My assessment of the clinic was only because I did not stay there, only about 20 minutes for an OSTA examination. I was expecting a full examination because I was invited to the Ichilov-Surasky clinic, but was only in two private clinics for consultations. I chose the Vital hotel exclusively because of Considerations to be close to the clinic. Thank you very much Bookimed for choosing a clinic for us for 3 months and keeping in touch with us throughout the time that we were there, but their partners who deal with us upon arrival in the country are negligent about worn and not fully perform their obyazonnosti.Im want to advise humanity, we (people with health) eat with the hope of recovery! I wish you all Health and Kindness!
About Bookimed service
I am satisfied with Bookimed, but I advise you to change partners, only because of them I cannot accurately evaluate either the clinic or the treating doctors. Good luck and health to all Bookeemed employees

Our IOLs implantation Techniques: What Suits You Best?

When considering IOLs implantation, it’s important to understand the different techniques and which is best suited for you. Here’s a concise comparison of popular options:

Cataract surgery with IOL replacement

This procedure involves removing the cloudy lens of the eye and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens to restore clear vision.

Pros: High success rates of over 95% for improved vision. Quick recovery time with most patients seeing clearly within a few days.
Cons: Potential for minor post-operative complications like dry eyes or halos around lights in less than 10% of cases.
Effectiveness: 98% of patients achieve significantly improved vision.
Duration: 1-2 hours
Recovery: 1-2 weeks
Best for: Individuals with cataracts causing vision impairment, affecting daily activities.

Phacoemulsification with IOL implantation

This procedure involves using ultrasound to emulsify the eye's lens, which is then replaced with an artificial intraocular lens.

Pros: Minimally invasive with a small incision, leading to faster recovery. Over 90% success rate in restoring vision clarity.
Cons: May cause temporary visual disturbances like glare or halos. Risk of posterior capsule opacification in 20% of cases.
Effectiveness: 95% success rate in achieving desired visual acuity.
Duration: 30 to 45 minutes.
Recovery: 1 to 2 weeks.
Best for: Individuals with cataracts or refractive errors affecting vision. Suitable for those aged 50 and above.
Prices: Cost of Phacoemulsification with IOL implantation in Israel from $5,850

FAQ about IOLs implantation in Israel

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is it safe to have IOL implantation in Israel?

IOL implantation in Israel is safe due to high medical standards and advanced surgical techniques. Most procedures achieve a 95-98% success rate. Facilities like Sourasky Medical Center (Ichilov) and Assuta maintain JCI accreditation, utilizing sophisticated methods including phacoemulsification and multifocal replacements.

  • Surgeon expertise: Doctors like Professor Anat Loewenstein specialize in advanced refractive and cataract surgeries.
  • Accredited facilities: Top centers like Rambam and Assuta hold rigorous Joint Commission International certifications.
  • Modern technology: Clinics utilize advanced diagnostics and minimally invasive approaches for lens placement.
  • Clinical volume: Sourasky Medical Center performs 34,000 annual operations, ensuring high surgical proficiency.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli medical centers often function as global training hubs for complex ophthalmology. Private centers like Assuta were the first in the country to earn JCI accreditation. This prioritizing of international standards explains why clinics rarely face technical complications despite performing over 90,000 procedures annually.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of verifying lens models for safety and suggest checking clinic satisfaction ratings for similar eye surgeries. Most feel confident when surgeons confirm their candidacy for specific multifocal or accommodating lens types.

Who is a good candidate for IOL implantation in Israel?

Good candidates for IOL implantation in Israel include individuals with cataracts or high refractive errors, such as myopia and hyperopia, whose vision remains stable. This procedure effectively serves those between 18 and 55 with thin corneas or dry eye syndrome who do not qualify for LASIK or other laser surgeries.

  • Corneal suitability: Ideal for patients with thin or irregular corneas unsuitable for laser vision correction.
  • Refractive range: Suited for severe nearsightedness or farsightedness requiring high cylindrical prescriptions for astigmatism.
  • Stable vision: Requires a stable eye prescription for at least 12 months before the procedure.
  • Ocular health: Beneficial for patients with age-related or traumatic cataracts seeking permanent vision restoration.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many seek multifocal lenses, surgeons at Sourasky Medical Center (Ichilov) often recommend Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) lenses for younger patients. This specialized IOL type provides a smoother range of vision. It helps reduce the halo effects common with traditional multifocal implants.

Patient Consensus: Patients under 45 often explore ICL as a reversible alternative. Those with previous refractive surgeries find specialized lenses like the IC-8 essential for correcting irregular astigmatism.

What does recovery from IOL surgery involve?

Recovery from IOL surgery involves a rapid healing phase where vision typically improves within 1 to 3 days. Full visual stabilization and incision healing generally require 5 to 6 weeks. Patients must follow a localized antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drop regimen for approximately 3 weeks.

  • Hospital stay: IOL implantation is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure lasting 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Initial follow-up: A mandatory check-up is required 24 hours post-operation to monitor lens positioning.
  • Activity restrictions: Avoid heavy lifting or bending the head below the waist for 2 weeks.
  • Eye protection: Wear a protective shield during sleep for 7 to 14 nights following surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While IOL costs in Tel Aviv clinics like Assuta or Sourasky align closely with US averages, the value lies in institutional volume. Leading Israeli centers perform over 34,000 to 92,000 operations annually. This immense surgical frequency contributes to high proficiency in complex techniques like phacoemulsification and multifocal replacements.

Patient Consensus: Most patients report feeling physically comfortable by the second day, though vision fluctuates due to common post-operative dry eye. Using a tracking chart for the four daily eye drops is frequently recommended to ensure compliance during the multi-week healing phase.

What types of IOLs are available in Israeli clinics?

Israeli clinics provide a comprehensive range of advanced intraocular lenses, including monofocal, multifocal, toric, and extended depth of focus (EDOF) options. Leading facilities utilize premium international brands like Alcon PanOptix and Johnson & Johnson TECNIS Symfony to treat cataracts, astigmatism, and presbyopia with high precision.

  • Monofocal lenses: Standard implants providing clear vision at one distance, typically for far sight.
  • Multifocal and trifocal: Premium lenses correcting near, intermediate, and far vision to reduce glass dependency.
  • Toric IOLs: Specialized optics designed to correct pre-existing astigmatism during cataract or refractive surgery.
  • EDOF technology: Extended depth of focus lenses offering a continuous range of high-quality intermediate vision.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many global clinics focus on standard monofocals, Israeli centers like Sourasky (Ichilov) frequently utilize specialized IC-8 small-aperture lenses. This technology is particularly beneficial for complex cases like keratoconus or irregular corneas. High surgical volumes at centers like Assuta allow patients access to the latest Light Adjustable Lenses (LAL) for post-operative vision fine-tuning.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize asking for specific brands like Alcon Vivity rather than generic categories. Many recommend following surgeon advice regarding multifocal glare risks, suggesting monofocal-plus alternatives for sensitive night drivers.

How does the IOL selection process work?

Selecting an intraocular lens in Israel involves a diagnostic evaluation matching eye anatomy with visual goals. Surgeons use optical biometry and corneal topography to measure axial length and curvature. This data determines the ideal lens type, ranging from standard monofocals to premium multifocal or toric options.

  • Diagnostic biometry: Clinics use IOLMaster 700 to measure axial length and lens thickness precision.
  • Mathematical modeling: Surgeons apply Barrett or Hill-RBF formulas to predict accurate visual outcomes.
  • Diopter precision: Lens power options are selected in 0.5-diopter increments for the closest possible match.
  • Lifestyle mapping: Patients choose between distance-only clarity or multifocal ranges to reduce glasses dependence.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Israeli centers like Assuta or Sourasky often treat patients with complex histories, including previous refractive surgeries. For these cases, surgeons utilize intraoperative verification tools like ORA to adjust lens selection in real-time while the eye is open. This technology significantly improves accuracy compared to pre-operative measurements alone.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that clear communication regarding the trade-off between near-vision freedom and potential night glares is the most vital part of the consultation.
