I can genuinely say my eyes look perfectly matched
My main worry before the lateral canthoplasty was asymmetry, knowing how delicate the procedure is, but I can genuinely say my eyes look perfectly matched. It's such a relief. The surgeon and the entire staff provided wonderful care from start to finish. While I'm still in the early stages of healing, the shape is already very close to my goal. The recovery has been manageable. The biggest challenge has been sleeping upright, but that's a small thing compared to the results. I'm so glad I chose this clinic for my procedure and feel very looked after.

The surgeon and staff were excellent throughout
My biggest worry going into this was how visible the scars would be after my lower eyelid correction. Even though I’m still in the early stages of healing, the traditional incision lines are already barely noticeable, which is a huge relief. The surgeon and staff were excellent throughout. Based on the care I received and the initial results, I am very pleased with my choice of clinic. Gia my coordinator was lovely and very helpful. Huge thank you to all the medical, nursing and admin staff. 🙏🙏🙏🫰🫰

Now two months after surgery, I am quite happy with the shape of my new eyelids
The medical team members are so friendly and helpful. Although I speak zero Korean, I can sense their passion and empathy, which dramatically reduced my anxiety to go through the surgery. They are very supportive from the right beginning to the end when I left Seoul. And big thanks to the assistance from Yena, who provides detailed before and after care instructions rather than just working as an interpreter. Now two months after surgery, I am quite happy with the shape of my new eyelids. They look much younger and alert.

The support from the team and the surgeon has been unfailing
My biggest fear was that the result would look unnatural. Fortunately, that’s not the case at all. Even though it’s only been 15 days since the operation, my eyes look natural and smooth when I smile, which is very encouraging for the future. My biggest challenge at the moment is that the bruising isn’t fading as quickly as I’d imagined; patience is key. The support from the team and the surgeon has been unfailing. I really understand now why choosing a good surgeon is so important; it made all the difference to my confidence throughout the process.
The medical staff are very professional. They’re always there to listen to you.
I couldn’t find anything negative

the translator Joanne was excellent and very attentive
t was a great experience, the doctor was good, but could have been more attentive. The staff are a little curt when it comes to customer service, but the translator Joanne was excellent and very attentive, there was also a very friendly older nurse. And there were also free therapeutic treatments that I really liked. Now I need to wait for the results to give a real assessment of whether the treatment was really good.

FAQ about Cat Eye Surgery (Canthoplasty) in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What safety risks and potential complications are associated with lower-eyelid cat-eye (canthoplasty) surgery?

Cat-eye surgery or canthoplasty carries risks like eyelid malposition, including ectropion or entropion, and lagophthalmos, which prevents full eye closure. Potential complications include chronic dry eye, corneal damage, visible scarring, and asymmetry. Korean techniques sometimes prioritize aggressive aesthetic tilts, increasing the need for precision.

  • Eyelid malposition: Ectropion or entropion may occur, often requiring surgical revision.
  • Ocular exposure: Inability to close eyes fully can cause permanent corneal damage.
  • Vision issues: Patients may experience temporary blurred vision or rare orbital hemorrhage.
  • Aesthetic asymmetry: Uneven healing or overcorrection can result in an unnatural appearance.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from top Seoul clinics shows a high demand for revision specialists like Dr. Seung-hyung Noh at Seoul Miz Hospital. This suggests that while primary procedures are common, choosing a surgeon who publishes research on lower eyelid techniques, such as Dr. Seung-il Chung at Retmus Plastic Surgery, is vital for avoiding the 30-50% revision rate seen with over-aggressive styles.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report that initial swelling can hide asymmetry for over 3 months. Expect a 6–12 month total recovery and plan for lifelong use of preservative-free eye drops to manage post-operative dryness.

What qualifications and credentials should I look for when choosing a Korean surgeon for canthoplasty?

Prioritize surgeons board-certified by the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (KSPRS). For canthoplasty, seek specialists with oculoplastic focus and registration with the Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI). Ensure the facility uses in-house anesthesiologists and carries KOIHA or ISO certifications for safety.

  • Board certification: Verify membership in the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (KSPRS).
  • Clinical accreditation: Look for KOIHA or ISO standards to ensure international safety protocols.
  • Specialized experience: Choose surgeons like Dr. Yong Woo Kim who have performed 1,000+ procedures.
  • Facility registration: Confirm the clinic centers are KHIDI-registered specifically for international medical tourism.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume clinics in Seoul often differentiate through specialized safety technology. For example, clinics like Seoul Queen Plastic Surgery use 3D CT screenings to map facial structures before surgery. This data-driven approach reduces the risk of asymmetry in delicate eyelid procedures compared to traditional visual assessments.

Patient Consensus: Many patients emphasize verifying a surgeon’s volume specifically for canthoplasty to avoid post-operative dry-eye or ptosis. They recommend cross-checking independent reviews on local platforms like Naver to avoid overly polished social media marketing.

What is the step-by-step surgical technique for Korean lateral canthoplasty and how long is the typical recovery?

Korean lateral canthoplasty involves a precise 5–10 mm incision at the outer eye corner to release and reposition the lateral canthal tendon. Surgeons fix the tendon 2–4 mm laterally and 2 mm upward to the orbital bone periosteum, achieving an elongated, open appearance. Major recovery typically spans 1 to 2 weeks.

  • Surgical technique: Designers map incisions that often extend the horizontal eye length by 3–5 mm.
  • Tendon fixation: The lateral canthus is securely anchored to preventing the corner from shifting back.
  • Suture removal: Medical teams typically remove stitches 5–7 days post-op for immediate return to work.
  • Final results: Tissues fully soften and internal scars mature between 3 and 6 months post-surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics perform standard incisions, specialized centers in Seoul like Returning Plastic Surgery prioritize techniques like Yoon’s method. This approach avoids full tendon detachment, which significantly reduces the risk of long-term eye dryness. Choosing surgeons with 1,000+ documented cases is vital, as this experience level helps keep the 5–10% revision rate within manageable limits.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of the pre-op tape test for visualizing results. Most report that while swelling peaks early, sleeping with an elevated head is the most critical factor for avoiding 2-week hooding.

Who is a good candidate for cat-eye surgery and who should avoid it?

Ideal candidates for cat-eye surgery (canthoplasty) include individuals with downturned or flat outer corners seeking an almond-shaped, fox-like appearance. Best results often occur in patients under 30 with stable eye shapes, high skin elasticity, and realistic expectations regarding subtle 1–2 mm lifts.

  • Anatomical fit: Best for naturally negative canthal tilts or round, hooded eye shapes.
  • Health status: Requires good general health, no active infections, and controlled blood pressure.
  • Visual goals: Suited for those seeking refinement rather than extreme, trend-based facial transformations.
  • Surgical history: Most successful for patients without prior major eyelid surgeries or scarring.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many seek this for aesthetics, South Korean specialists like Dr. Yong Woo Kim at Returning Plastic Surgery emphasize that candidates with monolids or mild ptosis often see the most dramatic, natural-looking functional improvements. Data across 77 Korean clinics shows that combining canthoplasty with blepharoplasty is a common strategy to ensure the lift doesn't cause lower eyelid hollowing in patients with thinner skin.

Patient Consensus: Patients suggest testing the look with makeup first to ensure it suits your face. They often warn that those over 40 should be cautious due to higher risks of dry eyes or an over-pulled appearance.

What is included in canthoplasty packages offered by Korean clinics and how long should I plan to stay?

Patients should plan a stay of 7 to 10 days for canthoplasty in South Korea. While the procedure is outpatient, clinics require this period for monitoring and mandatory suture removal. Most surgeons advise against flying until stitches are removed to avoid complications from cabin pressure.

  • Core inclusions: Packages cover surgeon fees, twilight sedation, and use of advanced surgical facilities.
  • Medical screenings: Pre-operative consultations often include 3D CT screenings to assess facial bone structure and symmetry.
  • Post-operative care: Standard aftercare bundles deswelling injections, red light therapy, and specialized ointments for healing.
  • Logstical support: Most centers provide multilingual coordinators, airport transfers, and assistance with nearby hotel bookings.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many Seoul clinics like URBAN Plastic Surgery serve thousands of international patients annually, the best results often come from specialists who focus on minimal intervention. Dr. Seung-hyung Noh at Seoul Miz Hospital is noted for avoiding overtreatment, which can significantly reduce the heavy swelling typically seen during the first 3 days post-op.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that the first 3 days involve heavy bruising, making it essential to stay indoors. By day 5, most feel comfortable enough for light sightseeing before their scheduled suture removal.

How visible are the scars after canthoplasty and what scar-prevention steps are recommended?

Canthoplasty scars in the Republic of Korea are typically discreet, becoming virtually invisible within 6 to 12 months. Surgeons at centers like Returning Plastic Surgery strategically place incisions within the natural eyelid creases or lash line. Proper aftercare ensures these marks fade into fine, pale lines that blend seamlessly.

  • Healing timeline: Scars transition from pink lines to soft, faded hues between 3 and 6 months.
  • Sun protection: Wearing UV-protective sunglasses and SPF 30+ prevents permanent hyperpigmentation and dark scarring.
  • Silicone therapy: Applying medical-grade gels starting 10–14 days post-op helps regulate collagen and flattens tissue.
  • Lifestyle habits: Avoiding nicotine and maintaining high protein intake accelerates tissue regeneration and prevents thickening.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Leading Seoul clinics like URBAN Plastic Surgery often include specialized post-op kits featuring stem cell creams and LED light therapy. Data indicates these advanced recovery protocols can improve scar fading by up to 80% compared to standard care. This meticulous approach is why Korea remains a top destination for oculoplastic procedures despite a competitive global market.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that while initial tightness and redness last a few months, the final result looks like a natural skin crease. Many emphasize that following the clinic's specific aftercare kit exactly is the secret to achieving nearly invisible scars by the one-year mark.

Are there long-term side-effects like ectropion or altered blinking after canthoplasty?

Long-term side effects like ectropion or altered blinking are possible after canthoplasty but remain rare when performed by board-certified specialists. Most functional issues, including incomplete eye closure or sensation changes, typically resolve within 3 to 6 months as the canthal tendon heals and swelling subsides.

  • Ectropion causes: Occurs if the canthal tendon is anchored too far toward the orbital rim.
  • Blinking changes: Damage to the orbicularis oculi muscle can lead to incomplete or unnatural blinking.
  • Tissue deficiency: Excessive skin removal or scar contracture may pull the lower eyelid downward.
  • Dry eye: Compromised eyelid position often leads to poor tear distribution and persistent irritation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While US prices average $6,500, South Korean clinics offer canthoplasty from $1,400 with higher surgeon specialization. Specialists like Dr. Yong Woo Kim at Returning Plastic Surgery have performed over 1,000 procedures, drastically reducing the risk of permanent muscle damage through precise, high-volume experience.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report temporary lower lid sagging or a clicking sensation when blinking during the first 4 weeks. Chronic mild dryness is the most common long-term reality, making the consistent use of artificial tears essential for months post-surgery.

What are the risks of cat eye surgery (canthoplasty) in the Republic of Korea?

Cat eye surgery in South Korea carries risks including eyelid malposition, chronic dry eye, and visible scarring. Expert surgeons like Dr. Yong Woo Kim perform 1,000+ procedures. However, over-tightening the canthal tendon can lead to incomplete eye closure or permanent asymmetry between the eyes.

  • Functional risks: Malposition like ectropion pulls the eyelid away, exposing the delicate eyeball surface.
  • Vision disturbances: Aggressive tension may cause persistent double vision or permanent night-vision blurriness.
  • Irreversible alterations: Results are permanent because the procedure involves cutting and repositioning canthal tendons.
  • Scarring risks: Precise techniques minimise marks, but delicate outer corner skin remains prone to scarring.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Expert clinics like SAERO Plastic Surgery bundle hyperbaric oxygen therapy into their packages. This combats the common risk of prolonged swelling. This technology accelerates tissue healing. It is vital for Australian patients who must fly home shortly after their procedure. High-volume centres like AB Plastic Surgery maintain a double-average anaesthesiologist ratio. This significantly reduces the risks of general anaesthesia.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Korea find recovery manageable by sleeping upright. They appreciate how surgeon care ensures eyes match perfectly. They recommend confirming pupil measurements beforehand to avoid night vision issues. They also plan for potential dry eye support after returning home.

Does lateral canthoplasty for cat eye surgery in Korea cause scarring or reattachment?

Lateral canthoplasty in South Korea rarely causes permanent scarring or reattachment. This is the case when performed by experienced specialists. Modern techniques, such as periosteum fixation, secure the eyelid corner to the bone membrane. This prevents the tissues from shifting or growing back together during the natural healing process.

  • Periosteum fixation: High-tech fixation prevents eyelids from reattaching or reverting to original shapes.
  • Incision placement: Surgeons hide fine incisions inside the conjunctiva or along natural lash lines.
  • Scar maturation: Initial redness typically fades within 2 to 6 months for most patients.
  • Aftercare support: Clinics like SAERO Plastic Surgery offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy to speed up healing.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients often mistake temporary redness or raised tissue at 3 weeks for permanent scarring. Data from Seoul clinics shows that surgeons use specific wound-care protocols. Dr Park Young Kyu is one such surgeon. These inclusions significantly reduce the 6-month inflammatory phase common in standard eyelid surgeries.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Korea report manageable recovery, with swelling and redness that eventually fade. While sleeping upright is a common challenge, the final results usually match goals perfectly.

What is the recovery time for canthoplasty in Korea?

Most patients return to daily activities 5–7 days after canthoplasty in South Korea, following stitch removal. Initial bruising and swelling subside within 2 weeks. Achieving a natural look takes 1–3 months. Final tissue settling and scar fading may continue for up to 1 year.

  • Stitch removal: Surgeons typically remove non-dissolvable sutures between day 5 and day 7.
  • Initial recovery: Visible swelling and redness usually peak during the first 1–3 weeks.
  • Visual restrictions: Patients must avoid wearing contact lenses for at least 2 weeks.
  • Advanced healing: Clinics like SAERO Plastic Surgery use hyperbaric oxygen therapy to reduce swelling.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many assume a 1-week stay is enough, the most successful recoveries in Seoul involved staying 10+ days. This extra time allows surgeons like Dr Park Young Kyu to monitor the delicate eye corners closely. It also means any initial tearing or dryness is managed before the long-haul flight back to Australia.

Patient Consensus: Expect a fast return to light activity but prepare for blurry vision or sensitivity during the first 24 hours. Patients found that sleeping upright for several days helped manage swelling. Red incision marks took several months to blend perfectly with the skin.

Which clinics in Korea are best known for cat eye surgery (canthoplasty)?

Leading Seoul clinics such as SAERO Plastic Surgery, Returning Plastic Surgery, and AB Plastic Surgery specialise in cat eye surgery. These Gangnam-based centres use lateral canthoplasty and canthopexy to create a lifted almond shape. They often treat hundreds of international patients annually with English-speaking support.

  • Specialist expertise: Dr Park Young Kyu at SAERO has won Top Medical Resident awards.
  • Patient volume: AB Plastic Surgery treats 24,000+ patients annually with 30+ dedicated specialists.
  • Recovery: SAERO packages include hyperbaric oxygen therapy to speed up healing and reduce swelling.
  • International standards: Returning Plastic Surgery holds KOIHA and American Society of Plastic Surgeons accreditation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics offer lateral canthoplasty, the best results come from surgeons who perform 1,000+ eye procedures. Dr Yong Woo Kim at Returning Plastic Surgery has reached this milestone. His experience is vital for achieving symmetry. It also keeps scars virtually invisible within the eye's natural folds.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Seoul report that sleeping upright is the most difficult part of recovery. They found that results look remarkably balanced and matched their goals. They noted this when choosing clinics with English-language aftercare.

What is the difference between canthoplasty and canthopexy for cat eye surgery in the Republic of Korea?

The main difference lies in the intensity of modification. Canthoplasty surgically cuts and reconstructs the lateral canthal tendon. This gives dramatic reshaping. Canthopexy, on the other hand, uses sutures to reinforce and tighten existing structures. It does not lift or reattach the ligament. Seoul specialists use canthoplasty for a permanent Cat Eye tilt.

  • Canthoplasty technique: Surgeons cut and reattach the lateral ligament to a higher position.
  • Canthopexy approach: Sutures tighten the outer corner for subtle support and eyelid stabilisation.
  • Dramatic results: Canthoplasty is the preferred method for the sharp, upward fox eye look.
  • Revision capabilities: Specialists use canthoplasty to fix rounded or sagging eyes from previous surgeries.
  • Recovery aids: Clinics like SAERO Plastic Surgery include hyperbaric oxygen therapy to reduce swelling.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many seekers focus on a single procedure. However, Bookimed data shows specialists like Dr. Seung-il Chung often use lowering lateral canthoplasty. This specific variation prioritises a softer, balanced eye shape rather than a pure upward tilt. For a true cat eye transformation, Korean surgeons frequently combine canthoplasty with other procedures. These include ptosis correction or brow lifts.

Patient Consensus: Patients in the Republic of Korea report manageable recovery times when using hyperbaric care. They suggest asking surgeons about their goals. Patients should ask if the surgeon intends to raise, shorten, or reshape corners. This is more specific than just making eyes bigger. Sleeping upright is the main post-op challenge. However, the results match their goals for symmetry.

Can I combine canthoplasty with other surgeries during cat eye surgery in Korea?

Surgeons in Korea frequently combine canthoplasty with other procedures. This achieves a balanced almond or feline eye shape. Common pairings include double eyelid surgery, epicanthoplasty, and ptosis correction. These combinations often provide more dramatic results and are more cost-effective than performing surgeries separately.

  • Dual canthoplasty: Combines lateral and epicanthoplasty to lengthen the eye horizontally from both corners.
  • Ptosis correction: Fixes drooping lids so eyes look alert rather than sleepy.
  • Double eyelid surgery: Often paired with canthoplasty to create a defined, larger eyelid crease.
  • Facial contouring: Some patients include fat grafting or rhinoplasty for a total facial transformation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Combining eye surgeries is efficient. However, sequencing is vital for those also wanting a nose job. Specialists like Dr Seung-il Chung at Retmus Plastic Surgery suggest performing eye procedures first. Swelling from a rhinoplasty can temporarily distort eye anatomy, making precise canthoplasty adjustments difficult to judge.

Patient Consensus: Many find South Korea ideal for combining lateral canthoplasty with ptosis correction. Patients report manageable recovery when sleeping upright, though results can take months to settle fully.
