Drs seemed very good. The consultation was calm and professional but I was told I would have results within 2 working days. When I didn’t receive any information I returned to the hospital and was told I would be emailed within 24 hours. When that didn’t happen I had to come in again and was hugely surprised by a very rude and impatient receptionist who was dismissive and seemed to want to blame me somehow. She made some very unprofessional comments about me to colleagues in front of other patients when she thought I couldn’t hear. Other staff did their best to help afterwards but considering the money spent and my experience I would not recommend this place at all.

I went to the Galeazzi clinic. Milan. Italy. on my son's problem - gmgantism. Coordinators from Bookimed got involved. Had an online consultation. for which I paid 360 euros. All required documentation has been sent. references. analyses. x-rays. To determine the volume of the operation and the cost, they said that the patient needs to come to Milan. I'm from Ukraine. It's hard to describe how the journey cost me. with what difficulty. Upon arrival in Milan. we are consulted by another doctor and gives quite the opposite answer.!! Is it really impossible to agree and view all the documentation. y t. h and the video was sent!!! with immediately give a negative answer during an online consultation. why do it at all then? It's just a waste of money. not problem solving. Be careful!

"A trip to the clinic was done by Yana
Hello, I have serious scoliosis and some other health problems, it is necessary to operate scoliosis and preferably as soon as possible since it will only get worse ... In Ukraine, everyone refused to operate because there was a very big risk, Poland also refused ... Then I My coordinator Pavel Popkov wrote to Bookimed just a great person, he answers any questions even to stupid ones, he sent my documents to different clinics and finally the Galeazzi clinic was told to come for a detailed consultation ... The consultation was successful, everything seems to be going positive, waiting for a final decision from them! A trip to the clinic was done by Yana. She got us free tickets for a special program.

FAQ about Bone deformity correction surgery in Italy

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What techniques are commonly used for bone deformity correction surgery in Italy?

Bone deformity correction in Italy utilizes advanced distraction osteogenesis, 3D-planned osteotomies, and computerized hexapod fixators. Surgeons frequently employ the Ilizarov method for complex limb lengthening or high tibial osteotomy (HTO) to correct bow legs, often utilizing patient-specific 3D-printed cutting guides to enhance precision and accelerate healing.

  • Ilizarov method: Circular external frames facilitate gradual bone realignment through controlled distraction osteogenesis.
  • 3D-planned osteotomy: Custom-printed guides ensure surgical cuts achieve exact alignment for complex deformities.
  • Internal lengthening: Motorized intramedullary nails, like the Precice system, provide correction without external hardware.
  • Guided growth: Epiphysiodesis techniques manage pediatric deformities by modulating growth at the epiphyseal plate.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While traditional Ilizarov frames remain the clinical standard for severe cases, top-tier centers like Maria Cecilia Hospital emphasize the transition to internal fixation. Data shows that using 3D-printed custom guides for high tibial osteotomies can effectively halve recovery times from 12 weeks to just 6. This precision-focused approach significantly reduces the risk of non-union compared to standard manual methods.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that while recovery requires dedicated physiotherapy, 3D-planned procedures offer much faster mobilization. Many recommend seeking surgeons with extensive portfolios in internal lengthening nails to minimize scarring and postoperative discomfort.

What is the typical recovery timeline after bone deformity correction?

Bone deformity correction recovery usually spans 6 to 12 months for adults, while children often heal within 4 to 6 months. Patients generally remain in a non-weight-bearing phase for 6 to 12 weeks, with full bone stabilization and high-impact activity typically achieved around the one-year mark.

  • Initial phase: Wound healing and strict rest occur during the first 2 weeks post-surgery.
  • Weight-bearing transition: Patients typically transition to protected weight-bearing between 6 and 12 weeks.
  • Surgical techniques: Fixation methods include Ilizarov external frames or internal PRECICE nails for stabilization.
  • Activity milestones: Low-impact exercises like swimming often begin 3 to 6 months after the procedure.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many overlook hospital specialization, Maria Cecilia Hospital in Italy holds JCI accreditation and was specifically ranked by patients for orthopedic excellence. Choosing a facility with these specific credentials often ensures access to multidisciplinary heart and bone teams, which is vital for managing recovery in complex deformity cases.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find that pain peaks around the 4 to 6-week mark and recommend planning for 3 to 6 months off work. Survivors of this procedure often feel that psychological adjustment takes longer than physical bone healing.

Can Italian surgeons correct congenital deformities such as clubfoot or hallux valgus?

Italian orthopedic surgeons are global leaders in correcting congenital deformities through advanced percutaneous and minimally invasive techniques. Specialist centers utilize the Ponseti method for clubfoot and innovative osteotomy procedures for hallux valgus, achieving high success rates within JCI-accredited facilities in cities like Milan, Rome, and Bologna.

  • Clubfoot treatment: Pediatric specialists primarily utilize the gold-standard Ponseti method for non-surgical realignment.
  • Minimally invasive surgery: Surgeons correct hallux valgus using 2–3 mm incisions, reducing scarring and pain.
  • Advanced osteotomy: Centers use SERI and Scarf techniques to provide durable bone realignment and stability.
  • World-class facilities: IRCCS Galeazzi-Sant’Ambrogio maintains a 91% success rate for complex orthopedic interventions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many seek Italy for its surgical reputation, the real advantage lies in pediatric expertise. Maria Cecilia Hospital is specifically recognized for orthopedic disorder treatments and is JCI-certified. Clinics in Italy often handle high volumes, with some facilities managing 15,000 hospitalizations annually. This experience ensures surgeons are proficient in both routine and complex congenital reconstructions.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of early intervention for clubfoot to ensure better outcomes. Those undergoing bunion correction highlight that choosing private clinics avoids long public wait times, which can exceed 1 year.

Who are some of the top-rated orthopedic surgeons for bone deformity correction in Italy?

Italy hosts world-renowned orthopedic specialists for bone deformity correction, including Dr. Mario Tartarone at Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy and Dr. Raul Zini at Maria Cecilia Hospital. These experts utilize advanced techniques like the Ilizarov method and osteotomy within JCI-accredited facilities to treat limb lengthening and complex joint reconstructions.

  • Dr. Mario Tartarone: Rome-based specialist with 24 years experience and 1,100 deformity procedures.
  • Dr. Raul Zini: Performs complex joint reconstructions in Bologna with 15,000 career operations.
  • Prof. Valerio Sansone: Heads clinical orthopedics at Galeazzi Institute, specializing in minimally invasive reconstruction.
  • Dr. Manuele Lampasi: Focuses on pediatric limb lengthening and complex congenital foot deformities.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Maria Cecilia Hospital stands out for quality, holding both JCI accreditation and a specific Bookimed award for orthopedic excellence. While average costs are lower than the US, high-volume centers in Bologna and Rome offer the most surgery-specific experience. Choosing a facility with over 200 doctors ensures comprehensive perioperative care.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend the Rizzoli Institute for complex congenital cases but suggest private clinics in Milan for faster access. Many advise requesting pre- and post-operative X-rays directly from surgeons to verify prior successful outcomes.
