-I was lucky that I went to the website "Bukimed"
I'll start with the most important thing. The most important thing in a huge sea of information is to choose the right "light", "lighthouse", which will point the way to a person who finds himself in this abyss with a limited time and money limit. I was lucky that I went to the website "Bukimed". I was contacted by coordinating physician Ivan Koval, who was very tactful and at the same time confidently leading me forward. I rushed from one clinic to another, from one operator to another, he calmly explained to me all the pros and cons and was support even when I already completely refused his help and tuned in to another operator. Even then, he very tactfully warned about possible pitfalls and continued to be an assistant. As a result, I took his advice and did not regret it. Hi Medical is very sympathetic to customers, helps with everything, tries to reduce customer costs, where possible. Organizes as quickly as possible consultations and time-examination. Special thanks to Victoria, who spins like a squirrel in a wheel to keep everything in order, always in touch and will not rest until the matter is brought to an end. My treatment is not yet complete, but I'm glad that I got into such a nice team, which brightens up, as much as possible, a person's life one-to-one with his illness. Thank you and for a healthy sense of humor, it also helps to overcome illness!))) And, still. Ivan was in touch with me throughout his stay in Israel. He was convinced that I flew, I was met and I was engaged. He made sure that I get everything that was promised. And after my return home, too, remains in touch, helping in my next steps. Thanks for the help!

"I'm pleased now about the hospital and the treatment I got was great"
I'm pleased now about the hospital and the treatment I got was great, everything was done very fast(blood test, etc), the hospital has new equipment and it is really great. The price is higher to compare with Europe, but it is justified. One thing that I don't like that is I have a bad connection with a doctor after my consultation and every question that I had I could provide through middle-man only that is why it was not so fust. Also, the English level of the stuff was not so good.

FAQ about Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) in Israel

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is HIPEC and how does it work?

Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a two-step abdominal cancer treatment. Surgeons first perform cytoreductive surgery to remove visible tumors. They then circulate heated chemotherapy inside the abdomen to destroy microscopic cancer cells. This targeted approach achieves higher drug concentrations with fewer systemic side effects.

  • Treatment step 1: Surgeons remove all visible diseased tissue through intensive cytoreductive surgery.
  • Treatment step 2: Heated chemotherapy solution circulates throughout the abdominal cavity for 90 minutes.
  • Hyperthermic advantage: Heat increases drug absorption and helps kill resistant microscopic cancer cells.
  • Hospital stay: Patients typically remain hospitalized for 8 to 14 days following surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli centers like Sheba and Sourasky operate as national referral hubs for peritoneal surface oncology. Experienced surgeons like Dr. Almog Ben Yaacov have performed over 200 HIPEC procedures. These clinics often include comprehensive PET/CT and MRI diagnostics in their treatment packages to ensure precise PCI scoring before surgery.

Patient Consensus: Recovery requires significant physical strength and at least 3 months to regain basic functionality. Patients emphasize that having a dedicated support system is essential during the intensive 12-month full recovery period.

Which cancers are treated with HIPEC in Israel?

Israeli oncology centers use HIPEC to treat advanced abdominal malignancies including colorectal, ovarian, appendiceal, and gastric cancers. This procedure combined with cytoreductive surgery targets peritoneal surface tumors at JCI-accredited facilities such as Sheba Medical Center and Sourasky Medical Center using heated chemotherapy delivery.

  • Ovarian cancer: Specifically treats stage 3 patients responding to neoadjuvant chemotherapy protocols.
  • Gastrointestinal malignancies: Effective for colorectal, stomach, and primary peritoneal cancers with metastasis.
  • Eligibility criteria: Requires a peritoneal cancer index score below 20 for procedure approval.
  • Surgical requirement: Surgeons must first remove all visible tumors through complete cytoreductive surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli centers like Sheba Medical Center offer a high level of surgical expertise, with specialists like Dr. Almog Ben Yaacov performing over 200 HIPEC procedures. This high volume is significant because surgical skill directly impacts the success of the essential debulking phase performed before the chemotherapy bath.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that HIPEC is a highly invasive treatment requiring significant mental preparation for a one-year recovery journey. Eligibility often hinges on how well a patient responds to initial chemotherapy cycles before surgery is even scheduled.

How successful is HIPEC in Israel?

HIPEC in Israel is highly successful, with leading medical centers reporting 60–80% efficacy in extending survival for advanced abdominal cancers. Specialized hospitals achieved a 70–80% 10-year survival rate for pseudomyxoma peritonei, supported by JCI-accredited facilities and surgeons with extensive fellowship training from top global institutions.

  • Targeted chemotherapy: Direct abdominal application allows doses 20 times higher than traditional intravenous methods.
  • Specialized expertise: Surgeons like Almog Ben Yaacov have performed over 200 HIPEC procedures since 2018.
  • Survival outcomes: Primary peritoneal tumors show nearly 70% 5-year survival rates in experienced Israeli centers.
  • Global recognition: Facilities such as Sheba and Sourasky consistently rank among Newsweek top world hospitals.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli oncology centers like Sourasky integrate specialized research fellowships into their HIPEC programs. Our data shows Sheba Medical Center uniquely bundles 14 nights of hotel stay with an 8-day hospital stay. This extended monitoring period is crucial because HIPEC success depends heavily on managing the intensive early recovery phase before international travel.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that while HIPEC significantly extends life, it is an invasive procedure requiring a full year for complete recovery. Success is most common when the tumor remains confined to the abdomen and the patient maintains high physical strength before surgery.

What are the side effects and recovery after HIPEC?

HIPEC recovery typically requires 3 to 6 months for functional recovery and up to 1 year for full baseline normalization. Patients experience side effects including extreme fatigue, digestive issues, and fluid retention. The process begins with an 8 to 16-day hospital stay in JCI-accredited Israeli facilities.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 8 to 16 days, including 3 to 4 days in the ICU.
  • Common side effects: Fatigue, nausea, and vivid orange urine immediately following the heated chemotherapy application.
  • Recovery timeline: The first 8 weeks involve significant mobility challenges and digestive system adjustments.
  • Long-term monitoring: Vigilant follow-up ensures kidney health and checks for adhesions or metabolic issues.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli oncology centers like Sheba Medical Center offer a distinct advantage with surgeons like Dr. Almog Ben Yaacov. He has performed over 200 HIPEC procedures since 2018. This high volume often leads to better management of the intense 3 to 4-day ICU phase. Patients benefit from specialized post-operative protocols that focus on early mobility to prevent blood clots.

Patient Consensus: Patients describe the persistent fatigue as walking through wet cement for the first 6 weeks. They recommend 24/7 assistance at home to help manage abdominal drains and maintain high-protein liquid nutrition.

Where can I get HIPEC treatment in Israel?

Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) is available at JCI-accredited facilities in Israel, including Sheba Medical Center and Sourasky Medical Center. These institutions specialize in cytoreductive surgery for advanced abdominal cancers, utilizing multidisciplinary teams of surgical oncologists and specialists certified by the European Society of Surgical Oncology.

  • Available clinics: Sheba Medical Center and Sourasky Medical Center offer specialized peritoneal surface malignancy programs.
  • Expert surgeons: Dr. Almog Ben Yaacov at Sheba has performed over 200 procedures since 2018.
  • Hospital stay: Most treatment packages include an average 8-day stay for initial surgical recovery.
  • Program standards: Clinics maintain Newsweek top-tier rankings and Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation for safety.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli medical centers like Sheba and Sourasky offer unique continuity of care by bundling 14 nights of hotel accommodation or VIP transfers into their packages. This is critical for HIPEC patients, as basic functionality typically takes 3 months to return, and having stabilized local housing post-discharge ensures easier access to mandatory follow-up screenings.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that eligibility is strictly limited to cancer confined to the abdomen. Recovery is intense, often requiring 6 to 12 months for a full return to normal activity levels.
