The doctor is very competent, trustworthy, attentive, positive and charismatic
My father, 76 years old, had a knee replacement - Dr Olcay Guller. The doctor is very competent, trustworthy, attentive, positive and charismatic. This is important because my father was very worried and doubtful, but after the first meeting with the doctor he was completely reassured. All pre-operative investigations were organised quickly. Preparation for the operation and the operation itself - everything went smoothly. The next morning my dad was already walking along the corridor with the help of crutches. Nurses and nurses are attentive and friendly, no remarks. Feeding was also excellent, even a lot. I was placed in a spacious ward with a large window and air conditioning. In the bathroom everything is adapted for immobile patients, spacious barrier-free shower. On the territory of the hotel there are a couple of cafes with a good menu, Starbucks. The internet in the hospital is quite good.
All in all it was a pleasant experience. Would recommend the hospital with a clear conscience if needed
About Bookimed service
I don't know how long I would have searched for a hospital myself if I hadn't written to Bukimed. There was hardly any free time for this, and there were many doubts about the choice. With Bukimed everything unfolded quickly and in a couple of weeks my father was already seen by a doctor.

FAQ about Knee Arthroscopy in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What should I prioritise when choosing a clinic for knee arthroscopy?

Prioritize surgeons with specialized training in sports medicine and high case volumes, such as those with 10,000 joint procedures. Essential criteria include JCI accreditation, robotic-assisted technology like the Journey II system, and comprehensive packages covering MRI diagnostics, physical therapy, and extended post-operative recovery stays.

  • Surgeon specialization: Seek experts with Master Knee Arthroscopy Course certification or AANA memberships.
  • Clinical benchmarks: Select facilities performing 18,000+ annual procedures to ensure high success rates.
  • Integrated diagnostics: Confirm packages include pre-op MRIs, ECGs, and anesthesiologist consultations for safety.
  • Recovery support: Ensure 10–12 days of local stay for rehabilitation and manual therapy.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a significant quality gap between general hospitals and specialized robotic centers. Centers like Turan Turan Health Group prioritize robotic-assisted precision for meniscus repairs. Choosing a clinic with US affiliations, such as Johns Hopkins, often ensures higher sterility standards and advanced physical therapy protocols.

Patient Consensus: Experienced patients emphasize prioritizing surgeons with over 1,000 documented cases and verifiable logs. They suggest budgeting for comprehensive rehabilitation support to avoid complications and ensure a full range of motion.

What are the common risks of knee arthroscopy?

Knee arthroscopy is a safe, minimally invasive procedure with a low complication rate between 1.1% and 1.6%. Common risks include temporary swelling, joint stiffness, and minor nerve irritation. Rare but serious complications include deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or infections, typically occurring in less than 1% of cases.

  • Post-operative swelling: Persistent fluid buildup is common and managed with the RICE recovery method.
  • Infection risk: Major infections occur in approximately 0.84% of procedures performed in clinical settings.
  • Blood clots: Deep vein thrombosis risk is under 1% for most orthopedic patients.
  • Nerve irritation: Small skin incisions may cause temporary numbness or tingling around the knee.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Quality varies significantly by facility type, so prioritize centers with specific robotic certifications. Clinics like Turan Turan Health Group use Stryker Mako systems to increase precision, which helps reduce the 5%–10% stiffness risk seen in manual surgeries. High-volume centers performing 18,000+ annual procedures typically maintain the lowest complication rates due to surgeon repetition.

Patient Consensus: Most patients report over 80% satisfaction but emphasize starting physical therapy on day 1. Travelers specifically suggest monitoring for calf pain or redness to rule out rare blood clots after long-haul flights.

Is physical therapy (rehab) necessary and is it included?

Physical therapy is essential for restoring joint mobility and muscle strength following knee arthroscopy in Turkey. While surgeons consider rehab medically necessary for successful recovery, standard surgery packages typically exclude formal physical therapy sessions, requiring patients to coordinate these services independently after returning home.

  • Rehab necessity: Vital for preventing joint stiffness and regaining full range of motion.
  • Package inclusions: Most Turkish packages cover surgery, anesthesia, and transfers but exclude PT.
  • In-clinic options: Select centers like OrtoCare Clinic provide post-operative manual therapies and pilates.
  • Recovery support: Surgeons usually provide a detailed rehabilitation protocol for your local therapist.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While most clinics exclude rehab, specialized orthopedic centers like Turan Turan Health Group perform over 18,000 procedures annually and often utilize robotic systems. Patients significantly improve their long-term outcomes by confirming the specific surgical technique used, such as the Dedeoglu Technique at Liv Hospital, which may require specific early-stage movements before flying home.

Patient Consensus: Many patients suggest budgeting an additional $500 to $1,500 for professional physical therapy in their home country. While some attempt self-directed exercises using digital guides, athletes frequently report better results and fewer complications with structured, professional supervision.

Is knee arthroscopy painful?

Knee arthroscopy is not painful during the procedure because it is performed under general or spinal anesthesia. Most patients experience only mild to moderate post-operative discomfort. This minimally invasive approach typically results in significantly less pain and faster recovery than traditional open surgery.

  • Anesthesia options: Surgeons use general or spinal anesthesia to ensure zero sensation during the operation.
  • Post-operative peak: Minor pain and swelling usually peak within 1 to 3 days after surgery.
  • Recovery timeline: Patients typically return to light activity and the gym within 2 weeks.
  • Pain management: Medical teams utilize the R.I.C.E. method and NSAIDs to manage early inflammation effectively.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish orthopedic centers like Turan Turan Health Group prioritize robotic-assisted techniques to minimize tissue trauma. Data shows surgeons like Dr. Erman Cekic often combine arthroscopy with stem cell therapy. This combination focuses on biological healing rather than just mechanical repair to reduce long-term stiffness.

Patient Consensus: Patients describe the surgery itself as painless but note that swelling causes a burning sensation afterward. Many report being able to walk with minimal assistance the same or next day.

How long should I plan to stay in Turkey for knee arthroscopy and travel safely?

For knee arthroscopy in Turkey, plan a stay of 10 to 12 days to ensure medical safety. Most patients spend 1 to 3 nights in the hospital before moving to a hotel for recovery. This timeframe allows for essential wound checks, initial physical therapy, and a Doppler ultrasound to rule out blood clots before your flight.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 1–3 days of inpatient care for initial monitoring and pain management.
  • Rehabilitation start: Many Turkish protocols begin weight-bearing exercises and mobility training on the surgery day.
  • Flight safety: Surgeons typically require 5–7 days post-op before issuing a fit-to-fly certificate.
  • Clinical follow-up: Packages often include daily clinic checks or outpatient visits until final surgeon clearance.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While baseline recovery suggests 1 week, the most comprehensive Turkish packages, like those at Turan Turan Health Group, include 10–12 hotel nights. This extended stay isn't just for comfort; it aligns with robotic-assisted surgery protocols that prioritize intensive early physiotherapy. Clinics with high volumes, such as OrtoCare with 10,000+ joint procedures, often bundle these long stays because consistent local monitoring significantly reduces the risk of travel-related complications like deep vein thrombosis.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend booking an aisle seat for extra legroom and suggest having a fly-safe letter ready for the airport. Many noted that Turkish clinics facilitate faster mobility, with some walking unaided by day 4, but emphasized keeping a flexible return ticket just in case.

When can I walk after knee arthroscopy?

Most patients in Turkey begin walking with crutches or a walker within 24 to 48 hours after knee arthroscopy. While weight-bearing is often permitted immediately, unassisted walking typically occurs within 2 to 7 days for debridement, while complex repairs require 2 to 6 weeks.

  • Early mobility: Gentle walking starts on surgery day to improve circulation and prevent clots.
  • Transition period: Many patients move from crutches to unassisted walking within 3 to 5 days.
  • Repair delays: Meniscus stitches or ACL reconstruction usually require 2 to 6 weeks of crutches.
  • Activity limits: Rehabilitation focuses on short distances for 4 weeks before starting light exercise.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from top Turkish centers like Turan Turan Health Group shows a preference for robotic-assisted techniques. Surgeons with over 10,000 procedures, such as Dr. Erman Cekic, often integrate post-op manual therapies. These advanced approaches aim to minimize the swelling that typically limits early walking speed more than pain does.

Patient Consensus: Patients often report a false sense of confidence due to small incisions, which can lead to overexertion. Common advice emphasizes that even if walking feels possible on day 2, using crutches for 5 days prevents long-term swelling setbacks.

How long does knee arthroscopy surgery take?

Knee arthroscopy in Turkey typically takes 30 to 45 minutes for straightforward diagnostic procedures. Complex therapeutic interventions, such as meniscus repairs or ACL reconstructions, generally require 60 to 90 minutes. Patients should plan for 2 to 4 hours of total facility time.

  • Diagnostic duration: Simple joint examinations usually conclude within 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Meniscus repair: Therapeutic procedures for tissue tears typically last 45 to 90 minutes.
  • ACL reconstruction: Complex ligament grafting often requires between 60 and 120 minutes.
  • Anesthesia prep: General anesthesia administration and pre-operative checks add 1 to 2 hours.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While surgery is fast, Turkish centers like Turan Turan Health Group often require 1–3 days of hospitalization. This contrasts with US outpatient norms but ensures professional monitoring during the critical first 48 hours post-op. Clinics affiliated with Johns Hopkins, such as Anadolu Medical Center, maintain these high safety standards through extended observation.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that Turkish surgical teams maintain efficient scheduling without rushing the procedure. Many suggest confirming VIP transport early, as driving is strictly prohibited for 24 hours after general anesthesia.

What is usually included in a surgery package for knee arthroscopy in Turkey?

Knee arthroscopy packages in Turkey typically include the surgical procedure, anesthesia, and essential preoperative diagnostics like blood tests or MRIs. Most plans bundle 1–3 nights of hospital stay with VIP transfers and luxury hotel accommodations for the recovery period.

  • Medical evaluations: Includes surgeon consultations, anesthesiologist reviews, ECGs, chest X-rays, and specialized knee MRIs.
  • Surgical costs: Covers operating room fees, general or local anesthesia, and board-certified surgeon fees.
  • Hospitalization stay: Provides 1–3 days in private rooms with nursing care and post-operative medications.
  • Logistics support: Standard inclusions feature VIP airport-to-hotel transfers and 4 or 5-star hotel stays.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While basic packages start near $1,800, high-end options from clinics like Turan Turan or OrtoCare often include extended hotel stays of 5–12 days. This is vital because Turkish protocols prioritize early, supervised mobilization. Choosing a package with 10,000+ procedure-experienced surgeons ensures these longer recovery windows are effectively managed.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize confirming if repair materials like anchors or stem cell therapies are included. Most suggest budgeting 15-30% extra for specialized compression braces or additional physical therapy sessions.

When can I fly home after knee arthroscopy?

Most patients can safely fly 2 to 7 days after knee arthroscopy in Turkey. For simple procedures like diagnostic scans or minor debridement, short-haul travel is often permitted within 48 to 72 hours once immediate post-operative swelling subsides and mobility is confirmed.

  • Travel window: Wait at least 48 hours for short flights and 14 days for long-haul travel.
  • Clinical stay: Turkish clinics like Turan Turan Health Group typically require 1–3 days of hospitalization.
  • Clot prevention: Surgeons recommend medical-grade compression stockings and ankle pump exercises to prevent deep vein thrombosis.
  • Mobility requirements: You must be able to flex the knee enough to fit into airplane seating.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While basic recovery takes a few days, many top-tier Turkish packages include 7 to 12 days of hotel stay. Dr. Kayhan Turan at Turan Turan Health Group, who has performed over 3,500 robotic procedures, often structures these longer stays to ensure patients complete initial physical therapy before flying. This extra time significantly reduces the risk of mid-flight stiffness or complications that can occur when traveling too soon after joint surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of requesting bulkhead seats or airport assistance through airlines like Turkish Airlines. They frequently suggest carrying clinic contact details to quickly address any swelling or calf pain encountered during the journey home.

What is the timeline for returning to daily activities after knee arthroscopy?

Most patients return to light daily activities within 1 to 3 days after knee arthroscopy. You can typically resume office work within 1 to 2 weeks, while full physical activity and low-impact sports usually require 4 to 6 weeks depending on procedure complexity.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 1 to 3 days of inpatient care for monitoring and initial physical therapy.
  • Walking: Most patients begin walking with crutches or a walker on the same day.
  • Driving: You may resume driving within 3 to 7 days once off all pain medications.
  • Desk work: Many patients return to sedentary jobs within 2 days with proper leg elevation.
  • Physical labor: Returning to heavy lifting or manual work typically takes 4 to 8 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish clinics often integrate advanced therapies to accelerate recovery. For example, Dr. Erman Cekic at OrtoCare Clinic combines arthroscopy with stem cell therapy. This approach aims to enhance tissue healing, potentially shortening the timeline for returning to high-impact activities compared to standard surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that using crutches immediately is standard. They often highlight that while desk work is possible quickly, keeping the leg elevated is essential for managing swelling during the first week.
