I am very sorry that I did not seek advice earlier
I turned to Bookimed for help in selecting an endocrinologist for my 16-year-old son. The goal was to get a quality consultation of a European specialist during a New Year's tourist trip to Barcelona. Bookimed staff organized a meeting very quickly. TEKNON Clinic is one of the best in Europe. Therefore, I will not talk about the quality of reception, Everything is at the highest level. In the international department, a Russian-speaking girl manager met us, took us to a doctor, helped with the translation. There was no misunderstanding with the doctor. It is too early to talk about the quality of treatment. But the doctor explained that in Spain they do not use that (the only, according to our doctors) medicine that we took for 5 years (!), Because it only suppresses the hormone, and does not eliminate the root cause. He offered to cancel his appointment for 2 months, pass the necessary tests and forward it to him. After that, he will prescribe the necessary medicine. We also tentatively agreed on a future ON-LINE consultation. I am very sorry that I did not seek advice earlier. In addition, most doctors in Russia suggested removing the thyroid gland. But the doctor at Teknon assured that this was not necessary. Be sure to write a comment after a second consultation and on the results of treatment.

I evaluate the work of doctors for all 5 points and thank you very much for their responsiveness and individual approach, and most importantly - clarity in the diagnosis and the appointment of adequate treatment
Good day! I express gratitude to the clinic in the person of doctors and the department for working with foreign patients. Doctors are real professionals, support for foreigners is also at the highest level (starting with visa support and ending with sending an opinion upon completion of all procedures). But, there is one problem - it is not always possible to completely complete the examination due to the instability of the schedule. In our case, the doctor did not manage to meet with us and prescribe the prescribed examinations in our case because she went on vacation and we found out about it by chance. Thus, we had to return to our country of residence and after that we learned that it is necessary to pass the survey data, which means another trip. Analyzing our situation, I came to the conclusion that it was precisely the inability to change the schedule on the spot that was the reason that we did not finish the examination in one trip. This fact really upset me, but this does not mean in any way that the doctors are not qualified. I evaluate the work of doctors for all 5 points and thank you very much for their responsiveness and individual approach, and most importantly - clarity in the diagnosis and the appointment of adequate treatment.

FAQ about Radioiodine therapy in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How is radioactive iodine administered during radioiodine therapy in Spain?

Radioiodine therapy in Spain is administered orally using I-131 capsules swallowed with water. This non-invasive outpatient or inpatient procedure targets thyroid tissue specifically to treat hyperthyroidism or cancer. Facilities like Centro Médico Teknon in Barcelona follow strict Joint Commission International safety protocols during administration.

  • Administration method: Patients ingest radioactive iodine pills orally in a process lasting only a few minutes.
  • Dosage preparation: Medical teams tailor the specific I-131 dose based on individual blood tests and scans.
  • Preparation phase: Doctors often require a low-iodine diet and pausing anti-thyroid medications before the appointment.
  • Safety standards: Major centers like Hospital Universitario HM Madrid maintain rigorous EFQM quality management certifications.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many countries offer liquid solutions, Spanish clinics like Centro Médico Teknon almost exclusively provide capsules to reduce the risk of spills or inhalation. This approach simplifies the procedure for the 10,000 annual patients at Teknon while ensuring precise dosage. This focus on capsule delivery aligns with high safety ratings seen across the 83 Spanish clinics in the Bookimed network.

Patient Consensus: Patients report the pill is easy to swallow without a medicinal taste. They emphasize the importance of frequent urination and hydration during the first 8 hours to flush residual radiation.

What isolation and radiation-safety measures are required after radioiodine therapy?

Radioiodine therapy requires strict isolation for 2 to 7 days to protect others from radiation in bodily fluids. Patients must maintain a 6-foot distance from people, sleep alone, and avoid contact with children or pregnant individuals for up to 1 month.

  • Distance protocols: Maintain 6 feet from others for the first 3 to 4 days.
  • Sleeping arrangements: Sleep in a separate bed for at least 7 to 10 days.
  • Bodily fluid hygiene: Flush toilets twice and shower daily to wash away water-soluble iodine.
  • Contact restrictions: Avoid kissing or sharing food for 30 days due to saliva contamination.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish oncology centers like Centro Médico Teknon or Clínica Universidad de Navarra often utilize JCI-accredited safety protocols. While standard doses require 2 days of home isolation, higher doses for thyroid cancer often involve 4 days of inpatient hospital monitoring. This ensures radiation levels drop safely before you return to public spaces or travel through airports.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find success using sour candies and heavy hydration to protect their salivary glands. They emphasize moving your bed to an outside wall to avoid exposing neighbors in apartment buildings.

How long do international patients need to plan to stay in Spain for radioiodine therapy?

International patients typically stay in Spain for 7 to 14 days for radioiodine therapy. This duration covers pre-treatment preparation, 3 to 7 days of hospital isolation for high doses, and a post-treatment period to ensure radiation levels are safe for public travel.

  • Hospitalization period: High-dose oncology cases require 3 to 7 days in specialized radiation-shielded rooms.
  • Pre-therapy preparation: Plan for 1 to 2 days for thyroid stimulation checks and diet verification.
  • Post-treatment isolation: Patients often remain in private isolation for 10 to 14 days after discharge.
  • Travel restrictions: Airport security can detect radioactivity for 3 months; clinics provide medical travel cards.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While general radioiodine costs start at $2,200, oncology-specific protocols at JCI-accredited centers like Centro Médico Teknon or Clínica Universidad de Navarra typically range from $4,000 to $7,000. These high-tier Spanish clinics offer specialized International Patient Offices that provide mandatory written medical travel plans to ease airport security transitions.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize confirming the exact isolation duration with the Spanish hospital beforehand. They recommend adding 2 extra days for travel logistics and post-therapy blood work to ensure a smooth return home.

What pre-treatment preparation is required before radioiodine therapy in Spain?

Pre-treatment for radioiodine therapy in Spain requires a strict low-iodine diet for 10 to 14 days to starve thyroid cells of iodine. Clinicians at JCI-accredited centers like Centro Médico Teknon also ensure thyroid-stimulating hormone levels are elevated through synthetic injections or medication withdrawal.

  • Dietary restriction: Maintain a low-iodine diet for 2 weeks before the oral radioactive capsule.
  • TSH elevation: Receive Thyrogen injections or stop levothyroxine for 3 to 4 weeks prior.
  • Iodine avoidance: Skip CT scans with contrast and iodine-containing supplements for several weeks.
  • Mandatory testing: Provide a negative pregnancy test and recent TSH and T4 blood results.
  • Active hydration: Increase water intake 2 days before to protect the urinary system.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish oncology centers like Centro Médico Teknon or Clinica Universidad de Navarra prioritize Thyrogen injections over medication withdrawal. This approach avoids the fatigue of hypothyroidism. It allows patients to maintain their daily routine until the day of radioactive iodine administration.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize using kosher salt for home cooking to avoid hidden iodine. They suggest preparing simple meals like grilled chicken and roasted vegetables to stay compliant easily.

How can international patients find accredited clinics offering radioiodine therapy in Spain?

International patients find accredited radioiodine therapy in Spain by selecting facilities with Joint Commission International (JCI) or European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) credentials. Top centers in Barcelona, Madrid, and Pamplona use specialized nuclear medicine departments to treat hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer using radioactive iodine protocols.

  • Accreditation status: Look for JCI-certified hospitals like Centro Médico Teknon or Clinica Universidad de Navarra.
  • Specialized expertise: Choose centers ranked by Newsweek as World's Best Hospitals for oncology and endocrinology.
  • Treatment costs: Procedures range from $2,200 to $3,800 depending on the specific thyroid condition.
  • Savings potential: Spanish clinics provide professional care with approximately 74% savings compared to US averages.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While major centers in Madrid and Barcelona are popular, Clinica Universidad de Navarra in Pamplona stands out. It was the first in Spain to earn JCI accreditation. It maintains extremely high patient volumes from 70 countries. This institutional experience often leads to more streamlined radiation safety protocols for international arrivals.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the comprehensive support in Spain, including access to specialized psychological services. Many note that high-volume centers manage the isolation period comfortably while providing affordable post-treatment medication.
