How Much Does Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) Cost in Turkey?

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) in Turkey typically costs from $2,800 to $7,100. Prices depend on clinic accreditation, surgeon experience, and the specific suturing technology used. In the US, similar procedures cost around $11,000 on average. Turkey offers savings of around 55%. Most packages include pre-operative tests, anesthesia, hospital stays, and post-operative dietitian support.

  • City variations: Istanbul and Ankara serve as primary medical hubs for advanced endoscopic weight loss procedures.
  • Technology premium: Using specialized FDA-approved suturing systems like Apollo OverStitch often increases the base cost.
  • Hospital accreditation: JCI-accredited facilities like Memorial Şişli Hospital generally charge more than non-accredited private clinics.
  • Specialist fees: Surgeons with international fellowships or over 15 years of experience typically command higher fees.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing JCI-accredited hospitals provides high-tier safety at competitive rates. Memorial Şişli Hospital was the first in Turkey to earn JCI accreditation, ensuring international standards. Patients often find better value in Istanbul clinics that bundle one year of dietitian consulting. These services are vital for maintaining long-term weight loss. Top surgeons like Dr. Abdukadir Bedirli offer extensive experience with over 1,500 successful procedures.

One of my biggest worries was whether ESG was truly the right choice for me. My surgeon immediately addressed this by being very honest about who is not a suitable candidate, which built a lot of trust. He showed me the endoscopy images and clearly discussed the plan and all the diet stages before the procedure. I'm in my early recovery, but I am feeling better than expected. The post-op support has been solid; the clinic stays in touch, is easy to reach, and provided a clear aftercare guide. The only additional cost was for medicine, as the protein drinks and vitamins at the clinic were far too expensive. My main piece of advice would be to ask them beforehand what specific protein to buy, because it’s hard to figure it out with the different writing on the labels.
Everything. dr was amazing. All his assistants, diaticians and staff organising my trip all we’re fantastic

FAQ about Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Who is an ideal candidate for endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG)?

The ideal candidate for endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is an adult with a Body Mass Index between 30 and 40 who has not achieved sustainable weight loss through traditional dieting. This non-surgical procedure suits individuals seeking to avoid invasive bariatric surgery while addressing weight-related conditions like hypertension.

  • Weight history: Candidates must provide documentation of previously failed lifestyle modifications or medical weight-loss attempts.
  • Medical profile: Suitable for those with obesity-linked issues including sleep apnea or type 2 diabetes.
  • Surgical history: Optimal results occur in patients without prior major abdominal or stomach surgeries.
  • Lifestyle commitment: Success requires active participation in long-term nutritional counseling and behavioral therapy programs.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While a Body Mass Index up to 40 is standard, Turkish specialists like Dr. Halil Alis at Memorial Sisli Hospital are increasingly performing endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty for patients with a Body Mass Index near 50 as a bridge to other treatments. Data shows that high-volume centers in Istanbul serving thousands of international patients maintain higher success rates by requiring a 3-month pre-procedure smoking cessation period.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that being mentally ready is just as important as physical eligibility. Many report that while men often see faster initial results, everyone faces a high risk of weight regain without strict long-term coaching.

Is the procedure reversible?

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is technically reversible because it involves suturing rather than removing stomach tissue. However, reversal is medically complex and uncommon. Efficiency for returning the stomach to its original volume decreases after 12 to 24 months due to natural tissue scarring and internal fibrosis.

  • Reversal method: Surgeons use endoscopic tools to release sutures and reopen the stomach fold.
  • Success window: Reversal is significantly more effective when performed within months of the procedure.
  • Tissue changes: Long-term scarring means the stomach may never regain its exact original shape.
  • Clinical rarity: Most patients maintain sutures for life as reversal carries additional surgical risks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While technically possible, our data shows that specialized centers like Anadolu Medical Center or Memorial Şişli emphasize ESG as a permanent lifestyle commitment. If you are uncertain about the permanence, consider that reversal often costs significantly more than the initial $2,840 to $7,080 investment. Focus on clinics with International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity accreditation to ensure your sutures are placed with long-term stability in mind.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that even if reversed, food tolerance often changes permanently. Most consider it a one-way street because of the high costs and physical reality of tissue healing.

What is the expected recovery time after ESG?

Most patients return to routine daily activities and work within 1 to 3 days after endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) in Turkey. While immediate symptoms usually resolve within a week, complete physical recovery typically takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on your lifestyle and activity levels.

  • Hospital stay: Expect same-day discharge after 1 to 3 hours of postoperative observation.
  • Initial recovery: Return to light activities and work within 3 to 7 days.
  • Physical activity: Resume light exercise in 48 hours; wait 4 weeks for heavy lifting.
  • Dietary progression: Transition from liquids to solids over a structured 4 to 8 week period.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from top-tier Istanbul hospitals like Memorial Sisli show that ESG is often paired with immediate mobilization protocols. Unlike traditional surgery, surgeons here encourage walking within hours of the procedure to clear gas and prevent clots. This aggressive early movement is why 10,000+ annual patients at centers like Lokman Hekim often fly home comfortably just 3 days post-op.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that nausea and abdominal cramping peak within the first 48 hours but fade quickly by day 3. Many emphasize that walking daily and using gas-relief aids are essential for managing early bloating and shoulder pain.

Which Turkish facilities are most reputable for ESG?

Reputable Turkish facilities for endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) include JCI-accredited institutions like Memorial Şişli Hospital and Anadolu Medical Center, which is affiliated with Johns Hopkins. These centers offer specialized weight loss units led by surgeons from the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO).

  • Surgeon credentials: Look for IFSO members like Prof. Halil Alis at Valued Med Hub Hospitals.
  • Safety certifications: Top facilities maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) and ISO 9001 quality standards.
  • Clinical volume: Anadolu Medical Center serves 65,000 international patients annually with high-density bariatric expertise.
  • Holistic support: Memorial Bahçelievler integrates eco-friendly design and recovery spaces for long-term weight management.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics market all-inclusive packages, the real differentiator is the hospital's longevity and academic ties. Centers like Memorial Şişli, established in 2000, pioneered bariatric standards in Turkey. Choosing a facility with over 20 years of experience often ensures more robust complication management protocols compared to newer, smaller boutique clinics.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize prioritizing surgeons who have performed over 200 procedures and recommend planning a 7–10 day stay for post-operative checks. Many report that choosing JCI-accredited spots significantly reduces anxiety regarding safety and medical records compatibility.

Is Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) in Turkey considered a safe procedure?

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) in Turkey is a safe, non-surgical weight loss option. Global complication rates are often under 2%. Safety depends on selecting JCI-accredited hospitals and surgeons with specific endoscopic experience. Leading Istanbul clinics hold international certifications. These clinics offer 24/7 post-operative monitoring for international patients.

  • Clinical standards: Major hospitals like Memorial Şişli hold JCI and ISO certifications for safety.
  • Modern technology: Specialists use the da Vinci robotic system for complex bariatric procedures.
  • Specialised training: Surgeons like Dr. Abdukadir Bedirli have performed 1,500+ successful robotic-assisted surgeries.
  • Regulatory oversight: Qualified clinics must hold a government-issued Health Tourism Authorisation Certificate.
  • International experience: VM Medical Park Florya is a designated Centre of Excellence for bariatric surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows elite Turkish clinics are increasingly affiliated with prestigious US institutions. For example, Anadolu Medical Center has a partnership with Johns Hopkins Hospital. This brings safety protocols in line with Australian and American standards. Procedure costs stay between $2,800 and $7,100.

Patient Consensus: Patients find Turkey reliable when choosing providers that supply English discharge summaries. They also value telehealth follow-up. Success requires a plan for returning to Australia and strict adherence to nutritional support.

What happens during an Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) procedure in Turkey?

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) in Turkey is a non-surgical weight loss procedure. It is performed under general anaesthesia. Specialists use a flexible endoscope and suturing device via the mouth. This reduces stomach volume by 70–80%. This incision-free method leaves no external scarring. Typical recovery takes only 2–3 days.

  • Endoscope insertion: Specialists guide a flexible camera through the mouth and oesophagus into the stomach.
  • Suturing process: A suturing system attaches to the camera to place 6–12 permanent stitches.
  • Sleeve creation: Tightening the stitches folds the stomach tissue accordion-style into a narrow tube.
  • Surgical time: The entire outpatient procedure typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes.
  • Hospital monitoring: Most centres provide a short observation period before discharge to a hotel.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many equate bariatrics with surgery. However, high-volume Turkish centres like VM Medical Park Florya are designated Centres of Excellence. They focus specifically on robotic and endoscopic obesity treatments. This specialisation is key. Successful ESG relies on the surgeon’s endoscopic suturing precision rather than traditional cutting.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report the first 72 hours involve managed nausea and bloating. After this, they report a quick return to light activities. They found written diet stages and 24/7 coordinator access essential for recovery once home.

What results can I expect regarding weight loss from an Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) in Turkey?

Patients undergoing endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty in Turkey generally lose 15% to 22% of their total body weight within 12 to 18 months. This procedure involves suturing the stomach internally to reduce its volume. It helps patients lose up to 50% of their excess weight.

  • Weight loss goal: Most patients lose approximately 10% of their body weight within three months.
  • Excess weight reduction: Clinical data shows patients can lose between 35% and 79% of excess weight.
  • Obesity-related benefits: Significant improvements are typically seen in type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
  • Long-term outlook: Results last when supported by dietary adherence and regular medical follow-up.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish bariatric centres serve over 130,000 patients annually. High-volume hospitals like Lokman Hekim Istanbul Hospital handle 10,000+ patients every year. This caseload allows surgeons to perfect suturing techniques. These techniques are the primary factor in lasting stomach reduction.

Patient Consensus: Success depends heavily on following the post-procedure dietary stages. Patients recommend checking if your Turkish clinic offers remote telehealth check-ins for recovery in Australia. Setting realistic expectations by comparing starting BMI with others helps track progress during the first year.

What is the expected recovery time following an Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) in Turkey?

Recovery time for an Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) in Turkey is fast. Most patients return to normal daily activities within 1 to 3 days. This incisionless procedure allows for immediate walking. Complete internal healing of the stomach typically takes about 4 weeks.

  • Hospital discharge: Patients usually leave the clinic 1 to 3 hours after the procedure.
  • Initial window: Mild discomfort or nausea typically resolve within 1 week.
  • Work resumption: Most patients return to sedentary jobs within 3 to 7 days.
  • Physical activity: Light exercise is safe after 48 hours. Avoid heavy lifting for 4 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Physical recovery is rapid, but the flight home can be challenging. Managing gas pain and hydration is easier if you stay in Turkey for 4 to 5 days. Clinicians like Dr Necdet Derici or Prof Abdukadir Bedirli recommend this buffer. It ensures you tolerate the liquid diet before flying.

Patient Consensus: The first 3 days involve some cramping and fatigue. However, appetite control stabilises quickly. Packing electrolytes is essential. Many find gastric tightness eases significantly by the second week.

What is the required duration of stay in Turkey for Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) patients?

Most patients spend 4 to 5 days in Turkey for endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty. This timeframe covers consultations, the 60–90 minute procedure, and monitoring. While many are discharged the same day, others stay 1 night in hospital for observation.

  • Clinical observation: Stays range from same-day discharge to 1 night in hospital.
  • Monitoring period: Doctors monitor pain, nausea, and hydration for 24–72 hours after ESG.
  • Return to activity: Patients typically resume light activities 2 to 3 days after treatment.
  • Flight clearance: Specialists usually clear patients for international travel within 4 to 5 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: The procedure is non-surgical. Even so, JCI-accredited centres like Memorial Sisli Hospital often include 24/7 post-treatment monitoring. Short stays are common. However, allowing 72 hours post-procedure accounts for potential nausea or dehydration before flying home.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey find that clinics determine stay length based on individual recovery. Success relies on staying long enough for initial follow-ups. Patients should also confirm hydration levels before departure.

Is follow-up care available for international patients after an Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) in Turkey?

Follow-up care is standard for international patients after endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) in Turkey. Most Turkish clinics provide 24/7 remote monitoring and guidance through digital platforms. Patients typically receive ongoing support from bariatric teams for diet planning and weight-loss progress.

  • Remote monitoring: Specialists provide continuous guidance and video consultations via WhatsApp or Zoom.
  • Dietary support: Experts like Dr Umut Riza Gunduz offer specific plans for liquid and soft diets.
  • 24/7 availability: Clinics such as Soraca Med offer round-the-clock coordinator access for medical questions.
  • JCI standards: Accredited centres like VM Medical Park Florya maintain rigorous international safety protocols.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While clinics often promise long-term support, care quality depends on specific bariatric designations. Centres like VM Medical Park Florya are designated Centres of Excellence for bariatric surgery. Choosing these high-volume hubs means support staff have managed thousands of international recoveries.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey find remote follow-ups via WhatsApp convenient and helpful for progress. Most advise securing a local doctor in Australia for routine blood tests and physical check-ups.
