"I was extremely satisfied with everything that happened to me at this wonderful hospital"
I was extremely satisfied with everything that happened to me at this wonderful hospital. I don't think that there is a hospital in Asia which can compare with this one. From the doctors to the nurses and all other personell in this hospital ALL are competent, very polite and friendly - the only small criticism that I have is that unfortunately many don't speak English very well, that's a great shame.

Our Lung cancer surgery Techniques: What Suits You Best?

When considering Lung cancer surgery, it’s important to understand the different techniques and which is best suited for you. Here’s a concise comparison of popular options:

Lobectomy

Lobectomy is a surgical procedure that removes one lobe of the lung to treat lung cancer or other lung diseases.

Pros: Lobectomy is less invasive than pneumonectomy and preserves more lung function. It has a high success rate of around 85% for early-stage lung cancer.
Cons: It may not be suitable for patients with widespread lung damage or tumors in multiple lobes. Recovery can be longer compared to wedge resection.
Effectiveness: 85%
Duration: 2-4 hours
Recovery: 4-6 weeks
Best for: Early-stage lung cancer, localized tumors, and non-small cell lung cancer in patients.
Prices: Cost of Lobectomy from $7,000

Wedge Resection

A surgical procedure that removes a small, wedge-shaped part of the lung containing a tumor or abnormal tissue.

Pros: Less invasive than lobectomy or pneumonectomy, preserving more lung function. Typically results in a shorter hospital stay, with only 1-3 days required.
Cons: Higher recurrence rates compared to lobectomy, with approximately 10% more cases. Not suitable for larger tumors or those near major blood vessels.
Effectiveness: 95% success rate in removing small, localized tumors.
Duration: 1-2 hours
Recovery: 1-2 weeks
Best for: Small, early-stage lung tumors, particularly in patients with limited lung function.
Prices: Cost of Wedge Resection from $8,500

Pneumonectomy

Pneumonectomy involves the surgical removal of an entire lung, primarily to treat lung cancer or severe lung disease.

Pros: Offers a complete removal of cancerous tissue, reducing recurrence risk. Effective for large tumors that can't be excised by other methods.
Cons: Higher risk of complications and longer recovery time compared to lobectomy or wedge resection. Decreased lung function post-surgery.
Effectiveness: Success rate is around 70-80% in removing cancerous tissue.
Duration: The procedure takes approximately 4-6 hours.
Recovery: Recovery usually spans 1-2 months.
Best for: Large or centrally located tumors. Suitable for patients with localized lung cancer.
Prices: Cost of Pneumonectomy from $11,200

Lung segmentectomy

A pulmonary surgery that involves removing a specific segment of the lung affected by disease, often used to treat localized lung cancer.

Pros: Preserves more lung function compared to lobectomy. Less invasive than pneumonectomy, with fewer complications. Allows for targeted tumor excision, minimizing healthy tissue removal.
Cons: May not be suitable for large or multiple tumors. Slightly higher recurrence risk compared to lobectomy at 10%.
Effectiveness: Success rate is approximately 85-90% for early-stage lung cancer.
Duration: 2-3 hours
Recovery: 2-4 weeks
Best for: Patients with small, localized tumors, especially in early-stage lung cancer.
Prices: Cost of Lung segmentectomy from $9,000

FAQ about Lung cancer surgery

What is a lung resection?

A lung resection is an operation to remove part or all of an organ. In most cases, doctors resort to the procedure for lung cancer.

What is the difference between lung cancer surgery at home and abroad?

Specialists of foreign clinics perform resection using video-assisted thoracoscopic VATS method. They perform manipulations through 2-5 incisions of 2.5 cm. After such a procedure, the patient recovers faster than after a traditional open operation.

What are our patients guided by when choosing a clinic?

When choosing a hospital for the operation, they are guided by:

  • experience and qualifications of a thoracic surgeon;
  • intervention method;
  • accreditation and certificates of the clinic;
  • reviews of surgery for lung cancer at the medical center.

Operation types

Atypical (marginal) lung resection

Excision of the affected lung tissue without taking into account the localization of blood vessels and the structure of the bronchi.

Advantages: allows you to preserve the healthy part of the organ as much as possible.

Disadvantages: The procedure can cause severe bleeding and organ dysfunction.

Typical lung resection

Excision of the affected part of the organ, taking into account the anatomical features of the lungs. Types of procedure:

  • wedge resection - removal of the neoplasm and a small amount of healthy tissue;
  • segmentectomy - removal of a segment of the lung;
  • lobectomy - removal of a lobe of an organ;
  • bilobectomy - resection of the right lung. During the procedure, doctors remove 2 lobes;
  • pneumonectomy - complete removal of the lung.

Advantages: the procedure is accompanied by fewer side effects than marginal resection.

Disadvantages: during an atypical resection, the doctor removes more healthy tissue than during a marginal one.

How is the intervention going?

open intervention

The surgeon performs manipulations through an incision up to 20 cm.

Advantages: The operation provides the doctor with good visibility.

Disadvantages: The procedure leaves a large scar. Hospitalization lasts up to 2 weeks.

Video-assisted thoracoscopic lung resection ( VATS )

The surgeon operates through 3-5 incisions up to 2.5 cm. Through one incision, he inserts a tube with a camera that transmits an image of the lungs to the monitor. Through the rest of the incisions, the doctor performs manipulations with the help of special tools.

Benefits: VATS leaves small scars. Rehabilitation is 2-3 times faster than after open intervention.

Disadvantages: The procedure provides the doctor with less visibility than traditional open surgery.
