How Much Does DIEP Flap Reconstruction (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator Flap Surgery) Cost in Turkey?

DIEP flap breast reconstruction in Turkey typically costs from $9,500 to $15,000. Prices depend on surgical complexity, hospital tier, and whether the procedure is unilateral or bilateral. Patients save approximately 73% compared to the US, where average costs reach $45,000. Packages usually include microsurgical fees, hospital stays in JCI-accredited facilities, anesthesia, and postoperative care with specialized garments.

  • Surgical complexity: Bilateral reconstruction for both breasts typically costs 50-70% more than a single-sided procedure.
  • Hospital facilities: Premium multidisciplinary centers in Istanbul often charge 15-20% more than specialized aesthetic clinics.
  • Surgeon expertise: Fees increase for professors or surgeons with international microsurgery fellowships and board certifications.
  • Medical hubs: Most advanced microsurgical centers are located in Istanbul, Ankara, and Antalya.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a multidisciplinary hospital like Memorial Sisli or Memorial Bahcelievler ensures high-level safety. These facilities offer advanced microsurgical techniques, such as the 2015 HUV perforator artery-based flap. Packages at these top-tier hospitals typically run about $25,300 for comprehensive surgical care. This investment is wise as these centers feature intensive care units and 24/7 specialist support. Doctors like Professor Cemal Firat in Antalya bring specialized expertise in microvascular tissue transfers. For the best value, look for surgeons with Turkish Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Association (TPRAASA) membership.

My surgeon was great; he was honest about what results were realistic for my body and clearly explained all the risks, which gave me confidence
If you're thinking about this, my main piece of advice is to be mentally ready for the procedure, as it can be overwhelming. I’m in early recovery from my breast reduction and lift, and I am feeling better than expected. My surgeon was great; he was honest about what results were realistic for my body and clearly explained all the risks, which gave me confidence. The clinic team was easy to reach and stayed in touch. Do be aware of some additional expenses – I had a prescription that cost extra at the pharmacy. A few practical tips: bring a spare compression garment, cotton t-shirts to wear underneath it, and your own snacks. Also, having my mum with me has been pivotal to my recovery, so I'd suggest bringing a companion if you can.
The co-ordinator at Bookimed, Winnington was brilliant. No matter how many questions I had he was able to answer them promptly and with one small hiccup from the hospital Winnington went out of his way to try and package a new procedure for me. My co-ordinator Eyyub at Optimed hospital was outstanding. The hospital was great, the staff on my floor were fantastic. We used goggle translate when the co-ordinator wasn’t with us if we came up against a language barrier but that was not very often. I was cared for before and after my surgery by the nursing staff who could not do enough for myself and my mum. I 10000000% recommend Bookimed & Optimed hospital
Post op instructions could be better. I have suggested to them to put together a general guide of what to do and not to do and for however long. What’s normal and if something doesn’t feel right who to contact etc. I think this will greatly help international patients and help the hospital co-ordinators from being hounded with a load of questions from several patients all at once. Peace of mind for the patient and a little more support for the co-ordinator. The food is catered for Turkish patients and can be hard for international patients to eat. Again, I have suggested to them to try having a small box of fibrous cereal available at breakfast time and instead of a full meal at lunch time something simple like sandwiches or rolls/bagels/baked goods. Dinner was usually ok and we were able to eat most of that but our daytime diet is a little less than they were providing and there was a lot of food waste which they could minimise & use the money elsewhere if there was a cater to international patients diets.

The single positive aspect of this entire process was the staff. They were wonderful. Unfortunately, my experience with the surgeon and the clinic itself was profoundly disappointing, and I'm very concerned with how my otoplasty recovery is going so far. The gap between the supportive staff and the actual medical treatment I received is hard to understand. The facility did not meet my expectations for a medical setting in any capacity. Based on this, I would absolutely not recommend this clinic to anyone considering a similar procedure.
Do not go with bookimed.com. I didn’t liked from the moment when I arrived to airport anyone wasn’t there to pick me up, you know when you arrive any place you have no internet and you can’t make any phone calls or text so night mares already start.

I felt in such safe hands throughout and would recommend my surgeon Dr Yunus Emre Seker and his team to anyone
I loved the coordinator / interpreter. Totally made me feel at ease and comfortable in what I would only describe as an anxious situation especially with the language barrier and the unknown of where you are going. The surgeon himself was wonderful and even had a coffee with me before hand which made me feel completely at ease. I felt in such safe hands throughout and would recommend my surgeon Dr Yunus Emre Seker and his team to anyone. Thank-you so much :)

The surgeon and the clinic itself were excellent
The possibility of breathing issues was my primary concern going into this. And honestly, that has been the biggest challenge in recovery so far, with one nostril constantly feeling stuffed. My surgeon performed a closed rhinoplasty. Everything is still very swollen along the bridge, but I can already see that my nose tip appears more refined, which is a great sign. The surgeon and the clinic itself were excellent. The general staff were great, though post-op instructions could have been a bit more explicit. I'm satisfied with the medical care I received so far
Dr. Erol is an amazing doctor, his work was amazing he truly listened to my request and expectations and he was really patient and reassuring. The medical assistance team as well, they really took good care of me, they were present when i needed them.
post-op instructions could’ve been explained better

The lift in my jowls is already a dramatic improvement
My biggest worry was how the final result would look, and whether it would be worth the recovery. Even though I’m still quite puffy around my jawline, the lift in my jowls is already a dramatic improvement. That part is a huge relief. The staff and clinic environment were excellent from start to finish. Turning my head feels slightly tight but okay. The surgeon did good work, though I rated them a 4/5 as I felt some communication could have been a bit more compassionate after surgery. The most challenging part has absolutely been sleeping elevated. That's no fun. I would still recommend this clinic.
The Bookined coordinator and the Quartz Clinic staff were fantastic: supportive, helpful, compassionate. All updates were communicated to me promptly. The hotel booked for me is really excellent, with smooth transfers and kind drivers. Spot on!
I didn't give the doctor 5 stars because she made me cry the day after surgery. She could adopt a different approach towards me after surgery, with more understanding and compassion, especially since I was there on my own and at the end of the day, she's received all the information required, it doesn't matter from whom. The stress has a significant impact on me. Aside from that, she was great.

The moment I saw the result, even with the initial swelling, I could tell the shape was exactly what I wanted
The moment I saw the result, even with the initial swelling, I could tell the shape was exactly what I wanted. It’s a great feeling. My goal was a more defined tip, and that's precisely what the surgeon delivered using an open approach. The whole process was smooth, and the staff were genuinely caring. The most difficult part of recovery so far is just having to sleep upright, which is temporary. A huge bonus is that I am breathing perfectly through my nose already. I am so grateful for the surgeon's skill and the clear communication from the team.

the care provided by the surgeon and all the staff was impeccable
If you’re thinking about arm liposuction, I’d advise you to prepare for the recovery. My surgeon used the VASER ultrasound technique and, although it’s still early days, my compression sleeves are already too loose. My mobility is limited; my biggest difficulty right now is reaching for things above my head. It’s also important to be patient with the results, because when I look in the mirror today, I can see that one arm looks different from the other, and I’m confident that will even out over time. Despite these minor aspects of the process, the care provided by the surgeon and all the staff was impeccable. I would recommend the clinic.

The surgeon and staff were brilliant and supportive throughout
My biggest worry was ending up with an unnatural shape, but the surgeon’s approach and clear communication completely put me at ease. Right now, things still look a little patchy as about half the transplanted hairs have fallen out, which I was told to expect during this early stage of healing. It’s a process. The biggest challenge has honestly been a personal one: just remembering to avoid touching them! The surgeon and staff were brilliant and supportive throughout. While the clinic facilities were fine, the personal care from the team made all the difference. I'm very satisfied with my choice.

The surgeon did an excellent job – the incisions were made using the traditional method and are now hidden in the natural folds of the skin
I was worried that the scars from the upper and lower eyelid surgery would be noticeable. Fortunately, the surgeon did an excellent job – the incisions were made using the traditional method and are now hidden in the natural folds of the skin. I have no complaints about him whatsoever. However, the overall impression was greatly marred by the clinic itself, where the conditions were unsatisfactory. Recovery is still ongoing. My eyes are still swollen, and I’ve noticed that when I smile, one side looks slightly different. I hope this will pass. The main advice I would give to anyone considering this procedure is to prepare thoroughly for the period before and after the operation.

I now feel better than I expected
What I remember most about the whole process was the doctor’s approach. Before the operation, he personally marked the incision lines on my upper eyelids and honestly explained what I could realistically expect from the result. The procedure was carried out under general anaesthetic, and I now feel better than I expected. It was a great help that the doctor personally checked on me after the operation, and the clinic provided clear aftercare instructions. There were no additional costs. The only advice I would give to future patients is to make sure you confirm the exact date and time of the operation in advance.

We will be going back for other treatment and truly can’t recommend them enough
Sitting in the clinic in Antalya, the surgeon explained how the laser-assisted technique for my upper eyelids would function during the procedure. The whole service was smooth and we had a fantastic time throughout our stay. The aftercare was good. I was thrilled with how my eyes looked at 12 days, although at day 15 my biggest challenge is that they are still puffy. My eyes look natural and smooth when I smile. It is a process. We will be going back for other treatment and truly can’t recommend them enough. If you are considering eyelid surgery, ensure you have a few weeks to let the initial swelling settle.

I breath perfectly now after surgery and my nose is a lot straighter
I felt very secure and taken care of through the entire experience. All of my inquiries were answered very promptly by both the bookiemed coordinator, the assistant, and my doctor (Dr. C Altindąg), is very experienced and talked me through what to expect and analyzed my nose very thoroughly. I breath perfectly now after surgery and my nose is a lot straighter (I had a severe deviated septum and other complications from a past surgery that he identified and corrected including a mirgrated graft and a droopy tip). I'm still quite swollen but look forward to seeing final results in a few months.

But the calmness and poise of the doctor and his team completely dispelled my doubts
I liked everything overall. Initially, I was very afraid, starting with the flight to another country, the transfer to the hotel and the operation itself. But the calmness and poise of the doctor and his team completely dispelled my doubts. 5 hours after the operation I returned to the hotel. Which is also very good because the hospital ward is the worst for me. Exactly after a week I took off the splint, my nose was still swollen. The nose is proportional to my face. When the swelling goes down it will be smaller

My surgeon was excellent
My biggest concern before the trip was unexpected additional costs, and unfortunately that concern proved to be justified. My additional costs for two lymphatic drainage sessions, an anti-thrombosis injection for the return flight and meals at the hotel amounted to €450. My advice to future patients is therefore: you should definitely clarify any additional costs that may arise. Apart from that, my surgeon was excellent. He marked the areas very carefully before the operation, which put me at ease. Over 4 litres of fat were removed during the Vaser liposuction, and my recovery has so far gone as expected. The clinic provided me with good support afterwards, was always available and gave me clear aftercare guidelines. If your language skills are not sufficient, you should definitely ask for an interpreter.
So, in the end, the whole package was just right. The coordinator was always on hand for me, organised everything she could and also cleared up any uncertainties. She was absolutely brilliant. The doctor was very friendly, but always rather curt. Because of the language barrier, it wasn’t that easy to sort out many things straight away. That usually only happened afterwards in the coordinator’s WhatsApp group. The transfer and the hotel we’d chosen were also great, and above all, everyone was friendly. The clinic was OK. The rooms didn’t feel as sterile as they do in Germany, but the medical care was very good. Even with the language barrier, the nursing staff always made an effort to chat with you. It was a good thing I had Google Translate.
I was promised a detailed preliminary consultation, but this did not take place. An interpreter on site would have been very helpful. I would recommend a longer stay of at least 10 days. My journey home was anything but pleasant. The wound drains were removed on the day of departure, even though there was still too much wound fluid being produced. On arriving in Germany, I went straight to A&E to rule out any more serious complications.

What gave me the most confidence was my surgeon sitting down with me to draw the incision lines right before the procedure
What gave me the most confidence was my surgeon sitting down with me to draw the incision lines right before the procedure. She was very honest about what results would be realistic for my age and even checked on me personally after I woke up from the general anesthesia. The procedure covered my full face and neck, and while it's still too early to tell what the final outcome will be, the support has been good. The staff are always easy to reach. I also appreciated that there were no additional expenses. My main advice would be to arrive a day before your operation for the consultation with your doctor, and make sure to tell them what you eat.
Everything went excellently with the coordinator. The staff were helpful and knowledgeable. Dr Paysal, who was my surgeon, was kind and knowledgeable.
The staff's English could have been better. The food served was the same for lunch and dinner for two days — chicken and rice. I told them I was vegetarian, but was still served chicken and rice for lunch and dinner.

FAQ about DIEP Flap Reconstruction (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator Flap Surgery) in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Can DIEP flap reconstruction be done at the same time as a mastectomy?

DIEP flap breast reconstruction is commonly performed during the same surgery as a mastectomy, known as immediate reconstruction. This dual procedure preserves natural skin and nipple sensation while eliminating the need for a second major operation, though it requires specialized microsurgical teams and 8 to 12 hours.

  • Surgical duration: Combined procedures typically last 8 to 12 hours requiring expert microsurgeons.
  • Cosmetic benefit: Immediate timing allows for skin-sparing techniques resulting in less visible scarring.
  • Psychological impact: Patients avoid a flat phase by waking up with a reconstructed breast.
  • Recovery period: Plan for a 4 to 6 week total hospital and home recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While immediate reconstruction is preferred, the 8-plus hour surgery duration makes surgeon experience critical. At clinics like Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital, specialists like Tonguc Isken utilize advanced imaging like Tomosynthesis Mammography. Look for surgeons who perform over 50 flaps annually to ensure success rates remain above 98%.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find the immediate abdominal harvest results in a beneficial tummy-tuck effect. While initial pain is significant, waking up with a breast shape greatly reduces post-operative emotional distress.

What are the health risks associated with DIEP flap reconstruction in Turkey?

DIEP flap reconstruction in Turkey is a major microsurgical procedure. It carries global risks like flap necrosis, fat necrosis, and abdominal wall weakness. Experienced Turkish microsurgeons like Professor Cemal Firat use perforator artery techniques. These methods maintain blood flow and protect the reconstructed breast tissue.

  • Flap necrosis: Blood supply issues can cause tissue death, requiring more surgery.
  • Fat necrosis: Poor blood flow to abdominal fat creates firm, lumpy scar tissue.
  • Abdominal weakness: Some patients experience hernia or muscle weakness at the donor site.
  • Blood clots: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) risk is roughly 1% for major surgeries.
  • Wound healing: Minor openings or infections may occur, typically managed with standard antibiotics.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish hospitals like Memorial Göztepe use 512-slice CT scans and digital PET/CT. These scans map perforator vessels before surgery. This mapping helps surgeons like Dr Emrah Koksal select the healthiest blood vessels. This detailed approach reduces the risk of flap failure during complex microsurgery.

Am I a suitable candidate for DIEP flap breast reconstruction?

Suitability for DIEP flap breast reconstruction in Turkey requires enough lower abdominal tissue and healthy vascular anatomy. Ideal candidates prefer using their own skin and fat rather than implants. Specialists like Professor Cemal Firat at Medical Park Antalya Hospital Complex evaluate donor tissue and vessel quality for successful microsurgical transfer.

  • Tissue volume: Lower abdominal fat and skin must suffice for the desired breast size.
  • Vascular health: Abdominal perforator vessels must be suitable for complex microvascular anastomosis.
  • Surgical history: Some previous abdominal scars are acceptable, but prior tummy tucks generally disqualify candidates.
  • Health status: Patients must be healthy enough for an intensive 6–10 hour microsurgical procedure.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many Australian patients worry about prior C-sections. However, Turkish specialists often use these existing scars as the entry point for tissue harvest. Surgeons like Dr. Emrah Koksal at Medical Park Göztepe Hospital Complex use microsurgical techniques to work around scar tissue. This is possible provided the underlying blood vessels remain intact.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasise that having enough belly tissue is the main factor for success in Turkey. They suggest confirmed imaging like a CTA scan is vital before flying. This ensures the blood vessels are suitable.

What is the typical recovery timeline for DIEP flap surgery in Turkey?

Typical recovery for DIEP flap surgery in Turkey takes 6 to 8 weeks. Full results are visible after 12 weeks. Patients stay in Turkish hospitals for 3 to 5 days. Success relies on microsurgical techniques to reconnect abdominal blood vessels to the chest.

  • Hospitalisation: Patients stay 3–5 days for flap monitoring and pain management.
  • Initial mobility: Walking with nursing staff usually begins within 24–48 hours.
  • Drain management: Surgical drains usually stay for 10–14 days to prevent fluid build-up.
  • Activity levels: Light duties resume at 4–6 weeks. Avoid lifting for 8–12 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish microsurgeons often specialise in perforator artery-based free flaps. These preserve abdominal muscle. Dr Cemal Firat at Medical Park Antalya performs these complex microsurgical transfers. This focus helps patients regain core strength faster than traditional methods.

Patient Consensus: Recovery in Turkey involves abdominal tightness and high dependence on help early on. Patients recommend planning extra recovery days before flying to Australia to manage fatigue.

How long should I plan to stay in Turkey for DIEP flap reconstruction?

Plan for a 3 to 4 week stay in Turkey for DIEP flap reconstruction. This ensures the microsurgical flap remains stable and drains are removed. This timeframe includes 5 to 10 days in hospital. It also allows 2 weeks of local recovery before flying back to Australia.

  • Hospital stay: Patients spend 5–10 days in hospital for close flap and wound monitoring.
  • Initial recovery: The following 14–21 days are spent in local accommodation near the hospital.
  • Drain management: Surgeons usually wait 10–14 days before removing surgical drains to prevent fluid build-up.
  • Travel readiness: Total stay allows the flap to settle and minimises travel risks like swelling.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Microsurgery specialists like Professor Cemal Firat emphasise that drain output determines your departure date. Packages at Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital cover the surgery, but allow for 14 extra hotel nights. Long-haul flights to Australia are only safe once drains are out and the flap is vascularised.

Patient Consensus: Turkish clinics often suggest a minimum timeframe. Patients recommend adding extra buffer days for recovery. Building in time for final surgeon reviews makes the long flight home more comfortable.

What does the DIEP flap procedure involve and where will the incisions be placed?

DIEP flap surgery uses abdominal skin and fat to reconstruct the breast while sparing the muscle. In Turkey, specialists like Professor Cemal Firat at Medical Park Antalya use microsurgery to connect delicate blood vessels. This results in a more natural breast feel and faster physical recovery.

  • Abdominal incision: A curved incision runs from hip to hip across the lower stomach.
  • Belly button: A circular incision allows surgeons to reposition it after tightening the skin.
  • Breast site: Surgeons place incisions along existing mastectomy scars or within a new envelope.
  • Muscle preservation: Abdominal muscles remain intact to maintain core strength and reduce pain.

Bookimed Expert Insight: DIEP flap surgery is complex. Turkish centres like Memorial Şişli Hospital offer all-inclusive microsurgical packages for A$34,900. These packages often cover perforator artery-based techniques. These use high-magnification microsurgery so that tissue survives without taking muscle.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey find the lower abdominal scar easy to hide under swimwear. It often feels similar to a tummy tuck. Many suggest confirming drain removal times and asking where the belly button will sit.

Will I have sensation in my breast following DIEP flap reconstruction?

Most patients regain partial sensation within 6 to 18 months as nerves naturally regenerate. Sensation starts at the breast base and moves towards the centre. While results vary, nerve reconstruction during the DIEP flap procedure in Turkey improves the chances of restoring feeling.

  • Regeneration timeline: Sensation returns slowly as nerves regrow from the breast edges.
  • Nerve coaptation: Specialists like Dr Cemal Firat perform nerve repair to improve sensory recovery.
  • Sensory quality: Recipient sites often feel pressure and warmth before light touch returns.
  • Initial numbness: Complete numbness is standard immediately following mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Research from specialists like Prof Cemal Firat at Medical Park Antalya focuses on peripheral nerve regeneration. Choosing a surgeon who specialises in nerve healing increases the likelihood of restoring functional sensation to the new breast tissue.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey describe feeling tingling or pins-and-needles as a sign that light touch is slowly returning. Most notice pressure or the warmth of clothing well before fine touch or nipple sensation recovers.
