How Much Does Artificial pupil surgery Cost in Turkey?

Artificial pupil surgery in Turkey typically costs from $2,200 to $3,800. The final price depends on surgical complexity, iris implant type, and the clinic technology used. Patients save around 67% compared to the US, where this procedure costs $9,000 on average. Standard inclusions often cover pre-operative eye imaging, the surgical procedure, medications, and airport-hotel transfers.

  • Specialist expertise: Procedures with associate professors typically range from $6,000 to $10,000 in Istanbul.
  • Advanced diagnostics: Comprehensive eye exams and specialized imaging add approximately $100 to $220.
  • Combined treatments: Adding glaucoma management or sulcus fixation can increase the total surgical investment.
  • Medical hubs: Most surgeries occur in Istanbul, though Antalya and Izmir serve as major centers.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a specialized eye center like Dunyagoz, which treats 66,000 patients annually, ensures high-volume expertise. At Associate Professor M. Derda Ozer’s practice, prices around $8,000 often include complex sulcus fixation. This provides better value than general hospitals. Look for surgeons with international fellowships from the ICO or Harvard to guarantee premium care standards at Turkish rates.

It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided
It was a very good experience for us, and I will use this service in the future if necessary. All the answers to my questions were given. Everything is very organized. They have their own counter at the airport, where they arranged a transfer for us and brought us comfortably to the hotel. We were accompanied everywhere. The price of the service was as agreed in advance. There were no additional payments. I only spent money on my husband's eye drops at the pharmacy, but they're sold at affordable prices. The hospital is very modern, it's a large complex, there's a university nearby. The hospital has a special department for dealing with foreign clients. We didn't run, we weren't looking for anything, Mustafa was with us all the time and made arrangements for everything himself. There were a few days between the diagnosis and surgery, and we managed to book several tours of Istanbul. It helped us relieve the tension of worrying about the surgery. My husband has an agimatism, he got the best lenses in the world that exist right now. These lenses were made specifically for the parameters of his eye. It's been less than a week since the surgery, but my husband says he can see some things even better than he had with glasses before. The rehabilitation is not over yet, he has to drip eye drops on schedule for a month, take care of eyes, and don't lift heavy things and rub eyes. The doctors have done their job, now a lot depends on how clearly my husband adheres to the doctor's recommendations. It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided.

My biggest shock was that the initial agreement was completely different from the reality. After I arrived, I was forced to accept new prices and couldn’t go to another clinic. I had Botox injections for my forehead and frown lines, and of course it’s still too early to judge the results. That said, the clinic itself was good and the doctor took the time to carefully mark the injection points, which I really appreciated. However, my experience with the staff was extremely poor. One must also take into account the additional costs of accommodation, flights and transport. For this reason, based on this experience, I would not recommend that any patient travel to Turkey for treatment.

The recovery so far is better than expected
If you're considering this procedure, my main advice is to bring a physical card for payment. I used Apple Pay, which had a low transaction limit and forced me to make about 20 separate payments to cover the cost. Medically, everything was straightforward. I had lens replacement in both eyes on the same day, and the recovery so far is better than expected. my doctor, who took the time to explain which technique suited my eyes and was very honest about the realistic vision outcome I could anticipate. I must also say a huge thank you to the night nurse ( mirve ) I think was her name she was outstanding and took good care of me . It was reassuring that there were no additional expenses. The one thing to note is that there was little contact from the clinic after I left, but the core service was solid.
I can’t speak highly enough of the treatment from all staff especially mirve who looked after me through the night she came every hour to do my drops until I asked her to come at 6.00 in morning she gave me an extension number incase I needed anything before six , which I did at 5.00am she immediately came to my room and sorted my issue the operation went perfect and after only two days I can see better than I have in the last 18 years 👌👍👌 thank you everyone

I can wholeheartedly recommend the Memorial Şişli Clinic
I can wholeheartedly recommend the Memorial Şişli Clinic. I underwent a deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) on my left eye, and I now feel better than I had expected. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the coordinating doctor, Sergey, and Dr Abdallah ÖZCAYA for their expertise and responsible approach. I particularly remember how Dr ÖZCAYA personally checked on me after the operation — this gave me confidence and peace of mind. The clinic was always available, and there were no additional costs. A special thank you to the interpreter, Daniela, for her excellent translation and constant help with communication.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Medical Coordinator Serhii Kravetskyi for his prompt arrangements for my treatment at the Memorial Şişli Clinic. To Professor Dr Abdullah ÖZKAYA for his high level of professionalism and the successful keratoplasty operation. To the interpreter, Daniela Tecer, for her attentive support and excellent work.

I am very impressed with the quality and standard of the whole process
Communication was great. I was picked up from the hotel, transfered to the hospital, and accompanied by Adam (translator) through the journey. He knew exactly the intake process and what they would want. He was well organized and very friendly. The consultant spoke English and was very calm, and professional. I had femto iLasik which was without complication. Pre-op my prescription was -7. Day 0 post op, I could still see but with blurry vision. Day 1 post op, my vision is now 20/20. But eyes feel gritty but hopefully will ease in a few days. I am very impressed with the quality and standard of the whole process. I would highly recommend Turkey for medical tourism. It's affordable and a beautiful clean city to visit as well. Stupendous experience.

Being able to see the world clearly really does change the quality of life
I’d like to leave a positive review of the Dünyagöz clinic and Bookimed, the company that helped me find this clinic. First and foremost, I’d like to highlight the high standard of service at the Dünyagöz clinic. Upon arrival, I was promptly met and immediately provided with an interpreter. So there is absolutely no need to worry about the language barrier — both Russian and English are available here. The interpreter accompanies you at every stage: from the initial consultation right through to the operation itself. This is very important, as eye care requires a precise understanding of all your concerns and the doctor’s recommendations. I was also pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and comfort of the wards. All the staff are very friendly, helpful and always ready to assist with any queries. Another definite plus was the full board: breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, so you don’t have to worry about practical matters and can focus entirely on your treatment and recovery. I would like to express my special thanks to Bookimed. Throughout the entire process, you are supported by a personal coordinator who helps organise your trip, answers questions and provides all the necessary details. My coordinator was Anastasia, and I am sincerely grateful to her for her support. She was available practically 24/7 and even helped with matters not directly related to the clinic. It was on her recommendation that I chose Dünyagöz. What’s more, Anastasia herself had previously had her vision corrected at the same clinic, so she was able to share her personal experience. Now we are both delighted with the result and can confidently recommend this clinic to others. If you’ve been thinking about vision correction for a while, there’s no need to be afraid or put off the decision. After the operation, you realise you should have done it much sooner. Being able to see the world clearly really does change the quality of life. I wish everyone good luck, good health and nothing but positive experiences with their new, clear vision!

What really stood out was how my doctor took the time to show me what to expect with each lens type after testing my eyes thoroughly, which helped me confidently choose the multifocal option
What really stood out was how my doctor took the time to show me what to expect with each lens type after testing my eyes thoroughly, which helped me confidently choose the multifocal option. He performed the surgery personally on both of my eyes the same day. My recovery is going about as expected, and the clinic provided a clear aftercare guide. Just be prepared for the other costs. Of course, I had to pay for my flight, a two-week hotel stay, and also a required $150 medical insurance policy on top of the clinic's price.

I recommend bookimed
My husband and I traveled from New Zealand to both get eye lens replacement surgery. From the start we have had print and effient communication. With every question answered. We were picked up from the airport, taken to hotel, then the same day at our request taken to the hospital for our appointment. Two days later we were in having eye surgery again with pick ups and drop offs. We were met at the hospital entrance, by bookimed.com translators and hospital translators they were amazing every day, in every way. The doctors were provisional and onto it, explaining every detail, and answering all our questions. Our procedure went very well and we are very happy with the outcome and how amazing we can see, no longer with glasses or contacts. I recommend bookimed.com to everyone. Vikki

My distance vision is now crystal clear at 20/20, which is a massive change from my previous prescription in the -3 to -6 diopter range
My biggest worry before getting LASIK was the risk of side effects like long-term dry eyes or glare. I can honestly say my recovery has been very straightforward so far. I’ve had no dryness at all, and even better, I haven’t noticed any halos or glare in low light, which was a huge relief for me. My distance vision is now crystal clear at 20/20, which is a massive change from my previous prescription in the -3 to -6 diopter range. Overall, the whole process was solid. Of course, everyone’s experience will vary, and when I was researching beforehand, I saw many people discussing side effects that I personally did not experience at all. I had the LASIK treatment rather than SMILE, so this review is based on my own LASIK experience. Make sure to do all your research beforehand. If your main concern is whether the clinic is good to get the procedure done, then in simple terms, yes, it is. Like any place, there are things outside of the actual surgery that could be improved, but I would recommend looking through reviews carefully and moving forward with what you personally feel comfortable and confident with.
The staff were good, the room provided was also great, and the surgery went very fast and smoothly with no issues at all. Everyone was kind and helpful throughout the experience. The staff who brought the food and checked in were especially nice. There was one individual in particular I’m not sure of his name, but he spoke English and was incredibly sweet, always checking in and asking if everything was okay. He definitely made the whole experience much better and more comfortable.
One area for improvement would be communication, as English seems to be limited mainly to the coordinator and doctor . If you need to ask other staff or reception for help or information, it can sometimes be a little difficult to navigate. I would recommend having a translation app available and making sure you have your in-hospital coordinator’s contact number handy, as following things up through reception or other staff is not easy . There was also a slight issue with payment, so I would recommend having a backup payment method or checking beforehand what to do if the card machine does not work, since payments are handled directly there. This is especially important if you are travelling from abroad, as I travelled from the UK.

The surgeon and the medical team were brilliant and explained everything to me, which put me at ease
My biggest concern was the procedure itself and the potential side effects. Fortunately, the surgeon and the medical team were brilliant and explained everything to me, which put me at ease. It has now been 15 days since my umbilical cord stem cell treatment. To be honest, I haven’t noticed any changes yet, which is to be expected at this early stage. There is still some pain when I touch the injection site. I’ve been sticking to the post-treatment restrictions most of the time, and the clinic itself was good but not entirely modern, which is why I’ve given it four stars. Overall, it was a good experience and now I just need to be patient.

Here, however, they diagnosed my type of uveitis on the very same day, which was a huge relief
What worried me most was the uncertainty and the long search for the causes of my condition. Here, however, they diagnosed my type of uveitis on the very same day, which was a huge relief. The doctor immediately explained the possible triggers, which helped me understand the situation. It’s only been 15 days, and I’m still in the early stages of recovery. The pain in my eyes has eased slightly, as has my sensitivity to light. My visual acuity remains unchanged for now, but I realise that this will take time. The whole clinic team worked very smoothly and professionally, which gave me a sense of calm.

It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again!
Overall, the experience was very much worth. It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again! The cost was so much better than in the US, and I was also able to get the lens I wanted that is not available in the US yet. Other than a false assumption about where my hotel was located, and the drivers having difficulty finding me, the only perimeter went pretty smoothly. I’m happy with the outcome. I would only suggest that there be at least one nurse or medical staff besides the doctor who speaks English. Many more paranoid, or less traveled Americans would have a hard time going through that honestly. I feel the service is very worth iit overall, those are just some recommendations to make the service excellent and a no-brainer for Americans who need medical procedures.

Overall I have to give the bookimed team a top rating
The staff at Bookimed from the initial off-set answered all my questions, queries promptly. I was nervous with feelings swaying about my treatment. Upon arrival in Turkey from the airport transfer onwards, I have got to say all doubts were a contrast as to what I witnessed and to the treatment I received. On the first day the hotel staff were welcoming by the way I stayed local to VMH University Hospital Istanbul Besyol, at a budget I chose the World Point Hotel 700 meters away (Ramada Hotel was even closer.) I'm not arguing with what I paid, hygiene, cleanliness, manners, availability of staff, room, I got and witnessed. The transfer to the Hospital l walked with my translator, who put all my nerves and questions I had to bed, I must say I felt alot better. On arrival I was astounded, the smell of freshness, clean, I had to ask the translator how many floors 9 was the reply, Big, busy different ethnicities different cultures, vast array of people from all parts of the world, I felt comfortable. The level of equipment, the Doctors, staff members would not go amiss in any Country. The treatment I received the interaction which you have with the Doctor was of great effect to me as the knowledge about my treatment gained was instrumental in what was to happen. Overall I have to give the bookimed team a top rating. I would recommend anyone who is thinking of surgery abroad of any kind to get in touch with them, I can assure you, you will not be disappointed. Thank you.

FAQ about Artificial pupil surgery in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the potential risks and complications of artificial pupil surgery?

Potential risks of artificial pupil surgery include glaucoma in up to 33% of patients, chronic uveitis, and corneal damage leading to transplants in 25% of cases. Complications like cataracts and permanent vision loss are significant concerns for cosmetic implants in Turkey.

  • Glaucoma risk: Elevated intraocular pressure affects 27% to 33% of postoperative patients.
  • Inflammatory reactions: Chronic intraocular inflammation or uveitis occurs in 60% of symptomatic cases.
  • Corneal health: Endothelial cell loss causes cloudiness in 20% to 25% of procedures.
  • Device failure: Implant dislocation or subluxation occurs in 10% to 20% of cases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While Turkey offers specialized care at centers like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital, success heavily depends on surgeon volume. Data shows top specialists like Prof. Dr. Ahmet Satici perform 1,000+ operations annually. Choosing high-volume experts reduces the 30% revision rate often seen with less experienced providers.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently report unexpected issues like persistent glare, halos, and chronic dry eye. Many emphasize the need to budget for local follow-up care as international clinics may limit communication if complications arise.

Who is considered a suitable candidate for artificial pupil surgery?

Suitable candidates for artificial pupil surgery include individuals with significant iris defects, such as congenital aniridia, traumatic injury, or albinism-related damage. The procedure addresses debilitating symptoms like photophobia and glare in patients whose iris tissue cannot be repaired with traditional surgical sutures.

  • Clinical indications: Repairs partial or complete absence of the iris causing severe vision distortion.
  • Symptom severity: Targets patients experiencing intense light sensitivity, halos, or decreased contrast sensitivity.
  • Lens requirement: Candidates must have an artificial lens or require concurrent cataract surgery.
  • Exclusion criteria: Unsuitable for patients with uncontrolled glaucoma, active infections, or healthy natural lenses.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many seek this for aesthetics, top Turkish specialists like Prof. Dr. Ahmet Satici, who has performed 20,000 surgeries, prioritize functional restoration. Data shows that JCI-accredited centers in Istanbul often require a trial of prosthetic contact lenses before approving surgery. This ensures the invasive procedure is truly a last resort for light management.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that this surgery is a life-changing solution for chronic glare. Most advise having realistic expectations, noting the implant significantly improves comfort even if it does not restore 20/20 vision.

What clinical and aesthetic benefits does artificial pupil surgery provide?

Artificial pupil surgery restores ocular function and aesthetics for patients with aniridia or iris trauma. Clinical benefits include a 59.7% reduction in light sensitivity and improved contrast. Aesthetic advantages feature custom-painted prosthetics that match the healthy eye's color, restoring a natural appearance and boosting psychological well-being.

  • Light regulation: Reduces debilitating glare and photophobia by approximately 53.1% during daytime.
  • Vision enhancement: Improves uncorrected visual acuity from 20/40 to 20/25 in damaged eyes.
  • Custom appearance: Hand-painted foldable iris replicas match the patient's natural eye color exactly.
  • Surgical versatility: Modern 2 mm incisions allow for secondary implantation after previous trauma repair.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While basic black diaphragm segments are common, Turkey's high-volume centers like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital specialize in custom-foldable iris replicas. These premium implants are tailored to ethnic skin tones and eye colors. Data shows surgeons like Prof. Dr. Ahmet Satici, with over 20,000 procedures, achieve higher aesthetic symmetry than general ophthalmologists. Patients should prioritize clinics offering topography-guided planning to ensure the pinhole effect perfectly aligns with their visual axis.

Patient Consensus: Patients report a dramatic life quality boost, especially the ability to drive at night without glare. Most experience blurred vision for 1–3 days followed by instant relief from light sensitivity.

How is artificial pupil surgery performed, and what techniques are used?

Artificial pupil surgery restores eye function using microsurgical implantation or iris-shaping sutures. Surgeons repair existing tissue through pupilloplasty or insert medical-grade prosthetics like Morcher foldable rings. Turkish clinics utilize specialized techniques including endocapsular fixation, single-pass four-throw (SFT) suturing, and argon laser contraction to achieve natural light regulation.

  • Micro-suture fixation: Surgeons use Siepser knots to close iris defects through 2–3 mm incisions.
  • Artificial iris implantation: Flexible silicone or PMMA rings are folded and inserted via phacoemulsification access.
  • Haptic-based fixation: Devices are secured in the capsular bag or sulcus for long-term stability.
  • Laser-assisted shaping: Argon lasers contract iris tissue to center pupils or enlarge constricted apertures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume Turkish centers often bundle artificial pupil reconstruction with cataract surgery. Data shows surgeons like Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer have performed over 25,000 procedures. This high volume typically leads to better cosmetic symmetry. Choosing clinics with JCI accreditation ensures use of international-standard foldable implants.

Patient Consensus: Patients report initial visual blur and night glare lasting up to 2 weeks. Many recommend confirming the specific fixation method beforehand to ensure long-term implant stability.

How can I avoid scams or ghost surgery for artificial pupil surgery in Turkey?

Avoid ghost surgery by verifying your surgeon is a licensed ophthalmic specialist with a Health Tourism Authorisation Certificate. Secure a written contract naming your doctor. Check they have theatre privileges at JCI-accredited facilities like Memorial Şişli Hospital or Dunyagoz Eye Hospital Istanbul.

  • Surgeon verification: Confirm your surgeon is registered with the Turkish Medical Association (TMA).
  • Credential checks: Look for International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) or European Board (FEBO) certifications.
  • Hospital accreditation: Only book at facilities with JCI or ISO quality management systems.
  • Contract transparency: Your agreement must explicitly name the surgeon, hospital, and implant details.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Single-specialty eye hospitals often provide higher accountability than general clinics. Facilities like Dunyagoz serve 66,000+ patients annually and focus solely on ophthalmology. Choosing a professor such as Dr Ahmet Satici, who has performed 20,000+ procedures, reduces the risk of sub-standard care.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend verifying the surgeon's full name in writing. Confirm that they will be in theatre. Requesting remote telehealth follow-up options before departure provides support once back in Australia.

What expertise and accreditations should I look for in a Turkish artificial pupil surgery clinic?

Select a Turkish ophthalmology clinic with Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. Look for surgeons specialising in complex anterior segment reconstruction. Specialists should have Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO) certification. They also need experience in iris reconstruction, sulcus fixation, or glaucoma surgery for high-precision outcomes.

  • Hospital accreditations: JCI or ISO 9001 certifications show a facility meets global safety standards.
  • Surgeon certifications: FEBO or FICO qualifications show the surgeon has passed rigorous international assessments.
  • Surgical volume: Expert surgeons like Dr Muhammet Derda Ozer have performed 25,000+ ophthalmic procedures.
  • Diagnostics: Top clinics use Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to accurately map iris defects.
  • Support specialities: Facilities with retina and glaucoma departments handle complications like pressure spikes.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Bookimed data shows several Turkish clinics now hold Temos or LEED certifications alongside JCI. Examples include Associate Professor M. Derda Ozer’s practice. These accreditations show a clinic has updated infrastructure and protocols for international patient safety.

Patient Consensus: Find a consultant with reconstructive surgery experience and ask for case examples. Patients in Turkey suggest confirming a formal follow-up plan for managing inflammation and surgical trade-offs.

What is the primary purpose of artificial pupil surgery in Turkey?

Artificial pupil surgery in Turkey restores iris function and helps regulate light entering the eye. Specialists use medical-grade silicone implants or reconstructive suturing to treat aniridia, iris deformities, or ocular trauma. This procedure reduces glare and improves visual clarity for patients with damaged or missing irises.

  • Light regulation: Replaces damaged tissue to control light entry and eliminate debilitating glare.
  • Visual clarity: Improves focus for patients with constantly dilated or non-functional pupils.
  • Aesthetic repair: Restores a natural look to eyes affected by coloboma or injury.
  • Secondary prevention: Helps manage conditions like photophobia that can lead to chronic headaches.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many seek this for aesthetics. However, doctors like Prof. Yusuf Yildirim focus on reconstruction to save sight. Success depends on experience. Turkey has specialists who have performed over 20,000+ eye surgeries. Choosing a single-specialty hospital like Dunyagoz provides access to specific tools for precise implant sizing.

Patient Consensus: Patients find the reconstruction significantly reduces light sensitivity in the bright Turkish sun. Most suggest clarifying if the surgery is functional or cosmetic before travelling.

What is the typical recovery process following artificial pupil surgery in Turkey?

Recovery from artificial pupil surgery in Turkey is generally rapid. Most patients resume normal activities within a few days. The process involves managing swelling and stinging with prescribed eye drops. Vision typically begins to stabilise within 24–48 hours at specialist centres in Istanbul.

  • Early healing: Stinging and watering are normal during the first 72 hours.
  • Activity restrictions: Patients must avoid heavy exercise and eye rubbing for several weeks.
  • Vision stability: Initial improvement is fast, but full visual refinement can take months.
  • Medication protocol: Specialists prescribe specific eye drops to prevent infection and manage inflammation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish eye hospitals often combine artificial pupil reconstruction with femtosecond laser or phacoemulsification. This occurs if cataracts are present. Data shows that specialists like Dr Ahmet Satici have performed 20,000+ procedures. Surgeons are very efficient, often completing complex iris repairs in under 60 minutes.

Patient Consensus: Patients travelling to Turkey report that initial discomfort is manageable with care kits. They highlight the efficiency of Istanbul clinics and the clear post-operative instructions.

Why is Turkey often considered for artificial pupil surgery by international patients?

International patients choose Turkey for artificial pupil surgery due to many JCI-accredited facilities. Their ophthalmologists have intensive surgical experience. This complex procedure addresses iris defects using reconstructive techniques at private centres in Istanbul. These clinics frequently serve Australian, European, and American patients.

  • Accredited facilities: Memorial Şişli Hospital and Liv Hospital Ulus maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) standards.
  • Expert surgical volume: Surgeons like Dr Ahmet Satici have performed over 20,000 ophthalmic operations.
  • Specialised techniques: Clinics use femtosecond lasers and ocular surface reconstruction for precise pupillary repairs.
  • Immediate scheduling: Patients avoid long public wait times with almost immediate surgical dates.
  • Cost efficiency: Surgery ranges from $2,200 to $3,800, saving up to 67% vs Australia.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkey has 390 clinics specialising in this specific procedure. Single-specialty centres like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital Istanbul Etiler treat 66,000 patients annually. Large patient numbers allow Turkish specialists to handle complex reconstructive cases. General surgeons elsewhere may see such cases only once a year.

Patient Consensus: Patients value Turkey for fast access to specialists and smooth medical tourism logistics. They recommend confirming telehealth follow-up before returning home. Patients should also seek written instructions for their local Australian ophthalmologist.
