"You are best !!!"
Good day to all! Finally we got our hands on writing about the treatment of our child at the Sant Joan de Deu Barselona hospital. I would like to say once again a huge thank you to Bookimed for the help in choosing a clinic. This is not just a hospital, THIS IS A SUPER HOSPITAL !!! To be honest, they did not even expect that medicine could be of such a high level. About the staff separately: from nurses to professors of the clinic, damn well, all simple, normal, kind people. I have never seen such attention to a child, literally everything is scheduled by the minute, everyone is smiling, joking. In general, the little one did not understand that he had undergone a complex operation on the spinal cord. After the operation and coming out of complex anesthesia, the child never even cried and did not experience any pain (except for changing the dressing, removing the adhesive plaster). The hospital itself is huge, EVERYTHING FOR CHILDREN, everything is in pictures, slides, balls, a dinosaur farm. Everything has been done so that the children would not be afraid of doctors, etc. And a special BIG THANKS to our neurosurgeon Jose Hinojosa Mena-Bernal with a capital letter. This is a man with golden hands and a kind heart (just works wonders)! The child began to walk on his own 5 days after the operation. Thanks to Mikki, the resuscitator, a young guy who looked after the little one after the operation, like his son. And also the hospital's translator, Mikhail, who, together with us, empathized with everything that happened, thanks to nurse Svetlana who helped in all matters related to caring for the little one, including as an interpreter, and just a good kind woman. Thanks to our curator of the hospital for organizing the stay in the clinic, cheerful, always cheerful with a smile on her face Valeria, deciding all issues of hospitalization and treatment. MANY THANKS TO ALL HONEY STAFF SANT JOAN DE DEU. You are best !!! CONTINUE SAVING THE CHILDREN AND MORE, and we, in turn, promise not to get sick anymore !! Respectfully, V.V. Solomatin

- Everything was basically good
Everything was basically good, the only thing they said was that the consultation would be an hour, and she was half an hour. Also, the information that we need to do before the consultation did not reach us from the very beginning, so it was initially not complete, so you need to ask all the questions in advance, so that there are no lost moments. In general, such a format as remote consultation is very convenient.

Expert Overview about Spina bifida (cleft spine) Treatment in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Which Spanish hospitals are internationally recognized for pediatric spina bifida treatment?

SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital and Centro Médico Teknon are premier Spanish centers for pediatric spina bifida. These facilities provide advanced in-utero fetal surgery and complex neurosurgical repairs. They maintain high ratings and international accreditations like Joint Commission International to ensure patient safety and quality.

  • Pediatric expertise: SJD Barcelona serves 450,000 patients and performs 14,000 operations annually.
  • Surgical technology: Centro Médico Teknon utilizes the Mazor Robotics Renaissance System for spinal procedures.
  • Comprehensive care: Multi-center groups like HM Madrid offer neurosciences and specialized pediatric teams.
  • High volume: Centro Médico Teknon surgeons perform over 23,500 operations per year across specialties.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many seek out Madrid for its volume, Barcelona holds a unique advantage for prenatal cases. SJD Barcelona and Centro Médico Teknon are situated in a hub where robotic-assisted tools like the Mazor Renaissance are standard. Data shows Teknon was the first in Southern Europe to implement this tech, which is vital for pediatric spinal precision.

Patient Consensus: Parents describe the environment at SJD Barcelona as a super hospital where medical staff use games and slides to reduce childhood anxiety. They note that complex spinal cord operations are managed so well that children often recover without experiencing significant pain.

What qualifications should parents check when selecting a Spanish neurosurgeon for spina bifida repair?

Parents should verify a neurosurgeon has completed MIR training in neurosurgery and holds membership in the Spanish Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery (SENEPE). Surgeons must be registered with the Spanish Society of Neurosurgery (SENEC). Prioritize specialists practicing at JCI-accredited centers like Centro Médico Teknon or SJD Barcelona.

  • Specialized board membership: Active SENEPE membership confirms dedicated pediatric neurosurgical expertise.
  • Clinical case volume: High-volume surgeons typically report better outcomes and fewer complications.
  • Multidisciplinary team access: Effective repair requires coordination with urologists and orthopedic surgeons.
  • Advanced surgical tools: Ensure the facility utilizes intraoperative neural monitoring and microscopes.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data suggests that selecting an institution like SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital, which handles over 14,000 operations annually, provides a significant safety advantage. Their specialized focus on patients under 18 years old ensures that every staff member, from resuscitators to nurses, is an expert in neonatal and pediatric recovery. This concentration of expertise often leads to faster recovery times, such as children walking within 5 days post-surgery.

Patient Consensus: Parents emphasize that the child's comfort depends on a hospital environment designed for children, featuring themes like dinosaurs to reduce fear. Many note that a kind, attentive staff helps children recover with minimal emotional distress after complex spinal cord procedures.

Can spina bifida be repaired in-utero in Spain, and when must the surgery be performed?

Spina bifida can be repaired in-utero in Spain between 20 and 26 weeks of gestation. Specialized centers like Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona Children Hospital and Vall d Hebron use prenatal surgery to close spinal defects. This intervention protects the spinal cord from amniotic fluid damage during pregnancy.

  • Target window: Surgery must occur specifically between 20 and 26 weeks of pregnancy.
  • Clinical benefits: Early repair improves motor function and reduces future needs for brain shunts.
  • Surgical techniques: Specialists use open fetal surgery or minimally invasive fetoscopic approaches with patches.
  • Eligibility criteria: Candidates undergo rigorous neurosurgical consultation to assess lesion levels and hydrocephalus degrees.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain remains a top destination for complex pediatric cases because centers like Sant Joan de Déu handle 4,000 children annually. Data shows that high-volume academic hospitals often maintain 800+ specialized doctors. This concentration of expertise allows for rapid multi-disciplinary evaluation within the tight 6-week surgical window. Choosing a center with ISO and JCI accreditations ensures the highest safety standards for both mother and baby.

Patient Consensus: Parents emphasize that every week is critical because referral delays can lead to losing eligibility for prenatal repair. They note that centers designed specifically for children help reduce a child's fear through supportive, kid-friendly environments.

What are the main surgical approaches for fetal spina bifida repair in Spain, and how do they differ?

Spanish centers like SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital primarily use open fetal surgery via minihysterotomy or fetoscopic repair. Experts specialize in early prenatal correction to improve neurological outcomes. These methods differ by uterine access, including small incisions or endoscopic ports, and affect future delivery options.

  • Open fetal surgery: Surgeons use a small uterine incision for direct and precise defect closure.
  • Fetoscopic fetal surgery: This minimally invasive technique uses cameras to preserve the parent's uterine integrity.
  • Delivery planning: Open surgery requires Cesarean delivery, while fetoscopic methods may allow vaginal birth.
  • Surgical precision: Direct visualization in open surgery often results in shorter operating times.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many focus on the method, the facility's pediatric volume is a critical quality signal. SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital serves 450,000 patients annually and performs 14,000 operations. This high volume across a dedicated 800-doctor team provides experience that general hospitals cannot easily match for complex fetal neurosurgery.

Patient Consensus: Parents describe these facilities as supportive environments where specialists like Dr. Jose Hinojosa Mena-Bernal perform life-changing procedures. They emphasize that while the surgery is complex, children often show mobility improvements within days of delivery or birth.

What happens if in-utero surgery is not possible and the repair is performed after birth?

Postnatal repair involves surgically closing the spinal defect within 24 to 48 hours after delivery. While prenatal surgery reduces some risks, postnatal repair is a standard, effective approach. It prioritizes maternal safety and allows the pregnancy to reach full term, avoiding extreme prematurity complications.

  • Surgery timing: Surgeons typically perform the repair within 2 days of birth.
  • Primary goal: Closure prevents infections and stops cerebrospinal fluid from leaking.
  • Neurological status: Repair protects anatomy but cannot restore nerves lost during pregnancy.
  • Follow-up care: Patients may require shunt placement or future orthopedic and urology support.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain hosts one of Europe’s top 3 pediatric institutions, Sant Joan de Déu – Barcelona Children's Hospital. It handles 450,000 patient visits annually. This high volume is crucial because neurosurgeons in such centers manage complex cases daily. Choosing a tertiary center with massive patient influx often ensures integrated access to neonatal intensive care and specialized rehabilitation teams immediately after the initial spinal closure.

Patient Consensus: Parents note that children can begin walking just days after successful surgery. They emphasize that while the wait for birth is stressful, seeing the child active soon after recovery provides immense relief.

How do Spanish centers monitor and manage hydrocephalus, a common spina bifida complication?

Spanish centers manage hydrocephalus through continuous neuroimaging and multi-layered intracranial pressure monitoring. Centers prioritize radiation-free rapid-sequence MRI and cranial ultrasounds. Specialized neurosurgery units at SJD Barcelona and Centro Médico Teknon integrate diagnostic surveillance with surgical interventions like valves or endoscopic bypasses.

  • Diagnostic monitoring: MRI and ultrasound track ventricular size to avoid radiation exposure.
  • Clinical biometrics: Routine head circumference and fontanel checks monitor structural changes in infants.
  • Surgical intervention: Computerized neuronavigation systems ensure precise placement of ventriculoperitoneal shunt tubes.
  • Pressure management: Continuous intracranial sensors distinguish stable ventriculomegaly from progressive high-pressure hydrocephalus.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many leading centers like Hospital Ruber Internacional serve over 25,000 patients annually, SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital handles 450,000. This massive volume creates a high-density environment where neurosurgeons like Dr. Jose Hinojosa Mena-Bernal manage complex spina bifida complications daily. Such institutions offer specialized pediatric molecular laboratories that provide diagnostic depth rarely found in general adult neurosurgery units.

Patient Consensus: Parents note that Spanish hospitals create a very supportive, child-friendly environment that helps reduce surgical anxiety. They emphasize the importance of tracking subtle changes like vomiting or sleepiness, as these often signal the need for urgent shunt revision.

What long-term multidisciplinary rehabilitation programs are available in Spain for children with spina bifida?

Spain provides intensive multidisciplinary rehabilitation for children with spina bifida through integrated programs in Barcelona and Madrid. These tracks combine robotic gait training, neuro-urology, and orthopedic monitoring. Specialized centers like SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital and Centro Médico Teknon manage care from infancy through age 18.

  • Coordinated care: Programs integrate neurosurgery, urology, orthopedics, and physiotherapy for lifelong developmental support.
  • Advanced technology: Facilities like Centro Médico Teknon utilize robotic-assisted systems like Mazor Robotics for complex cases.
  • Specialized departments: SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital hosts one of the largest pediatric rehabilitation departments in Europe.
  • Bladder management: Long-term tracks prioritize neurogenic bladder and bowel programs to ensure patient independence.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many focus on surgery, the strongest long-term success comes from clinics treating high volumes. SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital serves 450,000 patients annually. This massive scale allows for specialized sub-units like adapted sports schools. Our data shows these integrated lifestyle elements significantly improve social integration compared to fragmented clinical care.

Patient Consensus: Parents emphasize that success depends on boring daily routines like catheter schedules and skin checks. They highly value hospitals that feel child-friendly, noting that dinosaur-themed wards and supportive translators make complex recovery much easier for the child.
