I am pleasantly surprised and grateful to everyone who took care of me
Excellent experience. I traveled from Mexico to have cochlear implant surgery. First of all, I found this hospital thanks to the attention of Bookimed, they attended me very well, got the best option and started the whole process. At the beginning I was obviously a little bit afraid that everything was real and correct and with good results, it was the first time I used this kind of medical tourism. I searched many countries and options and found the best deal through Bookimed at Hisar Hospital in Istanbul at the best price. Now that it's all over, I am pleasantly surprised and grateful to everyone who took care of me. I am impressed with how well they have organized everything for international patients. From the transportation, to the airport-hotel-airport, hotel-hospital-hotel, in all the appointments I had, more than 3 times in two weeks. The international department assigned me one and sometimes two translators, all were very well behaved, Dr. Yabuz Selim very attentive and professional, the hospital was excellent, the package included two nights accommodation in a room with two rooms, and meals for patient and companion. Pre-operative studies, post-operative follow-up, and only the agreed amount was paid from the beginning, not a dollar more we had to pay. I had never had this experience in a hospital before. The whole procedure was fast and without complications, they checked me 3 more times without any problem. They helped me resolve all my doubts and concerns, always with excellent response through whatsapp. I sincerely recommend and thank everyone involved in Hisar Hospital. I hope I never have to go back, but if I need to, I will not even look elsewhere.
Everything was excellent. It exceeded my expectations by far.

FAQ about Stapedectomy in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is stapedectomy in Turkey safe?

Stapedectomy in Turkey is safe due to high success rates of 90–95% and JCI-accredited facilities using advanced laser-assisted techniques. Surgeons often hold international certifications from the American College of Surgeons or the European Board, ensuring adherence to global safety protocols for hearing restoration.

  • Surgeon expertise: Leading specialists like Prof. Tayfun Apuhan have performed over 4,000 successful surgeries.
  • Clinical standards: Most top-tier Istanbul hospitals maintain Joint Commission International accreditation for patient safety.
  • Advanced technology: Clinics utilize da Vinci robotic systems and high-quality titanium prostheses for precision.
  • Comprehensive monitoring: Standard packages include 1 day of hospitalization and 6 days of hotel recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: A major safety differentiator in Turkey is the level of US-based training among top ear specialists. For instance, Prof. Yavuz Selim Yildirim at Hisar Hospital Intercontinental trained at Harvard and Johns Hopkins. This specific training background minimizes risks of facial nerve injury and ensures surgical techniques match current American standards.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize verified success in hearing improvement but warn that balance issues can persist for weeks. They strongly recommend obtaining all surgical notes and prosthesis details in English for local follow-up care back home.

What results can I expect and how long do they last?

Stapedectomy in Turkey typically yields permanent hearing restoration, with 80-90% of patients achieving significant improvement. Most individuals experience a hearing gain of 20-30 dB, often reaching near-normal levels within weeks. Results generally last decades, provided the prosthetic implant remains stable and secure.

  • Success rate: Approximately 80-90% of patients report life-changing hearing clarity post-surgery.
  • Hearing gain: Most patients see audiogram improvements of 20-30 dB shortly after recovery.
  • Longevity: Benefits typically last 10 years or permanently unless the prosthesis shifts.
  • Revision rate: About 10-15% of cases may eventually require adjustment due to refixation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish clinics like Liv Hospital Ulus now offer da Vinci robot-assisted systems for middle ear surgery. This robotic precision facilitates more stable prosthesis placement than traditional manual methods. Choosing a Fellow of the European Board of Otorhinolaryngology (FEBORL-HNS) ensures your surgeon meets rigorous international training standards.

Patient Consensus: Many patients describe the results as life-changing, noting that sounds become clear almost immediately. While temporary imbalance is common for a few months, the 78% savings compared to US costs makes the recovery period feel worthwhile.

Who is a good candidate and when is the procedure contraindicated?

Ideal candidates for stapedectomy in Turkey are patients with confirmed otosclerosis causing conductive hearing loss and a stable air-bone gap of at least 30dB. Success requires good speech discrimination, healthy eustachian tube function, and overall physical fitness to undergo microscopic or endoscopic middle ear surgery.

  • Otosclerosis confirmation: Candidates must have conductive hearing loss verified via pre-operative CT and audiogram.
  • Hearing threshold: Patients typically show an air-bone gap exceeding 30dB before surgery is recommended.
  • Infection status: Active ear infections or chronic inflammation are absolute contraindications for this procedure.
  • Tube function: Poor eustachian tube function prevents proper healing and is a major contraindication.
  • Age considerations: Patients over 70 face higher risks, though healthy older adults may still qualify.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish specialists like Professor Celil Göçer at Lokman Hekim Akay Hospital often prioritize endoscopic approaches over traditional microscopic surgery. Data shows these advanced techniques reduce the risk of taste-nerve damage and shorten the typical 6-day hotel recovery period. Always verify your surgeon has international credentials, such as Fellow of the European Board of Otorhinolaryngology, to ensure they meet global safety standards for delicate inner ear work.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of stable disease and clear nerve health before booking. Many suggest that confirmed conductive loss yields the most life-changing hearing improvements post-surgery.

How is the surgery performed?

Stapedectomy in Turkey is a microsurgical procedure performed through the ear canal to treat hearing loss from otosclerosis. Surgeons use an endaural approach to replace the fixed stapes bone with a Teflon or platinum piston prosthesis, often utilizing CO2 lasers to minimize inner ear trauma and vertigo.

  • Surgical access: Surgeons enter through the ear canal, elevating a small flap of the eardrum.
  • Bone removal: The immobile stapes superstructure is removed using manual micro-drilling or advanced laser-assisted techniques.
  • Prosthesis placement: A tiny piston is inserted into the oval window to restore sound vibration.
  • Anesthesia type: Most procedures use local anesthesia with IV sedation, allowing for immediate hearing tests.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many international centers still favor general anesthesia, Turkish clinics like Liv Hospital Ulus often utilize local anesthesia with sedation. This approach allows surgeons to perform a live hearing test during the operation. You may hear a series of test tones immediately after the prosthesis is placed to confirm a perfect fit before the incision is closed.

Patient Consensus: Many patients describe a moment of clarity when hearing is first tested on the operating table. Temporary vertigo or taste changes are common during the first 2 weeks, but these typically resolve quickly.

What is the recovery and after-care timeline?

Stapedectomy recovery in Turkey includes 1 day of hospitalization followed by 4 to 6 weeks for full hearing stabilization. Patients typically undergo a follow-up audiogram after 1 month. Surgeons use microsurgical approaches to replace the stapes bone with a prosthesis, restoring sound conduction effectively.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 1 day of clinical observation before discharge to your hotel.
  • Initial recovery: Ear packing is removed within 1 to 3 days post-surgery.
  • Activity restrictions: Avoid flying, swimming, or nose blowing for at least 2 weeks.
  • Hearing results: Significant improvements are usually confirmed during the 1-month follow-up visit.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many think recovery ends when packing is removed, the most critical phase is the 4-week stabilization. Data shows that clinics like Liv Hospital Ulus include 6 hotel nights in their packages. This longer stay is vital because air pressure changes during early flights can displace the new ear prosthesis.

Patient Consensus: Many patients notice a metallic taste or mild dizziness in the first week. Most report high satisfaction as hearing stabilizes, though using head elevation and avoiding salty foods helps manage early symptoms.

Which are the recognized clinics and how do I verify surgeon credentials?

Recognized Turkish clinics for stapedectomy include JCI-accredited centers like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental and Liv Hospital Ulus. To verify surgeon credentials, check for Fellow of the European Board of Otorhinolaryngology (FEBORL-HNS) certification or memberships in the Turkish Association of Otorhinolaryngology during your initial surgical consultation.

  • Clinic accreditation: Look for Joint Commission International (JCI) seals at centers like Medipol Mega.
  • Surgeon fellowships: Confirm international status via Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) credentials.
  • Specialized training: Seek surgeons with advanced training from institutions like House Ear Institute in USA.
  • Case volume: Verify your surgeon has performed hundreds of ear surgeries for improved safety.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While regional rankings matter, the most reliable quality signal in Turkey is the European Board certification (FEBORL-HNS). Dr. Yavuz Selim Yildirim at Hisar Hospital holds this along with American College of Surgeons fellowship. This dual certification is rare and indicates a surgeon who meets both European and American surgical standards.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend demanding specific case logs of 200 plus successful stapedectomies. They also suggest cross-verifying all Turkish endorsements against international boards to ensure technical proficiency and safety.

How long should I plan to stay in Turkey?

A stapedectomy in Turkey requires a 7 to 10 day stay to ensure safe recovery and air travel. This timeframe covers pre-operative consultations, the surgical procedure, up to 3 days of hospital observation, and a mandatory follow-up on day 5 post-operation.

  • Hospital observation: Patients typically stay 1–3 days for monitoring balance and initial healing.
  • Flight safety: Medical protocols recommend waiting 5–7 days post-surgery before flying home.
  • Post-op check: A follow-up visit on day 5 is standard to verify implant stability.
  • Recovery buffer: Staying 10 days total helps manage potential dizziness or minor post-surgical fatigue.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While basic packages offer 1 night in the hospital, Liv Hospital Ulus provides 6 hotel nights. This longer stay aligns better with the 7-day no-fly rule for middle-ear surgeries. Booking a comprehensive package ensures you are not rushing to fly before your inner ear stabilizes.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize planning a full week to account for hearing tests and potential dizziness. Many suggest booking flexible return tickets and bringing motion-sickness medication for the initial days after surgery.

What are the potential risks of a stapedectomy surgery in Turkey?

Stapedectomy surgery in Turkey carries typical risks such as dizziness, taste changes, and a small chance of hearing loss. Clinics like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental and Liv Hospital Ulus are JCI-accredited, reducing complication risks with experienced ENT surgeons. Follow-up care and travel timing are essential for safety.

  • Dizziness and imbalance: occurs in about 5% of patients, lasting up to three weeks.
  • Taste disturbances: damage to the chorda tympani nerve causes metallic taste, resolves in months.
  • Hearing loss risk: around 5%, with severe loss in about 1% of cases.
  • Infection and eardrum perforation: uncommon but possible complications after surgery.
  • Travel caution: wait 10–14 days post-op before flying to reduce blood clot risks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many top Turkish clinics, including Hisar Hospital and Liv Hospital, offer JCI accreditation paired with surgeons like Prof Tayfun Apuhan, who has performed 4,000+ stapedectomies, assuring high skill and safety. Packages often include follow-ups and transfers, which matter for smooth recovery and timely care after international surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey mention some dizziness and taste changes after stapedectomy, but most say these fade within weeks. Many appreciate clear aftercare plans and advice to avoid flying too soon, helping them feel secure during recovery abroad.

What is a stapedectomy, and why would Australians consider having this surgery in Turkey?

A stapedectomy is surgery to fix hearing loss from otosclerosis by replacing a frozen stapes bone with a small prosthetic. Australians often choose Turkey for this operation because clinics like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental have Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation and offer expert surgeons with advanced techniques.

  • Procedure details: Surgery involves a small incision in the ear canal under general anaesthesia.
  • Typical care: Includes a 1-day hospital stay and follow-up visits in some packages.
  • Clinic accreditation: Hisar Hospital and Liv Hospital are JCI accredited with modern facilities.
  • Experienced surgeons: Doctors like Prof Tayfun Apuhan have performed 4,000+ stapedectomies.
  • Package benefits: Some include transfers and 6-day hotel stays at Liv Hospital for convenience.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish clinics with JCI accreditation often bundle transfers, hospital stay, and follow-up visits into surgery packages. This helps Australians manage travel stress alongside expert care. Surgeons like Prof Tayfun Apuhan at Hisar Hospital bring vast procedure experience above 4,000 cases.

Patient Consensus: Australians find Turkish clinics professional and well organised for stapedectomy. Many appreciate hospital stays are short and follow-ups are included. Clear diagnosis confirmation by local GPs before travel is advised.

How long does the stapedectomy procedure take in Turkey and what kind of anaesthesia is used?

A stapedectomy in Turkey typically takes 45 to 60 minutes and is performed under general anaesthesia. Some centres add local anaesthesia infiltration to reduce bleeding. Patients usually stay in hospital for 1 day and begin moving within 24 to 48 hours after surgery.

  • Procedure duration: 45 to 60 minutes, allowing precise ossicle work.
  • Anaesthesia type: general anaesthesia with occasional local infiltration.
  • Hospital stay: usually 1 day for monitoring post-op recovery.
  • Recovery: mobility restored within 1–2 days after operation.
  • Follow-up: essential to monitor healing and hearing improvement.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics in Istanbul like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental and Liv Hospital Ulus use both general anaesthesia and local infiltration to control bleeding during stapedectomy. Packages often include a 1-day hospital stay and follow-up care, which helps reduce risks and allows better recovery. Avoid clinics offering much shorter procedures under 20 minutes, as detailed ear bone work requires careful timing.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey say stapedectomy felt smooth with professional anaesthesia care. The 1-day hospital stay gave peace of mind before going home. Recovery was quick enough to move around within a day or two, but resting from flying was advised for about two weeks.

What is the recovery time after a stapedectomy performed in Turkey?

The recovery time after a stapedectomy in Turkey generally involves a 1-day hospital stay with mild discomfort lasting days to weeks. Patients can resume light activities within one week, while full hearing improvement may take up to 6 months. Follow-up care lasts about 3 months.

  • Hospital stay: Usually 1 day, often allowing same-day discharge.
  • Discomfort duration: Mild symptoms last a few days to weeks post-surgery.
  • Activity: Light activities can resume after 7 days; avoid heavy lifting longer.
  • Hearing recovery: Noticeable improvements occur within 1 to 6 months.
  • Follow-up care: Includes visits for hearing and tinnitus checks over 3 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics like Liv Hospital Ulus bundle transfers and multiple follow-ups in packages. Experienced surgeons at Hisar Hospital Intercontinental have performed thousands of stapedectomies, ensuring smooth, monitored recovery for international patients, helping Australians plan return flights after 10 days safely.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey say mild discomfort eases within a week. Most hear better within months and find follow-up care thorough. Australians appreciate clear advice about avoiding heavy lifting and timing their return flights after surgery.

How long do patients stay in hospital after a stapedectomy in Turkey?

Patients typically stay in hospital for 1 day after a stapedectomy in Turkey. This allows for monitoring balance and initial recovery. Follow-up visits are included and usually happen after discharge to check healing.

  • Hospital stay: Standard is 1 day for observation and dizziness monitoring.
  • Follow-up care: Post-discharge exams and visits are part of treatment.
  • Package offers: Some clinics include hospital stay and follow-up in the price.
  • Clinic protocols: Stay duration may vary; some clinics offer day surgery.
  • Travel advice: Plan at least 1 night in hospital before flying or returning to a hotel.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish clinics like Liv Hospital Ulus and Hisar Hospital Intercontinental include a 1-day hospital stay for stapedectomy, balancing safety with quicker discharge. Most patients find a 24-hour observation period enough to handle dizziness, and packages often cover follow-ups and transfers, which is smart for Australians flying in.

Patient Consensus: Patients say hospital stays in Turkey last about 1 day, enough to settle dizziness. Follow-ups happen after leaving hospital, and transfers are usually smooth. Australians appreciate clear clinic protocols and no surprises on stay length.

What preparations are needed before having a stapedectomy in Turkey?

Preparing for a stapedectomy in Turkey involves thorough hearing tests, blood work, and an anaesthesia check. Patients must follow fasting rules, avoid applying cosmetics, and remove jewellery. Planning travel with support and discussing postoperative care with the surgeon improves recovery and safety.

  • Pre-operative tests: Audiometry confirms candidacy, plus blood tests and anaesthesia assessment.
  • Hygiene rules: Shower before surgery, no lotions, perfumes, deodorants, or nail polish.
  • Medication: Take instructed medicines with a sip of water on surgery day.
  • Travel planning: Book aisle seats, avoid heavy lifting, wear compression socks on flights.
  • Support presence: Bring assistance for luggage and daily tasks during recovery in Turkey.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Packages at top JCI-accredited clinics include pre-op tests, consultations, and transfers. Liv Hospital Ulus offers a 1-day hospital stay plus 6 nights in a hotel with airport transfers, easing logistics for Australian patients.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey highlight the ease of airport transfers and airport-hotel-clinic transport. The advice to quit nicotine well before surgery and have someone assist during recovery is commonly appreciated.

Does a stapedectomy surgery in Turkey involve operating inside or outside the ear?

Stapedectomy surgery in Turkey is performed entirely inside the ear, targeting the middle ear bones behind the eardrum. Surgeons operate through the ear canal or a small incision behind the ear to access and replace the stapes bone.

  • Inside operation: surgeons reach the middle ear behind the eardrum.
  • Approach: via ear canal or small incision behind the ear.
  • Surgical goal: replace or remove the stapes bone to restore hearing.
  • Muscles cut: stapedius and/or tensor tympani to stop involuntary twitching.
  • Performed at JCI-accredited hospitals such as Hisar Hospital Intercontinental.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish surgeons like Prof. Tayfun Apuhan at Hisar Hospital perform 4,000+ stapedectomies using precise internal techniques. Accessing the middle ear through the canal or a tiny incision is the standard in Turkey, matching global best practices.

Patient Consensus: Patients say stapedectomy in Turkey is always internal, working on bones behind the eardrum. They found it reassuring that surgeons explained the approach clearly and avoided external cuts whenever possible.
