If a friend asked me about this, I'd tell them the difference is night and day
If a friend asked me about this, I'd tell them the difference is night and day. My knee feels so much better than it did before the surgery, with much less pain. Of course, recovery isn't instant. The biggest challenge for me right now is some morning stiffness, but once I get moving it improves. The clinic staff and surgeon were professional and answered all my questions about the full replacement, which included the kneecap and a Smith & Nephew implant. I can already bend my knee past 90 degrees easily. It was the right decision.
The coordination of services and language translation was excellent. We felt very cared for and the team listened to our concerns and we had professional, sophisticated and compassionate care.
My one concern was the difficulty we had with one of the translators at the hospital in Istanbul but it was because of difficulty with communication and misunderstanding.

The doctor is very competent, trustworthy, attentive, positive and charismatic
My father, 76 years old, had a knee replacement - Dr Olcay Guller. The doctor is very competent, trustworthy, attentive, positive and charismatic. This is important because my father was very worried and doubtful, but after the first meeting with the doctor he was completely reassured. All pre-operative investigations were organised quickly. Preparation for the operation and the operation itself - everything went smoothly. The next morning my dad was already walking along the corridor with the help of crutches. Nurses and nurses are attentive and friendly, no remarks. Feeding was also excellent, even a lot. I was placed in a spacious ward with a large window and air conditioning. In the bathroom everything is adapted for immobile patients, spacious barrier-free shower. On the territory of the hotel there are a couple of cafes with a good menu, Starbucks. The internet in the hospital is quite good.
All in all it was a pleasant experience. Would recommend the hospital with a clear conscience if needed
About Bookimed service
I don't know how long I would have searched for a hospital myself if I hadn't written to Bukimed. There was hardly any free time for this, and there were many doubts about the choice. With Bukimed everything unfolded quickly and in a couple of weeks my father was already seen by a doctor.

FAQ about Knee MAKOplasty in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is MAKO robotic-assisted knee surgery in Turkey safe and FDA-approved?

The MAKO robotic system is FDA-cleared technology used globally for total and partial knee replacements. In Turkey, this procedure is safe when performed at JCI-accredited facilities using the same Stryker-patented surgical precision standards, 3D CT planning, and haptic boundaries found in top-tier United States orthopedic centers.

  • FDA clearance: Stryker MAKO system received FDA clearance for knee procedures in 2006 and 2015.
  • Safety standards: Major Turkish hospitals like Memorial Şişli maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation.
  • Surgical precision: Robotic assistance allows bone cuts within 0.25mm, reducing soft tissue trauma and pain.
  • High success: Reputable Turkish centers report efficacy rates between 90% and 95% for robotic knee replacements.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics offer robotic surgery, the 5-day inpatient stays at hospitals like Memorial Bahçelievler provide a safety buffer. Most US outpatient models prioritize quick discharge, but Turkey’s extended clinical monitoring helps manage early physical therapy and reduces immediate post-op travel risks. High-volume surgeons here, such as Dr. Erden Erturer, have completed over 500 MAKOplasty procedures, matching the experience levels of top Western specialists.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize focusing on the surgeon’s personal MAKO case volume rather than just the clinical technology. They often highlight that choosing JCI-accredited centers in Istanbul ensures the same equipment and safety protocols as high-end American hospitals.

Who is an ideal candidate for partial knee MAKOplasty?

Ideal candidates for partial knee MAKOplasty are adults with early-to-midstage osteoarthritis limited to one or two knee compartments. This robotic-assisted procedure requires stable, intact ligaments like the ACL and PCL. Successful patients typically have localized pain after conservative treatments fail to provide relief.

  • Bone health: Candidates must have sufficient bone density to support the robotic implant system.
  • Ligament stability: Functional ACL and PCL are essential for the robotic resurfacing approach.
  • Weight requirements: Surgeons prefer a BMI under 35 to ensure long-term prosthetic success.
  • Pain localization: Arthritis must be unicompartmental or bicompartmental, confirmed by 3D CT scans.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish specialists like Dr. Mustafa Kurklu at Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital often include 3D CT scans in their $14,500 packages. This imaging is vital because roughly 10–15% of patients risk needing a full replacement within 10 years if minor multi-compartment disease is missed during initial screening.

Patient Consensus: Many patients emphasize that active individuals under 65 see the best results. They often note that weight-bearing X-rays are crucial for confirming you are a candidate for partial rather than total replacement.

How long will I stay in Turkey for MAKOplasty and what does the medical travel package include?

Patients typically stay 10 to 14 days in Turkey for knee MAKOplasty to ensure safe flight clearance. This timeframe includes 2 to 5 days of hospitalization for robotic-assisted surgery and physical therapy, followed by 7 days of local recovery and a final orthopedic examination.

  • Travel duration: Plan for 10 to 14 days total for surgery and recovery.
  • Hospital stay: Includes 2 to 5 nights in private rooms with nursing care.
  • Package inclusions: Covers 3D CT scans, robotic implants, surgeon fees, and medications.
  • Logistics support: VIP airport-hotel-clinic transfers and multilingual patient coordinators are standard.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics offer a standard 2-day hospital stay, choosing a package with 5 days of hospitalization, like those at Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital, provides more intensive early physiotherapy. This extra clinical supervision often leads to better initial mobility before you move to a hotel.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend confirming if 7 days of hotel accommodation is included or a separate cost. Many suggest flying business class for the return journey to manage leg swelling comfortably during the flight.

What is the expected recovery timeline and when can I return to work?

Knee MAKOplasty recovery in Turkey typically allows patients to return to desk-based work within 1 to 4 weeks. Most patients achieve full recovery for physical activities within 3 to 6 months. This robotic-assisted approach involves minimally invasive techniques that often enable walking with assistance within 24 hours.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 2 to 5 days of inpatient care for initial mobilization.
  • Walking milestones: Transition from crutches to a cane usually occurs within 1 to 4 weeks.
  • Manual labor: Physical jobs requiring heavy lifting typically require a 3-month recovery period.
  • Travel readiness: Long-haul flights are generally safe after 6 weeks once swelling risk decreases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Surgeons in Turkey often utilize 3D CT planning and robotic precision to minimize soft tissue trauma. This technology allows doctors like Dr. Erden Erturer at Liv Hospital Ulus to perform over 500 procedures with high accuracy. This precision often leads to fewer swelling flare-ups in weeks 2 through 4 compared to traditional surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that staying consistent with physical therapy is vital for meeting the 4-week return-to-work milestone. Managing site swelling with ice and elevation during the first month remains the most common practical challenge mentioned.

What credentials should I verify when choosing a robotic knee surgeon in Turkey?

Verify that your Turkish orthopedic surgeon holds Turkish Orthopedic and Traumatology Education Council (TOTEK) board certification and specific manufacturer training for the MAKO robotic system. Prioritize surgeons with international fellowships from institutions like Hospital for Special Surgery or Yale University and active membership in international bodies like the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS).

  • System certification: Confirm training specifically for MAKO SmartRobotics or NAVIO platforms at accredited facilities.
  • Hospital accreditation: Select Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited hospitals like Memorial Şişli or Hisar Intercontinental.
  • Volume experience: Look for high-volume specialists like Erman Cekic who has performed 10,000+ joint replacements.
  • Academic standing: Check for 35+ published research articles in PubMed-indexed journals regarding robotic-assisted techniques.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics advertise robotic capabilities, true expertise is reflected in scientific output. For instance, Dr. Mustafa Kurklu at Memorial Bahçelievler has 72 scientific publications. Choosing a surgeon who contributes to robotic surgery research often correlates with lower revision rates and better mastery of 3D CT-based planning.

Patient Consensus: Many patients suggest verifying the specific number of robotic cases handled annually. They recommend requesting a video call to review 3D motion data from recent successful outcomes before traveling.

Will I have visible scars, and what should I expect for scar management?

Knee MAKOplasty in Turkey resulting scars are typically 3 to 5 inches long due to minimally invasive robotic techniques. While initial redness is normal, these precision incisions usually fade into thin white lines within 6 to 12 months, becoming nearly invisible by 24 months.

  • Incision length: Robotic-assisted surgery requires smaller 3–5 inch incisions compared to traditional open procedures.
  • Healing stages: Scars appear reddest at 2–3 months before softening and flattening during maturation.
  • Sun protection: Apply SPF 50+ or use knee covers for 12 months to prevent hyperpigmentation.
  • Scar therapy: Start silicone gel or sheets after stitch removal at week 2 for 3–6 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Advanced clinics like Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital include 3D CT scans in their MAKOplasty packages to map anatomy before the first cut. This precision allows surgeons like Dr. Mustafa Kurklu to minimize soft tissue disruption. This data-driven approach often leads to faster skin healing and more aesthetic scar outcomes than generic manual replacements.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that daily massage with bio-oil after week 6 prevents the scar from sticking to underlying tissue. Many report feeling comfortable wearing shorts again within a year of consistent silicone and sun protection care.
