Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff
Attentive and caring staff, friendly and welcoming, very clean clinic. There was a significant difference between the base price, which was between €5,000 and €8,000, and the only additional examination, which was €150. To our surprise, we were asked to pay €9,750, which is a difference of €1,650. I wanted to have cataract surgery on my left eye and was given a quote of €5,610, which I found excessive given that I had already paid €9,750. Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff.
The kindness of all the medical staff
1-We couldn't find a cushion after a vitrectomy, even after searching all over Barcelona, so I suffered without a cushion for my neck. 2-Leaving without the medical report, promising to send it to us by email, which we still haven't received after 11 days.

"We have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr
We were examined in one of the clinics of this network - the Dexeus hospital. I am very grateful to the medical coordinators of Bookimed for their help in organizing the consultation there. We have a very complex ophthalmological problem that we have been trying to solve for many years. We traveled to different countries, consulted with very experienced doctors in the largest university clinics in Germany. But unfortunately, none of them had encountered similar situations before and could not prescribe us an effective treatment to solve the problem. And when we arrived at the Dexeus hospital, we were able to get a very highly qualified consultation, conduct serious examinations, and now we have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr. Verges, who turned out to be the first doctor who successfully treated previously such complex types of eye allergies as my son had. The clinic of this network pleasantly surprised us with the most modern approach to examinations, a high level of specialists and cutting-edge equipment. Absolutely not inferior to well-known German clinics. We will now recommend her to our friends and family.

FAQ about LASIK eye surgery in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is LASIK in Spain safe?

LASIK in Spain is safe, regulated under European Union clinical standards and overseen by the Spanish Ministry of Health. High safety levels are maintained through Joint Commission International (JCI) and ISO-certified facilities, with specialized surgeons often performing over 3,600 annual operations using advanced femtosecond laser technology.

  • Expert surgeons: Doctors like Jordi Mones at Centro Médico Teknon hold prestigious Harvard and Massachusetts fellowships.
  • Advanced technology: Clinics utilize all-laser approaches including Femtosecond LASIK, ReLEx SMILE, and LASEK techniques.
  • Accredited facilities: Top centers like Hospital Ruber Internacional maintain multiple ISO certifications and JCI accreditation.
  • Proven outcomes: Procedures typically last 10 minutes with most patients mobile within 24 to 48 hours.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While Spain ranks 5th globally for medical requests, the safety gap between clinics is significant. Data shows top-tier facilities like Centro Médico Teknon are the primary choice for professional athletes and high-profile individuals. Choosing these established, high-volume centers ensures access to surgeons who manage thousands of cases yearly, which is the most reliable predictor of success.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that the procedure is pain-free thanks to anesthetic drops, though clinic selection is critical. The general consensus highlights that while costs are lower than in the US, verifying the specific surgeon reputation is more important than the location.

Does LASIK in Spain hurt?

LASIK in Spain is physically painless during the procedure due to high-potency topical numbing drops. Patients typically feel only a temporary sensation of pressure during the corneal flap creation. While the surgery is quick, post-operative discomfort usually peaks shortly after the anesthesia wears off.

  • Anesthesia method: Surgeons use specialized numbing eye drops to eliminate pain throughout the surgery.
  • Suction phase: You may feel mild, brief pressure for roughly 20 to 30 seconds.
  • Post-op transition: Discomfort often begins 20 to 30 minutes after surgery as numbing effects fade.
  • Initial recovery: Burning or gritty sensations typically last between 5 hours and 3 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While LASIK is physically painless, the technical approach in Spain significantly impacts your comfort. Clinics like Centro Médico Teknon offer bladeless Femtosecond LASIK, which uses lasers instead of blades for the flap. Data shows this technique reduces mechanical trauma, often leading to a smoother transition when the anesthesia wears off.

Patient Consensus: The procedure itself is easy, but the real challenge starts 30 minutes later. Patients recommend taking pain relief immediately and sleeping through the initial burning phase to avoid peak discomfort.

How can I choose the best clinic in Spain?

To choose the best LASIK clinic in Spain, prioritize facilities with Joint Commission International accreditation and surgeons who perform over 3,000 annual procedures. Look for centers offering advanced Femtosecond LASIK or ReLEx SMILE technology to ensure high safety standards and rapid visual recovery.

  • Accreditation standards: Select JCI-accredited clinics like Centro Médico Teknon to guarantee international safety protocols.
  • Surgeon volume: Highly rated experts like Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel perform 3,600+ annual surgeries.
  • Advanced technology: Ensure access to cutting-edge tools like Gamma Knife ICON and 3-Tesla MRI.
  • Specialized care: Centers like Hospital Ruber Internacional offer 15 luxury suites for international patients.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many choose Spain for its EU-regulated safety, the real differentiator is individual surgeon credentials over clinic brand. Dr. Jordi Mones at Centro Médico Teknon is a globally recognized expert from Harvard, making his practice a top choice for celebrities and athletes who prioritize specialized retinal expertise alongside refractive surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that staying within the EU is worth the higher cost for easier post-operative management. Many recommend SMILE technology specifically to preserve corneal nerves and reduce common issues like dry eyes.

How long does LASIK surgery take?

LASIK surgery in Spain is a highly efficient outpatient procedure that typically takes only 10 minutes total for both eyes. While the actual laser application lasts under 60 seconds per eye, patients should plan for a 1.5 to 3 hour clinical visit to cover prep and post-operative checks.

  • Actual laser time: Reshaping the cornea takes only 20 to 60 seconds per eye.
  • Clinical visit duration: Expect 30 to 45 minutes for preparation, surgery, and immediate discharge.
  • Vision recovery: Most patients gain functional, clear vision within 24 hours of the procedure.
  • Anesthesia application: Topical anesthetic eye drops ensure the entire session remains completely painless.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain ranks among the top 5 global destinations for eye surgery, with centers like Centro Médico Teknon maintaining JCI accreditation. Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel in Marbella performs over 3,600 eye surgeries annually. This high volume often results in more efficient 10-minute procedures compared to lower-volume centers.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that any minor pressure or discomfort lasts only 15 seconds per eye. Many suggest using lubricating drops every 3-4 hours starting 2 days after surgery for comfort.

How long is the recovery period after surgery?

Most patients experience significant visual improvement within 24 to 48 hours after LASIK in Spain. While functional vision returns quickly, achieving full corneal stability usually requires 2 to 3 months. High-impact activities or military clearance typically require 1 year of monitoring following the procedure.

  • Hospital stay: Patients usually spend 1 day at the clinic for this outpatient procedure.
  • Initial recovery: Vision often stabilizes enough for most daily activities within 48 hours.
  • Stability period: Doctors perform a full evaluation of visual stability at 2 to 3 months.
  • Activity restrictions: Wait 1 year before engaging in high-impact sports or specialized military service.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain attracts patients to elite centers like Centro Médico Teknon because of surgeon volume. Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel performs over 3,600 eye surgeries annually. This high repetition contributes to the rapid 24-hour visual recovery many patients experience. When choosing a clinic, prioritize those using bladeless Femtosecond laser technology for the fastest healing times.

Patient Consensus: Many feel confident returning to light tasks the day after surgery. However, patients emphasize not confusing this with more complex procedures like vitrectomy, which require much longer recovery periods.

Why choose Spain for LASIK?

Spain is a top choice for LASIK due to its strict European Union safety standards, JCI-accredited facilities, and expert surgeons. Patients benefit from advanced techniques like Femtosecond LASIK and ReLEx SMILE, often achieving significant savings while receiving care from world-renowned specialists.

  • Advanced technology: Clinics utilize bladeless Femtosecond laser and SMILE techniques for precision.
  • Expert surgeons: Specialists like Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel perform over 3,600 surgeries annually.
  • Strict regulations: Facilities follow rigorous EU clinical protocols and Joint Commission International standards.
  • Quick recovery: Most patients report improved vision by day 2 after the 10-minute procedure.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While lower prices exist, elite Spanish clinics like Centro Médico Teknon focus on high-profile patient safety. Their Femtosecond LASIK packages prioritize quality with JCI-certified environments. Data suggests that choosing these high-volume centers reduces risk, as they serve over 10,000 international patients annually.

Patient Consensus: Patients describe the 10-minute painless procedure as life-changing. Many suggest focusing on 4–5 reputable centers in Madrid or Barcelona to ensure the best surgical outcomes.

Which are the best cities for LASIK in Spain?

Barcelona and Madrid are the premier cities for LASIK in Spain, offering JCI-accredited facilities and internationally trained surgeons. These hubs provide advanced techniques like Femtosecond LASIK and ReLEx SMILE, ensuring high safety standards and precision for international patients seeking vision correction.

  • Barcelona clinical leader: Centro Médico Teknon holds JCI accreditation and serves high-profile athletes and celebrities.
  • Madrid hospital standards: Quironsalud Madrid and Hospital Ruber Internacional offer world-class research and diagnostic technology.
  • Marbella specialized care: Clinics like Quirónsalud Marbella feature award-winning surgeons performing 3,600+ annual eye procedures.
  • Technological availability: Top centers utilize bladeless VisuMax lasers and modern RELEX SMILE for faster recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While Madrid and Barcelona are primary hubs, Barcelona stands out for its concentration of centuries-old ophthalmology legacies. Some clinics here, like Centro Médico Teknon, manage over 23,500 operations annually. This high volume often translates into surgeons having significantly more experience with complex corneal profiles than those in smaller regional clinics.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that Barcelona is a global reference point for eye surgery, often preferring its specialized centers over general hospitals. Many suggest choosing clinics with established 30-plus year reputations to ensure the highest standard of follow-up care.
