I can genuinely say my eyes look perfectly matched
My main worry before the lateral canthoplasty was asymmetry, knowing how delicate the procedure is, but I can genuinely say my eyes look perfectly matched. It's such a relief. The surgeon and the entire staff provided wonderful care from start to finish. While I'm still in the early stages of healing, the shape is already very close to my goal. The recovery has been manageable. The biggest challenge has been sleeping upright, but that's a small thing compared to the results. I'm so glad I chose this clinic for my procedure and feel very looked after.

Rude staff. And the trip turned out to be in vain. So much time, effort and money was spent. Documents were preliminarily sent, and extracts available at that time, treatment passed, etc. They invited me to the examination and obtain a preliminary treatment plan, although it was clear to the provided procurers that treatment was impossible. They did the same thing that they had sent earlier, shrugged their hands and said Excuse me, we can’t help ...

FAQ about Trabeculotomy in Republic of Korea

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is the success rate of trabeculotomy for congenital glaucoma in South Korea?

Trabeculotomy in South Korea shows a high success rate for primary congenital glaucoma. This is especially true with the 180-degree suture technique. Studies report an 85.7% overall success rate, maintaining intraocular pressure below 22 mm Hg. Long-term results remain stable, with 78.9% success even after 5 years.

  • Suture technique: 180-degree suture trabeculotomy achieves 85.7% success without further surgery.
  • Pressure reduction: Average intraocular pressure drops significantly from 29.8 mm Hg to 16.9 mm Hg.
  • Long-term stability: Success rates reach 95% at 1 year and 87.7% at 3 years.
  • Medication reduction: Most patients require an average of only 0.38 medications after the procedure.

Bookimed Expert Insight: National success rates for angle surgery range from 70% to 90%. However, South Korean hospitals like Severance Hospital partner with US providers such as the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. This collaboration helps paediatric glaucoma cases follow global protocols. Following these protocols helps maintain higher long-term success rates compared to general eye centres.

Patient Consensus: Success rates vary by surgeon and patient age in South Korea. Specialist paediatric ophthalmologists provide the most reliable outcomes for congenital glaucoma cases.

What are the common complications after suture trabeculotomy in South Korea?

Suture trabeculotomy in South Korea is a safe procedure for primary congenital glaucoma. Most common complications include hypotony, where eye pressure stays too low, and a shallow anterior chamber. South Korean specialists at JCI-accredited centres effectively manage these early-stage issues using intensive clinical protocols.

  • Intraocular pressure: Hypotony is a common early effect requiring careful monitoring.
  • Anterior chamber: Shallowing often results from over-filtration during the initial recovery.
  • Early hyphema: Minor bleeding in the eye occurs but usually resolves quickly.
  • Bleb maintenance: Clinicians monitor for bleb failure to maintain long-term pressure control.
  • Vision health: Minor risks like subconjunctival haemorrhage or cataracts are less frequent.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Leading Seoul hospitals like Asan Medical Center and Severance Hospital perform over 90,000 surgeries combined annually. This massive volume means surgical teams have refined technique in 180-degree suture trabeculotomy. Their high-frequency practice often leads to lower complication rates compared to lower-volume regional centres.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that South Korean specialists distinguish between open surgical procedures and laser treatments. The medical staff provide clear recovery steps to manage temporary pressure spikes or inflammation.

Which top clinics perform trabeculotomy in the Republic of Korea?

Top clinics for trabeculotomy in the Republic of Korea include several major hospitals. They are Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Asan Medical Center, and Severance Hospital. These major Seoul institutions specialise in complex glaucoma treatments. They use JCI and GHA accreditations to meet global safety standards. These standards cover both paediatric and adult eye surgery.

  • Seoul National University Bundang: Operates as South Korea's first digital hospital with GHA accreditation.
  • Asan Medical Center: Largest multidisciplinary facility in Korea with specialised KOIHA and ISO certifications.
  • Severance Hospital: JCI-accredited facility affiliated with Yonsei University performing 40,000 annual operations.
  • Specialised technology: Clinics use safety systems and digital tracking for high-precision eye microsurgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many Australian patients look to Korea for elective procedures. These specific hospitals serve massive volumes. For example, Severance Hospital handles 4,000,000 outpatients. In this high-volume environment, surgeons maintain exceptional proficiency in rare glaucoma procedures like trabeculotomy.

Patient Consensus: Patients travel to Seoul for technology and integrated care. These services are available at major university hospitals. Dedicated international coordinators help foreigners navigate these large medical centres more easily.

What is the difference between trabeculotomy and trabeculectomy in South Korean clinics?

South Korean clinics distinguish between these glaucoma surgeries based on invasiveness and patient age. Trabeculotomy restores natural drainage and suits paediatric congenital cases. Trabeculectomy creates a new artificial channel for adult open-angle glaucoma. Leading Seoul centres like Severance Hospital and Asan Medical Center offer both techniques.

  • Patient profile: Trabeculotomy treats children while trabeculectomy is the standard for adult glaucoma cases.
  • Surgical technique: Trabeculotomy opens existing pathways whereas trabeculectomy creates a new filtering bleb.
  • Invasiveness level: Trabeculotomy is less invasive. Trabeculectomy involves removing tissue for a drainage opening.
  • Recovery time: Patients generally experience shorter recovery following trabeculotomy than the more invasive trabeculectomy.
  • Clinical benchmarks: Major Seoul hospitals like SNUBH hold Global Healthcare Accreditation for international safety.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Adult patients usually receive trabeculectomy. However, South Korean specialists at Severance Hospital often use combined approaches for complex congenital cases. Their affiliation with top US paediatric centres gives them access to specialised protocols. This expertise is reflected in the high volume of over 65,000 annual surgeries at Asan Medical Center.

Patient Consensus: Patients in the Republic of Korea find the surgical approach highly tailored to their specific glaucoma type. Parents of children with congenital glaucoma appreciate the less invasive nature of trabeculotomy. They also appreciate the noticeably faster recovery periods.

Is South Korea a popular destination for trabeculotomy surgery?

South Korea is a top-tier destination for advanced glaucoma surgery, including trabeculotomy. This is particularly true for patients seeking high-tech infrastructure in Seoul. Leading centres such as Severance Hospital and Asan Medical Center hold JCI and Newsweek Best Hospital rankings. They serve millions of international and local patients annually.

  • Clinical excellence: Asan Medical Center performs 65,000+ operations yearly with a 98% success rate in complex procedures.
  • Accredited facilities: Severance Hospital is JCI-accredited and collaborates with institutions like Johns Hopkins University.
  • Advanced technology: Hospitals use the BESTcare safety system and robotic platforms for high precision.
  • Glaucoma costs: Specialised glaucoma treatments in South Korea typically range from $3,200 to $6,500.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While South Korea excels in technology, trabeculotomy is most often used for congenital cases. These are typically in infants. Adults often receive trabeculectomy or minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). Facilities like Seoul National University Bundang Hospital handle 32,500+ operations annually. This makes them highly experienced in these specific eye interventions.

Patient Consensus: Patients find that South Korean clinics offer extremely fast access to specialists. Wait times are often under a month. The efficiency in Seoul is highly regarded. However, many travellers choose this destination for precision and technology rather than just low costs.
