Patients save around 55% compared to US prices. Standard Spanish medical packages generally include preoperative diagnostic tests, the surgical procedure, and initial follow-up examinations.

Laser eye surgery in Spain: Your Travel Plan

Day 1: Arrival in Spain
  • You should arrive at the airport in Spain and proceed to your pre-booked accommodation. Ensure you have all necessary documents, including your passport and any previous eye exam results.
  • Rest and adjust to the local time zone to minimize fatigue before your initial consultation.
  • Review any instructions or reminders provided by the clinic regarding your upcoming appointments.
Day 2: Initial Consultation and Eye Examination
  • You need to attend your scheduled initial consultation and comprehensive eye examination. This is crucial to determine the health of your cornea and confirm your eligibility for LASIK.
  • The consultation typically includes a detailed assessment of your eye health, with tests like corneal topography and wavefront analysis to tailor the procedure to your specific needs.
  • Discuss with the ophthalmologist any concerns, such as sagging eyelids or changes in eye shape, which may affect your suitability for LASIK.
  • Expect to pay for this initial consultation, which may range from €250 to €650, depending on the clinic.
  • You will receive confirmation of your surgery date if deemed eligible.
Day 3: Pre-Surgery Preparation
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses as advised by your doctor, typically for at least 24 hours before the surgery, to ensure accurate measurements of your cornea.
  • Refrain from using makeup, lotions, or perfumes on the day of the procedure to prevent any contamination.
  • Arrange for transportation to and from the clinic, as you will not be able to drive post-surgery.
  • Ensure you have sunglasses ready for after the procedure to protect your eyes from bright light.
Day 4: Custom LASIK Surgery
  • You should arrive at the clinic at the scheduled time for your custom LASIK surgery, which will utilize femtosecond laser technology for superior precision.
  • The procedure is painless and quick, typically taking around 15 minutes per eye.
  • Immediately after the procedure, you may experience some discomfort and blurred vision, which is normal.
  • Follow the post-operative care instructions provided by your ophthalmologist, including the use of prescribed eye drops to aid in healing and prevent infection.
Day 5: Post-Surgery Follow-Up
  • Attend a follow-up appointment at the clinic to ensure your eyes are healing correctly and to address any concerns you may have.
  • Continue to follow the aftercare instructions meticulously, including avoiding rubbing your eyes and protecting them from water and dust.
  • Limit screen time and avoid strenuous activities for the first few days to facilitate recovery.
Day 6-7: Recovery and Exploration
  • Continue to rest and allow your eyes to heal. Vision improvement is typically immediate, but full stabilization may take a few weeks.
  • If your ophthalmologist approves, you may begin to explore the local area, ensuring to wear sunglasses outdoors to protect your eyes from UV rays.
  • Stay hydrated and maintain a healthy diet to support your recovery.
Day 8: Final Follow-Up and Departure Preparation
  • Attend a final follow-up appointment to confirm that your recovery is on track and that there are no complications.
  • Discuss any long-term care instructions, including when you can resume normal activities like driving or sports.
  • Prepare for your departure, ensuring you have all post-operative care instructions and contact details for the clinic should you need further assistance once home.
Day 9: Departure from Spain
  • Check out from your accommodation and head to the airport for your return flight home.

Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff
Attentive and caring staff, friendly and welcoming, very clean clinic. There was a significant difference between the base price, which was between €5,000 and €8,000, and the only additional examination, which was €150. To our surprise, we were asked to pay €9,750, which is a difference of €1,650. I wanted to have cataract surgery on my left eye and was given a quote of €5,610, which I found excessive given that I had already paid €9,750. Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff.
The kindness of all the medical staff
1-We couldn't find a cushion after a vitrectomy, even after searching all over Barcelona, so I suffered without a cushion for my neck. 2-Leaving without the medical report, promising to send it to us by email, which we still haven't received after 11 days.

"We have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr
We were examined in one of the clinics of this network - the Dexeus hospital. I am very grateful to the medical coordinators of Bookimed for their help in organizing the consultation there. We have a very complex ophthalmological problem that we have been trying to solve for many years. We traveled to different countries, consulted with very experienced doctors in the largest university clinics in Germany. But unfortunately, none of them had encountered similar situations before and could not prescribe us an effective treatment to solve the problem. And when we arrived at the Dexeus hospital, we were able to get a very highly qualified consultation, conduct serious examinations, and now we have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr. Verges, who turned out to be the first doctor who successfully treated previously such complex types of eye allergies as my son had. The clinic of this network pleasantly surprised us with the most modern approach to examinations, a high level of specialists and cutting-edge equipment. Absolutely not inferior to well-known German clinics. We will now recommend her to our friends and family.

Our Laser eye surgery Techniques: What Suits You Best?

When considering Laser eye surgery, it’s important to understand the different techniques and which is best suited for you. Here’s a concise comparison of popular options:

LASIK eye surgery

LASIK surgery is a laser vision correction procedure that reshapes the cornea to improve visual acuity.

Pros: LASIK surgery offers quick vision improvement with 96% of patients achieving desired vision. Fast recovery time makes it convenient for most individuals.
Cons: Potential for dry eyes and glare, affecting 20% of patients post-surgery. Not suitable for individuals with thin corneas or severe vision issues.
Effectiveness: 96%
Duration: 30 minutes
Recovery: 1-2 days
Best for: Mild to moderate myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism correction. Ideal for those with healthy corneas.
Prices: Cost of LASIK eye surgery in Spain from $1,500

ReLEx SMILE eye surgery

A minimally invasive laser vision correction procedure that reshapes the cornea to correct refractive errors like myopia and astigmatism.

Pros: Less invasive than LASIK surgery with no flap creation, reducing the risk of dry eye syndrome by up to 40%. Faster recovery times and fewer complications due to its small incision. Suitable for patients with thin corneas.
Cons: Limited availability for treating hyperopia compared to other refractive surgeries. Requires specialized equipment, which is not available in all clinics.
Effectiveness: 96% success rate in achieving 20/40 vision or better.
Duration: Approximately 30 minutes.
Recovery: 1-2 days.
Best for: Individuals with myopia up to -10 diopters and astigmatism up to 5 diopters.

LASEK eye surgery

This procedure involves reshaping the cornea to correct vision using laser technology, combining aspects of LASIK and PRK.

Pros: Suitable for patients with thin corneas as it preserves more corneal tissue. Lower risk of dry eyes compared to LASIK surgery. Offers a higher safety margin for those with specific eye conditions.
Cons: Longer recovery time than LASIK and ReLEx SMILE. Discomfort post-surgery can last longer, up to a week.
Effectiveness: 95% of patients achieve 20/40 vision or better.
Duration: 30 minutes per eye.
Recovery: 5-7 days.
Best for: Individuals with thin corneas and mild to moderate myopia or astigmatism.
Prices: Cost of LASEK eye surgery in Spain from $1,200

IntraLase Laser Eye Surgery

A precise laser technique used in vision correction, involving the creation of a corneal flap for improved visual outcomes.

Pros: Provides enhanced precision and safety due to laser technology, reducing flap-related complications by up to 95%. Offers better visual acuity improvement compared to manual methods.
Cons: Longer procedure time than LASIK surgery, with a potential increase in temporary eye discomfort. May not be suitable for all corneal shapes.
Effectiveness: Achieves a success rate of 98% in correcting vision to 20/20 or better.
Duration: The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes.
Recovery: Recovery typically spans 1-3 days.
Best for: Individuals with mild to moderate myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, requiring precise corneal reshaping.

Photorefractive Keratectomy

A type of laser eye surgery that reshapes the cornea to correct vision problems such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

Pros: Suitable for patients with thin corneas or dry eyes, which may not be ideal for LASIK surgery. Provides a safe alternative with a 95% success rate in achieving 20/40 vision or better.
Cons: Longer recovery time than LASIK, often taking several weeks for full visual stabilization. Some patients experience temporary discomfort or haze during healing.
Effectiveness: 95
Duration: 30 minutes
Recovery: 7-10 days
Best for: Individuals with thin corneas, dry eyes, or those not suitable for LASIK. Addresses nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
Prices: Cost of Photorefractive keratectomy in Spain from $1,500

FAQ about Laser eye surgery in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Will surgeons speak English?

Surgeons performing laser eye surgery in Spain typically speak English fluently, particularly within Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited facilities. Major treatment centers in Barcelona and Madrid cater extensively to international patients, ensuring medical teams and support staff provide clear communication throughout the vision correction process.

  • Clinic locations: Centers in Barcelona and Marbella specialize in treating Northern European patients.
  • Medical education: Surgeons often complete fellowships at institutions like Harvard Medical School.
  • International societies: Many doctors hold active memberships in American and European refractive surgery boards.
  • Patient support: Major hospitals confirm English-speaking medical teams are standard for international departments.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows specific clinics like Quirónsalud Marbella serve 30,000 patients annually, primarily from Central and Northern Europe. Surgeons there, such as Nabil Ragaei Kamel, maintain high volume by offering Femto LASIK and PRK explicitly to English-speaking travelers.

Patient Consensus: Patients find that surgeons in major Spanish cities speak English well. They recommend verifying language proficiency for both the doctor and recovery staff during the booking process.

What if something goes wrong after I return home?

If issues arise after laser eye surgery in Spain, maintain immediate contact with your Spanish surgical team. Most complications like dry eyes or stabilized vision distortions are manageable through remote guidance or local prescriptions. Serious or urgent concerns require a local ophthalmologist visit while sharing Span-based medical records for continuity.

  • Follow-up protocol: Vision requires 6 months to settle and 2 years for full corneal healing.
  • Medical documentation: Keep all pre-op maps and post-op surgical reports for local specialized care.
  • Remote consultation: JCI-accredited clinics like Centro Médico Teknon offer online coordination for international patients.
  • Emergency steps: Visit a local eye specialist immediately if sudden vision loss or pain occurs.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While basic packages starting at $3,300 cover standard post-op meds, top-tier surgeons like Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel perform over 3,600 annual surgeries. This high volume often means they have established protocols for managing international recovery via teleconsultation. Always confirm your specific optical zone size before departure to help local doctors understand your procedure.

Patient Consensus: Many patients experience night halos or dry eyes during the 6-month stabilization period. Most recommend keeping preservative-free artificial tears ready and having a trusted local ophthalmologist briefed on your surgery.

When can I fly back home?

Most patients can fly 2 to 3 days after laser eye surgery in Spain. While these procedures are outpatient, you must attend a mandatory follow-up appointment 1 day after surgery. This ensures your corneas are healing correctly before exposure to pressurized cabin air.

  • Follow-up requirement: Complete the 1-day post-operative exam before leaving the clinic city.
  • Recovery timeline: Vision stabilizes over 2 to 4 days after the initial procedure.
  • Travel precautions: Cabin dryness significantly irritates eyes; apply prescribed lubricating drops every hour.
  • Clinical stay: JCI-accredited facilities in Spain recommend 5 to 7 days for full stabilization.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish clinics like Quirónsalud Marbella and Teknon emphasize a 5-day hotel stay for a reason. Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel performs 3,600+ surgeries yearly and notes that early cabin pressure can cause discomfort. Staying longer allows doctors to manage any immediate light sensitivity before your flight.

Patient Consensus: Travelers advise staying near the clinic for 2 nights to ensure easy post-op access. They recommend resting in dark rooms rather than sightseeing to speed up initial vision clearing.

Is post-operative care included?

Post-operative care for laser eye surgery in Spain is typically bundled into the surgical package. Most clinics include immediate follow-up examinations, mandatory check-ups for the first 2 months, and initial recovery medications. These services are provided on an outpatient basis as most laser procedures require 0 days of hospitalization.

  • Follow-up schedule: Standard check-ups occur on day 2, week 1, week 3, and month 2.
  • Included services: Packages often cover preoperative tests, surgeon consultations, and essential post-op medications.
  • Clinical exclusion: Long-term evaluations, such as 1-year follow-ups, usually require separate additional payments.
  • Travel logistics: Accommodation and airport transfers are rarely included in standard Spanish vision correction packages.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a significant value gap between top-tier facilities. While Centro Médico Teknon offers prestige and celebrity-level care for $6,250, JCI-accredited clinics like Quirónsalud Marbella provide similar high-volume surgeon expertise for roughly $3,500. Patients should prioritize packages that explicitly include all recovery eye drops, as these costs vary significantly across Spanish pharmacies.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the need to confirm which eye drops are included for the full recovery. Many suggest budgeting for travel costs if returning to Spain for mandatory early-stage check-ups.

How long do I need to stay in Spain?

You should plan to stay in Spain for 5 to 7 days for laser eye surgery. While the procedure is an outpatient service taking only 10 minutes, clinics require a mandatory follow-up the morning after surgery to ensure proper corneal healing.

  • Hospital stay: None. Laser eye surgery is performed as a same-day outpatient procedure.
  • Mandatory follow-up: Clinic visits are required within 24 hours to check for inflammation.
  • Recovery window: Plan 3 days of rest before flying to manage early photosensitivity.
  • Vision stabilization: Normal activities usually resume by day 3 despite minor vision fluctuations.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a clear distinction in package stays between cities: Barcelona clinics like Centro Médico Teknon often suggest 7 days, while Marbella facilities like Quirónsalud Marbella recommend 5 days. Since surgeon Nabil Ragaei Kamel performs over 3,600 annual surgeries, these shorter stays reflect high-volume clinical efficiency without compromising safety.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend a minimum of 3 days to accommodate the essential next-day check-up. Most advice emphasizes avoiding immediate travel to allow the initial light sensitivity to subside comfortably.

What is the process for international patients?

The international patient process in Spain involves medical record submission, a pre-travel review, and a structured in-person timeline. Local clinics like Centro Médico Teknon provide dedicated coordinators to facilitate Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited care, ensuring high safety standards for specialized laser corrections like LASIK and ReLEx SMILE.

  • Documentation phase: Upload corneal topography and refraction history for clinical approval before booking flights.
  • Pre-operative screening: Attend a mandatory in-person consultation and stability check upon arrival in Spain.
  • Treatment timeline: Procedures are typically outpatient, but plan for 1–3 days in-country for recovery.
  • Mandatory follow-up: Patients must attend a clinical re-examination exactly 1 day after the surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While Spain is generally more expensive than Turkey, the value lies in specialized surgeon volume. Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel at Quirónsalud Marbella performs over 3,600 annual surgeries, providing expertise that typically costs $5,500 in the US. Patients can save up to 55% while accessing JCI-accredited facilities that often serve high-profile international clients.

Patient Consensus: Expect to wait about 1 week for medical approval after submitting records. Most international patients recommend confirming if the clinic offers free touch-up surgeries if initial vision results need adjustment.

What are the best clinics/cities for laser eye surgery?

Barcelona and Madrid are Spain's premier cities for laser eye surgery, hosting Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited facilities like Centro Médico Teknon. These hubs offer advanced techniques such as ReLEx SMILE and Femto-LASIK, with procedures starting at $2,000 to $3,000.

  • Top clinics: Centro Médico Teknon in Barcelona and Quirónsalud Marbella in Marbella lead.
  • Leading surgeons: Dr. Jordi Mones and Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel each have 900+ surgeries.
  • Advanced technology: Facilities offer ReLEx SMILE, Femto-LASIK, and all-laser PRK for rapid recovery.
  • Accreditation standards: Major centers maintain JCI and ISO certifications for high-level safety and quality.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain’s elite clinics like Centro Médico Teknon are preferred by high-profile athletes and celebrities. This suggests a unique standard of post-operative discretion and precision. While costs are higher than in Turkey, the volume of 3,600+ annual surgeries per specialist indicates exceptional clinical reliability.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that choosing the top 5 reputable clinics in Madrid and Barcelona is vital for safety. They value the long-term follow-up care and English-speaking staff available at high-volume Spanish centers.
