How Much Does Glaucoma surgery Cost in Turkey?

Glaucoma surgery in Turkey typically costs from $1,800 to $2,800. Final pricing depends on the surgical technique, such as trabeculectomy or drainage implants, and the clinic city. Patients save around 76% compared to the United States, where the average price is $9,500. Most Turkish packages include preoperative tests, ophthalmologist consultations, local anesthesia, and follow-up examinations.

  • Trabeculectomy: Often serves as the standard surgical approach for creating new drainage channels.
  • Drainage implants: Usually costs more than standard surgery due to the use of artificial shunts.
  • Minimally invasive techniques: Often carry a premium for advanced equipment like iStent or specialized lasers.
  • Geographic location: Medical hubs include Istanbul and Antalya, with Istanbul offering the highest clinic density.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a specialist with high surgical volumes yields the best value in Turkey. For example, Associate Professor Muhammet Derda Ozer has performed over 25,000 eye surgeries. His comprehensive packages at approximately $4,000 include four days of hotel stay and advanced diagnostics like Heidelberg retinal tomography. Alternatively, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Satici offers 33 years of experience with packages starting around $2,000 at Central Hospital Etiler.

It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided
It was a very good experience for us, and I will use this service in the future if necessary. All the answers to my questions were given. Everything is very organized. They have their own counter at the airport, where they arranged a transfer for us and brought us comfortably to the hotel. We were accompanied everywhere. The price of the service was as agreed in advance. There were no additional payments. I only spent money on my husband's eye drops at the pharmacy, but they're sold at affordable prices. The hospital is very modern, it's a large complex, there's a university nearby. The hospital has a special department for dealing with foreign clients. We didn't run, we weren't looking for anything, Mustafa was with us all the time and made arrangements for everything himself. There were a few days between the diagnosis and surgery, and we managed to book several tours of Istanbul. It helped us relieve the tension of worrying about the surgery. My husband has an agimatism, he got the best lenses in the world that exist right now. These lenses were made specifically for the parameters of his eye. It's been less than a week since the surgery, but my husband says he can see some things even better than he had with glasses before. The rehabilitation is not over yet, he has to drip eye drops on schedule for a month, take care of eyes, and don't lift heavy things and rub eyes. The doctors have done their job, now a lot depends on how clearly my husband adheres to the doctor's recommendations. It was a very good experience for us and we are grateful for the treatment provided.

The recovery so far is better than expected
If you're considering this procedure, my main advice is to bring a physical card for payment. I used Apple Pay, which had a low transaction limit and forced me to make about 20 separate payments to cover the cost. Medically, everything was straightforward. I had lens replacement in both eyes on the same day, and the recovery so far is better than expected. my doctor, who took the time to explain which technique suited my eyes and was very honest about the realistic vision outcome I could anticipate. I must also say a huge thank you to the night nurse ( mirve ) I think was her name she was outstanding and took good care of me . It was reassuring that there were no additional expenses. The one thing to note is that there was little contact from the clinic after I left, but the core service was solid.
I can’t speak highly enough of the treatment from all staff especially mirve who looked after me through the night she came every hour to do my drops until I asked her to come at 6.00 in morning she gave me an extension number incase I needed anything before six , which I did at 5.00am she immediately came to my room and sorted my issue the operation went perfect and after only two days I can see better than I have in the last 18 years 👌👍👌 thank you everyone

Being able to see the world clearly really does change the quality of life
I’d like to leave a positive review of the Dünyagöz clinic and Bookimed, the company that helped me find this clinic. First and foremost, I’d like to highlight the high standard of service at the Dünyagöz clinic. Upon arrival, I was promptly met and immediately provided with an interpreter. So there is absolutely no need to worry about the language barrier — both Russian and English are available here. The interpreter accompanies you at every stage: from the initial consultation right through to the operation itself. This is very important, as eye care requires a precise understanding of all your concerns and the doctor’s recommendations. I was also pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and comfort of the wards. All the staff are very friendly, helpful and always ready to assist with any queries. Another definite plus was the full board: breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, so you don’t have to worry about practical matters and can focus entirely on your treatment and recovery. I would like to express my special thanks to Bookimed. Throughout the entire process, you are supported by a personal coordinator who helps organise your trip, answers questions and provides all the necessary details. My coordinator was Anastasia, and I am sincerely grateful to her for her support. She was available practically 24/7 and even helped with matters not directly related to the clinic. It was on her recommendation that I chose Dünyagöz. What’s more, Anastasia herself had previously had her vision corrected at the same clinic, so she was able to share her personal experience. Now we are both delighted with the result and can confidently recommend this clinic to others. If you’ve been thinking about vision correction for a while, there’s no need to be afraid or put off the decision. After the operation, you realise you should have done it much sooner. Being able to see the world clearly really does change the quality of life. I wish everyone good luck, good health and nothing but positive experiences with their new, clear vision!

I am very impressed with the quality and standard of the whole process
Communication was great. I was picked up from the hotel, transfered to the hospital, and accompanied by Adam (translator) through the journey. He knew exactly the intake process and what they would want. He was well organized and very friendly. The consultant spoke English and was very calm, and professional. I had femto iLasik which was without complication. Pre-op my prescription was -7. Day 0 post op, I could still see but with blurry vision. Day 1 post op, my vision is now 20/20. But eyes feel gritty but hopefully will ease in a few days. I am very impressed with the quality and standard of the whole process. I would highly recommend Turkey for medical tourism. It's affordable and a beautiful clean city to visit as well. Stupendous experience.

What really stood out was how my doctor took the time to show me what to expect with each lens type after testing my eyes thoroughly, which helped me confidently choose the multifocal option
What really stood out was how my doctor took the time to show me what to expect with each lens type after testing my eyes thoroughly, which helped me confidently choose the multifocal option. He performed the surgery personally on both of my eyes the same day. My recovery is going about as expected, and the clinic provided a clear aftercare guide. Just be prepared for the other costs. Of course, I had to pay for my flight, a two-week hotel stay, and also a required $150 medical insurance policy on top of the clinic's price.

My distance vision is now crystal clear at 20/20, which is a massive change from my previous prescription in the -3 to -6 diopter range
My biggest worry before getting LASIK was the risk of side effects like long-term dry eyes or glare. I can honestly say my recovery has been very straightforward so far. I’ve had no dryness at all, and even better, I haven’t noticed any halos or glare in low light, which was a huge relief for me. My distance vision is now crystal clear at 20/20, which is a massive change from my previous prescription in the -3 to -6 diopter range. Overall, the whole process was solid. Of course, everyone’s experience will vary, and when I was researching beforehand, I saw many people discussing side effects that I personally did not experience at all. I had the LASIK treatment rather than SMILE, so this review is based on my own LASIK experience. Make sure to do all your research beforehand. If your main concern is whether the clinic is good to get the procedure done, then in simple terms, yes, it is. Like any place, there are things outside of the actual surgery that could be improved, but I would recommend looking through reviews carefully and moving forward with what you personally feel comfortable and confident with.
The staff were good, the room provided was also great, and the surgery went very fast and smoothly with no issues at all. Everyone was kind and helpful throughout the experience. The staff who brought the food and checked in were especially nice. There was one individual in particular I’m not sure of his name, but he spoke English and was incredibly sweet, always checking in and asking if everything was okay. He definitely made the whole experience much better and more comfortable.
One area for improvement would be communication, as English seems to be limited mainly to the coordinator and doctor . If you need to ask other staff or reception for help or information, it can sometimes be a little difficult to navigate. I would recommend having a translation app available and making sure you have your in-hospital coordinator’s contact number handy, as following things up through reception or other staff is not easy . There was also a slight issue with payment, so I would recommend having a backup payment method or checking beforehand what to do if the card machine does not work, since payments are handled directly there. This is especially important if you are travelling from abroad, as I travelled from the UK.

I recommend bookimed
My husband and I traveled from New Zealand to both get eye lens replacement surgery. From the start we have had print and effient communication. With every question answered. We were picked up from the airport, taken to hotel, then the same day at our request taken to the hospital for our appointment. Two days later we were in having eye surgery again with pick ups and drop offs. We were met at the hospital entrance, by bookimed.com translators and hospital translators they were amazing every day, in every way. The doctors were provisional and onto it, explaining every detail, and answering all our questions. Our procedure went very well and we are very happy with the outcome and how amazing we can see, no longer with glasses or contacts. I recommend bookimed.com to everyone. Vikki

The surgeon and the medical team were brilliant and explained everything to me, which put me at ease
My biggest concern was the procedure itself and the potential side effects. Fortunately, the surgeon and the medical team were brilliant and explained everything to me, which put me at ease. It has now been 15 days since my umbilical cord stem cell treatment. To be honest, I haven’t noticed any changes yet, which is to be expected at this early stage. There is still some pain when I touch the injection site. I’ve been sticking to the post-treatment restrictions most of the time, and the clinic itself was good but not entirely modern, which is why I’ve given it four stars. Overall, it was a good experience and now I just need to be patient.

Here, however, they diagnosed my type of uveitis on the very same day, which was a huge relief
What worried me most was the uncertainty and the long search for the causes of my condition. Here, however, they diagnosed my type of uveitis on the very same day, which was a huge relief. The doctor immediately explained the possible triggers, which helped me understand the situation. It’s only been 15 days, and I’m still in the early stages of recovery. The pain in my eyes has eased slightly, as has my sensitivity to light. My visual acuity remains unchanged for now, but I realise that this will take time. The whole clinic team worked very smoothly and professionally, which gave me a sense of calm.

I highly recommend this clinic
My entire trip to Istanbul was well organised from the very start: the transfer from the airport to the clinic, the interpreter, and the competence of the staff and the doctor. I really appreciated that the doctor calmly and without any fuss explained what was going to be done and which procedure would be best for me. The interpreter was also very good; overall, the examination and operation went quickly (and painlessly). I highly recommend this clinic. For the money, you get good service and, above all, a high-quality operation. Thank you 🤩
The clinic is excellent – I highly recommend it. The staff take great care of their patients. The doctor is highly competent and provided a great deal of information about the treatment and rehabilitation. After a painless operation, my vision had already improved by the evening. A week has now passed and I am very satisfied; I’ve had no problems at all during this time, my vision is good and I’m happy. Thank you for everything))

It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again!
Overall, the experience was very much worth. It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again! The cost was so much better than in the US, and I was also able to get the lens I wanted that is not available in the US yet. Other than a false assumption about where my hotel was located, and the drivers having difficulty finding me, the only perimeter went pretty smoothly. I’m happy with the outcome. I would only suggest that there be at least one nurse or medical staff besides the doctor who speaks English. Many more paranoid, or less traveled Americans would have a hard time going through that honestly. I feel the service is very worth iit overall, those are just some recommendations to make the service excellent and a no-brainer for Americans who need medical procedures.

The doctor who performed my surgery, Alperen Koç, was outstanding
My Experience with Bookimed and VM Medical Park Hospital in Istanbul I recently had surgery in Turkey, and I must say, my coordinator Olya was an incredible professional. She was with me every step of the way, always available 24/7, a true angel! Thanks to her, I chose this hospital and Turkey instead of the Czech Republic. Olya’s support was crucial in my decision, and I’m forever grateful to her. Special thanks to our guide Said, who was always available, no matter the time of day or night. He helped resolve every issue between me and the clinic, providing a smooth experience throughout the process. The doctor who performed my surgery, Alperen Koç, was outstanding. From the initial consultation to the operation itself, everything went smoothly, quickly, and painlessly. He’s truly a high-level professional who’s there to treat patients rather than make money off them. I deeply appreciate all of his care and expertise. A week has passed since the surgery, and I feel good, though my vision hasn’t fully returned yet. However, this is normal, and I’m confident that it will improve over time. I can confidently recommend Bookimed and VM Medical Park Hospital in Istanbul. Cons: The main downside of my experience was with the hospital’s billing department. They requested payment in cash, but we were not informed about this before traveling to Turkey. If you want to pay by card, they charge a 20% commission, which is an unreasonably high fee. I’d also like to mention someone named Timur (I don’t remember his last name). In front of patients, he was speaking in Russian with a female colleague, assuming we didn’t understand the language. They said something like, “People are so stupid; it’s hard to work with such dumb people.” This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable in the presence of patients. Such conversations seriously undermine the clinic’s reputation and are inappropriate in a professional healthcare setting. Therefore, I strongly advise anyone planning a visit to clarify all financial and organizational details
About Bookimed service
My experience with Bookimed was incredibly positive. From the moment I reached out, my coordinator Olya provided exceptional support, always available and guiding me through every step. The process of selecting the clinic and arranging everything was smooth and well-organized, thanks to her. I highly recommend their services for anyone seeking medical care abroad.

Overall I have to give the bookimed team a top rating
The staff at Bookimed from the initial off-set answered all my questions, queries promptly. I was nervous with feelings swaying about my treatment. Upon arrival in Turkey from the airport transfer onwards, I have got to say all doubts were a contrast as to what I witnessed and to the treatment I received. On the first day the hotel staff were welcoming by the way I stayed local to VMH University Hospital Istanbul Besyol, at a budget I chose the World Point Hotel 700 meters away (Ramada Hotel was even closer.) I'm not arguing with what I paid, hygiene, cleanliness, manners, availability of staff, room, I got and witnessed. The transfer to the Hospital l walked with my translator, who put all my nerves and questions I had to bed, I must say I felt alot better. On arrival I was astounded, the smell of freshness, clean, I had to ask the translator how many floors 9 was the reply, Big, busy different ethnicities different cultures, vast array of people from all parts of the world, I felt comfortable. The level of equipment, the Doctors, staff members would not go amiss in any Country. The treatment I received the interaction which you have with the Doctor was of great effect to me as the knowledge about my treatment gained was instrumental in what was to happen. Overall I have to give the bookimed team a top rating. I would recommend anyone who is thinking of surgery abroad of any kind to get in touch with them, I can assure you, you will not be disappointed. Thank you.

FAQ about Glaucoma surgery in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Which hospitals in Turkey are best known for glaucoma surgery?

The best hospitals for glaucoma surgery in Turkey include Dunyagoz Eye Hospital, Anadolu Saglik Merkezi, and Hisar Intercontinental Hospital. These JCI-accredited centers specialize in advanced techniques like Ahmed valve implantation and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) with board-certified surgeons in Istanbul and Ankara.

  • Dunyagoz Eye Hospital: Turkey largest dedicated eye network performing complex Ahmed valve and Seton implants.
  • Anadolu Saglik Merkezi: Johns Hopkins-affiliated center following American standards for advanced trabeculectomy procedures.
  • Associate Professor Ozer: JCI-accredited specialist center serving 2,000 international patients annually with advanced retinal tomography.
  • Hisar Intercontinental Hospital: Offers comprehensive glaucoma management including Argon laser treatments within a multidisciplinary facility.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patient data indicates that choosing a surgeon with a dedicated glaucoma fellowship significantly impacts long-term success. While many clinics offer general eye surgery, specialists like Prof. Dr. Ali Riza Cenk Celebi, who completed a Harvard glaucoma fellowship, utilize specific techniques like occlusive diodes that are unavailable at smaller clinics. Prioritizing these university-affiliated experts over generalist providers ensures more precise pressure management.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize prioritizing surgeon credentials over the hospital name and suggest arranging virtual consultations before traveling. Many recommend allowing 3 months for post-operative pressure checks to ensure the best long-term outcome.

What are the success rates for glaucoma surgery in Turkey?

Glaucoma surgery success rates in Turkey range from 80% to 90% for primary procedures, aligning with global clinical standards. Outcomes vary by technique, with trabeculectomy showing up to 92% success at 12 months, while minimally invasive goniotomy maintains 85.2% effectiveness over 24 months.

  • Procedure efficacy: Trabeculectomy provides 70% to 90% long-term intraocular pressure control.
  • Device success: Ahmed glaucoma valves achieve 87.8% success rates for complex cases.
  • Laser outcomes: Selective laser trabeculoplasty reduces eye pressure by 20% to 30% initially.
  • Surgeon expertise: Top specialists like Professor Ahmet Satici have performed 20,000+ eye surgeries.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High success rates at centers like Dunyagoz often stem from massive patient volumes, reaching 66,000 patients annually. While technical success is high, the most durable results come from surgeons with international fellowships. Professors like Ali Riza Cenk Celebi, who completed a Harvard glaucoma fellowship, offer specialized expertise in complex valve implantations.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find that matching global success rates depends on early-stage intervention and consistent local monitoring. Experts recommend choosing English-speaking doctors to ensure clear communication regarding the typical 10% to 20% risk of follow-up revisions.

Which hospitals/clinics are most reputable for glaucoma surgery in Turkey?

Reputable glaucoma clinics in Turkey include JCI-accredited centers like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital Group, Hisar Intercontinental Hospital, and Medipol University Hospital. These facilities specialize in advanced treatments including Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS), Ahmed valve North implantation, and trabeculectomy performed by internationally fellowship-trained professors.

  • Surgeon expertise: Prof. Ahmet Satici has performed over 20,000 successful ophthalmic surgeries.
  • Clinical volume: Dunyagoz Altunizade treats 62,000 patients annually with specialized 24/7 eye care.
  • Academic credentials: Prof. Yusuf Yildirim and Prof. Ali Riza Cenk Celebi hold Harvard fellowships.
  • Technological access: Top clinics utilize selective laser trabeculoplasty and micro-invasive glaucoma drainage devices.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data reveals that surgeon-specific credentials matter more than hospital brands for glaucoma. How long does full recovery from glaucoma surgery take?

Full recovery from glaucoma surgery typically requires 3 to 6 weeks for initial tissue healing, while complete vision stabilization often takes 6 to 12 months. Timelines vary by technique, with minimally invasive procedures offering faster primary recovery compared to traditional trabeculectomy or tube shunt insertions.

  • Initial healing phase: Most patients return to daily routines 1 to 4 weeks after surgery.
  • Vision stabilization: Complete visual clarity and pressure stabilization often require 6 to 12 months.
  • Post-operative restrictions: Avoid heavy lifting and bending for 2 to 4 weeks to protect eyes.
  • Monitoring schedule: Expect weekly eye pressure checks during the first month to ensure proper drainage.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish eye centers like Dunyagoz Hospital process over 60,000 patients annually, creating a high-volume environment for complex trabeculectomies. Data shows surgeons like Muhammet Derda Ozer, with 25,000 procedures completed, emphasize that while physical healing is fast, steroid drops often cause temporary blurriness for several months.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report feeling mostly normal by month 2, though persistent fuzziness is common. Practical advice often includes planning 2 weeks off work and preparing for a year of medicinal eye drops.

How do I ensure the safety and quality of a clinic or surgeon for glaucoma surgery in Turkey?

Safety and quality for glaucoma surgery in Turkey are best managed by selecting JCI-accredited hospitals. You should choose surgeons with international subspeciality training. Specialists like Professor Ali Riza Cenk Celebi at Istinye University Liv Hospital Topkapi hold Harvard fellowships. They also hold certifications from the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO).

  • Hospital accreditations: JCI and ISO certifications verify clinics meet global safety and quality standards.
  • Surgeon subspecialisation: Select ophthalmologists with dedicated glaucoma fellowships from institutions like Harvard or ICO.
  • Clinical volume: High-capacity networks like Dunyagoz Eye Hospital treat over 60,000 patients annually.
  • Technology: Check that clinics use Heidelberg retinal tomography and OCT for precise surgical planning.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Look for surgeons holding the Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO) title. This qualification shows the specialist has passed rigorous standardised exams recognised across Europe. Professors like Yusuf Yildirim at Medipol Acibadem District Hospital maintain this credential. He has performed 10,000+ surgeries, which helps reduce the risk of post-operative pressure spikes.

Patient Consensus: Patients value clinics in Turkey that provide Heidelberg tomography and post-operative medications. These are often included in one fixed-price package. Many appreciate that surgeons have decades of experience and memberships in international boards.

What are the typical success rates for glaucoma surgery performed in Turkey?

Glaucoma surgery in Turkey typically yields success rates between 85% and 90% for primary procedures. These results come from techniques like trabeculectomy, which maintains 70%–90% long-term pressure control. Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) also shows an 85.2% effectiveness rate over 24 months.

  • Technique variety: Clinics offer trabeculectomy, Ahmed valve implants, and MIGS to manage eye pressure.
  • Modern technology: Surgeons use optical coherence tomography (OCT) and corneal tomography for precise diagnosis.
  • Clinical experience: Specialists such as Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer have performed 25,000+ eye surgeries.
  • International standards: Facilities like Dunyagoz and Hisar Hospital hold JCI and ISO accreditations.
  • Specialist expertise: Surgeons often hold fellowships from institutions like Harvard or the University of Kansas.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While initial success is high, lasting results depend on surgical volume. Clinical data shows that leading Turkish eye hospitals serve over 60,000 patients annually. This volume allows surgeons to master complex valve implantations. These procedures often achieve 87.8% success in difficult cases.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey suggest confirming how success is measured. This might include reduced medication or stable vision. They value remote follow-up options to manage recovery after returning to Australia.

What types of glaucoma surgery procedures are available to patients travelling to Turkey?

Patients travelling to Turkey have access to modern glaucoma surgeries. These include trabeculoplasty, trabeculectomy, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). Specialist clinics in Istanbul and Antalya use drainage implants like Ahmed and Seton valves. These often cost 58% less than the $5,500 average in Australia.

  • Filtering surgery: Trabeculectomy creates new drainage channels to reduce intraocular pressure.
  • Drainage implants: Surgeons place Ahmed or Seton valves for complex or resistant glaucoma.
  • MIGS techniques: Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery offers shorter recovery for mild to moderate cases.
  • Laser treatments: Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) provides a non-surgical first-line pressure management option.
