Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff
Attentive and caring staff, friendly and welcoming, very clean clinic. There was a significant difference between the base price, which was between €5,000 and €8,000, and the only additional examination, which was €150. To our surprise, we were asked to pay €9,750, which is a difference of €1,650. I wanted to have cataract surgery on my left eye and was given a quote of €5,610, which I found excessive given that I had already paid €9,750. Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff.
The kindness of all the medical staff
1-We couldn't find a cushion after a vitrectomy, even after searching all over Barcelona, so I suffered without a cushion for my neck. 2-Leaving without the medical report, promising to send it to us by email, which we still haven't received after 11 days.

"We have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr
We were examined in one of the clinics of this network - the Dexeus hospital. I am very grateful to the medical coordinators of Bookimed for their help in organizing the consultation there. We have a very complex ophthalmological problem that we have been trying to solve for many years. We traveled to different countries, consulted with very experienced doctors in the largest university clinics in Germany. But unfortunately, none of them had encountered similar situations before and could not prescribe us an effective treatment to solve the problem. And when we arrived at the Dexeus hospital, we were able to get a very highly qualified consultation, conduct serious examinations, and now we have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr. Verges, who turned out to be the first doctor who successfully treated previously such complex types of eye allergies as my son had. The clinic of this network pleasantly surprised us with the most modern approach to examinations, a high level of specialists and cutting-edge equipment. Absolutely not inferior to well-known German clinics. We will now recommend her to our friends and family.

FAQ about Corneal Cross Linking (CCL) (One eye) in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What does the CXL procedure involve?

Corneal cross-linking is a non-surgical outpatient procedure that stabilizes the cornea using riboflavin drops and ultraviolet light. It strengthens collagen bonds to halt progressive keratoconus or ectasia. Surgeons in Spain typically use the standardized epithelium-off method within Joint Commission International-accredited clinics to achieve success.

  • Procedure duration: Treatment lasts 30 to 60 minutes per eye under topical numbing drops.
  • Riboflavin application: Vitamin B2 drops saturate corneal tissue for 10 to 30 minutes before light.
  • Ultraviolet activation: Focused UV light triggers collagen bonding to increase corneal stiffness and thickness.
  • Immediate protection: A medical contact lens acts as a bandage for 2 days post-op.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish centers like Centro Médico Teknon balance high surgical volume with specialized care. While the procedure halts disease progression in 95% of cases, it rarely improves vision. Most patients require 1 to 2 months between eyes to ensure the first eye stabilizes before treating the second.

Patient Consensus: Expect sharp, stabbing pain and extreme light sensitivity during the first 48 hours. Many suggest preparing a dark room with blackout curtains and audiobooks since reading or screens are uncomfortable initially.

How long is the recovery time after CXL in Spain?

Recovery time for corneal cross-linking in Spain involves initial epithelial healing within 2 to 7 days. Most patients return to daily activities in 1 to 2 weeks, while vision stabilization takes 3 to 6 months. Full clarifying and corneal strengthening can continue for up to 1 year.

  • Initial healing: Primary epithelial closure typically occurs within 2 to 7 days for most patients.
  • Pain management: Discomfort usually peaks at day 3 and requires prescription medication and rest.
  • Light sensitivity: Extreme sensitivity lasts 1 to 3 weeks, often requiring sunglasses even indoors.
  • Vision stabilization: Visual clarity fluctuates initially, with significant stabilization reached between 3 and 6 months.
  • Contact lens refitting: Patients must typically wait 3 to 6 months before being refitted for lenses.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish clinics like Centro Médico Teknon often prioritize hospital-level safety standards with JCI accreditation. While many doctors quote a 1-week recovery, our data suggests computer-heavy work often requires up to 30 days. Patients should plan for follow-up visits every 5 to 6 days during the first two weeks.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find dark rooms and vitamin C-rich fluids essential during the first 48 hours. They often emphasize that while basic healing is fast, true visual stability is a 6-month journey.

Is CXL surgery safe and effective?

Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) is a safe, standard-of-care outpatient procedure that effectively halts keratoconus progression in 90–95% of cases. Most patients maintain vision stability using topical numbing drops, with visually significant complications occurring in approximately 3% of patients at JCI-accredited Spanish centers.

  • Success rate: Stabilizes keratoconus progression in 90–95% of patients to prevent vision loss.
  • Safety profile: Rare complications like corneal haze or infection occur in only 3% of cases.
  • Available techniques: Clinics offer invasive epi-off or less-invasive epi-on approaches for faster healing.
  • Recovery timeline: Initial healing takes 3–5 days with final visual assessment at 6 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many seek CXL for vision improvement, data shows 90% of patients experience only stabilization rather than enhanced clarity. Choosing high-volume centers like Centro Médico Teknon, where surgeons perform 23,500 operations annually, ensures the expertise necessary to manage the delicate epi-off recovery phase effectively.

Patient Consensus: Patients report the procedure is painless due to numbing drops, though anxiety beforehand is common. The epi-off technique typically involves manageable pain that peaks around day 3 before subsiding.

Can I combine the trip with sightseeing?

You can combine your trip with sightseeing, but schedule activities only before the surgery or after a five-day recovery. Initial healing involves significant light sensitivity and blurred vision. Spanish clinics in Barcelona and Madrid offer proximity to major landmarks, provided you strictly rest first.

  • Recovery window: Expect 2 to 4 days of extreme light sensitivity and dimmed or blurred vision.
  • Post-op rest: Spend the first 48 hours in a dark, quiet room to ensure healing.
  • Vision safety: Avoid walking through busy tourist districts until your vision clears for personal safety.
  • Sightseeing timing: Plan tours at least 1 to 2 days before the clinical procedure begins.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain ranks third globally on Bookimed for medical requests, partly due to the high density of JCI-accredited centers in tourist hubs. Centers like Centro Médico Teknon in Barcelona serve 10,000 patients annually and sit near accessible cultural districts. This allows companions to sightsee while the patient recovers in a dark room nearby. Check for clinics in Madrid or Barcelona to minimize travel time during the sensitive 4-day recovery period.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that outdoor sightseeing is nearly impossible immediately after surgery without professional-grade eye protection. Many suggest exploring local dining after 21:00 when the sun is down to accommodate heightened light sensitivity.
