Upper Eyelid Surgery in Thailand: Your Travel Plan

Day 1: Arrival in Thailand
  • Upon landing in Thailand, ensure you have all necessary documents: passport, visa, and any medical paperwork for your upper eyelid surgery.
  • Check into your hotel. If you arranged transportation with the clinic, they might pick you up from the airport.
  • Rest and acclimate to the local time zone. You should be well-rested for your pre-surgery appointments.
  • Avoid alcohol and maintain a light diet to prepare your body for the upcoming medical procedures.
Day 2: Pre-Surgery Appointment
  • Attend your pre-surgery appointment at the clinic. This includes a full medical check-up, possibly involving blood tests, chest X-rays, and an EKG to ensure you are fit for surgery.
  • Discuss the details of the upper eyelid surgery with your surgeon. The procedure typically involves outlining and removing excess skin and fatty tissue using fine electrocautery to control bleeding.
  • Review any necessary pre-operative instructions, such as stopping aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications 7 days before surgery.
  • Make the full payment for the surgery. Ensure you have prepared the payment as per the clinic's requirements.
  • Confirm the time of your surgery scheduled for the next day.
Day 3: Surgery Day
  • Arrive at the clinic at the scheduled time. Wear comfortable clothing and avoid wearing makeup or jewelry.
  • The surgery will be performed under local anesthesia. The incision will follow the natural contour of the upper eyelid to ensure inconspicuous scarring.
  • After the procedure, you will be moved to a recovery room. You will be monitored until you are stable enough to return to your hotel.
  • Receive post-operative instructions, including how to care for your incision and any prescribed medications.
  • Arrange for a follow-up appointment to monitor your recovery.
Day 4: Post-Operative Care
  • Rest at your hotel. Avoid strenuous activities and keep your head elevated to reduce swelling.
  • Follow the clinic's instructions for wound care and medication. This may include using cold compresses and taking prescribed pain relief.
  • Stay hydrated and maintain a nutritious diet to aid in recovery.
  • Contact the clinic if you experience any unusual symptoms, such as excessive swelling or bleeding.
Day 5-6: Recovery Period
  • Continue to rest and avoid activities that may strain your eyes or increase blood pressure.
  • Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments at the clinic. These are crucial for assessing your healing progress.
  • Adhere to any additional instructions provided by your surgeon to ensure optimal healing.
  • Refrain from smoking, as it can significantly impede the healing process.
Day 7: Final Follow-Up and Preparation for Departure
  • Visit the clinic for a final follow-up appointment. The surgeon will check your progress and remove any non-dissolvable stitches, if applicable.
  • Discuss any concerns or questions with your surgeon. This is an opportunity to address any issues before returning home.
  • Receive clearance from the surgeon for travel. Ensure you have all necessary documentation for post-operative care once you return home.
  • Prepare for your departure from Thailand. Confirm your flight details and arrange transportation to the airport.
Day 8: Departure from Thailand
  • Check out of your hotel. Ensure you have all personal belongings and medical documents.
  • Arrive at the airport with sufficient time before your flight. Consider arranging for assistance if you require help with luggage.
  • During the flight, follow any additional care instructions, such as wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes.
  • Upon arriving home, continue to follow your surgeon's post-operative advice. Schedule any recommended follow-up appointments with your local physician.

I enjoyed my experience, due to staff being friendly and understanding . I felt very comfortable and understood. I would definitely recommend this clinic to anyone. I got lipo and a BBL done, so as you can imagine that was quite scary. But the medical team are very calm and reassuring.

The anesthesiologist never spoke to me personally although I had concerns about general anesthesia. I was feeling sick and sleepy after surgery, so I was not able to ask for cold packs to minimize swelling and bruising till hours later. I think the nursing staff should have initiated it, or at least offered the cold packs. I had significant swelling and bruising for several days. I looked frightening the first week, so much so that I couldn't use 'face recognition' app. I still don't like 'the new look' of my face. Feel like it has been pulled too tight. And the extra folds of the eyelids which was the reason I wanted corrective surgery, are still present and not improved.

My only issue was the availability of staff after my surgery. I was placed in a room and was only checked on once during my 3 hours recovery. I had to call a nurse to ask if I could discharged.I was fortunate that my husband was with me.

FAQ about Upper Eyelid Surgery in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is it safe to get upper eyelid surgery in Thailand?

Upper eyelid surgery in Thailand is safe and reliable when performed at internationally accredited hospitals like Yanhee or Bumrungrad. These facilities maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) standards, matching US safety protocols. Leading clinics report 0% complication rates through strict surgical oversight and advanced technology.

  • Clinic accreditation: Over 60 Thai hospitals hold JCI accreditation for international safety standards.
  • Surgeon expertise: Surgeons like Dr. Palapong Chayangsu hold International Board Certification in Facial Plastic Surgery.
  • Safety record: Asia Cosmetic Hospital and Sikarin Hospital report 0% post-surgery complication rates.
  • Recovery period: A 2-week stay is recommended for monitoring before flying back home.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many seek Thailand for generic plastic surgery, the safest outcomes come from oculoplastic specialists. Surgeons like Dr. Warangkana Chaivong at Wansiri Hospital are ophthalmology board-certified. This specific training in eye anatomy provides a higher safety margin than a general plastic surgeon.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize choosing JCI-accredited facilities to ensure predictable results. Many advise scheduling a full 14-day stay to manage initial swelling and attend all follow-up appointments comfortably.

What are the risks and possible complications?

Upper eyelid surgery in Thailand is generally safe, but potential complications include asymmetry, temporary dry eyes, and swelling. Patients may experience lagophthalmos, where eyes cannot fully close, or minor site infections. Choosing JCI-accredited facilities like Yanhee International Hospital significantly reduces these risks through standardized sterile protocols.

  • Asymmetry: Uneven eyelid folds may occur, sometimes requiring minor surgical revisions.
  • Dry eyes: Aggressive fat removal can cause temporary or persistent ocular dryness.
  • Infection risks: Thailand's high humidity requires extra care to ensure proper wound healing.
  • Hematoma: Post-operative bruising and swelling are common but usually subside within 14 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many search for the lowest price, the safest results come from volume. Surgeons at Asia Cosmetic Hospital maintain a 0% complication record by involving cardiologists in surgical supervision. High-volume centers like Yanhee, with 450,000 annual patients, offer more predictable outcomes for double eyelid creation than smaller boutique clinics.

Patient Consensus: Many patients emphasize requesting conservative skin removal to avoid a startled look. Frequent advice includes budgeting for a 10-day stay to ensure stitches are removed before flying home.

Which clinics have the highest reputation for international patients?

Bumrungrad International Hospital and Yanhee International Hospital maintain the highest reputation for international patients in Thailand. These facilities combine Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation with dedicated support for global travelers, serving over 1 million patients annually across specialized departments for aesthetic and complex surgery.

  • International volume: Bumrungrad serves 520,000+ foreign patients from 190 countries annually.
  • Specialized expertise: Yanhee International Hospital employs 180 doctors across 36 specialized departments.
  • Verified safety: Asia Cosmetic Hospital maintains a 0% post-surgery complication rate.
  • Global recognition: Bumrungrad consistently ranks in Newsweek World Best Hospitals list.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Reputation often aligns with clinical volume and specialized scale. Bumrungrad and Yanhee lead because they function as full-scale medical ecosystems with 400+ beds and hundreds of doctors. While boutique clinics offer personalized care, these large institutions have the infrastructure to manage international logistics, such as visa extensions and 24/7 onsite medical monitoring, which smaller centers often outsource to nearby hotels.

Patient Consensus: Travelers consistently highlight the warmer, more personalized care in Thai clinics compared to Western hospitals. They emphasize the importance of English-fluent coordinators for managing recovery logistics and visa updates during extended stays.

What is the expected recovery timeline?

Upper eyelid surgery recovery in Thailand typically takes 4 to 6 weeks for complete internal healing. Initial swelling and bruising usually peak within the first 3 to 5 days. Most visible surgical signs fade sufficiently for patients to resume social activities within 7 to 14 days.

  • Peak recovery: Swelling and bruising are most prominent between days 3 and 5.
  • Stitch removal: Surgeons typically remove non-dissolvable sutures 5 to 7 days after the procedure.
  • Social readiness: Most patients feel comfortable appearing in public after 10 to 14 days.
  • Final results: Residual micro-swelling disappears entirely, revealing final eyelid contours within 1 to 3 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thailand's high-volume centers like Yanhee International Hospital or Bumrungrad International Hospital often perform thousands of eyelid surgeries yearly. Data shows patients at these specialized hubs report 70-80% normal appearance by week 2. For international travelers, we recommend factoring in 2-3 days of extra rest to manage jet lag alongside initial post-op swelling.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that religious icing during the first 48 hours is vital for managing bruising. Many suggest planning for 10-14 days of downtime before traveling home or returning to work to ensure a stress-free transition.

How long should I plan to stay in Thailand for the surgery?

Plan a total stay of 7 to 10 days in Thailand for upper eyelid surgery to ensure safe recovery and professional stitch removal. While the outpatient procedure takes about 1 to 2 hours, surgeons require this window to monitor swelling and confirm your fit-to-fly status.

  • Arrival timing: Arrive 1 day early for face-to-face consultations and pre-operative medical assessments.
  • Surgery day: Procedures are typically outpatient under local anesthesia at clinics like Yanhee Hospital.
  • Stitch removal: Surgeons usually schedule suture removal for day 7 or 8 post-operation.
  • Travel clearance: Plan to fly home on day 9 or 10 to avoid complications.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai clinics like ID Clinic frequently serve high patient volumes, with some surgeons performing over 20,000 procedures. This high demand means stitch removal appointments fill up fast; always confirm your follow-up date before booking your return flight home.

Patient Consensus: Most patients recommend staying at least 10 days total to manage bruising comfortably. Wearing loose sunglasses helps hide swelling while you enjoy light sightseeing in Bangkok before your departure.

What is 'Asian Blepharoplasty' and why is it popular in Thailand?

Asian Blepharoplasty, or double eyelid surgery, creates a natural upper eyelid crease where one is absent or undefined. This procedure remains popular in Thailand due to specialized surgical expertise, lower costs starting from $900, and high-volume clinics that maintain JCI-accredited safety standards.

  • Procedure methods: Surgeons use incisional or non-incisional suture techniques based on permanent crease goals.
  • Surgical expertise: Thai doctors often hold dual certifications from international boards and Korean aesthetic societies.
  • Recovery timeline: Initial swelling typically reduces within 5-7 days with 10–14 days total downtime.
  • Cost savings: Patients save approximately 78% compared to US average prices of $5,500.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many look to South Korea for eyelid surgery, Thailand’s top facilities like Yanhee International Hospital serve over 450,000 patients annually. Our data shows Thai surgeons often favor a more customizable, less aggressive aesthetic than the standardized Korean style. This allows for subtler results that respect unique ethnic anatomy at a more competitive price point.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find the recovery faster than expected and appreciate that most Thai surgeons speak excellent English. They suggest budgeting $2,000–$4,000 to cover both the procedure and a comfortable 10-day recovery stay in Bangkok.
