How Much Does Ocular oncology surgery Cost in Turkey?

Ocular oncology surgery in Turkey typically costs from $10,500 to $16,000. The final price depends on the tumor type, surgical technique, and clinical complexity of the case. In the US, similar procedures cost around $45,000 on average. Patients save around 70% compared to US prices. These costs generally include preoperative diagnostics, the surgical intervention, and initial post-operative monitoring.

  • Brachytherapy: Typically costs around $18,850 and usually involves a 6-10 day hospital stay.
  • High-complexity cases: Treatment for advanced melanoma or retinoblastoma can reach $20,000 to $80,000.
  • Diagnostic imaging: Specialized ocular CT or ultrasound scans generally add $500 to $900.
  • Specialist consultations: Evaluation by an expert ocular oncologist typically adds $100 to $200.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a specialized center in Istanbul or Antalya provides access to high-volume experts. Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer has performed over 25,000 procedures, offering significant experience for complex cases. While premium clinics may have higher upfront fees, they often include necessary extras like molecular diagnostics. It was the right choice
What worried me most was the uncertainty and what the treatment plan would be. But my fears were put to rest after the very first consultation. The doctor was very attentive and explained everything in detail and calmly, which immediately put me at ease. I really appreciate that approach. All the staff at the clinic were responsive and supportive at every stage. The clinic itself made a good impression; everything is well organised. I am currently in the recovery phase and feel much calmer, having a clear understanding of the next steps. It was the right choice.

The surgeon was excellent
What surprised me most about my basalioma treatment wasn't the procedure itself, but the detailed skin examination I received. The surgeon was excellent. He made sure all removal options were discussed clearly, which was reassuring since I already had my diagnosis before arriving. Right now, the treated area is healing very well. While the medical care was superb and the clinic facilities are great, the administrative staff seemed a bit disorganized, which was the only downside. Despite that, based on the surgeon’s work, it’s a place I would suggest to others.
My Bookimed coordinator was highly skilled, had the passion and patience for her work and that translated to the numerous array of options provided to me to choose from based on my budget during the entire process. She interacted with me 24/7 just for us to have solution within my schedule. All information (proforma, visa assistance, travel guidance and estimated personal expenses) for the entire treatment were on point and I encourage all manner of persons seeking medical treatment abroad to choose Bookimed as their medical tourism partner.
1. Interpreter only come when the patient calls for his services and that is only during the day. If the interpreter can also support beyond the interactions with the specialist. 2. Airport and Internal movement are left to the patient to handle which can sometimes be a major challenge for some category of patients and given the language barrier. 3. Hospital discharges are very strict even if you the patient feels he/she need additional day(s) to be fit for a return to the hotel to continue the recovery.

The doctor and all the staff have been very attentive and professional, which gives me confidence that I made the right choice of clinic and treatment process
My main concern before starting treatment was how my body would react to the drug. I’m undergoing a course of Keytruda immunotherapy for kidney cancer, receiving an infusion every three weeks. Yes, I have experienced some side effects. These are mainly digestive issues, and I feel a little more tired. Of course, I am still concerned that these might get worse over time. But I must say that the doctor and all the staff have been very attentive and professional, which gives me confidence that I made the right choice of clinic and treatment process.

When friends ask if I would suggest this clinic to them, my answer is a 10
My biggest worry was finding a surgeon and team I could completely trust for this personal procedure. That concern disappeared quickly. From the first consultation, the surgeon was professional and the staff were consistently kind, which made the whole process feel secure and well-managed. I'm still in the early stages of healing, but the level of care has been excellent. Everything was clear. When friends ask if I would suggest this clinic to them, my answer is a 10. The support has been fantastic.
Coordinator stayed in touch .The clinic exceeded expectations.I wanted to thank Dr. Baris Nuhoglu and his assistant, who took impeccable care of me. They listened to me and resolved a problem that was very serious and causing me discomfort. On May 19th, they gave me a new birth with professionalism, seriousness, and empathy.I have e big gratitude and deep respect to Dr. Baris and his team, and I wish to return in a few months for a check-up and, who knows, maybe for another new treatment.😁😉👍

The surgeon and all the staff at the clinic were highly professional and competent throughout my experience
My biggest concern before the operation was the recovery period, but now, 15 days after the prosthetic testicle implant surgery, I can say that things are going as expected. I received a small prosthesis measuring 3.5 cm; although I’m not sure of the brand, I’m satisfied with it. The surgeon and all the staff at the clinic were highly professional and competent throughout my experience. Everything went well. The recovery period is going well and without any problems so far.
The service was excellent, and the check-in and check-out were a real treat
No, I'm happy with the service and the performance

Thank Allah that we met him and he did a good surgery
Many thanks to Dr Bora Basharan and Alisher Durdiev! Diagnosis: carcinoma on the tongue. Alisher was very helpful with the choice and full support during the treatment. He gave us confidence in choosing Dr Bora Basharan by telling us about his professionalism and humanity. The most important thing for Alisher was the patient's health and to organise the diagnosis/surgery so that the patient gets the best results. We are very happy about this. We could not decide on the treatment (we were waiting for answers from South Korea) and Alisher did not give up to provide us with doctor's answers, answer our many questions and help with organisation. His ability to speak excellent Russian helped a lot in communication. The first meeting organised by Alisher went well. The doctor explained everything about the surgery and gave us peace of mind due to his experience as a highly specialised ENT surgeon in oncology. The operation went well and the follow up health checks. The recovery is good. We read many positive reviews online about Dr Bor Basharan which gave us more confidence. The reviews are true. After the surgery we were given a room with excellent food and the recovery was good. Thank Allah that we met Alisher and Dr Bora Basharan, for his golden hands, good surgery and organisation. Thank you very much again! Good health to all!

Honestly, I'm in awe from this experience
The hospital was fantastic, room was private, with all required amenities, cafe - lovely, everything was beautiful and clean. Staff were just so accommodating, my Doctor was knowledgeable, explained the procedure in detail. Honestly, I'm in awe from this experience. And even though I was coming in with a slight fear and a tiny panic attack, there was really no need to worry, everything is on a highest level! Thanks to all!
Translators were top notch! Everything was amazing, I can't select just one thing.
Had issue with payment, it kept getting rejected and due to this I wasn't admitted right away. But once payment went through, all services followed smoothly.

My care was very good from start to finish. As soon as I arrived at the hospital, I was greeted by my interpreter and team. They were very friendly, put me at ease and explained what would happen and when. I had checks done and blood taken etc and met the consultant. He was absolutely lovely and again explained the whole procedure. I also met with the Anaesthetist. My procedure was completed and the care was fantastic from all the staff involved. The room and hospital were great. I felt like we had VIP treatment. The Hotel was also nice and everything runs like clockwork. Thanks to all the team but, especially to Ishmeal, Senna and Doctor Ozturk.

But I really liked the Bukimed service - they helped, supported, organised everything in the best possible way
There are certain issues with the hospital, in particular, the staff who are in no hurry and we had to spend the whole day in the hospital instead of a few hours - we waited, waited, and waited again..... But I really liked the Bukimed service - they helped, supported, organised everything in the best possible way. Thank you.
Overall, the hospital is good
Perhaps it's due to a different mentality, but we didn't really like waiting endlessly - no procedure or appointment started on time, no one is in a hurry and no one appreciates other people's time.

Excellent clinic, attentive and meticulous (in a good sense) doctors
Bookimed staff and interpreters accompanied us every step of the way, we got answers to all our questions. Comfortable room for the patient and the attendant (in our case) Excellent clinic, attentive and meticulous (in a good sense) doctors. The medical staff also, put all the drips, served and made all the analyses on schedule. All promptly and without unnecessary questions. Tasty and nourishing food was provided for both the patient and the attendant. On the territory of the hospital is a beautiful small park for walking, as well as in the clinic itself there are many places for rest and waiting The clinic met all expectations and costs
What I liked most was the competence and attentiveness of the doctors

FAQ about Ocular oncology surgery in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Which are the top-rated hospitals for eye cancer treatment in Turkey?

Top-rated hospitals for eye cancer in Turkey include Memorial Şişli Hospital, Anadolu Medical Center, and Dunyagoz Eye Hospital. These facilities offer advanced ocular oncology treatments like radioactive plaque brachytherapy and intra-arterial chemotherapy, maintaining international safety standards through JCI and OECI accreditations.

  • Memorial Şişli Hospital: First JCI-accredited Turkish facility specializing in selective intra-arterial chemotherapy for tumors.
  • Anadolu Medical Center: Affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medicine and first OECI-accredited oncology center in Turkey.
  • Dunyagoz Eye Hospital: High-volume center performing over 1,100 pediatric retinoblastoma procedures with ISO 9001 certification.
  • DERDA SAGLIK HIZMETLERI: Specialized ophthalmology clinic led by surgeons with Wills Eye Institute ocular oncology training.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many general hospitals offer oncology, selecting a single-specialty center like DERDA SAGLIK HIZMETLERI or Dunyagoz often provides higher surgical precision. Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer, for instance, has performed over 25,000 procedures. This high volume is a critical quality indicator for rare ocular tumors where surgical experience directly impacts eye-sparing success rates.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of using medical translators during consultations to ensure clear communication. Many recommend coordinating post-operative monitoring with a local oncologist before traveling to ensure seamless long-term follow-up care.

Is it safe to have ocular oncology surgery in Turkey?

Ocular oncology surgery in Turkey is safe when performed at JCI-accredited centers by fellowship-trained specialists. Leading facilities like Memorial Şişli Hospital and Hisar Hospital Intercontinental utilize multidisciplinary teams and advanced technology, maintaining safety standards comparable to the US and Europe while offering significant cost savings.

  • Surgeon credentials: Specialists like Dr. Ali Riza Cenk Celebi hold European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO) certification.
  • Hospital accreditation: Memorial Şişli Hospital was the first in Turkey to earn JCI accreditation for safety.
  • Experience volume: Top-tier surgeons in Istanbul have performed over 25,000 successful ophthalmological and oncology procedures.
  • Affordable care: Procedures cost $10,500 to $16,000, which is 70% less than US averages.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that the highest success rates for niche eye cancers occur at multidisciplinary centers rather than general clinics. Clinics like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental, which served over 500,000 patients annually, integrate oncology and ophthalmology departments. This collaboration is vital for complex cases like uveal melanoma to ensure both tumor removal and vision preservation.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of securing digital pathology reports and full medical slides before returning home. While they praise the high-tech facilities, they advise others to verify that the pathology department specializes specifically in ocular tissues for accurate long-term monitoring.

Who are the top specialists for ocular oncology surgery in Turkey?

Top ocular oncology specialists in Turkey include Associate Professor Muhammet Derda Ozer and Professor Ali Riza Cenk Celebi, who hold prestigious International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) and European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO) certifications. These surgeons operate in JCI-accredited facilities in Istanbul, focusing on complex eye cancers, orbital tumors, and advanced globe-sparing therapies.

  • Professor Muhammet Derda Ozer: Specialized training at Wills Eye Institute with over 25,000 procedures performed.
  • Professor Ali Riza Cenk Celebi: Harvard-trained specialist at Liv Hospital focusing on complex orbital exenteration and enucleation.
  • Professor Yusuf Yildirim: Expert in ocular surface reconstruction and oncology at Medipol Acibadem District Hospital.
  • Specialized facilities: Memorial Sisli Hospital and Hisar Hospital provide multi-disciplinary oncology care with JCI accreditation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that choosing a specialist within a large hospital group like Memorial or Medipol often provides better outcomes than solo clinics. These centers integrate ocular surgery with systemic radiation and medical oncology departments. This ensures a comprehensive approach to metastatic risks, which is vital for melanoma or retinoblastoma patients.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of securing English contracts and requesting virtual consultations before traveling. Many recommend combining the significant cost savings in Turkey with continued follow-up care from their home-country oncologists for long-term monitoring.

What are the primary surgical treatment options for eye tumors in Turkey?

Primary surgical treatments for eye tumors in Turkey include eye-sparing techniques like ruthenium plaque brachytherapy, transpupillary thermotherapy, and local resections such as iridocyclectomy. Modern Steiner-standard facilities in Istanbul and Antalya prioritize vision preservation, reserving enucleation for advanced cases where the tumor cannot be safely contained.

  • Plaque brachytherapy: Radioactive ruthenium discs surgically stitched to the eye wall for localized radiation delivery.
  • Laser ablation: Transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) treats small posterior tumors during minimally invasive outpatient sessions.
  • Local resection: Iridocyclectomy removes tumors from the iris and ciliary body within 1–2 weeks.
  • Enucleation: Complete eyeball removal is a last resort, followed by custom aesthetic orbital implants.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from top Istanbul centers like Memorial Şişli and Hisar Hospital show a strong shift toward eye-sparing protocols. While US costs for these complex surgeries average $45,000, Turkish clinics offer the same ruthenium plaque technology starting from $10,500. This represents a 70% saving while maintaining high eye-retention rates for pediatric cases.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of a tumor board review before travel and suggest stocking up on lubricating eye drops to combat the dry Turkish climate during post-radiation recovery.

How long is the recovery period after ocular oncology surgery?

Recovery after ocular oncology surgery in Turkey typically involves a physical healing period of 1 to 6 weeks. While initial swelling and bruising subside within 14 days, full vision adaptation or prosthetic adjustment often requires 6 to 12 months for complete stabilization.

  • Initial healing: Most bruising and surgical discomfort peak and resolve within 3 to 4 days.
  • Activity resumption: Patients generally return to work or light activities within 2 to 6 weeks.
  • Prosthetic fitting: Permanent ocular prostheses are typically fitted 2 months after enucleation once swelling subsides.
  • Long-term adaptation: Complete tissue settling and scar maturation can continue for up to 1 year.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from major Istanbul centers shows that surgeons like Associate Professor Muhammet Derda Ozer, who has performed 25,000 procedures, often prioritize precise reconstructive techniques. While basic physical recovery is fast, patients receiving radiation-based plaque brachytherapy should prepare for peak vision blurring around week 6. Choosing clinics with JCI accreditation ensures that follow-up protocols for these specific radiation effects match the highest international safety standards.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find that while they can drive within 3 weeks, lingering light sensitivity and dry eye often require using prescribed drops for up to 6 months. Emotional adjustment to vision changes or prosthetics frequently takes longer than the physical healing of the surgical site.

Can I travel soon after ocular oncology surgery in Turkey?

Most patients can safely fly 7 to 14 days after ocular oncology surgery in Turkey, provided they receive a formal fit-to-fly clearance. Retinal procedures involving gas bubbles require a strict 2-to-6-week wait, as cabin pressure changes risk expansion and permanent blindness.

  • Travel timeline: External or eyelid surgeries generally allow travel within 7 to 10 days.
  • Retinal restriction: Flying is strictly prohibited until intraocular gas bubbles are fully reabsorbed by the body.
  • Mandatory follow-up: Patients typically attend check-ups 1 and 7 days post-op at JCI-accredited Istanbul clinics.
  • In-flight care: Use preservative-free artificial tears and protective eye shields to prevent dryness or injury.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics suggest a 10-day stay, our data shows top surgeons like Associate Professor Muhammet Derda Ozer often recommend a 14-day window for oncology cases. This extra buffer ensures the initial inflammatory phase passes before you face dry cabin air and pressure shifts.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that while domestic travel via train or car is possible after 48 hours, international flights before 4 weeks often lead to increased swelling and discomfort.

Are English-speaking staff and translators available during treatment?

Most Turkish ocular oncology centers provide English-speaking medical coordinators and several high-end clinics employ fluent surgeons. Facilities like Memorial Şişli Hospital and Hisar Hospital Intercontinental maintain dedicated international departments to ensure seamless communication during complex cancer treatments and surgical consultations.

  • Surgeon proficiency: Many specialists, including Dr. Muhammet Derda Ozer, hold United States Medical Licensing credentials.
  • International departments: Major hospitals serve patients from 167 countries with dedicated multilingual support teams.
  • Accreditation standards: Joint Commission International-accredited facilities often require standardized communication protocols for safety.
  • Support availability: Specialized ophthalmology clinics frequently provide coordinators for intake, consent, and follow-up care.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While top-tier surgeons often speak fluent English due to international fellowships at institutions like Harvard or Mayo Clinic, the nursing and anesthesia staff may not. Choosing a clinic with a high rating for international patient services, such as Hisar Hospital Intercontinental, typically ensures better access to dedicated translators who bridge this gap during recovery.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that while lead surgeons communicate clearly in English, using translation apps or bringing a bilingual companion is helpful for communicating with 24-hour nursing staff after surgery. Success in navigating care often depends on the clinic's experience with the specific international patient volume they handle annually.

What financing options exist for international patients?

International patients for ocular oncology surgery in Turkey can access financing through cross-border medical loans, hospital-specific installment plans, and third-party personal credit. Specialized lenders like Better by MTA and platforms like heva provide digital, multi-currency payment solutions specifically designed for medical travelers visiting JCI-accredited Turkish facilities.

  • Hospital payment plans: Many clinics offer 3–6 month interest-free installments with a partial upfront deposit.
  • Medical tourism loans: Dedicated providers offer fast approvals for international surgery, including oncology and ophthalmology.
  • Personal finance: Unsecured loans or medical credit cards like CareCredit cover costs up to $100,000.
  • Alternative payments: Some Istanbul-based clinics now accept cryptocurrency payments via platforms like Binance.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While US average costs reach $45,000, the same surgery in Turkey saves patients 70%. This massive price gap often makes high-interest medical loans unnecessary. Most patients find that personal savings or simple crowdfunding successfully covers the $10,500 starting cost without long-term debt.

Patient Consensus: Many patients rely on cash or bank transfers because international insurance rarely covers these procedures. Experts suggest checking for currency conversion fees, which can add 5–10% to the total bill.

What are the potential side effects of ocular cancer treatment in Turkey?

Side effects of ocular cancer treatment in Turkey typically include temporary eye irritation, vision changes, or radiation-related fatigue. Specialists at JCI-accredited centres like Memorial Şişli Hospital use radiotherapy and precision surgery to manage these risks. They aim to preserve both sight and eye structure.

  • Vision impacts: Patients might notice blurred vision, light sensitivity, or changes in depth perception.
  • Physical changes: Surgical removal (enucleation) or reconstruction can alter the appearance of the eye socket.
  • Radiation effects: Plaque therapy or proton beams can sometimes lead to cataracts or dry eye.
  • Immediate symptoms: Redness, swelling, and ocular discomfort are common during the initial healing phase.
  • Protective measures: Surgeons typically prescribe specialised eye drops and follow-up care to aid recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish specialists provide significant experience for rare tumours. Dr Muhammet Derda Ozer at his Istanbul clinic has performed over 25,000 procedures. He often uses interferon therapy to treat ocular surface tumours without surgery. This focus on bio-therapy helps patients avoid the physical side effects of invasive radical surgeries.

Can I go blind from plaque radiotherapy for ocular oncology in Turkey?

Blindness is a possible complication of plaque radiotherapy in Turkey. Despite this risk, 90% of tumours are successfully treated and the physical eye is preserved. Risks include radiation retinopathy and optic neuropathy. These depend on how close the tumour is to the optic nerve or macula.

  • Visual outcome: Success focuses on tumour control and eye preservation rather than restoring sight.
  • Risk factors: Vision loss depends on tumour size and its distance from the fovea.
  • Complication management: Specialists use anti-VEGF injections to delay or prevent damage from radiation retinopathy.
  • Expert care: Surgeons like Dr Muhammet Derda Ozer have performed 25,000+ procedures in the field.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Costs for ocular oncology surgery in Turkey range from $10,500 to $16,000. Specialist experience provides the real value. Leading Istanbul clinics like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental serve 250,000 patients annually. High patient volumes often lead to refined radiation planning. This is vital for sparing delicate retinal tissue.

Patient Consensus: Many see this procedure as a trade-off between keeping the eye and risking sight. They suggest asking for realistic vision estimates based on tumour proximity to the macula.

Which types of ocular tumours are treated by oncology specialists in Turkey?

Oncology specialists in Turkey treat many benign and malignant eye tumours. These include uveal melanoma, retinoblastoma, and ocular lymphoma. Treatment occurs in JCI-accredited centres like Memorial Şişli Hospital. These clinics use protocols such as plaque brachytherapy and proton therapy to preserve vision.

  • Intraocular tumours: Specialists manage uveal melanoma and retinoblastoma using radioactive isotopes and cryotherapy.
  • Orbital tumours: Surgeons perform complex orbitotomy for growths behind the eye and rhabdomyosarcoma.
  • Surface cancers: Treatment for squamous cell carcinoma includes topical interferon and perilesional injection therapy.
  • Metastatic tumours: Clinics manage secondary cancers that have spread to the eye from other organs.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish ocular oncology is highly multidisciplinary. It often involves surgeons like Dr Ali Riza Cenk Celebi, who holds Harvard training. Bookimed data shows these specialists frequently combine surgical enucleation with stereotactic radiotherapy. This level of integration helps maintain high success rates for complex orbital cases.

Patient Consensus: Patients find that Turkish specialists manage everything from paediatric retinoblastoma to adult intraocular melanoma. They recommend confirming if the centre handles both surface and deep orbital tumours before travelling.

Is plaque radiotherapy (brachytherapy) for eye tumours painful?

Plaque radiotherapy is not painful during placement or removal because surgeons use anaesthesia. While the plaque stays attached for 2 to 5 days, patients feel a gritty sensation rather than sharp pain. Specialists manage this minor irritation with lubricating drops and mild analgesics.

  • Surgical comfort: Anaesthesia prevents pain during plaque attachment to the eyeball.
  • Active treatment phase: It is common to feel an eyelash-like scratch from the disc.
  • Post-operative recovery: Eyes typically feel sore or swollen for several weeks after removal.
  • Long-term management: Radiation-induced dry eye is treated with prescription or over-the-counter drops.
  • Clinical oversight: JCI-accredited centres like Memorial Şişli Hospital provide post-surgical support.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish centres for ocular oncology frequently serve patients from over 160 countries. This high volume means teams like the one led by Assoc. Prof. Muhammet Derda Ozer are highly experienced. He has performed 25,000+ procedures and manages both patient comfort and complex surgical details.

Patient Consensus: The procedure in Turkey is often more intimidating in anticipation than the actual experience. Most find the first 2 days the most difficult. However, pressure and watering are easily controlled with medication and eye shields.

How long will I be hospitalised for ocular oncology surgery in Turkey?

Hospitalisation for ocular oncology surgery in Turkey typically ranges from 1 to 7 days. Most cases like enucleation or orbitotomy require 1–3 nights. Plaque brachytherapy patients stay for the duration of radiation, usually 2–7 days. Topical or injection therapies are often performed as same-day procedures.

  • Surgical procedures: Enucleation or orbital surgery generally involves 1–3 nights of hospital observation.
  • Radiation therapy: Plaque brachytherapy patients stay in hospital for 2–7 days until plaque removal.
  • Local therapies: Perilesional injections or photodynamic therapy are typically managed as same-day outpatient cases.
  • Observation period: Surgeons monitor for post-operative bleeding or swelling for 24–48 hours.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While hospital stays are brief, surgical expertise in Turkey is concentrated in high-volume centres like Memorial Şişli. Dr Muhammet Derda Ozer has performed 25,000+ procedures. This experience is more important than just the length of the hospital stay. Patients should plan for 7 days total in-country for pre-op scans and final checks.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report that hospital stays for eye cancer surgery are usually short. Many appreciate that clinics provide clear follow-up schedules. They also value telehealth options to help manage recovery once they return home.
