How Much Does Heart transplant Cost in Turkey?

Heart transplant costs in Turkey typically range from $175,000 to $250,000. The final price depends on hospital accreditation, the surgical team's experience, and the need for assist devices like an LVAD. In the US, similar procedures cost around $1,250,000 on average. Patients save around 83% compared to the US. Inclusions usually cover pre-transplant evaluations, surgery, ICU stay, and initial immunosuppressive medications.

  • Hospital reputation: JCI-accredited facilities in Istanbul often command higher rates due to advanced medical infrastructure.
  • Mechanical support: Adding a Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) can increase the total cost significantly.
  • Medical hubs: Most transplant procedures are performed in major cities like Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir.
  • Stay duration: Extended post-operative care or specialized rehabilitation needs will impact the final hospital invoice.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a pioneer like Memorial Şişli Hospital offers significant value. It was the first in Turkey to earn JCI accreditation. The facility maintains a 90% organ transplant success rate. This level of expertise is comparable to top-tier Western centers but at a lower price point. For pediatric cases, specialists like Dr. Nurettin Unal in Izmir provide highly specialized congenital heart care.

I can't recommend Aliser and the level of support we received enough - especially in such difficult circumstances
I highly recommend Florence Nightingale Hospital to anyone that is about to undergo a medical journey. For us, everything happened so suddenly. From the moment we uploaded files and made our request on Bookimed, Aliser as the International Coordinator was immediately on hand to support us - incredibly attentively and with compassion. He was supportive to our needs, and at a moment’s notice jumped onto WhatsApp calls to answer any questions and went above and beyond to give us the information we needed. We were navigating significant timezone issues (based in Hong Kong, whereas the patient, father-in-law, was in Albania) but we didn’t feel this burden. We had lots of specific needs that were met, including jumping onto a Video call with Professor Yildiray Yuzer, to answer questions directly. We weren’t the easiest of patients with lots of reassurance needed, but Aliser was helpful in being able to put himself in the position of the patient and being on our side to help us. We were incredibly satisfied by the level of support that we received - especially in comparison to other hospitals in Istanbul. I can’t recommend Aliser and the level of support we received enough - especially in such difficult circumstances. Once we arrived in Istanbul we appreciated being met with a transfer, and recommendations were made for accommodation to ensure that we were comfortable. Throughout our consultations, we most definitely felt that the Florence team was earnest - putting patient health first, above profit, which we appreciated. During the hospital stay itself, we were also blown away by the compassion of the nurses and support staff in our ward. Something that was so challenging, was punctuated throughout with so many moments of warmth and support. In addition, the facilities, hospital rooms, and cleanliness and hygiene at Florence were fantastic, we couldn’t have wished for a better stay. Most importantly, we were reassured by the experience and expertise of Professor Yuzer and his team. Any patient can trust that they are in expert hands. It’s also helpful to see that these skills are supported by a genuine empathy for the patient. Ultimately, the procedure was a success (we hope that positive health outcome continues!). It feels surreal having embarked on the journey, however, I’m incredibly satisfied with the service, support and expertise of the hospital. There’s nothing I can think of to improve!
About Bookimed service
The bookimed team, in addition to Florence, were incredibly supportive and compassionate particularly in the first weeks as we sought to navigate options and make decisions. The customer support team regularly checked in on our progress via whatsapp, and you could see that they had medical backgrounds and were incredibly competent. It felt fantastic to have their support - bookimed is an incredible platform.

FAQ about Heart transplant in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What does the recovery process look like after a heart transplant?

Recovery after a heart transplant involves a two to four week hospital stay followed by three months of intensive monitoring. Patients begin walking within two days to prevent clots, while the sternum requires eight weeks to heal. Lifelong immunosuppressant medication is mandatory to prevent organ rejection.

  • Clinical monitoring: Patients spend three to five days in the intensive care unit for stabilization.
  • Sternal healing: The breastbone takes eight weeks to knit; avoid lifting over 10 pounds.
  • Rejection checks: Weekly heart biopsies via neck catheter are standard during the first month.
  • Activity timeline: Most patients resume driving at six weeks and light work at three months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish facilities like Memorial Şişli Hospital report a 90% transplant success rate, often discharging stable patients in just 10 days. This faster transition to outpatient care is possible due to high-volume surgical expertise. However, patients must stay nearby for bi-weekly biopsies during the first 90 days.

Patient Consensus: Many survivors describe initial recovery feeling like a major physical impact. While daily meds cause tremors or weight gain, most regain an excellent quality of life within one year.

Is heart surgery in Turkey safe for international patients?

Heart surgery in Turkey is exceptionally safe for international patients due to a high density of Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited hospitals and expert surgeons. Facilities like Memorial Şişli Hospital maintaining a 90% organ transplant success rate and utilize advanced da Vinci robotic systems for minimally invasive procedures.

  • Hospital certification: Turkey holds one of the highest numbers of JCI-accredited facilities globally for safety.
  • Surgeon experience: Lead cardiac surgeons frequently perform over 4,000 procedures throughout their medical careers.
  • Success rates: Top-tier centers in Istanbul and Ankara report 95% to 98.5% success for bypass surgeries.
  • Clinical affiliations: Leading hospitals like Anadolu Medical Center maintain active affiliations with Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients often overlook that Turkish heart teams, such as those at Liv Hospital Vadistanbul, prioritize pediatric and adult cardiac care simultaneously. This dual specialization suggests a higher level of precision and smaller-scale technical expertise that benefits all complex heart patients. Choosing clinics with ISO 9001 certification alongside JCI ensures both clinical safety and administrative reliability for foreign travelers.

Patient Consensus: While patients praise the world-class expertise of surgeons trained abroad, they emphasize the necessity of arranging a local translator. Practical insights suggest planning for a 14-day stay to ensure stable recovery before flying home.

What are the survival rates for heart transplants in Turkey?

Heart transplant survival rates in Turkey align with international benchmarks, reaching 85% to 92% for the first year. Specialized JCI-accredited centers in Istanbul and Izmir maintain these high standards through advanced ventricular assist devices and modern immunosuppressive therapies for complex cardiac cases.

  • One-year survival: Leading institutions report success rates between 85% and 92% for adult patients.
  • Long-term outcomes: Five-year survival rates typically range from 70% to 75% at high-volume centers.
  • Clinical benchmarks: JCI-accredited facilities like Memorial Şişli Hospital report an overall 90% transplant success rate.
  • Pediatric success: Specialized pediatric cardiac programs show short-term success rates reaching up to 95%.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume centers in Turkey have performed over 1,200 transplants since 2002. Data shows that clinics like Memorial Şişli Hospital, which was the first in Turkey to earn JCI accreditation, often achieve better outcomes by using third-generation ventricular assist devices as a bridge to surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of verifying that a surgeon performs over 50 transplants annually. They frequently highlight that post-operative follow-up care during the first 3 months in Turkey is vital for long-term stability.

Who is eligible for a heart transplant in Turkey?

Eligibility for a heart transplant in Turkey requires a diagnosis of end-stage heart failure with a life expectancy under 12 months. Candidates must have exhausted all medical therapies for conditions like dilated cardiomyopathy or severe valvular disease while maintaining a BMI below 35 and functional vital organs.

  • Age limits: Most centers prioritize patients under 65, though stable candidates up to 75 are considered.
  • Organ health: Patients must have no irreversible failure of the lungs, liver, or kidneys (COPD/cirrhosis).
  • Cancer status: Candidates must be cancer-free for at least 5 years to ensure long-term survival.
  • Psychological stability: Success requires a clean toxicology screen and a committed local or family support system.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While public hospitals prioritize Turkish citizens, private JCI-accredited centers like Memorial Şişli Hospital report a 90% organ transplant success rate. These facilities often move faster for international patients who provide upfront financial coverage and pass rigorous compatibility screenings. This efficiency makes Turkey a primary destination for complex cardiac cases from over 167 countries.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that while medical criteria like blood type and BMI are strict, having a dedicated support person is the deciding factor. Many survivors noted that demonstrating a clear plan for post-operative rehabilitation was just as critical as their clinical heart function for final approval.

What is included in the transplant package?

Heart transplant packages in Turkey primarily cover the surgical procedure, donor organ procurement, and specialized intensive care. These comprehensive bundles include pre-operative screenings, surgeon fees, and initial hospitalization. Facilities like Memorial Şişli Hospital maintain high success rates while offering significant savings compared to US medical costs.

  • Medical services: Covers surgery, anesthesia, and essential diagnostic tests like echocardiograms and ECGs.
  • Hospital stay: Includes 2–4 weeks of inpatient recovery and initial monitorization in the ICU.
  • Donor procurement: Processes for finding and harvesting a compatible donor organ are typically included.
  • Logistic support: Many centers provide airport transfers and basic accommodation for one designated caregiver.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While base prices ranging from $175,000 to $250,000 seem all-inclusive, they rarely cover long-term immunosuppressant medications. Patients should budget separately for these essential anti-rejection drugs. Leading Istanbul clinics like Memorial Şişli justify their costs with a 90% success rate and JCI accreditation.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of getting itemized written quotes. They often recommend arranging telemedicine with home-country doctors early to manage follow-up imaging and medication sourcing after returning home.

How long is the waiting list for a heart transplant in Turkey?

Heart transplant waiting times in Turkey typically range from 6.5 months to 1 year depending on medical urgency. While the national list includes approximately 1,500 patients, those in critical condition often receive priority. Specialized centers like Memorial Şişli Hospital maintain high success rates for complex organ transplantations.

  • Medical urgency: Emergency cases often wait 6.5 to 7 months for a compatible donor.
  • Biological matching: Wait times depend on blood type, body size, and specific antibody levels.
  • Donor availability: Turkey performed approximately 46 heart transplants in 2025 despite high demand.
  • Alternative options: Artificial heart surgery (LVAD) can often be scheduled within a few days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While public lists are long, private centers like Memorial Şişli Hospital report a 90% success rate for transplants. International patients often find faster matching in private systems where logistics are streamlined. Some patients even secure a transplant within 45 days if their condition is downgraded to high-priority status.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that the Turkish system favors medical urgency over a strict numerical queue. This approach allows some critical cases to bypass the standard 6-to-18-month wait seen in other countries.
