stability before travel.
  • Advanced technology: High-volume centers utilize the Da Vinci Robotic System for minimally invasive bowel resections.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics offer quick turnarounds, the safest choices for complex colorectal surgery are those requiring a 13-to-15-day hospital stay. Data from Anadolu Medical Center shows they prioritize this long observation period for their specialized Wafi tube-ileostomy technique. This extended monitoring significantly reduces the risks associated with flying too soon after a major abdominal resection.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of bringing a companion and pre-printing Turkish medical phrases to manage hydration and output tracking. They also recommend securing international insurance that specifically covers medical evacuation and potential readmission costs once back home.

Will I need a stoma (ostomy bag) after surgery?

Whether you need a stoma depends on your surgical indication and the bowel segment removed. While many colectomies allow for immediate reconnection, surgeons may create a temporary ileostomy to protect the healing site or a permanent stoma if the rectum or anus is removed.

  • Temporary stomas: These typically remain for 3 to 6 months to allow the bowel to heal.
  • Surgical technique: Robotic systems and advanced laparoscopy used in Turkey help lower anastomosis leak risks.
  • Anastomosis factors: Active infections or poor bowel preparation may necessitate an initial protective ostomy bag.
  • Wafi procedure: This specialized tube ileostomy technique at Anadolu Medical Center can sometimes avoid traditional stomas.

Bookimed Expert Insight: When reviewing high-volume Turkish centers like Anadolu Medical Center or Hisar Hospital, look for surgeons like Dr. Vafi Atalay who utilize the Wafi tube ileostomy. This specific method is designed to provide the benefits of a protective diversion while potentially reducing the need for a second major stoma reversal surgery later, which is a significant clinical advantage for international patients.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend discussing personal anastomosis leak rates with your surgeon and joining supportive communities for gear advice. It is helpful to pack adaptable clothing and confirm if your package includes interim ostomy supplies for the trip home.

What surgical methods are used in Turkey?

Turkish surgeons utilize advanced minimally invasive techniques including laparoscopic and robotic-assisted colectomy via the da Vinci Surgical System. These methods prioritize sphincter preservation and rapid recovery. Specialized approaches like the Wafi tube ileostomy and hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery are also available at JCI-accredited centers in Istanbul.

  • Laparoscopic surgery: Uses 4 small incisions to perform segmental or subtotal resections efficiently.
  • Robotic-assisted resection: Employs da Vinci technology for high-precision maneuvers in complex cancer cases.
  • Wafi procedure: Exclusive tube ileostomy technique designed to avoid traditional stoma bags post-surgery.
  • Open surgery: Reserved for emergency cases or complex obstructions requiring direct abdominal access.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a significant trend where top Turkish clinics like Anadolu Medical Center offer remarkably long 13-to-15 day hospital stays. This contrasts with typical 3-to-5 day stays elsewhere. This extended clinical monitoring period is often bundled into fixed-price packages, providing a higher safety net for international patients during the critical first two weeks of recovery.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently highlight the ability to walk on the first day after laparoscopic procedures. Many value the option for ileostomy reversals as early as 4-6 weeks post-operation.

How long is the typical recovery time?

Typical recovery after a colectomy in Turkey requires 4 to 6 weeks to resume normal activities. Full internal healing generally takes 2 to 3 months. Minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic techniques used at JCI-accredited centers often allow for shorter 1 to 3 day hospital stays.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 1–3 days for laparoscopic surgery or up to 15 days for complex packages.
  • Activity restrictions: Avoid lifting more than 5 lbs for 6 weeks to prevent post-operative hernias.
  • Work return: Most patients return to desk jobs within 4–6 weeks depending on energy levels.
  • Long-term healing: Complete bowel function stabilization and energy return typically require 2–3 full months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish centers like Anadolu Medical Center offer specialized Wafi procedure packages that extend hospitalization to 13–15 days. This isn't due to slower healing but reflects a high-care model. These longer stays ensure professional monitoring during the most critical first two weeks of recovery.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report walking the same day as surgery but warn of significant travel fatigue. Common advice includes stocking electrolytes and planning for 1 extra week of rest specifically to combat jetlag.

Which are the best hospitals for colectomy in Turkey?

The best hospitals for colectomy in Turkey include JCI-accredited facilities like Anadolu Medical Center, Memorial Şişli, and Hisar Intercontinental. These centers specialize in minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic-assisted resections, often utilizing Da Vinci technology to ensure 90-95% success rates and faster bowel function recovery.

  • Anadolu Medical Center: Johns Hopkins affiliate featuring the exclusive Wafi tube ileostomy for pouch-free recovery.
  • Memorial Şişli Hospital: First Turkish JCI-accredited oncology center using Da Vinci XI robotic systems.
  • Hisar Intercontinental Hospital: Top-rated for cancer care with surgeons performing over 400 complex gastric procedures.
  • Medipol Mega University: Massive healthcare complex with 25 operating rooms and 1.2 million annual patients.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Anadolu Medical Center high-end packages, while costing up to $38,000, include 13–15 days of hospitalization. This is significantly longer than the standard 3–6 days. This extended medical supervision is a strategic choice for complex colorectal cancer cases to monitor healing before international travel.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize choosing major Istanbul chains for access to English-speaking coordinators and robotic tech. Many suggest traveling with a companion and stocking probiotics to help the gut adjust to local foods during recovery.
