How Much Does Keratoplasty Cost in Turkey?

Keratoplasty in Turkey typically costs from $4,000 to $6,800. The final price depends on the specific surgical technique, clinic accreditation, and the complexity of the donor tissue required. Patients save around 76% compared to the US, where the average price is $22,500. Standard Turkish packages often include preoperative tests, ophthalmologist consultations, surgical fees, and local transfers in hubs like Istanbul and Ankara.

  • Procedure technique: Advanced methods like DMEK or DALK typically cost 20-30% more than traditional penetrating keratoplasty.
  • Artificial implants: Keratoprosthesis using artificial cornea materials represents the highest price tier in corneal surgery.
  • Hospital tier: JCI-accredited facilities in Istanbul often charge 15-20% more than smaller regional eye centers.
  • Combined surgeries: Prices increase when combining a transplant with cataract surgery or secondary glaucoma procedures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a specialized eye hospital like Dunyagoz or Veni Vidi offers superior value due to massive surgical volumes. Dunyagoz treats 66,000 patients annually and is preferred by international celebrities. For a more tailored experience, Associate Professor Muhammet Derda Ozer provides packages starting around $8,000. These include unique services like corneal topography and tonography, ensuring high-precision outcomes for complex CIS and European cases.

  • Innovative methods: Clinics employ methods such as DMEK (Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty) and DALK (Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty). These techniques ensure precision and improved outcomes.
  • High success rates: Keratoplasty procedures in Turkey achieve an efficacy rate of 85-90% for visual improvement. This depends on the patient’s condition.
  • Expert surgeons: Renowned ophthalmologists, including Professor Abdullah Özkaya from Memorial Şişli Hospital, have performed numerous successful keratoplasty surgeries. They are backed by extensive certifications and experience.

"You have wonderful employees, prosperity and all the best!" Return: "About the doctor: "Doctor A
The clinic has a welcoming atmosphere, but the wait for each appointment and an interpreter is sooo long. Doctor A. Ozkaya proved himself to be a professional, answered all our questions, the corneal transplant operation for my one-year-old child was rather quick and effective at the moment. We came across a very polite and excellent Bookimed coordinator Jan, he helped on any even minor issue, contacted the clinic, helped absolutely with everything! You have wonderful employees, prosperity and all the best!

It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided
It was a very good experience for us, and I will use this service in the future if necessary. All the answers to my questions were given. Everything is very organized. They have their own counter at the airport, where they arranged a transfer for us and brought us comfortably to the hotel. We were accompanied everywhere. The price of the service was as agreed in advance. There were no additional payments. I only spent money on my husband's eye drops at the pharmacy, but they're sold at affordable prices. The hospital is very modern, it's a large complex, there's a university nearby. The hospital has a special department for dealing with foreign clients. We didn't run, we weren't looking for anything, Mustafa was with us all the time and made arrangements for everything himself. There were a few days between the diagnosis and surgery, and we managed to book several tours of Istanbul. It helped us relieve the tension of worrying about the surgery. My husband has an agimatism, he got the best lenses in the world that exist right now. These lenses were made specifically for the parameters of his eye. It's been less than a week since the surgery, but my husband says he can see some things even better than he had with glasses before. The rehabilitation is not over yet, he has to drip eye drops on schedule for a month, take care of eyes, and don't lift heavy things and rub eyes. The doctors have done their job, now a lot depends on how clearly my husband adheres to the doctor's recommendations. It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided.

The recovery so far is better than expected
If you're considering this procedure, my main advice is to bring a physical card for payment. I used Apple Pay, which had a low transaction limit and forced me to make about 20 separate payments to cover the cost. Medically, everything was straightforward. I had lens replacement in both eyes on the same day, and the recovery so far is better than expected. my doctor, who took the time to explain which technique suited my eyes and was very honest about the realistic vision outcome I could anticipate. I must also say a huge thank you to the night nurse ( mirve ) I think was her name she was outstanding and took good care of me . It was reassuring that there were no additional expenses. The one thing to note is that there was little contact from the clinic after I left, but the core service was solid.
I can’t speak highly enough of the treatment from all staff especially mirve who looked after me through the night she came every hour to do my drops until I asked her to come at 6.00 in morning she gave me an extension number incase I needed anything before six , which I did at 5.00am she immediately came to my room and sorted my issue the operation went perfect and after only two days I can see better than I have in the last 18 years 👌👍👌 thank you everyone

Being able to see the world clearly really does change the quality of life
I’d like to leave a positive review of the Dünyagöz clinic and Bookimed, the company that helped me find this clinic. First and foremost, I’d like to highlight the high standard of service at the Dünyagöz clinic. Upon arrival, I was promptly met and immediately provided with an interpreter. So there is absolutely no need to worry about the language barrier — both Russian and English are available here. The interpreter accompanies you at every stage: from the initial consultation right through to the operation itself. This is very important, as eye care requires a precise understanding of all your concerns and the doctor’s recommendations. I was also pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and comfort of the wards. All the staff are very friendly, helpful and always ready to assist with any queries. Another definite plus was the full board: breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, so you don’t have to worry about practical matters and can focus entirely on your treatment and recovery. I would like to express my special thanks to Bookimed. Throughout the entire process, you are supported by a personal coordinator who helps organise your trip, answers questions and provides all the necessary details. My coordinator was Anastasia, and I am sincerely grateful to her for her support. She was available practically 24/7 and even helped with matters not directly related to the clinic. It was on her recommendation that I chose Dünyagöz. What’s more, Anastasia herself had previously had her vision corrected at the same clinic, so she was able to share her personal experience. Now we are both delighted with the result and can confidently recommend this clinic to others. If you’ve been thinking about vision correction for a while, there’s no need to be afraid or put off the decision. After the operation, you realise you should have done it much sooner. Being able to see the world clearly really does change the quality of life. I wish everyone good luck, good health and nothing but positive experiences with their new, clear vision!

I am very impressed with the quality and standard of the whole process
Communication was great. I was picked up from the hotel, transfered to the hospital, and accompanied by Adam (translator) through the journey. He knew exactly the intake process and what they would want. He was well organized and very friendly. The consultant spoke English and was very calm, and professional. I had femto iLasik which was without complication. Pre-op my prescription was -7. Day 0 post op, I could still see but with blurry vision. Day 1 post op, my vision is now 20/20. But eyes feel gritty but hopefully will ease in a few days. I am very impressed with the quality and standard of the whole process. I would highly recommend Turkey for medical tourism. It's affordable and a beautiful clean city to visit as well. Stupendous experience.

What really stood out was how my doctor took the time to show me what to expect with each lens type after testing my eyes thoroughly, which helped me confidently choose the multifocal option
What really stood out was how my doctor took the time to show me what to expect with each lens type after testing my eyes thoroughly, which helped me confidently choose the multifocal option. He performed the surgery personally on both of my eyes the same day. My recovery is going about as expected, and the clinic provided a clear aftercare guide. Just be prepared for the other costs. Of course, I had to pay for my flight, a two-week hotel stay, and also a required $150 medical insurance policy on top of the clinic's price.

My distance vision is now crystal clear at 20/20, which is a massive change from my previous prescription in the -3 to -6 diopter range
My biggest worry before getting LASIK was the risk of side effects like long-term dry eyes or glare. I can honestly say my recovery has been very straightforward so far. I’ve had no dryness at all, and even better, I haven’t noticed any halos or glare in low light, which was a huge relief for me. My distance vision is now crystal clear at 20/20, which is a massive change from my previous prescription in the -3 to -6 diopter range. Overall, the whole process was solid. Of course, everyone’s experience will vary, and when I was researching beforehand, I saw many people discussing side effects that I personally did not experience at all. I had the LASIK treatment rather than SMILE, so this review is based on my own LASIK experience. Make sure to do all your research beforehand. If your main concern is whether the clinic is good to get the procedure done, then in simple terms, yes, it is. Like any place, there are things outside of the actual surgery that could be improved, but I would recommend looking through reviews carefully and moving forward with what you personally feel comfortable and confident with.
The staff were good, the room provided was also great, and the surgery went very fast and smoothly with no issues at all. Everyone was kind and helpful throughout the experience. The staff who brought the food and checked in were especially nice. There was one individual in particular I’m not sure of his name, but he spoke English and was incredibly sweet, always checking in and asking if everything was okay. He definitely made the whole experience much better and more comfortable.
One area for improvement would be communication, as English seems to be limited mainly to the coordinator and doctor . If you need to ask other staff or reception for help or information, it can sometimes be a little difficult to navigate. I would recommend having a translation app available and making sure you have your in-hospital coordinator’s contact number handy, as following things up through reception or other staff is not easy . There was also a slight issue with payment, so I would recommend having a backup payment method or checking beforehand what to do if the card machine does not work, since payments are handled directly there. This is especially important if you are travelling from abroad, as I travelled from the UK.

I recommend bookimed
My husband and I traveled from New Zealand to both get eye lens replacement surgery. From the start we have had print and effient communication. With every question answered. We were picked up from the airport, taken to hotel, then the same day at our request taken to the hospital for our appointment. Two days later we were in having eye surgery again with pick ups and drop offs. We were met at the hospital entrance, by bookimed.com translators and hospital translators they were amazing every day, in every way. The doctors were provisional and onto it, explaining every detail, and answering all our questions. Our procedure went very well and we are very happy with the outcome and how amazing we can see, no longer with glasses or contacts. I recommend bookimed.com to everyone. Vikki

The surgeon and the medical team were brilliant and explained everything to me, which put me at ease
My biggest concern was the procedure itself and the potential side effects. Fortunately, the surgeon and the medical team were brilliant and explained everything to me, which put me at ease. It has now been 15 days since my umbilical cord stem cell treatment. To be honest, I haven’t noticed any changes yet, which is to be expected at this early stage. There is still some pain when I touch the injection site. I’ve been sticking to the post-treatment restrictions most of the time, and the clinic itself was good but not entirely modern, which is why I’ve given it four stars. Overall, it was a good experience and now I just need to be patient.

Here, however, they diagnosed my type of uveitis on the very same day, which was a huge relief
What worried me most was the uncertainty and the long search for the causes of my condition. Here, however, they diagnosed my type of uveitis on the very same day, which was a huge relief. The doctor immediately explained the possible triggers, which helped me understand the situation. It’s only been 15 days, and I’m still in the early stages of recovery. The pain in my eyes has eased slightly, as has my sensitivity to light. My visual acuity remains unchanged for now, but I realise that this will take time. The whole clinic team worked very smoothly and professionally, which gave me a sense of calm.

It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again!
Overall, the experience was very much worth. It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again! The cost was so much better than in the US, and I was also able to get the lens I wanted that is not available in the US yet. Other than a false assumption about where my hotel was located, and the drivers having difficulty finding me, the only perimeter went pretty smoothly. I’m happy with the outcome. I would only suggest that there be at least one nurse or medical staff besides the doctor who speaks English. Many more paranoid, or less traveled Americans would have a hard time going through that honestly. I feel the service is very worth iit overall, those are just some recommendations to make the service excellent and a no-brainer for Americans who need medical procedures.

I highly recommend this clinic
My entire trip to Istanbul was well organised from the very start: the transfer from the airport to the clinic, the interpreter, and the competence of the staff and the doctor. I really appreciated that the doctor calmly and without any fuss explained what was going to be done and which procedure would be best for me. The interpreter was also very good; overall, the examination and operation went quickly (and painlessly). I highly recommend this clinic. For the money, you get good service and, above all, a high-quality operation. Thank you 🤩
The clinic is excellent – I highly recommend it. The staff take great care of their patients. The doctor is highly competent and provided a great deal of information about the treatment and rehabilitation. After a painless operation, my vision had already improved by the evening. A week has now passed and I am very satisfied; I’ve had no problems at all during this time, my vision is good and I’m happy. Thank you for everything))

FAQ about Keratoplasty in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is the success rate for corneal transplants in Turkey?

Corneal transplant success rates in Turkey range from 70% to 95%, matching international standards for vision restoration. Advanced partial-thickness techniques like DMEK reach up to 99% efficacy, while traditional full-thickness procedures maintain a 90% success rate in JCI-accredited Istanbul facilities.

  • Success by technique: Partial-thickness transplants (DMEK/DALK) achieve up to 99% success for endothelial diseases.
  • Survival statistics: Clinical data shows 87.5% 1-year graft survival and 72% at 3 years.
  • Surgeon expertise: Top specialists like Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer have performed over 25,000 eye surgeries.
  • High-risk outcomes: Success rates typically average 80% for patients with diabetes or vascularized corneas.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patient volume is a major quality signal in Turkey. Veni Vidi Eye Clinics handle 50,000 patients annually, while Dunyagoz serves 66,000. This massive caseload allows surgeons to specialize in ultra-niche graft techniques that smaller clinics rarely perform, directly contributing to the high 95% success ceiling for keratoconus cases.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently report achieving 20/25 vision within six months of surgery. Many advise preparing for a 1–3 month monitoring period and stocking up on lubricants early to manage post-operative dry eye symptoms effectively.

What are the main risks of corneal transplantation?

The main risks of corneal transplantation include graft rejection, secondary glaucoma, and infection. While success rates are high, approximately 20-30% of full-thickness transplants experience rejection. Patients must monitor for sudden redness, pain, or decreased vision, which require immediate medical intervention to prevent permanent graft failure.

  • Graft rejection: Immune system attacks donor tissue, most commonly within 6–24 months post-surgery.
  • Secondary glaucoma: Increased eye pressure often linked to long-term steroid eye drop use.
  • Post-operative astigmatism: Irregular corneal shape frequently requiring corrective lenses or additional surgical adjustment.
  • Cataract development: Clouding of the natural lens often accelerates 3–5 years after transplantation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from high-volume Turkish centers like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital, which treats 66,000 patients annually, shows that surgeon experience directly impacts safety. Specialists like Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer have performed over 25,000 eye surgeries. Choosing a doctor with this level of volume significantly reduces the risk of technical complications during complex partial-thickness grafts.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that strict adherence to a lifelong eye drop schedule is the only way to prevent silent rejection. Many noted that secondary issues like cataracts or astigmatism are common but manageable with follow-up procedures.

Where do the donor corneas come from?

Donor corneas for keratoplasty in Turkey are primarily sourced from international eye banks in the United States and Europe, including Spain and Germany. This reliance on imports, often exceeding 70 percent, ensures a consistent supply of high-quality tissue that meets global safety standards for transplantation.

  • International sourcing: Clinics partner with the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) for certified tissue.
  • Screening protocols: Every donor cornea undergoes rigorous testing for HIV, hepatitis, and cellular viability.
  • Logistical timing: Imported tissue typically arrives fresh at Turkish hospitals within 24 to 48 hours.
  • Wait-list management: Using global networks helps patients avoid the long waiting lists found in other regions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While Turkey is a global leader in eye surgery volume, domestic donation remains low due to local cultural factors. Choosing a JCI-accredited facility like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental or Memorial Shishli ensures your surgeon uses premium tissue sourced from reputable Western eye banks with full traceability.

Patient Consensus: Patients often note that while tissue imports are the standard practice, you should factor in an extra 1 to 2 weeks for travel planning to account for international shipping logistics.

How long is the recovery period after corneal transplant?

Recovery after corneal transplant varies by technique, with partial-thickness procedures like DMEK healing in 2 to 6 weeks. Full-thickness transplants such as penetrating keratoplasty require 6 to 12 months for initial healing. Full visual stabilization often takes 18 months to 2 years for most patients.

  • Daily activities: Return to desk work is typically possible within 7 to 14 days.
  • Physical restrictions: Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for at least 4 weeks.
  • Visual clearing: Vision begins clearing in weeks but fluctuates for up to 1 year.
  • Suture removal: Stitches are typically removed between 3 months and 2 years post-surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume Turkish centers like Veni Vidi Eye Clinics and Dunyagoz prioritize advanced lamellar techniques like DALK and DMEK. These methods preserve more of the patient's original tissue compared to traditional transplants. This specialization significantly reduces the long-term risk of graft rejection and streamlines the healing timeline.

Patient Consensus: Many survivors report needing sunglasses indoors for several weeks due to intense light sensitivity. While most return to work quickly, driving often remains restricted for at least 6 weeks post-operation.

Is the corneal transplant surgery painful?

Corneal transplant surgery is not painful because surgeons perform it under local or general anesthesia. Patients typically feel only slight pressure during the one-hour procedure. Post-operative discomfort is usually mild, resembling a scratchy sensation or the feeling of having sand in the eye.

  • Anesthesia methods: Surgeons use local or topical anesthesia along with sedation for patient relaxation.
  • Immediate recovery: Expect a gritty feeling or pressure for 1–2 days after the surgery.
  • Light sensitivity: Eyes remain red and sensitive to light for several days following transplant.
  • Pain management: Most discomfort resolves by day 3 using prescribed gels or standard relievers.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While the surgery is painless, look for clinics offering comprehensive pre-op mapping. Associate Professor Muhammet Derda Ozer at his Istanbul clinic includes both corneal topography and ultrasonography in his $8,000 packages. This precision diagnostic approach ensures the graft fits perfectly, which significantly reduces the risk of post-operative irritation and long-term stinging.

Patient Consensus: Patients describe the actual procedure as a weird eye massage that is over quickly. The most challenging part is the first 48 hours when light can feel intense, but this fades rapidly with proper medication.

How long does keratoplasty surgery take?

Keratoplasty surgery typically lasts between 1 and 2 hours per eye. Total facility time generally spans 2 to 4 hours to include pre-operative preparation and post-operative monitoring. Most procedures in Turkey are outpatient, allowing patients to return home or to their hotel the same day.

  • Procedure duration: Most transplants take 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on the specific technique.
  • DMEK/DSEK speed: These partial-thickness procedures are often the fastest, averaging 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Full-thickness PK: Penetrating keratoplasty is more complex and usually requires 1 to 2 hours.
  • Laser assistance: Femtosecond laser-assisted versions can reduce active surgery time by 15 to 30 minutes.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While surgery is fast, the prep time often doubles the active cutting time due to donor tissue matching and numbing. Clinics like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital Istanbul Etiler manage over 66,000 patients annually because they streamline these outpatient logistics. High-volume centers often suggest a 5-day stay to ensure the graft stabilizes before you fly.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find the process much quicker than expected. They often report being surprised by the efficiency of same-day discharge and the brief time spent in the operating room.

How long should I stay in Turkey after corneal transplant surgery?

Most patients should stay in Turkey for 7 to 14 days following corneal transplant surgery. This timeframe ensures essential follow-up visits, enabling surgeons to monitor graft positioning and eye pressure before clearing you for international air travel.

  • Initial follow-ups: Surgeons require daily checkups during the first week to monitor for early graft rejection.
  • Suture review: Penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) patients typically need 14 days for a primary suture stability check.
  • Flying restrictions: DMEK or DSEK procedures using gas bubbles require waiting 2 to 14 days before flying.
  • Extended stays: Plan for 3 to 4 weeks if complications like swelling peaks or infections occur.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Bookimed data shows that while most procedures are outpatient, premium packages at clinics like Memorial Şişli Hospital or from Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer often include 5-day hotel stays. However, long-distance travelers should book flexible flights, as medication adjustments frequently occur between days 8 and 10 after the included stay ends.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that visual stabilization takes time and suggest avoiding the temptation to fly home before day 14. Many recommend packing extra prescribed drops and staying near the clinic to address common redness or swelling spikes safely.
