How Much Does Plasmapheresis Cost in Austria?

Plasmapheresis in Austria typically costs from $2,000 to $3,500. The final price depends on the number of sessions and the specific medical condition treated. In the US, similar procedures cost around $6,000 on average. Patients save around 53% compared to US rates. Treatment usually includes clinical consultations, laboratory tests, disposables, and specialist supervision.

  • Per session rate: $2,000 to $3,500 for a single therapeutic exchange.
  • Advanced filtration: Specialized techniques like INUSpheresis or H.E.L.P. apheresis typically add 20-30% premium.

'In the future, we will apply for Bookimed services and recommend it to friends
Firstly, the doctor listened to us very well, talked to the child and I liked it, examined from different sides and neurology and other directions, asked the child questions about what she liked. I am very pleased. The doctor spoke to us as parents. She advised us to take more gentle drugs, advised us to start monitoring and only then draw conclusions. I'd like to maintain our contacts and communication in the future. I also want to say a special thank you to Svetlana, who helped us make the choice of the clinic from Bookimed, she became for us as a mother during the communication, and also many thanks to the clinic coordinator Alexander. In the future, we will apply for Bookimed services and recommend it to friends.

"Short but encouraging and 'productive' I would say
My hospital stay was short, my appointment with the doctor lasted for 15 minutes. He carefully listened to all I had to say, previous diagnosis I had, stated his recommendation and additionally prescribed me another drug. I have to do a follow up after I finish my medication and return for his opinion regarding my state of health. Short but encouraging and 'productive' I would say. However, I have the feeling we should have discuss more about side effects of the drugs and alternatives if they do not have the desired effect for me.

FAQ about Plasmapheresis in Austria

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is plasmapheresis safe, and what are the main risks?

Plasmapheresis is a safe medical procedure when performed by trained specialists in clinics like Wiener Privatklinik. Severe complications occur in less than 1% of sessions. Austrian centers use ISO-standardized equipment to filter blood components, effectively managing autoimmune and neurological conditions through precise plasma exchange.

  • Systemic safety: Life-threatening complications occur in less than 1% of total procedures.
  • Blood pressure: Hypotension affects 5% to 21% of sessions due to rapid fluid shifts.
  • Calcium levels: Citrate thinners may cause tingling in lips or hands during the session.
  • Access risks: Central venous catheters carry a 2% to 5% risk of infection.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Expert clinics like Wiener Privatklinik leverage professors from the Medical University of Vienna to oversee protocols. Data suggests that choosing centers with Newsweek-ranked excellence ensures higher safety. These top-tier facilities prioritize ultrasound-guided peripheral access. This specific technique significantly reduces the common 20% failure rate seen with standard IV attempts.

Patient Consensus: Expect profound fatigue for several days following the procedure. Aggressive hydration and requesting calcium supplements upfront helps manage the common tingling sensations and recovery exhaustion.

What is plasmapheresis and when is it prescribed?

Plasmapheresis is a medical procedure that removes harmful antibodies, toxins, or abnormal proteins from the blood plasma. Surgeons use a machine to separate liquid plasma from blood cells. The cells are combined with replacement fluids like albumin and returned to the patient's circulation for rapid symptom relief.

  • Autoimmune crises: Treats Guillain-Barre syndrome and myasthenia gravis when steroids or IVIG fail.
  • Neurological disorders: Manages severe multiple sclerosis flares and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP).
  • Organ transplants: Prevents or treats organ rejection by effectively lowering antibody levels in the blood.
  • Treatment schedule: Patients typically undergo 3 to 7 sessions lasting 2 to 4 hours each.

Bookimed Expert Insight: In Austria, facilities like Wiener Privatklinik leverage a multilingual environment with physicians who are often professors at the Medical University of Vienna. While Turkey serves the highest volume of patients globally, Austria offers highly specialized diagnostic density with over 30 specialized departments in top-tier clinics. This proximity to academic research ensures patients receive the most current protocols for complex autoimmune neuropathies.

Patient Consensus: Patients report significant relief by the third week of treatment, especially for muscle weakness. Common experiences include temporary tiredness or tingling sensations immediately following the 120-minute sessions.

How is the procedure performed in Austrian hospitals?

Austrian hospitals perform plasmapheresis using advanced automated apheresis systems to filter blood and replace plasma. Specialists perform the procedure in certified clinics, such as Wiener Privatklinik. The process involves drawing blood via intravenous access, separating plasma through centrifugation, and returning treated blood cells.

  • Access method: Surgeons use peripheral intravenous lines or central venous catheters for blood flow.
  • Cell separation: Automated machines like Fresenius spin or filter blood to isolate diseased plasma.
  • Plasma replacement: Medical teams replace removed plasma with albumin solutions or saline fluids.
  • Monitoring standards: Anesthesiologists monitor blood pressure and calcium levels throughout the 1–3 hour session.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics like Wiener Privatklinik utilize physicians who also serve as professors at the Medical University of Vienna. This academic connection ensures patients receive treatment based on the latest clinical trials. Most Austrian facilities specialize in same-day discharge following these precise protocols.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the need for heavy hydration and calcium-rich foods before sessions to reduce side effects. Many highlight that morning appointments ensure the best staffing levels for monitoring citrate reactions.

What qualifications must the physician and center have?

Qualified Austria centers for plasmapheresis must hold national health authority licensing and ISO International Standards certification. Physicians should be specialists in nephrology or hematology with extensive apheresis experience. Top-tier facilities like Wiener Privatklinik often employ professors from the Medical University of Vienna to ensure academic-level care.

  • Physician expertise: Doctors typically have 15 years experience in interventional radiology or nephrology.
  • Hospital accreditation: Facilities should hold ISO certification and recognition from World's Best Hospitals.
  • Clinical volume: Preferred centers perform 50 to 100 plasmapheresis procedures every year.
  • Critical care: Centers must maintain on-site intensive care units and 24/7 hematology support.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Look for centers where physicians also teach at the Medical University of Vienna. This academic connection ensures they use the latest therapeutic apheresis protocols. At clinics like Wiener Privatklinik, this depth of expertise supports over 30 specialized departments for complex cases.

Patient Consensus: Experienced patients recommend university-affiliated hospitals over smaller donor centers. They emphasize choosing teams with vascular surgery backup to handle complex venous access needs safely.

How long will I need to stay in hospital and when can I travel home?

Plasmapheresis in Austria generally requires a stay of 1 to 3 days per cycle. Stable patients often receive treatment as outpatients with same-day discharge. You should wait 24 to 48 hours after your session before traveling home to ensure cardiovascular stability.

  • Treatment duration: Sessions typically last 2 to 4 hours in clinics like Wiener Privatklinik.
  • Hospital stay: Expect 1 night for initial sessions to monitor for citrate reactions.
  • Travel window: Wait at least 1 day after treatment before flying or long drives.
  • Repeated cycles: Multiple sessions may extend your total stay to 4 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics like Wiener Privatklinik leverage a network of over 400 physicians, including university professors. This high density of specialists means patients often transition to outpatient status faster than average. Scheduling sessions back-to-back can reduce your overall hotel stay in Vienna significantly.

Patient Consensus: Plan for low energy immediately after sessions and keep salty snacks nearby. Most patients recommend arranging a ride post-treatment instead of driving yourself home.

Is the procedure compatible with pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Plasmapheresis during pregnancy or breastfeeding is generally restricted to life-saving emergencies. Most Austrian specialists recommend deferring therapy until after weaning due to limited safety data. The process involves significant fluid shifts and anticoagulants that could impact fetal development or nursing infants.

  • Pregnancy safety: Experts often halt sessions upon pregnancy confirmation to avoid unknown effects.
  • Infant risks: Potential fetal harm may arise from albumin replacements or citrate anticoagulants.
  • Breastfeeding protocol: Nursing mothers typically pump and dump milk for 48 hours post-procedure.
  • Medical necessity: Only life-threatening conditions justify the risk of preterm labor from shifts.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Wiener Privatklinik in Vienna provides access to professors from the Medical University of Vienna. These specialists often coordinate with perinatologists to evaluate emergency therapeutic exchanges. This joint monitoring is vital because therapeutic plasmapheresis removes critical maternal antibodies and medications.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that while emergency sessions later in pregnancy occur, most specialists prioritize safety. Many mothers found milk supply recovery takes weeks after even limited treatment rounds.

What follow-up and lifestyle precautions are necessary after treatment?

After plasmapheresis in Austria, patients must prioritize hydration and rest to stabilize blood volume. Standard precautions include monitoring the puncture site for bruising or redness and avoiding strenuous activity for 24 hours. Austrian medical teams emphasize specific nutrient replacement to support total recovery.

  • Hydration protocol: Drink 2 liters of water to restore plasma volume levels.
  • Activity limits: Avoid heavy lifting or intense exercise for at least 24 hours.
  • Dietary focus: Consume protein-rich foods and iron to aid your body's recovery process.
  • Symptom monitoring: Report any persistent dizziness or tingling in fingers to your physician.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics like Wiener Privatklinik integrate specialized departments to ensure safe blood filtration. High-end Austrian facilities often utilize professors from the Medical University of Vienna to supervise the procedure. Their protocol typically involves a controlled rest period immediately after the session to prevent orthostatic hypotension. This academic oversight ensures that protein levels are balanced before discharge.
