How Much Does Surgery for syringomyelia Cost in Turkey?

Surgery for syringomyelia in Turkey typically costs from $10,000 to $20,300. The final price depends on the underlying cause, such as Chiari malformation or tumors, and the surgical technique used. In the US, similar procedures cost around $100,000 on average. Turkey offers savings of around 85%. Most packages in Turkey include airport transfers, translation, and several nights of hospitalization.

  • Surgical technique: Advanced microsurgical excision for tumors typically adds a 30-50% premium over standard decompression.
  • Medical hub: Main specialty centers are located in Istanbul, which serves as the primary destination.
  • Clinic tier: Premium facilities with international affiliations often price their packages 15-20% higher than mid-tier hospitals.
  • Inclusions: Standard costs usually cover pre-operative exams, ICU care if required, and inpatient stays.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing JCI-accredited centers like Anadolu Medical Center or Istanbul Florence Nightingale Hospital offers high-value care. These facilities are affiliated with institutions like Johns Hopkins Hospital and use low-radiation EOS technology. Patients can access professors with over 30 years of experience for approximately $13,800 to $17,800. This is an excellent middle ground compared to premium microsurgery packages that reach $23,000.

We felt fully confident knowing we were in the hands of one of the best in his field
World-Class Neurosurgical Care and Compassion We are profoundly grateful for the exceptional care provided by Professor Ilhan Elmaci. His expertise, professionalism, and compassionate approach were evident from our very first meeting. Professor Elmaci performed the surgery to remove a medulloblastoma with extraordinary precision and care, and we felt fully confident knowing we were in the hands of one of the best in his field. Beyond his remarkable surgical skill, Professor Elmaci took the time to explain each step of the process with clarity and patience. He was always available to answer questions and offer reassurance, treating both the patient and our family with deep empathy and respect. A heartfelt thank you to Coordinator Alisher, who supported us at every step. He was always responsive, attentive, and truly dedicated to the patient’s well-being. From organizing the transfer and handling all special requirements to keeping the family updated and arranging medical needs, he made a difficult time much more manageable. The hospital staff was professional, kind, and caring throughout. We deeply appreciate the high level of expertise and personal attention that made all the difference in this journey.

Based on my journey so far, I would absolutely point a friend in this clinic's direction
If you're considering a discectomy/lumbar fusion and wondering where to go, I can speak to my experience here. The entire team deserves a 5/5 rating. Truly. From the surgeon's clear communication to the attentive staff, I felt I was in good hands throughout the entire process. The clinic environment itself was also comfortable and well-run. I’m still in the early phase of recovery, but the confidence I have in the care I received makes a huge difference. Based on my journey so far, I would absolutely point a friend in this clinic's direction. It was the right choice for me.

They brought our boy back to life
From the bottom of our hearts we would like to express our gratitude to our doctor Ilhan Elmachi and his whole team. We are from Uzbekistan and when we were diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation we realised that this is the most complicated pathology of brain neurosurgery. Our boy is only 17 years old and therefore it is understandable what grief fell on us. But thanks to the clinic manager Florence Alisher, we came across our respected doctor. The operation lasted 17 hours. Two days later our boy was already in the ward. 15 days later we were home. Our boy is healthy Ilhan Elmachi is a high professional. THANK YOU for the sensitive and caring attitude to us doctor and his team and nurses They brought our boy back to life. Such people are like stars in the desert gave us hope. All health and success in science. May Allah protect you.

We would strongly recommend this team to any foreigner visiting Turkey for treatment
I landed on Bookimed while searching for further treatment.. One Dr.Hilal got in touch with me and guided me through the different options available to us. We eventually settled on Florence nightingale hospital and immediately got in touch with Alişer, who walked with us through our preparation and arrival in Turkey as well as the hospital visits. He was kind enough to guide us on what was expected and was always available even at odd hours . The doctors at the Hosp led by Prof Elle and Prof Yusef, treated us with utmost professionalism. They calmly guided us through the process and made us understand what we are dealing with. They were not quick to rush into any interventions.. we felt very safe in their hands. A special thanks to Simaza our interpreter, you are a wonderful human being. Blessings lady. To The Professors, all medical professionals at the hospital, we are grateful. Hilal, Alişer and Simaza you the best. We would strongly recommend this team to any foreigner visiting Turkey for treatment.. we were happy! Blessings

We truly appreciate the support and dedication of the entire medical team
We had a very positive experience at the hospital. My father underwent surgery and we are grateful to say it was successful. The doctors and nurses were professional, attentive, and ensured he received excellent care throughout his stay. The hospital facilities were clean and well-organised, and everything went according to plan. The only thing worth mentioning is that the total cost exceeded what we initially planned for, but overall, the quality of care and the successful outcome made it worthwhile. We truly appreciate the support and dedication of the entire medical team.

He really did a great job with helping me understand and setting up everything as much as possible to enable me to have as much of a successful productive visit as I could, which I very much appreciate
I had some logistical problems leading up to my arrival, but i got great help from translator whom helped me throughout my stay, with translations as well as guiding me through the stepps by Wassim. He really did a great job with helping me understand and setting up everything as much as possible to enable me to have as much of a successful productive visit as I could, which I very much appreciate. The coordinator at the location also did a good job of trying to piece together a solution as we tried to find out if I could see some specific doctors whilst i was there which im thankful for.
About Bookimed service
If I have to use my critical eye, I would say, maybe outline the importance of having all the documents of MRI and scans available and underscore the importance of certain time frames when it comes to meeting certain doctors as some can be very busy if one meeting is missed.. And also maybe get all the information from the manager to the local manager about case, because I for example had a problem earlier with getting diagnosed, and would like to give that information to the local manager that earlier, I have had problems with that exact step, so we know to check extra well to see how we can get around finding a solution to my problem with that in mind, knowing it can be hard to find a diagnose, and to be a little extra prepared to navigate this problem.

If in your country it’s hard to find experience with complex medical cases, the best and most reliable choice is Florence Nightingale Hospital
Our heartfelt thanks to Florence Nightingale Hospital My wife and I would like to share our sincere gratitude to the clinic and its amazing staff. First of all, a huge thank you to our coordinator Alisher. He organized everything — hotels, transfers, and all the logistics — at the highest level. Everything was perfectly arranged. We are truly grateful for his care and professionalism. He was always by our side, and even when we were back home in Latvia, he stayed in touch and supported us every step of the way. The attitude and professionalism of the doctors and medical staff were outstanding. As for the treatment — my diagnosis was a brain tumor located in a very delicate and complex area where surgery is extremely challenging. They managed to remove almost everything! The operation was performed by Professor Ilham Elmaci, a brilliant and highly experienced surgeon, together with his exceptional team. They did an amazing job. What impressed us most was how seriously the whole team approached their work — every morning, even on weekends, almost the entire medical team came to check on me. We would also like to thank Dr. Azat Mustafayev, a wonderful doctor who truly understands his patients and is always available and supportive. And, of course, our special thanks to all the nurses and medical staff who cared for me, helped me, and patiently put up with me! 😂 If in your country it’s hard to find experience with complex medical cases, the best and most reliable choice is Florence Nightingale Hospital. Best Regard Alexandrs and Kristina

"Marina Provided us with moral support documentary for the second time at the highest level
Hello, my name is Vladislav Ivanov, Ukraine, Odessa city. In February 2021, my daughter Vlada was diagnosed with anaplastic ependymoma, we went to the doctors for a week trying to find out why the child started having severe headaches. They went through examinations, did an MRI, and as a fact, they found a brain tumor. That's when the ground slipped from under my feet. Realization has come - this has already happened, which means you need to quickly take action. The first thing we did was go to the children's hospital in Kyiv, the child was given a shunt. But unfortunately, fluid began to collect in my head and my vision began to fall sharply. The doctors explained that an operation was urgently needed. We did not have a large accumulated amount, and we decided to complete the operation abroad. We contacted Bookmed. We contacted the employee Marina. Marina quickly found a clinic for us in Turkey, organized a trip for us, flew to Turkey in a matter of days. The hospital was already waiting for us. Examined, took blood for tests and the next day an operation was scheduled. Everything went well. Then they underwent a course of radiotherapy. The results are positive, we were sent home to Ukraine (August 2021). Every 3 months they underwent MRI, the pictures were good .. But a year later, in March 2022, we heard the terrible words “relapse”, “war”. Hastily collected the necessary documents and left for Lviv. From there, by large buses, all children with cancer began to be taken out along the humanitarian corridor from Ukraine to Europe. The daughter and his wife were assigned to France. A second operation was performed, the tumor was removed, and after that a course of chemotherapy was prescribed. After a month of taking the course, the doctor said that chemotherapy was not helping. The doctor suggested experimental chemotherapy, but that didn't help either. As a result, the daughter is getting worse and worse every day. The child began to walk badly, the right leg and handle practically do not work. The child melted before my eyes. It's all very scary, but it's worse to leave Vlad without an opportunity for treatment. I again turned to Marina Bookmed Marina again very quickly found us a hospital in Turkey, helped us with the flight Paris Istanbul. Arrived at the hospital 2 days later, the operation was successful!!! After the operation, the child began to talk, swallow, and after a couple of days to walk. What I want to say Bookmed in particular Marina Provided us with moral support documentary for the second time at the highest level. Marina many thanks to you and your team THANK YOU.

Overall, we are very satisfied with our visit to this clinic, the patient management tactics and we have a follow-up visit planned in 3 months
Good afternoon! We are from Kyrgyzstan! We applied to the clinic through the bookimed website. The coordinator Anastasia was very helpful, everything was organised very clearly, we were never disappointed. The clinic itself is impressive in terms of scale, cleanliness and quality of service, the staff is friendly and attentive. Our interpreter Lamia worked with us, coordinated our logistics around the clinic, tried to ensure timely appointments with doctors, she was very comfortable and easy to communicate with. But, there was a moment with the examination: we were referred to MRI, the procedure was quite long, the room was quite cold, so I was very cold. As a recommendation - it would be good to warn patients about the need to maintain a certain temperature regime in this room and somehow provide comfort as much as possible. Overall, we are very satisfied with our visit to this clinic, the patient management tactics and we have a follow-up visit planned in 3 months.

FAQ about Surgery for syringomyelia in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How do I know I’m a good candidate for syringomyelia surgery in Turkey?

You are a candidate for syringomyelia surgery in Turkey if you have progressive neurological symptoms, such as worsening muscle weakness or loss of pain sensitivity, alongside MRI evidence of a syrinx exceeding 5 mm. Turkish neurosurgeons prioritize surgery when fluid-filled cysts interfere with daily life or indicate underlying Chiari malformations.

  • Neurological progression: Rapidly worsening muscle atrophy, motor difficulties, or loss of temperature sensitivity in extremities.
  • Radiological criteria: MRI findings showing a large syrinx or growth exceeding 5 mm over time.
  • Failed conservation: Chronic pain or scoliosis that remains unmanaged after physical therapy and medication.
  • Underlying causes: Clear identification of Chiari malformation, spinal tumors, or scar tissue blocking cerebrospinal fluid.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While a textbook syrinx appears on an MRI, Turkish specialists like Professor Ilhan Elmaci often decline surgery if there is no functional decline. Data shows that the most successful outcomes occur when treating the root cause, such as Chiari malformation, rather than just shunting the cyst. Clinics like Istanbul Florence Nightingale Hospital use advanced neuronavigation to confirm if the syrinx is actually causing the symptoms before proceeding.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize tracking grip strength and pain scales quantitatively to build a strong case for surgery. Many who sought treatment in Turkey suggest specialized virtual consultations to review recent MRIs, as surgeons may redirect those with stable, small cysts to physiotherapy.

What surgical techniques are used, and how long does the operation take?

Neurosurgeons in Turkey primarily use posterior fossa decompression to treat syringomyelia, often combined with duraplasty to expand the spinal fluid space. These specialized spinal procedures typically last 2 to 4 hours under general anesthesia, depending on whether the surgeon performs additional techniques like myelotomy or laminectomy.

  • Surgical techniques: Specialists perform posterior fossa decompression, duraplasty, and C1 laminectomy for Chiari-related cases.
  • Operation duration: Standard decompression takes 2 hours, extending to 4 hours for complex syrinx shunting.
  • Advanced approaches: Minimally invasive endoscopic-assisted methods are available at specialized centers to reduce tissue trauma.
  • Patient monitoring: Leading clinics use intraoperative neuromonitoring to protect nerve function during the entire procedure.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many assume shunting is the standard, data from top Istanbul centers like Istanbul Florence Nightingale Hospital shows a preference for decompression. Professors like Ilhan Elmaci often achieve 90% syrinx collapse using microsurgery, which addresses the root cause rather than just draining fluid.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the importance of choosing clinics with neuromonitoring capabilities. Most report being able to walk the same day despite the intensive 2 to 4 hour surgical window.

What is the size of the scar after syringomyelia surgery in Turkey?

Syringomyelia surgery in Turkey typically involves a 4–8 cm linear scar along the upper neck or back midline. While initially visible, these scars are easily hidden by longer hair or high-collared clothing. Minimally invasive endoscopic techniques can further reduce scar size to 2–3 cm.

  • Incision length: Standard posterior fossa decompression leaves a 4–8 cm vertical midline scar.
  • Endoscopic advantage: Minimally invasive approaches used in Istanbul clinics reduce scars to 2–3 cm.
  • Scar concealment: Most incisions sit at the hairline or are covered by shirt collars.
  • Recovery timeline: Surgical scars typically take 1–2 years to fade into thin, pale lines.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients can request a paramedian incision from surgeons like Dr. Ilhan Elmaci. This technique curves the scar slightly off-center. This placement prevents the scar from pulling during neck movement. It results in a thinner line that is harder to notice long-term.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find that using silicone sheets and vitamin E oil from week 4 significantly speeds up fading. Most report that dissolving stitches used in Turkish clinics result in very clean, thin scars with minimal risk.

How long should I plan to stay in Turkey?

Patients should plan to stay in Turkey for 14 to 21 days for syringomyelia surgery. This timeframe allows for 2 to 3 nights of hospitalization and 10 to 14 days of local recovery. Extending the stay ensures wound stability and safe air travel after neurosurgery.

  • Hospitalization period: Most neurosurgery centers require 2–3 nights for initial monitoring.
  • Recovery window: Plan 7–10 days in a hotel for essential wound checks.
  • Travel restrictions: Surgeons advise against flying before day 10 to avoid pressure complications.
  • Total duration: Budgeting 21 days accommodates potential physiotherapy or extended post-operative observation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While general tourists stay 10 days, neurosurgery patients at top centers like Istanbul Florence Nightingale Hospital often need a 14-day clearance. Data shows that clinics with JCI accreditation strictly enforce this window. This wait time is vital for patients undergoing laminectomy or shunting to ensure spinal pressure stabilizes before long-haul flights.

Patient Consensus: Many emphasize booking refundable accommodations because recovery speed varies. They often recommend staying at least 14 days to ensure they are stable enough for the return flight home.

Are Turkish doctors qualified for complex neurosurgery like syringomyelia surgery in Turkey?

Turkish neurosurgeons are highly qualified for complex surgeries like syringomyelia. Many hold European and international certifications and train at leading hospitals such as Istanbul Florence Nightingale and NP Istanbul Brain Hospital. Microsurgical and endoscopic techniques available ensure accurate, safe treatment.

  • Training: Professors like Ilhan Elmaci trained at Johns Hopkins and Zurich University.
  • Techniques: Microsurgery, endoscopic skull base, and complex spinal surgeries are routine.
  • Accreditation: Leading clinics hold Joint Commission International (JCI) certification.
  • Specialists: Experts specialise in syringomyelia and related disorders across Istanbul clinics.
  • Advanced tools: Facilities use neuronavigation and neuromonitorisation to boost safety.

Bookimed Expert Insight: The top Turkish neurosurgeons combine international training with decades of experience. For example, Istanbul Florence Nightingale Hospital has multiple surgeons who have published 100+ academic papers and led major neurosurgery departments. Choosing JCI-accredited hospitals ensures access to these skilled teams and advanced technology.

Patient Consensus: Australian patients value neurosurgeons’ experience with syringomyelia and the thorough pre-op review offered. Turkish doctors’ international training stands out, and JCI-accredited hospitals in Istanbul provide trusted care and clear communication.

What is the success rate of syringomyelia surgery in Turkey?

Syringomyelia surgery in Turkey shows a success rate of around 85% or higher for symptom improvement. Leading clinics in Istanbul use microsurgical decompression and advanced spinal surgeries in Joint Commission International (JCI)-accredited facilities. Long-term results reach 88.6% significant improvement with low operative mortality.

  • Success rate: About 85% for symptom relief using microsurgical decompression.
  • Long-term outcome: 88.6% improve clinically after syringopleural shunting procedures.
  • Facilities: Top hospitals like Anadolu Medical Center and Istanbul Florence Nightingale are JCI-accredited.
  • Surgical approaches: Include open decompression and endoscopic spinal surgery.
  • Quick intervention: Early surgery generally leads to better outcomes and fewer secondary interventions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish neurosurgeons like Professor Ilhan Elmaci at Istanbul Florence Nightingale hold European neurosurgery accreditations, enhancing surgical precision and outcomes. JCI-accredited clinics in Istanbul serve thousands annually, boosting patient safety and postoperative care quality. Patients often choose microsurgery techniques for better long-term neurological recovery.

Patient Consensus: Australians value clear communication and specialist expertise in Turkey. Many highlight noticeable pain relief after decompression surgery, though some symptoms linger. Hospital stay comfort and postoperative support in Turkish centres impress visitors.

What types of surgery are performed for syringomyelia in Turkey?

Surgery for syringomyelia in Turkey mainly involves suboccipital decompression to improve cerebrospinal fluid flow. Procedures also include C1 laminectomy, tonsil reduction, arachnoid adhesions release, and rarely, cyst aspiration. Neurosurgeons use microsurgical and endoscopic skull base techniques under general anaesthesia.

  • Suboccipital decompression: removes skull base bone to relieve CSF blockage.
  • C1 laminectomy or C1ectomy: removes first cervical vertebra to widen space.
  • Tonsil reduction: microsurgical plasty reduces cerebellar tonsil pressure.
  • Arachnoid adhesions release: cuts scar tissue blocking CSF flow.
  • Endoscopic skull base surgery: minimally invasive, precise access to cerebrospinal spaces.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkey’s neurosurgeons, like Prof Ilhan Elmaci at Istanbul Florence Nightingale Hospital, combine microsurgical and endoscopic methods. Istanbul hosts top JCI-accredited clinics with specialists skilled in Chiari malformation and CSF disorders. Suboccipital decompression with arachnoid release is the most common successful approach, supported by advanced imaging.

Patient Consensus: Patients note surgery focuses on fixing the cause, not directly removing cysts. Suboccipital bone removal with C1 laminectomy eases symptoms. Turkish surgeons clearly explain steps and recovery. General anaesthesia and hospital stay are standard. Many appreciate thorough follow-up care in Turkey’s leading centres.

What is the recovery process like after syringomyelia surgery in Turkey?

Recovery after syringomyelia surgery in Turkey typically involves a 3-night hospital stay, including 24 hours in ICU lying flat to manage spinal pressure and pain. Patients usually have staples removed around day 8 and gradually transition from strong opioids to milder painkillers over 2-3 weeks with steady symptom improvement.

  • Hospital stay: usually 3 nights with first night in ICU lying flat 24 hours.
  • Pain management: begins with strong opioids then shifts to NSAIDs like ketorolac.
  • Staple removal: typically on day 8 post-surgery.
  • Early recovery symptoms: fatigue, numbness, dizziness improve over 2-3 weeks.
  • Activity advice: lie flat periodically to prevent headaches, avoid rushing normal activities.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Surgeons in Istanbul’s JCI-accredited hospitals like Istanbul Florence Nightingale Hospital and Anadolu Medical Center focus on strict pain control and flat-lying protocols. Most patients switch off narcotics within two weeks, reducing side effects. Early mobilisation is carefully guided to balance healing and avoid complications.
