How Much Does Droopy eyelid surgery Cost in Republic of Korea?

Droopy eyelid surgery in the Republic of Korea typically costs from $1,400 to $4,000. Final pricing depends on the surgical technique, ptosis severity, and the clinic's location in Seoul. Patients save approximately 49% compared to the US, where the average price is $5,300. Standard packages usually include the surgical procedure, anesthesia, post-operative medications, and necessary follow-up care like stitch removal.

  • Single eye correction: Typically costs 30-40% less than bilateral procedures.
  • Severe ptosis repair: Often carries a 50-70% premium due to complex muscle adjustment.
  • Seoul medical hubs: Major clinics are concentrated in Gangnam, Seocho, and Sinsa districts.
  • Technique variations: Non-incisional methods generally cost less than full incisional levator resection.

Now two months after surgery, I am quite happy with the shape of my new eyelids
The medical team members are so friendly and helpful. Although I speak zero Korean, I can sense their passion and empathy, which dramatically reduced my anxiety to go through the surgery. They are very supportive from the right beginning to the end when I left Seoul. And big thanks to the assistance from Yena, who provides detailed before and after care instructions rather than just working as an interpreter. Now two months after surgery, I am quite happy with the shape of my new eyelids. They look much younger and alert.

the translator Joanne was excellent and very attentive
t was a great experience, the doctor was good, but could have been more attentive. The staff are a little curt when it comes to customer service, but the translator Joanne was excellent and very attentive, there was also a very friendly older nurse. And there were also free therapeutic treatments that I really liked. Now I need to wait for the results to give a real assessment of whether the treatment was really good.

FAQ about Droopy eyelid surgery in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is the difference between ptosis correction and double eyelid surgery?

The primary difference is the structural target of the surgery. Double eyelid surgery is a cosmetic procedure focusing on skin and fat to create an aesthetic crease. Ptosis correction is a functional repair that tightens the internal levator muscles to lift a drooping eyelid margin.

  • Main goal: Double eyelid surgery creates creases; ptosis correction raises the actual eyelid position.
  • Target tissue: Surgeons manipulate eyelid skin for creases but adjust internal muscles for ptosis.
  • Recovery time: Double eyelid surgery heals in 1-2 weeks; ptosis requires 2-4 or more weeks.
  • Visual result: Ptosis repair increases pupil exposure, while double eyelid surgery adds lid depth.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many patients mistakenly request double eyelid surgery to fix sleepy-looking eyes. Korean specialists like Dr. Kim Joo Bong at HERSHE Plastic Surgery Korea often recommend combining these. Purely cosmetic creases on weak muscles can actually make eyes look heavier and more tired.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize getting a proper functional assessment first. They note that while combined procedures offer the best aesthetic lift, they require 4-6 weeks for initial swelling to subside.

What is the expected recovery timeline after droopy eyelid surgery?

Recovery from droopy eyelid surgery in the Republic of Korea typically lasts 10 to 14 days for initial healing. Most patients return to social activities within 2 weeks once bruising fades. Full internal tissue settling and final aesthetic results generally require 3 to 6 months.

  • Peak swelling: Bruising and swelling peak on days 2–3 before gradually dissipating over 1 week.
  • Suture removal: Surgeons at Korean clinics typically remove non-dissolvable stitches within 5 to 7 days.
  • Social readiness: Most patients use sunglasses for 7–10 days to cover temporary postoperative bruising.
  • Activity resumption: Light exercise and contact lenses are generally permitted after 2 to 3 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many Seoul clinics highlight quick recovery, data show swelling timelines remain biologically constant. Dr. Yong Woo Kim at Returning Plastic Surgery has performed 1,000+ procedures, emphasizing that early asymmetry during week 2 is a standard healing phase. Do not judge your final eyelid shape or symmetry until at least week 8.

Patient Consensus: Many find that dry eyes are a frequently underestimated side effect, making artificial tears essential. Patients often report temporary anxiety over initial swelling but feel comfortable in public by the third week.

Can the procedure be performed without making a full incision on the eyelid?

Republic of Korea surgeons specialize in non-incisional suture techniques and minimal incision methods (3–5 mm) for droopy eyelid correction. These scarless approaches use internal permanent sutures to lift the lid, offering a 3–7 day recovery compared to 14+ days for traditional open surgery.

  • Non-incisional suture method: Employs internal stitches through tiny punctures to lift the eyelid without visible scarring.
  • Minimal incision technique: Uses 3–5 mm openings to reach muscles, balancing durability with faster healing.
  • Candidacy focus: Best for mild to moderate ptosis in patients with thin skin and high elasticity.
  • Downtime comparison: Suture-only methods allow returning to work 1 week faster than full incision procedures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While non-incisional methods are popular for their 3-day recovery, our data shows these results typically last 4–8 years. Patients seeking a permanent solution at clinics like VG Plastic Surgery or SAERO Plastic Surgery often choose the minimal incision `middle ground.` This hybrid approach provides 1,000+ procedure-experienced surgeons enough access to prevent the higher revision rates associated with pure suture-only techniques.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the lack of external scars but emphasize requesting before-and-after photos for specific ptosis severity. The consensus highlights that while recovery is rapid, realistic expectations regarding long-term durability are essential for satisfaction.

How long should international patients plan to stay in Korea for surgery and initial recovery?

International patients should plan to stay in South Korea for 7 to 10 days for droopy eyelid surgery. This timeframe covers pre-operative consultations, the procedure, and essential suture removal. Most board-certified surgeons in Seoul clinics maintain this window to ensure safe air travel and initial healing.

  • Travel timeframe: Arrive 1–2 days before surgery for final consultations and mandatory pre-operative testing.
  • Suture removal: Plan for clinic visits on day 7 to remove surgical stitches safely.
  • Recovery monitoring: Expect peak swelling during days 3–5, requiring local monitoring by your surgical team.
  • Flight clearance: Surgeons typically provide medical clearance for long-haul flights once sutures are removed.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While a 7-day stay is common, choosing a clinic with high patient volumes like Returning Plastic Surgery hints at a faster, more efficient throughput. However, patients over 40 often benefit from extending their stay to 12 days. This extra buffer accounts for slower natural healing and reduces the risk of cabin pressure discomfort during the return flight.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that while you can technically leave after 7 days, public appearances are much easier by day 14. Many suggest staying near the Gangnam district to minimize travel stress during the intensive first week of healing.

What pre- and post-operative instructions should patients follow for optimal healing and safety?

Patients undergoing droopy eyelid surgery in the Republic of Korea must stop blood thinners and herbal supplements 14 days before the procedure. Post-operative care requires aggressive icing for 5 days and keeping the head elevated at 30 degrees for 2 weeks to manage peak swelling.

  • Medication safety: Stop aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and ginseng 7 to 14 days before surgery.
  • Infection control: Apply prescribed antibiotic ointment 3 to 4 times daily to the incision sites.
  • Suture removal: Plan to remain in Seoul for stitch removal between days 5 and 7.
  • Activity limits: Avoid bending, heavy lifting, or straining for 4 weeks to prevent vascular pressure.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Korean surgeons often use a more aggressive correction approach compared to Western techniques. Data from clinics like SAERO and VG Plastic Surgery show that while initial asymmetry at week 3 is common, functional symmetry typically stabilizes by month 3. Do not rush into revision surgery before the 6-month mark.

Patient Consensus: Many patients recommend icing far more aggressively than the clinic suggests during the first 72 hours. Expect a direct communication style from local surgeons and take detailed baseline photos to track the gradual 6-month healing process.
