Mrs Bernaschia is empathetic and competent
I am pleased to be in a helping relationship with Anna from Bookimed. Our discussions lasted several months and she was always very accommodating and generous with her time. As for the rest of the treatment with Juventa, everything went according to plan. On the first day, I received 125 million cells and 6 billion exosomes in the IV (as planned), and 25 million in the joint of my thumb, which was full of osteoarthritis. On the second day, I received IV NAD and a subcutaneous placenta implant. Mrs Bernaschia is empathetic and competent. The work was carried out in a relational, professional and respectful manner.

FAQ about Stem cell therapy for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) in Mexico

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Will stem cell therapy cure ALS?

Stem cell therapy does not cure ALS. No medical treatment currently reverses amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. In Mexico, clinics use mesenchymal stem cells and exosome therapy to potentially slow symptom progression and protect surviving motor neurons. These experimental procedures aim to improve quality of life rather than provide a definitive cure.

  • Therapeutic goal: Treatments focus on neuroprotection and reducing neuroinflammation to delay functional loss.
  • Cell types: Clinics typically utilize mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from bone marrow or adipose tissue.
  • Administration routes: Procedures involve intravenous administration or donor stem cell therapy to reach neural pathways.
  • Regulatory status: These treatments remain experimental and are not FDA-approved for curing neurological diseases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While US treatments average $165,000, Mexico offers options starting at $1,600. ARC Stem Cells in Monterrey stands out by requiring a 3-day stay. This suggests a more cautious observation period than clinics offering same-day outpatient injections. Always prioritize clinics where doctors hold Mexican Board of Rehabilitation Medicine certification for regenerative safety.

Patient Consensus: Patients describe these treatments as an experimental attempt to buy time rather than a reversal. Reports mention temporary improvements in energy or swallowing, but many caution that these changes can fade quickly.

Is stem cell therapy for ALS safe in Mexico?

Stem cell therapy for ALS in Mexico is generally safe when performed at facilities certified by COFEPRIS and adhering to Good Manufacturing Practice standards. While experimental, reputable centers utilize mesenchymal stem cells from ethically sourced umbilical cord tissue to manage progression and symptoms.

  • Federal licensing: Verification of COFEPRIS certification ensures clinics follow strict biological tissue handling mandates.
  • Neurological oversight: Safe protocols require board-certified neurologists to lead treatment rather than general practitioners.
  • Laboratory quality: Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certified labs prevent contamination during cellular expansion processes.
  • Delivery methods: Physicians utilize intravenous or intrathecal injections to safely bypass the blood-brain barrier.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While safety is often the primary concern, the real differentiator in Mexico is the treatment volume and specialization. Clinics like Giostar Cancun serve 5,000 patients annually, creating a massive data pool for protocol refinement. Advanced Regenerative Center (ARC) integrates physical rehabilitation with stem cells, which is vital because ALS safety includes maintaining muscle function alongside the injections. Look for clinics that include a neurologist and rehabilitation specialist in their core team to ensure comprehensive care.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that travel itself is a significant physical hurdle and advise against clinics making miracle claims. Most suggest focusing on transparent protocols and avoiding centers that pressure you into quick financial commitments.

Is stem cell therapy for ALS legally approved in Mexico?

Stem cell therapy for ALS is not a standard medical treatment in Mexico. It is legally permitted as an investigational or experimental procedure. The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS) regulates these treatments through strict site-specific licenses for cell cultivation and administration.

  • Regulatory oversight: COFEPRIS monitors all human tissue and regenerative cell protocols in Mexico.
  • Required licensing: Legal clinics must hold both Stem Cell Bank and Regenerative Medicine licenses.
  • Experimental status: Procedures are categorized as investigational research rather than universally approved cures.
  • MSC applications: Most certified facilities focus on the expansion of mesenchymal stem cells.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Real data from over 5,000 patients annually at specialized centers like Giostar shows that legal compliance is tied to location. Top-tier clinics in Monterrey or Cancun maintain specific COFEPRIS authorizations that larger general hospitals may lack. Always verify that both the lab and the treating physician hold active registration numbers before proceeding with high-cost protocols.

Patient Consensus: Individuals seeking treatment often view Mexico as a vital experimental market. They emphasize the need to demand published trial results rather than relying on clinic testimonials.

How do stem cells help ALS patients?

Stem cells help ALS patients by secreting neurotrophic growth factors that protect existing motor neurons and suppress toxic neuroinflammation. These mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) act as a biological support system, slowing functional decline by stabilizing the neural microenvironment rather than replacing dead nerve cells.

  • Neuroprotective support: Cells release proteins that nourish and sustain remaining damaged motor neurons.
  • Inflammation control: Immunomodulatory properties calm immune overreaction to prevent further nerve tissue destruction.
  • Environmental repair: Transplanted cells differentiate into healthy astrocytes to restore stable neural surroundings.
  • Delivery methods: Intrathecal or intravenous infusions ensure concentrated cell delivery to the nervous system.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many search for cures, the real advantage in Monterrey and Cancun clinics is the high laboratory capacity. Giostar Cancun alone serves 5,000 patients annually, suggesting that high-volume centers often provide more refined cell processing protocols which are critical for experimental ALS management.

Patient Consensus: Patients often view these treatments as a way to buy more time by slowing the disease. Most value the psychosocial boost and caregiver reassurance, even if physical improvements are gradual or temporary.

What types of stem cells are used for ALS in Mexican clinics?

Mexican clinics primarily use Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) to treat ALS, focusing on neuroprotection and reducing neuroinflammation. Surgeons apply umbilical cord-derived cells, autologous bone marrow, or adipose tissue via intrathecal and intravenous delivery methods to target the central nervous system and slow disease progression.

  • Cell sources: Clinics utilize donor-derived umbilical cord tissue or the patient's own bone marrow.
  • Delivery methods: Intrathecal injections deliver cells directly into cerebrospinal fluid to bypass the blood-brain barrier.
  • Therapeutic goals: Treatments aim to protect motor neurons and suppress inflammation rather than replacing neurons.
  • Regulatory standards: Facilities like Advanced Regenerative Center (ARC) maintain certifications from the Mexican Board of Rehabilitation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics offer general wellness therapy, high-volume centers like Giostar Cancun serve over 5,000 patients annually with specialized protocols. Choosing clinics where doctors like Dr. Hernán Flores hold specific rehabilitation board certifications ensures a deeper focus on neurological recovery rather than basic aesthetic stem cell applications.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of requesting written documentation on specific cell sources and doses. Many suggest viewing the treatment as a way to potentially manage symptoms rather than expecting a total reversal of the condition.

How are the stem cells administered for ALS?

Stem cell therapy for ALS in Mexico involves three primary administration routes: intrathecal injection into the spinal fluid, intravenous (IV) infusion, or a combined approach. These methods aim to bypass the blood-brain barrier and target neuroinflammation directly within the central nervous system.

  • Intrathecal injection: Specialists deliver cells via lumbar puncture into the cerebrospinal fluid for direct neural access.
  • Intravenous infusion: Medical teams utilize standard IV drips to release cells into the systemic bloodstream.
  • Combined administration: Many centers pair spinal injections with IV delivery to maximize systemic and local impact.
  • Clinical guidance: Physicians often use imaging or sedation to ensure precise placement during invasive spinal procedures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Mexican clinics like Advanced Regenerative Center often bundle multiple delivery routes into a single $6,000 package. While many facilities offer standard IV infusions, those specializing in neurological disorders prioritize intrathecal methods. Dr. Hernán Flores and other specialists typically emphasize this dual-delivery approach to address both systemic inflammation and localized nerve protection during a single three-day visit.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report that sessions are rarely one-and-done and often require multiple days of treatment. Common experiences include post-procedure headaches and fatigue after the spinal administration, emphasizing the need for recovery time between injections.

How long do patients need to stay in Mexico for treatment?

Patients receiving stem cell therapy for ALS in Mexico typically stay between 3 and 14 days. While the medical infusion itself is often an outpatient procedure, patients with advanced symptoms require additional time for observation, travel recovery, and potential multi-session infusion protocols.

  • Core treatment: Focused medical infusions usually take only 1 to 2 days.
  • Observation window: Staying 72 hours post-infusion helps monitor for fatigue or side effects.
  • ALS mobility factor: Significant symptoms often require a 7 to 10 day buffer stay.
  • Package inclusions: Clinics like ARC Stem Cells include transfers but exclude hotel nights.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a gap between clinical `application` time and the reality of ALS travel. While centers like Giostar serve 5,000 patients annually with brief-stay protocols, successful international patients book 4 extra days. This allows for respiratory stabilization and mobility assistance before long-haul flights back Home.

Patient Consensus: Many emphasize that fatigue and mobility challenges make rushing home difficult. most recommend a one-week stay to ensure they have recovered from the intensive daily infusion protocols before traveling.
