The doctor is very competent, trustworthy, attentive, positive and charismatic
My father, 76 years old, had a knee replacement - Dr Olcay Guller. The doctor is very competent, trustworthy, attentive, positive and charismatic. This is important because my father was very worried and doubtful, but after the first meeting with the doctor he was completely reassured. All pre-operative investigations were organised quickly. Preparation for the operation and the operation itself - everything went smoothly. The next morning my dad was already walking along the corridor with the help of crutches. Nurses and nurses are attentive and friendly, no remarks. Feeding was also excellent, even a lot. I was placed in a spacious ward with a large window and air conditioning. In the bathroom everything is adapted for immobile patients, spacious barrier-free shower. On the territory of the hotel there are a couple of cafes with a good menu, Starbucks. The internet in the hospital is quite good.
All in all it was a pleasant experience. Would recommend the hospital with a clear conscience if needed
About Bookimed service
I don't know how long I would have searched for a hospital myself if I hadn't written to Bukimed. There was hardly any free time for this, and there were many doubts about the choice. With Bukimed everything unfolded quickly and in a couple of weeks my father was already seen by a doctor.

Our Knee replacement Techniques: What Suits You Best?

When considering Knee replacement, it’s important to understand the different techniques and which is best suited for you. Here’s a concise comparison of popular options:

Knee Arthroscopy

A minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat problems in the knee joint by inserting a small camera and instruments through tiny incisions.

Pros: Offers quicker recovery times than open surgery, with fewer complications. Studies show up to 80% success in treating meniscal tears.
Cons: Limited to minor repairs and may not address severe arthritis. There's a 10-20% chance of needing further surgery.
Effectiveness: Effective in 70-90% of cases for relieving pain and improving function.
Duration: 1-2 hours
Recovery: 1-6 weeks
Best for: Meniscal tears, loose fragments, and mild to moderate cartilage damage.
Prices: Cost of Knee Arthroscopy in Turkey from $1,800

Unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement

This procedure involves replacing only one compartment of the knee joint, preserving more of the patient's natural bone and ligaments.

Pros: Retains more natural knee function with 85% of patients reporting a more natural feel compared to total knee replacement. Smaller incision results in quicker recovery.
Cons: Not suitable for patients with severe arthritis affecting multiple compartments. Revision rate is higher, with about 10% needing further surgery within 10 years.
Effectiveness: 10-year survival rate is approximately 85%.
Duration: 1-2 hours.
Recovery: 3-6 months.
Best for: Patients with arthritis confined to a single knee compartment. Ideal for those under 60 years old.
Prices: Cost of Unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement in Turkey from $3,500

Knee MAKOplasty

Knee MAKOplasty is a minimally invasive knee surgery using robotic assistance to ensure precise implant placement.

Pros: Provides more precision than traditional knee surgery, with a 90% success rate in pain reduction. Minimally invasive, leading to smaller incisions and less scarring.
Cons: Requires specialized equipment and training, which may not be available in all facilities. Longer learning curve for surgeons compared to traditional methods.
Effectiveness: 98% accuracy in implant positioning, enhancing joint function and longevity.
Duration: 2-3 hours
Recovery: 4-6 weeks
Best for: Patients with osteoarthritis affecting one or two knee compartments. Suitable for individuals seeking faster recovery.
Prices: Cost of Knee MAKOplasty in Turkey from $9,000

FAQ about Knee replacement in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is knee replacement surgery in Turkey safe and what accreditations should I look for?

Knee replacement in Turkey is safe when performed at Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited hospitals using FDA-approved implants like Stryker or Zimmer Biomet. High-volume centers often utilize robotic-assisted systems such as MAKOplasty to enhance surgical precision and long-term joint alignment.

  • JCI accreditation: This gold standard ensures hospitals meet over 300 global patient safety standards.
  • Surgeon volume: Superior outcomes are linked to surgeons performing 500 to 1,000+ joint replacements annually.
  • Implant quality: Leading clinics exclusively use international brands like Smith & Nephew or Zimmer Biomet.
  • Ministry certificate: Every facility must hold a Health Tourism Authorization from the Turkish government.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many focus on the surgery, the real differentiator is the post-op integration. Centers like Turan Turan Health Group or Dr. Gemalmaz combine advanced recovery like 5 physiotherapy sessions or 3D-printed surgical guides into their fixed-price packages. These inclusions are vital because early mobilization significantly reduces the risk of post-surgical complications.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize verifying clinic credentials through official JCI records before booking. Many suggest staying in Turkey for 10–14 days to complete initial physical therapy before flying home.

How long will I need to stay in Turkey for total knee replacement?

You should plan to stay in Turkey for 10 to 14 days for a total knee replacement. This timeframe allows for initial consultations, the 3 to 5 day hospital stay, and essential post-operative physiotherapy before receiving a fit-to-fly certificate from your orthopedic surgeon.

  • Hospital duration: Most patients spend 3 to 5 days inpatient for surgery and early rehabilitation.
  • Initial mobility: Physical therapy begins quickly, with most patients walking on crutches within 24-48 hours.
  • Recovery monitoring: A 7 to 10 day hotel stay follows discharge for wound care and check-ups.
  • Surgical follow-up: Surgeons perform a final X-ray and clinical evaluation before clearing you for travel.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a clear trend where clinics like Turan Turan Health Group or Anadolu Medical Center extend stays to 5 days for robotic-assisted or bilateral procedures. While manual surgery packages often budget only 3 days, choosing a 7-day hospital package like those at Büyük Anadolu Hospitals provides more supervised physiotherapy which is critical for long-term joint function.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize planning a full 14-day buffer to manage swelling and recommend booking extra-legroom seats for the return flight to ensure comfort and safety.

What does a typical knee-replacement package in Turkey include?

A typical knee-replacement package in Turkey blends high-tech surgical care with full travel logistics. Most plans include the prosthetic implant, surgeons fees, and 3 to 7 nights of hospitalization. VIP airport transfers and multi-day hotel stays are standard for international patients.

  • Surgical components: Covers anesthesia, operating room fees, and implants from brands like Stryker or Zimmer Biomet.
  • Diagnostic bundle: Includes preoperative blood work, X-rays, MRI scans, and consultations with an anesthesiologist.
  • Recovery support: Many packages add 5 to 10 physiotherapy sessions to jumpstart mobility before discharge.
  • Travel logistics: Provides VIP airport-to-hotel transfers and 2 to 10 nights in 4 or 5-star hotels.

Bookimed Expert Insight: The most significant differentiator between packages is the length of the hotel stay and the implant technology. While $7,000 to $8,500 plans at clinics like Lokman Hekim Istanbul Hospital cover basic recovery, premium $14,000+ packages at Turan Turan Health Group include robotic-assisted precision and 10 hotel nights. High-end clinics often bundle 24-hour nursing and nutritionist-led meals, which are vital for older patients traveling alone.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently highlight that they were walking with crutches within 24 to 48 hours post-surgery. Many advise confirming if specialized equipment like crutches or long-term bracing is included to avoid unexpected local purchases.

Who is a good candidate for knee replacement surgery in Turkey?

Ideal candidates for knee replacement in Turkey include patients with advanced osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or post-traumatic joint damage. Good candidates typically experience chronic pain that limits walking or climbing stairs and has not responded to six months of physical therapy, injections, or medications. Most patients are aged 50 to 80 with a body mass index under 35.

  • Medical necessity: Confirmed diagnosis of end-stage joint degeneration via MRI or X-ray imaging.
  • Health status: Stable cardiovascular health and no active infections to ensure safe general anesthesia.
  • Bone quality: Adequate bone density, often verified by a DEXA scan, to support implants.
  • Recovery commitment: Willingness to complete intensive physiotherapy starting the day after surgery for weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume centers in Turkey like Turan Turan Health Group often prioritize candidates for robotic-assisted surgery. Data shows surgeons like Dr. Kayhan Turan have performed over 3,500 robotic procedures. This technology is particularly beneficial for active patients seeking faster recovery. These candidates often transition to unassisted walking within 3 to 6 weeks compared to traditional manual methods.

Patient Consensus: Many patients emphasize that being physically active before surgery led to faster results. They report walking with crutches by the first morning and appreciate the attentive 24-hour nursing care provided in Turkish hospitals.

How painful is the recovery and what pain-control methods are used?

Knee replacement recovery in Turkey involve intensive discomfort for 2 to 4 weeks, with pain peaking in the first 48 hours. Surgeons use multimodal protocols including nerve blocks, PCA pumps, and IV medications to manage symptoms during the 3 to 7 day hospital stay.

  • Pain peak: Patients report severe intensity during weeks 1 and 2 before gradual improvement.
  • Control methods: Specialists use femoral nerve blocks, opioids, and NSAIDs for comprehensive relief.
  • Robotic precision: Procedures at Turan Turan Health Group use robotic-assisted techniques to minimize tissue trauma.
  • Early mobility: Walking begins within 24 hours to reduce stiffness and accelerate long-term healing.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a clinic like Turan Turan Health Group, which has performed over 3,500 robotic surgeries, can significantly impact initial comfort. Robotic precision often leads to less soft tissue disruption compared to manual methods. This technical accuracy typically translates to more manageable post-operative swelling and a smoother transition to physical therapy.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that consistent ice therapy is a game changer for managing swelling. While the first few days are challenging, many are walking with assistance by the next morning.

When can I fly back home after knee replacement in Turkey?

Most orthopedic surgeons in Turkey recommend waiting 10 to 14 days before flying home after a knee replacement. While short-haul flights may be permissible after 7 days, long-haul travel typically requires 6 weeks to safely minimize the risk of deep vein thrombosis.

  • Hospital stay: Packages usually include 3 to 7 days of inpatient monitoring and initial physiotherapy.
  • Clinical clearance: Surgeons like Dr. Kayhan Turan provide medical release forms required by international airlines.
  • DVT prevention: Patients must use compression stockings and prescribed anticoagulants during the return journey.
  • In-flight mobility: Frequent ankle pumps and walking every 45 minutes help maintain essential blood circulation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics offer 3-night stays, Turkey’s top-rated robotic centers like Turan Turan Health Group often facilitate longer local recoveries. Data shows 10-night hotel stays are common in premium packages. This extra time allows swelling to subside significantly before the pressure changes of a flight cabin.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize staying 7 to 10 days to confirm they can walk comfortably with crutches before navigating large airports. Many recommend booking wheelchair assistance and aisle seats to keep the new joint extended during the trip.

What should I pack and wear in Turkey during my knee-replacement stay?

Pack wide-leg trousers, loose shorts, and front-closing tops to accommodate surgical bandages and limited mobility after knee replacement. Prioritize supportive slip-on shoes with non-skid soles to ensure safety while using walkers. Include a universal Type F power adapter and breathable layers for air-conditioned Turkish hospitals.

  • Adaptive clothing: Bring palazzo pants or wide-leg joggers to fit over bulky knee dressings.
  • Safety footwear: Choose sturdy slip-on shoes like Skechers or orthopedic sandals to avoid bending.
  • Climate layers: Pack light cardigans or zip-up hoodies for cold hospital air conditioning.
  • Technical essentials: Carry a European Type F power adapter and a long-handled charging cable.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many high-end Turkish packages, like those at Turan Turan Health Group, include nutritionist-prepared meals. You do not need to pack heavy recovery snacks. Focus instead on bringing high-quality compression socks. While clinics provide them, having your own ensures a perfect fit for post-op swelling.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize choosing clothes that allow for quick wound checks without undressing. Most suggest bringing non-slip socks for navigating slick hospital floors safely during early mobilization.
