Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff
Attentive and caring staff, friendly and welcoming, very clean clinic. There was a significant difference between the base price, which was between €5,000 and €8,000, and the only additional examination, which was €150. To our surprise, we were asked to pay €9,750, which is a difference of €1,650. I wanted to have cataract surgery on my left eye and was given a quote of €5,610, which I found excessive given that I had already paid €9,750. Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff.
The kindness of all the medical staff
1-We couldn't find a cushion after a vitrectomy, even after searching all over Barcelona, so I suffered without a cushion for my neck. 2-Leaving without the medical report, promising to send it to us by email, which we still haven't received after 11 days.

"We have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr
We were examined in one of the clinics of this network - the Dexeus hospital. I am very grateful to the medical coordinators of Bookimed for their help in organizing the consultation there. We have a very complex ophthalmological problem that we have been trying to solve for many years. We traveled to different countries, consulted with very experienced doctors in the largest university clinics in Germany. But unfortunately, none of them had encountered similar situations before and could not prescribe us an effective treatment to solve the problem. And when we arrived at the Dexeus hospital, we were able to get a very highly qualified consultation, conduct serious examinations, and now we have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr. Verges, who turned out to be the first doctor who successfully treated previously such complex types of eye allergies as my son had. The clinic of this network pleasantly surprised us with the most modern approach to examinations, a high level of specialists and cutting-edge equipment. Absolutely not inferior to well-known German clinics. We will now recommend her to our friends and family.

FAQ about Enucleation with implant insertion in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is enucleation with implant insertion?

Enucleation with implant insertion is a surgical procedure that removes the entire eyeball while preserving eye muscles and eyelids. Surgeons immediately bridge the volume loss by placing a spherical orbital implant made of porous polyethylene or hydroxyapatite into the eye socket.

  • Surgical goal: Removes diseased or painful eyes while maintaining natural socket structure and volume.
  • Muscle reattachment: Extraocular muscles attach to the implant to provide realistic prosthetic eye movement.
  • Recovery period: Patients typically achieve initial stability within 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.
  • Long-term care: A custom-matched prosthetic shell is usually fitted 6 to 8 weeks post-operation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain attracts patients for complex oculoplastics because elite facilities like Hospital Ruber Internacional integrate advanced diagnostics with veteran specialists. Dr. Ferran Mascaró Zamora at Centro Médico Teknon possesses over 25 years of orbital surgery experience. This high level of specialization at JCI-accredited centers ensures that the implant is perfectly torqued and centered for the best cosmetic outcome.

Patient Consensus: Expect mild soreness for up to 2 days after the procedure. Most patients emphasize that letting the socket heal naturally for 3 to 6 months ensures the most secure prosthetic fit.

Why is this procedure performed?

Enucleation with implant insertion is a life-saving surgery performed to remove eyes affected by intraocular cancer, such as melanoma. Surgeons in Spain preserve surrounding muscles and tissues to insert a mobile implant, which restores facial volume and allows for natural-looking prosthetic movement.

  • Tumor management: Removes malignant intraocular melanoma when radiation therapy is no longer viable.
  • Trauma repair: Treats severe eye injuries or ruptures that cause non-functional, painful blindness.
  • Infection control: Prevents end-stage ocular infections from spreading to the brain or socket.
  • Prosthetic base: Provides a foundation for custom ocular prosthetics using mobile implant techniques.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish ocular specialists like Dr. Ferran Mascaró Zamora focus on preserving eye muscles during enucleation. This technical choice is vital. It allows the final prosthetic to move in sync with the healthy eye. Patients at clinics like Hospital Ruber Internacional benefit from this approach, ensuring better aesthetic outcomes.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find this procedure critical for pain relief. They emphasize choosing implant-retained options over adhesives for better durability. Most value the ability to have a moving prosthetic for a natural gaze.

What types of implants are used?

Orbital implants for enucleation in Spain typically utilize bioactive materials like porous hydroxyapatite or polyethylene to facilitate vascular integration. Leading centers in Madrid and Barcelona also offer silicone or acrylic spheres to restore volume and support custom-fitted ocular prosthetics for optimal aesthetic results.

  • Biocompatible materials: Surgeons often use porous hydroxyapatite or polyethylene for tissue growth.
  • Volume restoration: Spherical implants maintain natural socket depth and support facial symmetry.
  • Prosthetic integration: Orbital implants provide the foundation for moving, custom-made glass or acrylic eyes.
  • Surgical standards: Spanish specialists follow Spanish Society of Ophthalmology (SEOO) guidelines for material selection.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Quality of care in Spain aligns with high international standards, as seen at JCI-accredited facilities like Hospital Ruber Internacional. While enucleation with implant costs between $5,300 and $9,500, patients save about 48% compared to U.S. averages. This price gap allows access to top-tier oculoplastic experts like Dr. Ferran Mascaró Zamora in Barcelona without compromising on advanced implant technology.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize distinguishing between the internal orbital implant and the exterior prosthetic eye, noting that early surgeon consultation is vital for matching implant materials to long-term mobility goals.

What are the advantages of this procedure?

Enucleation with implant insertion in Spain offers superior aesthetic results by preserving natural eye muscle function for prosthetic movement. Patients benefit from advanced surgical techniques at JCI-accredited facilities that prioritize long-term orbital volume and natural facial symmetry. This integrated approach ensures a stable, realistic prosthetic fit that lasts for several years.

  • Functional motility: Connecting muscles to the implant allows the prosthetic to move naturally.
  • Enhanced stability: The implant provides a secure foundation, mimicking a natural eye socket.
  • Long-term durability: Many implant-retained systems last years, outperforming standard adhesive-based options.
  • Reduced maintenance: Permanent implants eliminate the need for daily glue or constant reattachment.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain hosts world-class specialists like Dr. Ferran Mascaró Zamora at Centro Médico Teknon. He specializes in oculoplastics and orbital surgery. Choosing a surgeon who also handles orbital decompression ensures they understand complex socket geometry. This expertise is vital for maximizing prosthetic movement and preventing the sunken-eye look over time.

Patient Consensus: Many patients appreciate that these implants stay secure like a thick contact lens. They find that preserving muscular connection makes the realism of the prosthetic well worth the procedure.

What is the process of getting an implant in Spain?

Getting an eye implant in Spain involves surgical enucleation followed by immediate insertion of a hydroxyapatite implant. Spanish specialists, such as those at Centro Medico Teknon, reattach eye muscles directly to the implant to ensure natural movement for the future cosmetic prosthesis. The procedure costs $5,300 to $9,500.

  • Surgical approach: Surgeons perform total enucleation and place the hydroxyapatite implant during one session.
  • Muscle reattachment: Extraocular muscles are sutured to the implant for maximum prosthetic mobility.
  • Healing period: A clear conformer is placed post-surgery to maintain socket shape during healing.
  • Prosthetic fitting: A private ocularist custom-crafts the final silicone prosthesis after several months.
  • Long-term care: Professional cleaning is required every 6 months with replacement every 5 years.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While Spain offers high-tier surgical expertise at Hospital Ruber Internacional, the logistics of the cosmetic phase are unique. Ocularists operate privately, separate from hospital ophthalmology departments. Patients should secure a referral early to minimize wait times between surgery and the final prosthetic fitting.

Patient Consensus: Many find the co-payment system for prosthetics helpful, though you must pay the full amount upfront before seeking refunds. Wearing a conformer immediately after surgery is highly recommended for both physical comfort and better aesthetic results.

How long does it take to recover?

Recovery after enucleation with implant insertion in Spain typically requires 3 to 6 months for a full cosmetic result. Initial wound healing completes within 2 to 3 weeks, allowing most patients to resume normal daily activities within 4 to 6 weeks once swelling subsides.

  • Wound healing: Surface tissues generally heal within 2 to 3 weeks after surgery.
  • Activity resumption: Most patients return to work or light routines after 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Tissue integration: Deep tissue stabilization around the orbital implant takes several weeks.
  • Prosthetic fitting: Final cosmetic recovery occurs when fitting the prosthetic eye at 3 to 6 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain’s top specialists like Dr. Ferran Mascaró Zamora at Centro Médico Teknon emphasize that achieving the best aesthetic outcome depends on socket stability. Patients at high-volume centers like Hospital Ruber Internacional benefit from standardized protocols that prioritize this 3-month stabilization period before the custom prosthesis is finalized.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find pain is mild after the first few days and manageable with standard medication. They often highlight the importance of avoiding heavy lifting for the first month to ensure the implant stays perfectly positioned.

Why choose Spain for this procedure?

Spain offers high-quality ophthalmic care for enucleation with implant insertion, combining JCI-accredited infrastructure with experienced oculoplastic surgeons. Patients secure advanced care at $5,300 to $9,500, saving approximately 48% compared to average US costs of $14,300 for similar surgical outcomes.

  • Expert surgeons: Specialists like Dr. Ferran Mascaró Zamora lead dedicated oculoplastic and orbital departments.
  • Accredited facilities: Top centers like Hospital Ruber Internacional maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) standards.
  • Advanced diagnostics: Clinics utilize 3-Tesla MRI and specialized orbital imaging for precise surgical planning.
  • Strategic locations: Major hubs like Madrid and Barcelona provide easy access for international patients.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish ophthalmic centers often prioritize implant-retained prosthetics over adhesive options. While initial surgical costs range up to $9,500, these durable implants offer significantly better long-term value. Data from Hospital Ruber Internacional shows a high surgical volume exceeding 6,000 procedures annually, indicating deep institutional expertise.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that this procedure is vital for treating underlying infections or cancer. They recommend confirming if the clinic provides multi-year durable prosthetics, as these require fewer long-term replacements.
