Indications for CT
CT is prescribed for:
- carrying out primary diagnostics of a number of diseases;
- as a clarifying technique (to confirm a preliminary diagnosis);
- to control changes in the course of therapy.
Types of CT
CT ( spiral tomography ) is used to diagnose diseases of all internal organs.
MSCT ( multispiral tomography ) is a new model device with reduced radiation exposure compared to older models. It allows you to get clear layered images in different anatomical planes with high resolution in less time (only a few minutes). Supplemented by the introduction of contrast
MSCT allows the doctor to study in more detail the state of the vessels and the work of the heart, as well as to carry out:
- 3D reconstruction to create a complete model of the organ of interest, for example, in plastic surgery or cardiology;
- virtual colonoscopy or gastroscopy - a non-invasive examination of internal organs (requires special bowel preparation).
Preparation for tomography
No special preparation for CT is required. The only exception is a study with intravenous administration of a contrast agent. In this case, the diagnosis should be carried out on an empty stomach. Children and some adults, such as those with claustrophobia, are given a sedative.
How is a tomography performed?
Diagnosis using CT is quite fast. The study is carried out in a specially equipped room, where the patient lies on a special mobile table.
A contrast agent may be injected during the tomography (if required by the doctor) to more clearly show the area.
Contraindications for CT
There are no contraindications to the use of CT as such.
With some patients, intravenous administration of a contrast agent is negotiated on a separate basis due to the possible occurrence of an allergic reaction in them.
Contraindications for CT without contrast:
- pregnancy;<
- body weight exceeding the maximum allowable for the device.
Contraindications for CT with contrast:
- the presence of an allergy to the substances that make up the contrast;
- renal failure in exacerbation;
- diabetes;
- severe general condition;
- thyroid pathology.
