-I was lucky that I went to the website "Bukimed"
I'll start with the most important thing. The most important thing in a huge sea of information is to choose the right "light", "lighthouse", which will point the way to a person who finds himself in this abyss with a limited time and money limit. I was lucky that I went to the website "Bukimed". I was contacted by coordinating physician Ivan Koval, who was very tactful and at the same time confidently leading me forward. I rushed from one clinic to another, from one operator to another, he calmly explained to me all the pros and cons and was support even when I already completely refused his help and tuned in to another operator. Even then, he very tactfully warned about possible pitfalls and continued to be an assistant. As a result, I took his advice and did not regret it. Hi Medical is very sympathetic to customers, helps with everything, tries to reduce customer costs, where possible. Organizes as quickly as possible consultations and time-examination. Special thanks to Victoria, who spins like a squirrel in a wheel to keep everything in order, always in touch and will not rest until the matter is brought to an end. My treatment is not yet complete, but I'm glad that I got into such a nice team, which brightens up, as much as possible, a person's life one-to-one with his illness. Thank you and for a healthy sense of humor, it also helps to overcome illness!))) And, still. Ivan was in touch with me throughout his stay in Israel. He was convinced that I flew, I was met and I was engaged. He made sure that I get everything that was promised. And after my return home, too, remains in touch, helping in my next steps. Thanks for the help!

"I'm pleased now about the hospital and the treatment I got was great"
I'm pleased now about the hospital and the treatment I got was great, everything was done very fast(blood test, etc), the hospital has new equipment and it is really great. The price is higher to compare with Europe, but it is justified. One thing that I don't like that is I have a bad connection with a doctor after my consultation and every question that I had I could provide through middle-man only that is why it was not so fust. Also, the English level of the stuff was not so good.

Our Chemotherapy Techniques: What Suits You Best?

When considering Chemotherapy, it’s important to understand the different techniques and which is best suited for you. Here’s a concise comparison of popular options:

Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC)

HIPEC involves delivering heated chemotherapy directly into the abdominal cavity to treat cancer.

Pros: HIPEC can target cancer cells more effectively within the abdomen compared to systemic chemotherapy. It has shown a 50% increase in survival rates for certain cancers.
Cons: This procedure may lead to more immediate side effects like abdominal pain and requires hospitalization for monitoring. Only suitable for cancers confined to the peritoneal cavity.
Effectiveness: 70% success rate in extending patient survival for specific peritoneal cancers.
Duration: 6-12 hours.
Recovery: 4-6 weeks.
Best for: Peritoneal carcinomatosis and abdominal tumors, especially those from colorectal and ovarian origins.
Prices: Cost of Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) in Israel from $61,200

Chemotherapy for breast cancer

Chemotherapy for breast cancer is a systemic treatment using drugs to destroy cancer cells in the body.

Pros: Effective in reducing tumor size before surgery, with a success rate of up to 70%. Can be combined with other therapies for better outcomes.
Cons: May cause significant side effects like hair loss and fatigue in 60% of patients. Requires multiple sessions over several months.
Effectiveness: Achieves a complete response in approximately 30% of patients.
Duration: 1-3 hours per session, repeated every 3 weeks over 3-6 months.
Recovery: Recovery from side effects can take several weeks to months.
Best for: Early-stage breast cancer and metastatic breast cancer. Suitable for patients with high-risk tumors.

Chemotherapy for lung cancer

Chemo uses cancer drugs to kill or stop the growth of cancer cells in the lungs.

Pros: Effective in shrinking tumors and improving survival rates in 60% of cases. Can be used in combination with radiation therapy for better results.
Cons: Causes significant side effects like fatigue and nausea in 70% of patients. May not be suitable for those with existing health conditions.
Effectiveness: 60% success rate in tumor reduction.
Duration: Treatment sessions last 1-3 hours over several weeks.
Recovery: Recovery can take 4-6 weeks after the final session.
Best for: Targeting lung tumors and metastases in patients with stage 3 or 4 lung cancer.
Prices: Cost of Chemotherapy for lung cancer in Israel from $3,200

Chemotherapy for liver cancer

Involves the use of powerful drugs to target and destroy cancer cells in the liver, aiming to shrink tumors and prevent metastasis.

Pros: Provides systemic treatment, reaching cancer cells throughout the body. Effective in managing symptoms and improving quality of life for 40% of patients.
Cons: Associated with significant side effects like nausea and fatigue in 80% of cases. Less targeted compared to localized therapies like HIPEC.
Effectiveness: Achieves a tumor response rate of 20-30% in liver cancer cases.
Duration: Each session lasts 2-6 hours, repeated every 3 weeks.
Recovery: Initial recovery period of 1-2 months, with ongoing management of side effects.
Best for: Liver cancer patients with metastatic disease, requiring systemic treatment. Addresses tumor reduction and symptom management.

FAQ about Chemotherapy in Israel

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What makes chemotherapy in Israel unique?

Israel offers a unique integration of rapid clinical trial access, AI-driven personalization, and holistic care within JCI-accredited facilities. Patients access innovative therapies faster than in many Western countries due to direct integration between research and treatment at centers like Sourasky Medical Center and Hadassah Medical Center.

  • Treatment speed: Most patients start chemotherapy within 1 week of initial diagnostic consultation.
  • Advanced delivery: Nanotechnology and specialized cooling caps effectively reduce common side effects like hair loss.
  • Expertise levels: Leading specialists like Professor Ofer Merimsky hold multiple international oncology board certifications.
  • Personalized dosing: AI-driven blood tests predict therapy responses to optimize chemo-immunotherapy success rates.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While prices for chemotherapy in Israel start at $2,400, the real value lies in the 90% success rate reported at Ichilov. Centers like Rambam and Sheba operate on a high-volume model with Nobel Prize-winning staff. This allows them to manage complex cases that other international hospitals frequently decline.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the efficiency of the diagnostic process and the optimism of the medical staff. Many mention that specialized support like acupuncture and nutritionists are often included alongside conventional chemotherapy cycles.

Which are the top hospitals for oncology in Israel?

Israel is home to world-renowned oncology centers like Sourasky Medical Center, Sheba Medical Center, and Hadassah Medical Center. These institutions are recognized by Newsweek for excellence in cancer care, offering advanced treatments like immunotherapy and precision radiotherapy with success rates reaching 90% for specific cancer types.

  • Sourasky (Ichilov): Reports 90% oncology success using robotic surgery and Novalis Truebeam STx technology.
  • Sheba Medical Center: Ranked #9 smart hospital globally, partnering with MD Anderson for complex cases.
  • Hadassah Jerusalem: Features the Sharett Institute, a Nobel-award institution specializing in personalized chemotherapy regimens.
  • Assuta Medical Center: Largest private facility allowing patients to choose specific oncologists for individualized care.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While Sheba and Hadassah are leaders in research, Sourasky Medical Center (Ichilov) remains the most requested choice for international patients. With over 2,400 requests served, their 90% success rate and high doctor-to-patient ratio—including specialists like Dr. Ofer Merimsky—drive consistent popularity for lung and sarcoma treatments.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that the high cost of Israeli treatment is justified by the speed of diagnosis and advanced equipment. Many recommend organizing private rooms early and bringing comprehensive medical records to prevent any delays in starting chemotherapy.

Are there alternatives for cancers where chemo is less effective?

Targeted therapy and immunotherapy provide effective options when chemotherapy fails by attacking specific cancer molecules or activating the immune system. Leading Israeli centers like Sourasky Medical Center utilize genetic testing for PD-L1 and EGFR to identify precise treatments like Keytruda or Tagrisso for resistant tumors.

  • Immunotherapy: Checkpoint inhibitors like Opdivo and Keytruda help immune cells destroy hidden tumors.
  • Targeted therapy: Precise drugs block proteins essential for cancer growth, often outperforming traditional chemotherapy.
  • Genetic testing: Centers test for ALK, KRAS, and BRAF mutations before selecting therapy pathways.
  • Localized treatment: Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) targets tumors directly if systemic drugs fail.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli oncology excels because major centers like Sheba and Sourasky integrate research directly into care. Dr. Pelles Sharon and others participate in phase 1-3 trials, giving patients access to drug combinations years before they become global standards. This research-heavy environment is why Sourasky maintains a 90% oncology treatment success rate.

Patient Consensus: Many find that seeking second opinions at major Israeli clinics uncovers alternative treatment pathways. Patients emphasize that genetic testing is a vital first step to avoid unnecessary chemo side effects.

How is chemotherapy typically administered?

Chemotherapy is primarily administered through intravenous (IV) infusions, oral pills, or subcutaneous injections. Most Israeli oncology centers use day clinics where patients receive treatment over 2 to 6 hours. Methods vary based on cancer type, drug toxicity, and the specific treatment protocol designed by your oncologist.

  • Intravenous infusion: Delivers medication directly into veins using peripheral lines, PICC lines, or ports.
  • Oral administration: Available as pills or capsules for home use with mandatory weekly monitoring.
  • Subcutaneous injection: Administered under the skin, often for supportive drugs like white blood cell boosters.
  • Intrathecal delivery: Injected into the spinal fluid to treat or prevent cancer in the brain.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli facilities like Sourasky and Sheba often combine chemotherapy with advanced diagnostic tracking. Our data shows that top centers require fresh blood tests on the same morning as infusion. This practice ensures your body can safely handle the chemicals, potentially preventing severe complications before they start.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the convenience of day clinics equipped with recliners and WiFi for long infusions. Many recommend applying ice before home-based booster injections to significantly reduce local discomfort and skin irritation.

How long should I expect to stay in Israel for chemotherapy treatment?

Patients should plan for an initial stay of 2 to 6 weeks in Israel to complete diagnostic protocols and the first chemotherapy cycle. While a full course typically spans 3 to 6 months, many international patients travel between cycles or stay for 10 to 14 days per round.

  • Diagnostic phase: Consultations and molecular testing typically require 2 to 5 working days upon arrival.
  • Treatment cycles: Standard chemotherapy cycles occur every 2 to 4 weeks depending on the regimen.
  • Hospitalization duration: Most sessions are outpatient, but complex first-time infusions may require 24 to 48 hours.
  • Recovery buffer: Doctors often recommend a 7-day buffer stay to monitor acute side effects or infections.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from Sourasky Medical Center shows that 90% success rates often stem from rapid 3-day diagnostic windows. High-volume centers like Sheba or Ichilov often start treatment faster than US facilities. This efficiency allows patients to return home for recovery sooner, provided they pass a 48-hour post-infusion observation.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that staying 3 to 6 weeks for the first cycle is vital for monitoring. They suggest budgeting for extra hotel nights if leukemia or high-dose treatments require unexpected inpatient stays.

What support services are available for international chemotherapy patients?

International chemotherapy patients in Israel access support through dedicated international departments at centers like Sourasky and Sheba. These hubs coordinate medical visas, professional translation, and local housing near facilities. Patients also receive detailed English-language treatment summaries to ensure seamless care continuity with their home-country oncologists.

  • Logistical coordination: Dedicated departments at Hadassah and Rambam manage visa letters and airport transfers.
  • Housing support: Clinics maintain vetted lists of apartments to reduce fatigue during active treatment.
  • Language services: Clinical teams provide medical translation, though private interpreters are available for complex talks.
  • Clinical trial access: Major centers like Sourasky offer international patients rapid enrollment in advanced oncology trials.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While Israel's top hospitals like Sheba and Sourasky serve over 1,000,000 patients annually, the most successful international experiences often depend on the `lifeline` coordinator. Data shows quality varies by season, so patients should confirm their dedicated contact 3 months before arrival. Choosing accommodation within walking distance of the hospital is a critical but overlooked factor for managing chemotherapy-related fatigue in Tel Aviv’s high-traffic areas.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that while medical staff speak English, navigating non-clinical hospital areas often requires a trusted Hebrew speaker. Many find essential emotional support and local tips through informal WhatsApp networks and Facebook expat groups rather than formal hospital programs.
