It was performed by the very best doctor, Igor Pona
I had an operation on 16 October 2025. It was performed by the very best doctor, Igor Pona. The procedure was an otoplasty. I really liked the clinic where the operation took place. The clinic’s medical staff were always there for me and kept asking how I was feeling. I am also very grateful to the staff at Bookimed for arranging transport. They took me to the clinic for the operation and brought me home afterwards.I am very pleased with the results of my surgery, three months on. I am very grateful to Dr Egor Pona, and indeed to the entire staff at the Bookimed clinic.
I had an otoplasty in October 2025. It’s been three months and a week, and the results are fantastic. I am delighted with the result. I would like to thank Bookimed Clinic. I specifically asked the clinic staff for a Russian-speaking doctor; the clinic replied the very next day and informed me that they had a Russian-speaking doctor available. I was given an appointment with the doctor about a week later. The staff at Bookimed Clinic were in constant contact with me. They were incredibly supportive. They kept asking how I was getting on and how I was feeling. They told me not to worry and that everything would be fine.

FAQ about Thigh lift in Austria

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Are thigh lift costs covered by health insurance in Austria?

Health insurance in Austria generally does not cover thigh lift surgery, as it is classified as a cosmetic procedure. Partial or full reimbursement from providers like Osterreichische Gesundheitskasse (OGK) requires documented medical necessity, such as chronic skin infections or severe mobility impairment following bariatric weight loss.

  • Medical necessity: Requires proof of persistent skin inflammation or functional movement restrictions.
  • Insurance approval: Must secure written pre-approval from the insurance medical review board.
  • Private clinics: Coverage may not apply if surgery occurs in private facilities.
  • Self-pay costs: Expect out-of-pocket costs between $7,000 and $11,000 if denied.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While public insurance is restrictive, choosing a specialized private facility like Wiener Privatklinik ensures access to Newsweek-ranked surgical standards. Data shows patients often pay out-of-pocket here for faster access to top-tier surgeons, as insurance approval for body contouring remains exceptionally rare and paperwork-heavy.

Patient Consensus: Most patients expect out-of-pocket payment as the default reality. Many advise securing a formal surgeon's report on functional issues early, as insurance approval is never automatic, even after significant weight loss.

What types of thigh lifts are offered by Austrian plastic surgeons?

Austrian plastic surgeons offer six primary thigh lift techniques, including medial, vertical, spiral, and mini-thigh lifts. These procedures utilize specialized anchoring methods at ISO 9001 certified facilities like Wiener Privatklinik. Surgeons often combine surgical excision with liposuction or energy-assisted technologies to optimize contouring and protect lymphatic vessels.

  • Mini thigh lift: Discreet groin-crease incisions address mild laxity in the upper inner thigh area.
  • Vertical thigh lift: Extensive shaping for massive weight loss patients involving a long inner-leg incision.
  • Medial thigh lift: Classic technique targeting significant skin laxity along the inner seam of the leg.
  • Spiral thigh lift: Advanced 360-degree contouring for patients requiring comprehensive upper, outer, and inner tightening.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics in Vienna and Graz differentiate themselves by integrating radiofrequency or VASER technology directly into the surgical plan. This approach is not just for fat removal. It helps preserve the lymphatic system during skin excision. This combination helps reduce post-operative swelling compared to traditional standalone excision methods.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that scar visibility is a necessary trade-off for achieving a firmer contour. Most report that maintaining a stable target weight before surgery ensures the most lasting results.

What is the recovery timeline after a thigh lift?

Thigh lift recovery takes 6 to 8 weeks for a full return to activities. Patients typically resume sedentary work within 14 to 21 days. Initial healing requires intensive rest, with gentle walking starting by day 2 to ensure proper circulation and prevent blood clots.

  • Immediate healing: The first 2 weeks involve peak swelling and potential drainage tube management.
  • Mobility restrictions: Avoid deep squats, heavy lifting, or strenuous lower-body stretching for 8 weeks.
  • Compression therapy: Wear specialized medical garments 23 hours daily for the first month.
  • Exercise resumption: Low-impact cardio is usually safe by week 6 with surgeon clearance.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many focus on surgery, the choice of facility in Austria impacts early mobilization. Clinics like Wiener Privatklinik provide specialized care that supports the critical first 48 hours. Data shows that patients who strictly follow the 6-week compression protocol see faster resolution of residual swelling.

Patient Consensus: Expect the first week to be physically demanding, requiring dedicated help at home with meals and movement. Most people find that waiting a full 8 weeks before hitting the gym prevents common issues like wound separation.

Do I need to wear compression garments after a thigh lift?

Yes, wearing medical-grade compression garments is essential for 4 to 6 weeks after a thigh lift. These specialized supports minimize postoperative edema and prevent fluid accumulations like seromas. They also provide vital stability to healing incisions and help tissues adapt to new leg contours.

  • Swelling control: Constant pressure reduces fluid buildup and prevents the formation of painful seromas.
  • Incision protection: Garments reduce physical tension on surgical scars to promote flatter, smoother healing.
  • Tissue contouring: Compression helps skin redrape evenly over the newly sculpted underlying thigh muscles.
  • Initial wear: Surgeons typically require 24-hour wear for the first 2 to 3 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many focus on cost, the academic level of care in Austria is a major differentiator. Clinics like Leech Private Clinic utilize university professors as consultants. This high-level expertise often results in more precise, customized compression protocols that can accelerate your return to activity.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend using soft padding or gauze under garment seams to prevent skin irritation. Many find that gradually increasing time without the garment helps them gauge when swelling has stabilized.
